I'm writing this review to save people from ordering the shrimp scampi here. My niece chose this restaurant to celebrate her birthday, and it was also my sister's birthday. There were four of us. Everyone except me is very fond of red meat--I am not. When I looked at the menu online, I was happy to see they offered several non-meat options. I decided on the shrimp scampi and looked forward to it all week. What a disappointment. The six shrimp arrived at room temperature, and the butter sauce they were sitting in was also barely warm. The shrimp did not appear to have been cooked in the sauce at all. They looked and tasted like plain boiled shrimp--exactly like the pre-cooked shrimp you can buy at Costco. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that's where they came from. The sauce tasted like pure melted butter, with no noticeable garlic or white wine flavor--just plain butter. I suppose this is what I get for ordering a non-meat entrée at a steakhouse, but if you can't make a decent option for non-meat eaters, don't bother putting it on the menu. The French onion soup, however, was delicious. I would order only that again if I had to return. The creamed spinach was just okay--honestly, the one I make at home is much better. The baked potato was also very good and served piping hot, which I especially appreciated after the tepid shrimp. I did not order dessert, but my niece and sister both had cheesecake. They did not charge for it since it was their birthdays, which was very much appreciated. They also do not serve bread at this restaurant--or at least none was offered or brought to the table. Another thing I found strange was the layout. There is a very narrow hallway leading to the dining rooms on the right, and right in the middle of that hallway is the computer station where the waitstaff enter orders. I would hate to be a server here--it seems like one of the worst possible places for it. People were constantly trying to squeeze past while the staff were standing there trying to work. read more

Moresi's Chophouse (Steakhouse & Bar) in Clayton is, bar none, one of the best steakhouses in the Bay Area. My wife and I headed out for a nice dinner tonight and made our way back to a place we've enjoyed before and it did not disappoint. Ed Moresi, the owner, is a fantastic host who makes you feel right at home and part of the family from the moment you walk in. We started the evening with drinks and a glass of wine, then shared the pear salad, which was fresh and flavorful. For our main course, we split the house-cut prime rib absolutely outstanding and cooked to perfection. Between the warm hospitality, great atmosphere, attentive service, and excellent food, it made for a memorable night out. If you're anywhere near Clayton, do yourself a favor and stop by Moresi's. Awesome Saturday night dinner outside under the canopy which was well lit and surprisingly warm with the heater on the table and the stand up heater between the tables. We were warmly greeted and seated quickly, and received wonderful, attentive service during our entire meal. The dinner menu at Moresi's offers a lot of different options, including prime rib on Friday and Saturday nights. Started with shrimp cocktail (poached or grilled) and went with the poached shrimp which were a good size, pretty tender, and accompanied by a tasty cocktail sauce. We then went with the House Cut prime rib which was perfectly medium rare, well-sized portion that was well-seasoned and included au jus and two types of horseradish, along with two sides of your choice (we selected creamed spinach, glazed carrots). We also tried the braised short rib which was also a large portion of fork tender short rib on top of a bed of creamy Parmesan polenta. Finished with their NY-style cheesecake which had a good texture and flavor and was a great end to the meal, especially with freshly brewed hazelnut decaf coffee. Definitely wins on all the dishes and service, and we are definitely coming back! read more

One my favorite restaurants in the East Bay Area. Service is impeccable. Atmosphere is lovely in downtown Clayton's. So charming. The food fantastic. Definitely try prime rib night and taco Tuesdays. Drinks excellent. I just wish I had found this place long before.... Since we moved out of the area recently. Will definitely come back when in town. read more

I tried to make a large party reservation at Morsei's, and at first, everything was great. Joey helped me -- super nice, professional, and easy to work with. He really made a good impression. Then I got a call back saying they couldn't accommodate our group after all. When I called to see if we could adjust the size or time, I was put on hold, and Dominic picked up. He was rude, dismissive, and completely unhelpful. When I finally said I'd just cancel the reservation, he actually chuckled. That pretty much said it all. I guess they're doing so well they don't need big groups dining with them! Morsei's used to be such a gem -- one of our favorite spots -- but after this experience, it's hard to feel the same way. Joey was awesome, but Dominic's attitude will drive people away fast. Be warned. read more

Awesome steakhouse in Clayton! Prices are fair for the cuts and quality of meat and includes sides. Lots of outdoor seating and overall feels like a throwback experience. Hidden gem, only place like this in the area. Service is 10/10 and it's more of casual feel, not upscale. read more

I went there for a gathering. I just ordered a simple burger, medium. This was back in Jan. One or two bites in towards the middle I realized that the burger was pretty raw. I asked them for a properly cooked burger. So this is what these people did. Instead of just properly cooking a burger, they took my partially eating burger and gave it right back to me with the patty more well cooked. So they basically took the raw patty with a bite or two and threw it back on the grill and then gave it right back to me. Really animal type stuff. You didn't have to use another patty so you get one star!! read more

Went here on date night. I'm sure it's great for Clayton but honestly, the food is disappointing. We were served undercooked baked potatoes. Not sure how you don't get that right as a chophouse. Our server was wonderful. I am not one to send food back so I don't complain in a restaurant. Was interesting though to see another server doing shots with a table close by. read more

My husband has had good experiences, but lately they are not paying attention. The server had only one response to everything which was "sounds good." The place feels smaller than ever. If one person is sick (ie the coughing table next to us) we will all feel ill in the next few days. The smell is a bit "old house." It didn't used to be this way. We discovered Moresi's Chop House years ago, when I was researching a nice steakhouse to celebrate the birthday of a relative who loves steak. Then, I was really impressed with how the service was friendly and efficient, with the proprietor coming by to solicit feedback about the dining experience. The appetizers, steaks (particularly the filet mignon and the prime rib), and desserts were all very good. We went back recently post-Covid, and the experience did not disappoint. When other restaurants have declined in terms of food and service, Moresi's still retains its high level of execution in the food preparation and service. As before, it was quiet enough to have a conversation. Again, Ed Moresi came by to see how our experience went--a rare, personal touch nowadays! If we lived closer to Clayton, we would visit Moresi's more frequently. So if you're out in East Contra Costa County or Concord, do stop by and check out Moresi's. I would suggest making reservations, especially for Sunday dinners, which are very popular with the locals as they offer a special Sunday menu. read more

Jamie was our server. She was a lot of fun and very attentive. We were celebrating an anniversary and a birthday. She suggested we have half salads with our dinner and I am glad we did. The pear and Gorgonzola salad was awesome, but any bigger and I would not have eaten all my dinner. We had different dinners. I had the petite prime rib, he had salmon, she had short ribs. I've been to Moresi's a number of times and if anything, they have consistently shown how inconsistent they are. In a nutshell, it's a hometown chow place that tries to be "upscale" but clearly has no idea which end of it to hold. Despite being called a "chophouse", steaks are their weakest hand and I strongly recommend ordering something else - the only exception is the prime rib (that one can be OK but it's only served on Fridays and Saturdays). To give you an idea how bad their regular steak can get: I recently ordered a ribeye, since it's a fairly foolproof cut, and what I was served looked like something you'd get at the Cracker Barrel - little over 1/2" thin affair that was made out of two disjointed pieces, each piece falling apart and each piece cooked differently. Even a Costco steak looks and tastes better. As far as the service - it can be either very good or nonexistent, depending on your luck and the way the stars aligned that day. I've had both. When the manager is in the house, things tend to run smoother. Their "Sunday supper" price fix menu is probably the best offering that includes soup or salad, the main and a drink. On the balance - if you have a special occasion, do yourself a favor and book elsewhere. If you just want to sit outside on a nice day and eat a meal prepared by someone else, then Moresi's fits the bill. read more

Second time I've been here. Our waiter was super nice from last night. Sorry, bro, I don't remember your name! He was really kind, and had a great personality. Also had some really great recommendations. He also carried around an orange leather notebook, and we signed his notebook. It looked like other guests had wrote in it, thanking him for being a good server. Ambiance was nice, because of these rustic lights they hung up. I had the drink that had champagne & lemonade in it, a perfect summer drink. French onion soup was also good, but crème brûlée was perfect. The sugar up top didn't taste too burnt. It seemed like they opened up some kind of "Make Shift" little outdoor bar/food truck thing outside. They were playing 2000's hip-hop right before closing. Not sure if they were trying to do the club scene after closing. Super confused what was happening at that moment. read more

Moresi's Chophouse has been a staple in Downtown Clayton for a while, and it's definitely one of the few spots in the area for a cocktail and a steak. It used to be my go-to place for a nice evening out, but after a recent visit, I'm not so sure I'll be back anytime soon. The food is decent, but it's just not as impressive as it once was. I was craving something comforting, so I ordered the pasta bolognese. Honestly, it wasn't even close to a true bolognese. The sauce was odd--I'm not sure what it was, but it definitely didn't meet my expectations. I also asked the server about raw oysters, since they have Rockefeller on the menu, and she was brave to bring me the raw oysters... which were shriveled and clearly aged. Not a good look for a place that prides itself on being upscale. That said, the service is great, and the ambience is always pleasant. The atmosphere is definitely one of the reasons I keep coming back--it's cozy, and the staff are always friendly. But with a new restaurant, Enye, just around the corner, Moresi's really needs to step it up in both food quality and consistency if they want to remain competitive. read more

We celebrated my amazing dad's birthday last night at Moresi's, such a quaint spot. My first time there, we came from San Ramon. The entire staff was sooo friendly and efficient. The food was delicious, we all ordered different dishes, nice variety, something for everyone. Kids got sick and our NYE plans went down the drain, just moved to Clayton and wanted to at least have a fancy NYE dinn at home. I've never had to go steak but this place did not disappoint at all. Before even picking up the food, service at the bar was great and even got a Christmas/Birthday shot. We ordered (2) medium (1) medium rare stake and they did not disappoint (yes, even being in to go box). Lobster was great and even better than most big name places. My husband wanted to take me to this chophouse because he ordered a sandwich from here last week and said that it was good. However, he told me that we are going to have to order it TO GO because they are not welcoming to Black people. I told him that it was ridiculous. We live 5 minutes away from this establishment, so we should be able to sit down and eat. I told him that our money is green and it shouldn't be a problem. We walked in. The hostess looks at us and says, "How can we help you". That was a flag for me. She didn't greet us like the other customers. Most hostesses with appropriate customer service greet you and ask if you have a reservation, or ask how many are in your party so they can find a table and let you know how long the wait is. I told her that we were there to eat. She barely acknowledged me and didn't confirm with us know if she was going to find us a table or not. Zero communication. She just continued to look down at her screen. I started to get annoyed. A couple of minutes later, the owner whispered in her ear and told us that he was going to look for a table for us. I walked around the restaurant and saw that there were plenty of tables. However, I figured maybe they had a lot of reservations tonight. This is what pissed me off. As we are waiting for them to look for a table feeling very awkward, two young white men come in. The hostess had a nice smile, looked at them, and said "Welcome in, do you have a reservation"? They said "No". She said, "Ok, do you mind sitting outside"? I will go check to make sure there is a table available." I was pissed. I walked out and told my husband that I was not eating here. I have owned my small commercial business for 10 years in Walnut Creek and have 8 employees. We all know how valuable it is to provide top-tier quality customer service. Living in the Bay Area we have all races coming through our doors and welcome them and treat them equally. Because we respect humanity and believe in kindness. I hate writing bad reviews because I know how powerful Yelp can be for small business marketing. Having a positive reputation is so important, especially in your community. Clayton has had a bad reputation for being racist. I didn't want to believe it but now I do. They will not continue to be successful with this type of customer service. I just can't believe the restaurant isn't packed to the gills! We had a wonderful meal ordered even before learning that the added special Sunday dinner was inclusive of a great beverage and extras We have been before, on several occasions as our kids/grandkids live nearby, when the food choices and wine were numerous Tonight we enjoyed soup or salad with our meal complete with wine! The food was great, everything was delicious. The service was good; the restaurant itself is beautiful, and of course the whole town of Clayton is gorgeously picturesque. One thing that unpleasantly surprised me was that we came to celebrate my birthday, and no one offered a piece of cake with a candle like they usually do in restaurants. I mean, they asked if we wanted to order a dessert, and I said we were full assuming they will bring this birthday cake anyways and we don't want anything extra, and they were like, okay happy birthday drive safe. I know it's a little thing but I'm a single mom of an almost one year old and I don't go out that often, I wanted to have a little celebration, and it's the only place I've been to in the US that won't do that. We went to La Veranda for my bday last year and they did make this effort to mark the special occasion, so I guess it's not part of local traditions or something. read more
