Ok! 1st time here a week before St. Patrick's Day. We decided to try it because they were listed on Restaurant Week. I LOVE Irish food and after moving here recently, and with Bushwaller's as the only local option, I was surprised to see this establishment as it NEVER came up on a search. I had the three course meal. Chose the Welsh Rarebit with toast points as the appetizer. It was definitely not that. It was a watered down grainy mustard cheese sauce, not good. My main was the Sizzle plate, pan seared steak with herb butter, veggies and mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, there was NO seasoning on the steak. Herb butter? I don't think it was there! Last option was dessert, a choice of bread pudding or cheesecake. ALWAYS bread pudding. Sadly, only to get it to-go, at home I discovered they did not separate the ice cream and it was a gooey wet mess I didn't even try, so sad... We would go back because we loved the ambiance however, it will only be for drinks which were good, and maybe another try at an appetizer. But it will be something off their tried and true main menu. Maybe. All in all, 4* is generous but it was cute and our newer waitress was sweet. read more

My wife and I went in for a beer. When we sat down, we waited to be approached by wait staff. This did not happen. We were ignored for about 15 minutes as other wait staff walked by us and did not say a word. I finally asked one of the staff if someone was going to wait on us only to be told that we must have been missed. As we seated smack dab in the middle of the small pub, I found that excuse to be a bad excuse at that. We then put our coats on and left. I do not recommend this establishment. read more

Once was enough... never going back. We visited this place with our adult children, so we had a myriad of palates in the mix. The restaurant is very cramped and the furniture looked to be pre-WWII. It is littered with all kinds of bar-related regalia, some of it Irish Pub-ish, some of it not. Everyone got something different so we had a variety of items from the menu. The food was edible, for the most part, but none of us felt compelled to go back again. The highlight of our visit there was our waitress. While the food she served us ranged from mediocre to "...not getting that again...", she was sweet and very attentive to our group. We made sure she got a good tip because of her great service... it wasn't her fault that the menu needed a new one. Lastly, given it was right around St Patrick's Day, we thought we'd take a crack at sitting at the "Irish Bar" for a pint before heading out. The bartender (who we believe was the owner) was impatient and rude, angrily saying at one point (paraphrasing), "I'm busy, what do you want?". Yes, I can see where they might think the waiter and owner were rude, they're just a little standoffish. Visiting from SC. Went on a rainy Sunday night after a long drive, it was a perfect Irish Pub experience, the Guinness was creamy and the Irish Stew was fantastic. Hubby and I visited Magoo's for first time. Irish pub food was on menu. I am always excited for pub food. We arrived greeted warmly by server, ordered a beer and it went downhill from there. Fish and chips are always a fav at most pubs, unfortunately I was served what seemed to warmed up breaded fish I would buy at the grocery store along with oven cooked McCain fries. Was extremely disappointed. I have a beer batter recipe at home and should have made my own with fresh cut fries. And they state the staff takes a yearly trip to Ireland for inspiration? I'd be happy to save you the long trip and join me in my home kitchen and I am just a mediocre home cook. Sorry for harsh review guess I was really craving some awesome fish and chips read more

Can a place be more awkward panda? We walk in and everyone is confused. We are called customers and we want a drink... we had to explain... so a waitress runs outside and looks at us. We are confused. So we walk outside... assuming she might be our waitress. She's not. so we sit outsid. Our new waiter is better but tells us they have run out of one canned beer. So we pick another one. But then he comes back to tell us they "found one in the back." They didn't let us know it was "diet." My hot chocolate arrives and tastes watered down. Great location. The outdoor seating section is very cute. The service was solid as well. But otherwise, the food was nothing to write home about. I would give the food a 2.5/5. Ordered the fish and chips. Chips were eh, you can get better fries down the road at Old Towne. Full Irish breakfast was tasty but not particularly filling. Maybe it would taste better if we had been drinking. Glad we stopped by, but probably won't be back with so many other good spots in town. read more

Wandering around Frederick on a Saturday afternoon, bar hopping. Tried Magoos for the first time. Empty. 2 locals there when we arrived. Otherwise empty. Bartender was nice at first and then when she found out where we lived, she immediately got an attitude. We talked about Ireland and I convey known family history. She preceded to her phone then challenged me about my history. Who does this? I know what little I know. Ordered a couple apps. Mussels, salty. Fries, just ok. After leaving here we went to Bushwallers and had a much better experience. Will not return to Magoos. read more

This is my first time visiting this establishment for carry out. It will likely be my last time. I am NOT a fan of Old Bay seasoning with the exception of crabs and crab cakes if used sparingly. When I returned to work and opened the paper bag, it smelled like I had a dozen steamed crabs in the bag. The odor of the Old Bay permeated all of the food and in my opinion, ruined it! I called the order in and was not informed that the pub owned stock in McCormick (I need a sarcasm font). There was no mention in the online menu. Sandwich was ok but that is all I can say about it. We went for lunch last Sunday, I was pretty excited about it since there are some decent reviews and my wife and I both love food with an Irish flair. Before I start let me just clue you folks in who haven't been there yet, there is an abundance of flair in the menu, but we didn't experience much Irish. We started with "Irish Dipped Bread" that comes with "Bloody Mary" dipping sauce...okay, it is literally chunks of bread dough that were deep fried and a ramekin of spaghetti sauce. It was mildly..tasty, but Irish?? We also had the Brie Avocado Corn Melt...so, this turned out to be sinus-clearing Brie melted so that only the rind was visible, some slivers of avocado, corn kernels, a few bits of sun-dried tomatoes, and a handful of white flat bread cut into triangles. Couldn't even finish half. Just don't. I had ordered the Savory Vegetable Pie (see photo) and my wife ordered the Skinny Leprechaun Pizza. Mine was the usual expected veggies you'd find in a freezer bag of mixed vegetables, mixed in a (spaghetti?) sauce, topped with a bit of puff pastry, and baked. It was...edible. My wife's pizza (Irish pizza?) Was flat bread with the toppings scattered over and a dusting of cheese. Again, edible. All in all everything gave the impression that the ingredient components were sourced from cans, very cheap. I guess this is pub fare? It isn't a place we are planning a return visit. We should have known when we walked in and saw that Jennifer (former Frederick mayor) is the proprietor. Not really friendly. She used to have an Irish-themed restaurant over on W Patrick (called Jennifer's) that didn't last very long. We had tried that as well and left with the same conclusions then. To be completely fair I rated it with 2 stars, because we are vegetarian so we didn't have menu items that could very well be more Irish in their presentation and have better flavor? You decide. It was kind of nice soaking up the Irish-feeling decor. And, I am betting that if we were drinkers and downing bottles of Guinness we would probably have been inclined to a more liberal view of the fare. read more

Where to begin? Beer is warm. Crab dip tastes like chlorine. Chicken sandwich with crab meat HAD NO CRAB MEAT. Pizza is cafeteria quality. Server didn't introduce herself. Server rarely came by. Took too long to order. One of our guests said that this is Denny's quality food at best, but I don't think I've ever had food at Denny's that was this bad. There was a second server or manager who came by occasionally, and she was slightly more friendly, but not enough to round this review up to the next star. Each of the last few times hubby and I visited, we were impressed with Magoo's pub food. Last night a spur-of-the-moment decision to eat out found us there enjoying their fish and chips and a bacon cheeseburger. The fish were battered just enough to provide a nice crunch over moist flaky white fish. Crinkle cut fries dusted with Old Bay were as good as ever. Hubby reported bacon cheeseburger was tasty and grilled as ordered. Pleasant service and a Second Street view round out a great spot to watch people without the Market Street traffic. read more

Went there for date night with my Girlfriend, and wished we had tried someplace else. Just not that good overall.........service was slow and food was passable at best. I asked the server about the wings and she said they were great (along with everything else). Unfortunately that was not the case...wings were not fresh wings, they were little mini wings that you find in the freezer section. Crab fries with very little crab, Etc. I have been here twice in the past two weeks, mostly because it's the only place with any open seating in downtown Frederick. Both times I have been unsatisfied. First experience, my server was rude about the mask policy. I asked what the rules were and instead of politely explaining their policy I was greeted with a rude remark about how I should have known that masks were required at all time. The sandwich I ordered was mediocre and fries seemed like they were straight out of a freezer bag. Second experience was just straight up terrible. Our server was very rude. She made us feel unwelcomed. Almost like it was a bother to take our order. I'm a waitress myself, so I'm pretty familiar with serving "protocol." Anyways if the food was any good, I could possibly throw this place another star, but sadly it's not. Maybe consider hiring a server who actually gives a shit about the customers. read more

This place is easy to overlook, which peaked my curiosity a little. We went for dinner on a Wednesday night. The outdoor seating was nice, and the service was pretty average. But honestly the prices were a little high for very mediocre food. I got two $5+ smithwick pints, and the "pot luck" special so I could try a few different things. The best part about it was the puff pastry style biscuits plopped on top of two of the dishes. The mashed peas were saltier than me, and the pot pie was oddly tangy... My counterpart ordered a special burger with crab dip on it - and I literally couldn't taste the crab when I tried it, they put about as much dip on it as you would put mayo. I will say the killer fries were bomb! So maybe if you wanna try this place out just come on a low key night for fries and a beer! read more

We came here because it was the only place not busy (red flag). The lady who greeted us was rude. We just ordered drinks because as we were sitting there we saw the reviews on how bad the food is. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. We gave her a good tip since we had a feeling we would be her only customers that night and she has to work with that rude greeter person at the door. read more

I stopped by on this beautiful Saturday's morning to sit outside and have a drink with my dog. The pub was empty...the outside was empty...not a single soul. I tied my Therapy Certified GSD to the front rail with the intentions of just sticking my head into the doorway and asking if I could grab a seat outside and have lunch. But, before I could get 1 word out a women whom I assume is the owner practically bit my head of and informed me that "you can't tie your dog to my front tail". I informed her that I just wanted to sit outside and have lunch and she said " No, dogs can't sit in the outside seating". Wow??? This is the first restaurant that I have been to in Frederick where dogs are not allowed in outside seating. And as much as I think that this is short-sighted on their part...let's attempt to show an ounce of proper customer service skills when you deny me service. read more

The choice of wines at a bar of all places was very bland. Go into any restaurant that serves wine and you'll hear the same 4- Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, White Zinfandel and Merlot. Sometimes a Moscato too. That's what Magoos' had available. Aren't they supposed to be a bar? And those were the only wines they had.They did have a Sangria that night but after 2 servings I didn't even feel mellow...must have been a lot of water. The food was meh...nothing to stop for. If you're here for Irish pub fare, leave. If you want beers, burgers, and sandwiches, you'll be okay. I once tried the Bangers and Mash and received mash potatoes that were flavorless and sort of starchy, as if they were instant potatoes and unseasoned, alongside three tiny breakfast sausages that tasted like they came from the frozen section of a grocery store. Gulf Shrimp Pasta or something from the Entrees: The shrimp were overcooked and had that frozen taste. It came with pasta in some sort of canola oil sauce. It was overall bland, disgusting, and lacking freshness. Spicy Chicken Breast thing with mash potatoes: Meat texture was very strange and had me questioning if it was real meat. The breading was flavorless and far from crispy. The mashed potatoes were just like the ones that came with the Bangers and Mash: Crap. My friend has the chicken pot pie, and it literally looked and taste like it was taken out of a frozen chicken pot pie box. My wife and I went to Magoo's last Saturday for dinner because we got a restaurant.com gift certificate there and it was great! The food was served in good portions and was very well priced. I had the bangers and mash and my wife had the chicken pot pie which were both great. The wait staff did a great job of making sure we were taken care of without being over-bearing. They had a great beer selection and the standard Irish beers on tap. It was a great experience and we'll definitely be going back. read more

We were in town for colorfest. Chose to eat here at one of the outdoor tables. Please forgive me I can't remember our waitresses name we called her "miss Jameson" cuz she had a Jameson Irish whiskey shirt on. She is an incredible waitress very attentive and helpful despite Mother Nature deciding to dump rain on us!!!!!! Great delicious fresh food and the coffee was pretty good as well. Our waitress was even kind enough to provide us with plastic bags so we could walk to our car without drowning (as we didn't have an umbrella and not expecting rain). Well worth our time and drive and will definitely stop in again when we return for another road trip!!!! read more

First time coming here on a Saturday night and made open table reservations...id say don't only because this is a local place and it's not very packed and it was honesty embarrassing to have a reservation to a place like that. Anyhow, this is an Irish pub so we got the fish and chips which were pretty good and shepherds pie. The latter was on their "speciality" menu and irritating that this is an Irish bar, you'd think dishes like this would be really good and that wasn't the case, the stew was beyond bland and the mash potatoes tasted boxed. You can also see the kitchen from the seating area and I saw one of the cooks pick something off the cooking station and eat it...very unappetizing and not something one should see. Overall not super impressed but I can see it being enjoyable to sit outside and have a drink but food wise stick to fish and chips and a burger (assuming you can't mess it up) as the more traditional Irish food wasn't great. read more
