So I've been in here a few times recently as I occasionally work in the area. In my previous visits the bartender a female was very friendly and easy to talk to. It was very slow as they had just opened but this happened probably about 3 times over the summer and the bartender recognized me the second time I came in. Typically I ordered lunch ate and went back to work. Well today I'm working in the area again unfortunately I had an upset stomach, so I walked In didn't see the bartender anywhere but there were a couple of tables full already eating so I figured they were cooking. Anyway I booked it straight to the bathroom and was in there for about 10 minutes as I had set my timer to get back to work and some a*#hole throws the door wide open and yells " hey man you've been in here a long time! I think you need to finish up and get out of here!" Embarrassed because he was loud enough the whole bar I'm sure heard him. I did as he asked and will never be going back. So rude what the hell is wrong with people. The only reason there's 2 stars is because of the previous bartender she was very nice but this Chris Farley look alike was certainly no Chris Farley more like a pre Madonna. read more

I am not into bars, but I came with a couple of friends because I was in town from California. Right off of the bat, I noticed the type of crowd that this place had contained and I was impressed. No rowdiness or negative vibes. People were getting along and seemed to be drinking in moderation. I'm used to seeing rowdy crowds and negative people in bars (southern California), which why I hated going to bars. The alcoholic drinks were good and our bar tender was great. Stopped in here for a quick beer and burger before heading back home. Not familiar with Salem area and I was hungry so I didn't bother looking very hard for a place to go. Just drove around till I found this "sports bar". Before walking in there are huge signs of the door that say they wont serve you if you are visibly intoxicated, no marijuana on site, and other useless information. What should be posted on the door is "we do not serve bar food". We ordered 2 burgers and 2 beers. The vague menu was my first clue, then they don't serve fries only chips, so clue #2 no fryer. I look around and realize there is no kitchen, but a stack of microwaves behind the bar. I honestly considered paying for the beer and leaving, but we had already ordered and I was hungry to the point of dizziness. Bottom line they got me hook line and sinker. $23 for two microwaved burgers and warm beers. read more

I love Magoo's. I've been meeting the girls there for more than a year now for the occasional after-work drink. The outdoors seating is for smokers and non-smokers alike. As a lifelong non-smoker, I celebrated the no smoking ban in the bars. I do feel for my smoking friends and I enjoy hanging out in the indoor/outdoor seating Magoo's has created for our kind if group. This is clearly not a foodie's paradise and I think a lot of the reviews put too much weight on the food. ***This. Is. A. Dive. Bar. (Albeit a clean, well-kept dive bar.)*** Enough variety of beer on tap to placate most. Stiff drinks in the right price range and the food is edible. Play some pool, shuffleboard or zone out on the current sporting event broadcasted on TV. You can be easily left alone to your own thoughts or the mutual gossip between comrades. Waitstaff has been hit and miss in the past but I think they'e got a good crew in there now. I give the place five starts because they have the dive bar nailed down. Can't help but love this place. Oh and they have a pretty kick-ass Halloween Party to boot. read more

This was the first bar that I actually went to in Salem & from the mixed reviews I was not sure what I was in for..... however! I love Dive bars, I thrive off of these kind of places and Magoo's was Fabulous! It is actually a lot cleaner then most "Dive Bars" that I'm used to going to. This place has very nice people working there and the outdoor patio was really nice with the heaters in it, it was actually a little to hot out in the patio so we had to turn those puppies off. Compared to the "Ugly Meat Market" that we went to on our 2nd stop in Salem...this place was a GEM! read more

Okay... I get it... it's a sports bar. Cold beer, check. Multiple televisions set to a variety of sports channels, check. But would it kill them to toss out some decent grub? That THING they attempt to pass off as a burger is horrible. I'm guessing the bun was house made, which is the only redeeming feature of an otherwise flavorless sandwich. It featured an old and tired frozen meat patty cooked to un-perfection, topped with cold american cheese, iceberg lettuce and a slice of a hydroponic tomato. It's a dive. The exterior and the layout will give you appropriate expectations. The bartender didn't know much about their beer selection, which was pretty limited by Oregon standards. Ordered the chicken sandwich with a pint of Dead Guy Ale. It was a meager portion with a bag of Lays potato chips. Bread was cheap and stale. Chicken was obviously thawed, not grilled. If there was sauce or seasonings, I surely didn't taste them. Walked out for just over $15. If you need a brew while staying at the nearby hotel or during a break from the local convention center, you *could* do worse, but you could do a lot better. read more

You will surely find: a smoky bar, tvs playing sports games, cheap beer, darts, pool, and some sort of game called 'shuffle board' (like air hockey but on a long table and instead of floating on air, the pucks 'float' on tiny clear silicon beads). In fact my friend and I got kicked out for "doing drugs" when we'd just spent 10 minutes talking and doing mascara in the bathroom. This was after we had only one drink! We were here on a Wednesday night. Blazer game was on and the bar was relatively quiet, just a few tables. Great old-time bar feel. Plenty of TV's, a pool table and a shuffle board. Little lady who was bartending was super sweet even though some drunk idiot kept hitting on her. She made us nachos that were the bomb! Had lunch there today. I have had the garlic cheese bread before and it was good so we had it again. It was still good. Then we ordered a pastrami sandwich and a cheese burger. They both came with chips (fries aren't served here). The hamburger was microwaved...like the ones you can get at 7-11 in the plastic bags...gross. If ordering food stick to something that doesnt necessarily need cooking because everything is basically microwaved. Microwaved meat=disgusting. I was taking a friend out to eat at Magoo's. I had heard it was a popular place. I asked the only person workin there what was good for lunch. He said "our kosher hot dogs." We ordered the hot dogs and they were plain and boring and the bread tasted old. He brought us mustard and ketchup. I asked for mayo and it took him about ten minutes to bring it to me as he was doing paperwork behind the counter. We go to Magoo's one to two times a week after our cycling club gets done. It's a warm old-school sports bar vibe. Jenny (the bartender) is the bomb! She knows all of us by name. Works very hard and is always very nice to us. My only criticism is that their food menu is a bit light. Their sandwiches and dogs are very good. But it would be nice to have more options. If you are in the mood for a good beer and sports this is a great place! read more

Great dive bar. Love the Shuffleboard (when you can get a chance to play). The crowd tends to be college students or 40-50 year olds still thinking they can hang with the kids. Some of the bartenders they have had over the last 2 years have been less than desirable with attitudes and if you're not a regular patron or one their personal friends, then say goodbye to service. My fiance' and I made the mistake of eating here. DISGUSTING. Completely inedible sorry excuse for "food." Granted we should have been suspicious of eating here in the first place. But in our experience, most dive bars have pretty damn good burgers. Magoos doesn't even come remotely close. Imagine the kind of frozen, substitute meat filler (with soy, wood pulp, other unrecognizable ingredients), microwaved burgers you would get at 7-11. That's what they serve here -- for $6.95! Needless to say, even though we were very hungry, we took one bite and couldn't finish the rest. When the bartender asked if we were through, I politely told him that it tasted like meat substitute (I thought they may have served us soy, veggie burgers by mistake.) He mumbled that it wasn't. No apologies. No "can I get you anything else instead?" Very rude. Having both worked in restaurants and bars for decades, we were taken aback by this complete disregard for customer service/satisfaction. Yes, customers can be a pain in the ass. But when they have a legitimate complaint, as servers, we always look to do something to soften the blow. So against my fiance's wishes (because we work in the industry we very RARELY complain), I decide to talk to the "chef"/owner(?). When I ask her about the kind of ground "meat" they use, she concedes that it is some sort of meat by-product. But again, she doesn't offer to take them off the bill or comp us drinks or even just a sincere apology. Instead, she snaps "no one has ever complained before." Wow. There is no way that anyone who has ever tasted real/100% ground beef could not notice the difference. Or, all the other rubbery-Magoos-burger-eaters must be wasted. In short, she too was rude, unprofessional, and childish for a woman in her 60s or 70s(?). Having thought we left the building (my fiance' was in the bathroom), they proceeded to make fun of us. Laughing that we wanted a free meal. Hardly. We left hungry. And still tipped our bartender over 20%. In return, we received a lack of respect, human decency, and customer service. I would say just go here for drinks. Yet, in this day in age when most of us need to be choosy about where we spend our hard-earned money, I would suggest going to an establishment that still cares about their customers. read more
