    Triple combo x2

Awesome hole in the wall in Kaimuki! Came for dinner one night because craving sushi but their menu is so large my boyfriend and I both ended up getting teishoku sets instead and sharing the nigiri set. We both ordered the triple combo which came with sashimi, tempura and main dish choice (unagi, butterfish and steak). Everything was super good and the tempura is great eaten fresh! Service was okay, it took a bit to get our hot tea or water refills but otherwise we had a nice dinner. Lots of parking in the paid lot that is shared with the other businesses.

Like it's name would suggest, Maguro-ya specializes in maguro, or tuna, in a variety of dishes. Located in Kaimuki (10min drive from Waikiki), Maguro-ya has been in business for 25 years and their food shows why they have been open so long. Parking is easy with a gated parking lot behind (0.75 per hour) and a rear entrance. The atmosphere inside is family and neighborhood friendly and fairly quiet. More traditional Japanese than Hawaiian influenced, the menu features many tuna dishes, available braised, grilled, fried, raw, in soup, etc. add in appetizers, noodles, and the ability to get ala carte, rice bowl, or teishoku (set meal or combo). We tried the maguro zukushi teishoku with the tuna cooked 3 ways - sashimi, grilled, and fried) and everything was fresh and well cooked. The sashimi was fresh, the grilled was firm and tasty, and the fried was not dry inside. There was also a lot of food. For couples or families, this place can be good as well as there is something for everyone.

One of Hawaiis best sushi restaurants. Be sure to make reservations. We sat at the bar and ordered omakase. Everything was delicious. It was an amazing dining experience. Staff are super friendly and helpful.

Maguro-ya ***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ***** Food: ***** Value: *** Menu: ***** (large menu) Ambiance: **** Service: **** Parking: **** (municipal lot behind) Decades ago I asked my intern, Rumi, who was born and raised in Japan, "Where is your favorite authentic Japanese restaurant?" She responded, "Maguro-ya." So I decided to give it a try and I've been going there regularly since. When I took my dad, it became his favorite Japanese restaurant and he always ordered the Karei Karaage. My favorite dish is their Seafood Tempura, my wife's favorite dish is their Miso Butterfish, and my daughter's favorite is their Vegetable Tempura & Zaru. They have one of the largest assortment of traditional Japanese dishes on the island. You can order Teshoku (complete meals) style or Izakaya (individual dish) style. A secret I leaned in Japan at a Tempura Bar was to only use the dipping sauce for the vegetables. The owner/chef said to dip all the tempura seafood lightly in squeezed lemon then in a little sea salt. Wow! It brings out the flavor of each type of seafood. Everyone that I've shared this with now uses salt and lemon for their seafood tempura. RATINGS & RECOMMENDED ORDER: Seafood Tempura = A+ my favorite Miso Butterfish Teishoku = A Sashimi & Tempura Teishoku = A Karei Karaage = B Tonkatsu Teishoku = C (Sorry for the limited dishes, I only order their Seafood Tempura. Food was really good. Service was excellent and ambience felt nice. We got there at 8pm and they closed at 8:30pm. Not once did we feel rushed. We had butterfish, tofu salad, sea eel tempura, and more. Everyone liked what we ordered. Sorry, I usually take more pictures but I was so hungry and ate too quickly.

The food selection and presentation is great experience. The menu gives you many choices and there are also specials posted on the walls. The staff is friendly and very efficient. I would recommend you make reservations as it is one of kaimuki's best kept secrets. Highly recommend this to friends and family

3 item teishoku with misoyaki butterfish, tempura, and sashimi

We've enjoyed eating at Maguro-ya in the past but have not been there for several years so were happy to see the quality and service remain. My husband and son and I went in for an early dinner last weekend and even though they called to push back our reservation by 15 minutes because they said it was busy, when we arrived there were several open tables. (From past experience, we always make a reservation!) Parking is easy behind the restaurant in a large paid parking lot. For appetizers, we ordered edamame and some homemade fish cake. They were sadly out of chawanmushi (my favorite!) and agedashi tofu. We had nasu misoyaki, which came during our meal, which was very delicious - half a Japanese eggplant, slathered with miso and baked. It was so soft you scooped it out with a spoon. My husband and I both had the Maguro Teishoku, their signature dish with maguro served three ways: sashimi, deep fried Katsu, and broiled. It came with rice, miso soup, some small little sides, and a salad. My son had the three item teishoku with misoyaki butterfish, sashimi, and tempura. Everything was delicious and despite being crowded, the food came out quickly. I was hoping to save room for some dessert but was too full and took home quite a bit. There are always specials up on the wall that look delicious. I know they will be fresh so maybe I'll try one on our next visit!

My friends and I were looking for a place to grab dinner, and one of them suggested this restaurant, indicating that it was one of his favorite restaurants. It's located in between Happy Days Chinese Seafood Restaurant and Kim Chee Restaurant No 2 on Waialae Ave. There's a paid parking lot behind the building for $0.75 an hour. If not there, there are paid and free street parking spots around the entire neighborhood. Street parking becomes free after 6pm. I ordered their Maguro Rib Karaage and Sashimi Teishoku. It came with a set of sides and rice. For some reason, I read it as "Maguro Rib, Karaage, and Sashimi" - a three protein meal but it was actually "maguro rib karaage" as in deep fried maguro rib LOL. Whoops, my mistake. However, the maguro rib karaage was really good! Lots of flavor and didn't have a fishiness to it. It was just a lot of work to eat as it was the rib. The sashimi wasn't a favorite. I didn't think it was as fresh as it could have been. I got a variety of different sashimi including sea beam, tuna, seared tuna, and sauced tuna. None of the tuna was fresh in my opinion but they were better than the sea beam. The sea beam was very chewy and had a weird fishiness that I could not stomach. A huge perk about the teishoku was the amount of food it had. I was getting so full 2/3 of the way. My group also shared a Spicy Tuna Roll and a Mentai Yamaimo Roll. They weren't that special in my opinion. The spicy tuna roll was definitely much better than the mentai yamaimo roll. The mentaiko, unfortunately, wasn't as fresh as I hoped, and it lacked the delicious fishy kick that makes it mentaiko. They were a good starter as these sushi rolls could either be a handroll or cut roll to share among everyone. The night we went was a Thursday night, and the entire restaurant was completely full. However, there weren't any parties waiting outside to be seated. We waited about 30-45 mins for our food. It might have been because we had a table of 6 people, and they wanted all the food to come out at the same time. Our shared order of sushi rolls came out a little before our entrees did. Thankfully, we weren't too pressed for time and talked the entire time as we waited. Overall, this was an okay restaurant. I haven't tried it before but happy to have tried it now. My expectations in Japanese food may have increased over the years due to my frequent travels to Japan, so it may seem like a semi-miss for me here. However, the service was impeccable as everyone was nice, and our waiter continuously checked up on us.

Really lovely sushi restaurant with high quality fish. There's paid parking in a parking lot next to the restaurant and also a mix of free and paid street parking nearby. The interior space has counter seating for 6-8 people and a few tables for larger parties. Reservations aren't required, but are recommended if you want to get a seat at the sushi bar. They serve mainly teishoku sets and sushi - I pretty much just come here for the sushi. Service can be slow at times if you're ordering raw fish since there's usually just the owner doing the prep at the sushi counter. The fish are all fresh and this place has some of the best akami zuke that I've ever had. Other highlights are, depending on the season, tachuo (belt fish, a white fish with a very clean taste and bouncy texture), shima-aji (striped jack, lovely texture and slightly sweet), and amaebi (sweet shrimp, sweet and nice mochi-like texture). The sushi is comparable to high-end omakase spots without breaking the bank.

    Sashimi & Tempura Teishioku

Be prepared, because this place has a wide variety of dishes you can pick from! Personally, I was super overwhelmed by just looking at the menu. ***What I ordered ~ **Sashimi & Tempura Teishioku (8/10) ~ Hearty, good, and filling! The tempura was crispy and cooked to perfection. As for the sashimi it was okay, they gave a few chunky pieces and some seared one as well. The only reason why this wasn't a 10 was because there wasn't anything crazy that stood out to me. Simple and it's like a you get what you get. **Unagi Pressed Sushi (10/10) ~ Cooked and crispy! I love the flavor of the unagi sauce and I love that it was cooked so perfectly too. I would highly recommend getting this!! Overall, Not bad! I wouldn't mind coming back. HOWEVER, it is SUPER hot in there for some reason. Not sure if they keep the AC off, but luckily we were sitting by the front door so when customers would come in and out you would get a small breeze. Lastly, service was okay. You would kind of have to wave staff down to get something.

My husband and I were in the mood for Japanese and we recently decided to try Maguro-Ya as we live nearby. Inside has the feel of an authentic "old-school" Japanese restaurant and it was nice that our waitress was a native Japanese speaker. The food was excellent and fresh. We started with a maguro appetizer which we ate up quickly. I love agadashi tofu and the tofu here was served piping hot and the dashi very flavorful. I also enjoyed their tempura and kappa maki. My husband ordered a tempura, sushi, and udon combo and he enjoyed it very much. I thought the udon broth was really good. We look forward to coming here again.

I understand the hype. The best comparison I can make is this: what Ichiran did for ramen, Totoya…read morehas done for seafood bowls. It takes something familiar, strips away the unnecessary decisions and turns it into a process that's incredibly easy to enjoy. The restaurant is tiny, but everything feels deliberate. The staff keeps things moving without making you feel rushed, our waitress was genuinely wonderful with our kids and even the people waiting around us couldn't have been friendlier. It felt like everyone was in on the same little secret. The first surprise wasn't even the fish. It was the cabbage salad. Shredded cabbage, crispy noodles, miso yuzu dressing. That's it. Somehow it's one of the best salads I've had in a long time. It's the kind of dish that makes you wonder why nobody else bothers to do something so simple this well. Then came the negitoro bowl. The ikura shower is absolutely worth the extra ten bucks. Yes, it's a little theatrical with the bell ringing, but if you're going to pour an avalanche of salmon roe over my bowl, you might as well make a show of it. The crab miso soup upgrade is another easy yes. The crab almost feels like they're apologizing in advance for ruining every ordinary bowl of miso soup you'll have afterward. It isn't perfect but nothing is. The rice was a little clumpy and needed to be broken apart. After a while, the flavors begin to blend together more than I expected and those beautiful sheets of nori lose the battle against Hawaii's humidity pretty quickly. They look incredible, but they become soft before you can really enjoy them. I also wish I could order another bowl of that cabbage salad by itself. Our kids demolished the udon. Perfect texture, comforting broth and probably the easiest win of the entire meal. Will we come back? Absolutely. Totoya isn't trying to reinvent Japanese food. It's taking a handful of excellent ingredients, removing the friction and executing the experience with remarkable consistency. Sometimes that's what great restaurants do.

The space is small, so there can be a wait, but don't let that discourage you. The restaurant is mostly bar seating, and people tend to order, eat, and head out, so the turnover is surprisingly quick. It's not really a spot for large groups, but that's part of its charm. One thing you absolutely have to order is the salad. I know it sounds strange to get excited about shredded cabbage, but it's actually the yuzu dressing that is incredible. It strikes the perfect balance of sweet, savory, and citrusy flavors in a way that I've never had anywhere else. Unfortunately, it's homemade. And I'm still thinking about it. Let's not skip over the main attraction - the bowls! Every bowl I've tried is delicious, but you need to get the negitoro with the shoyu egg so you can mix it altogether and make little hand rolls with the nori. Perfection!

Lunch and dinner menus are very different FYI! For drink I ordered the Shiso Crazy. Great drink and love the name! More on the sour side than sweet. For appetizers we got gyoza and the Okinawa sweet potato salad. The gyoza was very flavorful. Now for the potato salad... this was one of the best flavor combinations I have ever tasted. I would come back just to eat this again. The creaminess of the potato with the small pop of saltiness from the ikura... it's the perfect blend of flavors and textures in one bite. For entrees we got the full size spicy ahi Don and the mentaiko pasta (one of the new menu items). Both were good but the mentaiko pasta could've used a bit more salt based on my preferences. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. The restaurant is a decent size but I would make a reservation if you're coming during peak hours. Overall, I've never had a bad experience here and I'm glad I finally got the chance to come to try their dinner menu.

I was ready to write off Kaimuki Shokudo after a middling experience at dinner, but I'm so pleased…read morethat we gave the restaurant a second chance at lunch. At lunch, Kaimuki Shokudo transforms from an izakaya to an excellent soba restaurant that rivals i-naba. And with the introduction of lunch specials, Kaimuki Shokudo has cemented its place in our rotation of restaurants. The restaurant has chic, minimalist decor, with wooden accents and paper lanterns adding a touch of warmth to an otherwise black box. The ambiance effectively evokes a restaurant tucked away in a Tokyo alleyway. It's all quite effective. The restaurant's menu features a good mix of hot or cold soba, ranging from zaru soba and tempura soba to pork and mushroom soba and duck watercress soba. The noodles have a good texture and slight chew. You can add a mini bowl (sukiyaki, beef curry, maguro, veggie tempura, spicy tuna) for $7 to any of the hot or cold soba dishes. I'm partial to the veggie tempura and spicy tuna. The restaurant also offers a teishoku lunch set for $20, featuring a half-size kake soba, half-size sweet potato salad, two pieces of sashimi, rice, and sukiyaki beef or ahi katsu. (The restaurant formerly offered grilled saba in lieu of ahi katsu but has sadly removed that delicious option.) I'm partial to the teishoku because it feels more like a complete meal, with a good mix of different tastes and textures. I sometimes like to add an a la carte order tempura ($5-17) to the teishoku, as I like that the restaurant's tempura batter is light and airy (compared to local versions). Lunch portions are on the smaller side, but it's hard to complain when you compare the prices of Kaimuki Shokudo (more affordable) to i-naba (more expensive). It's also worth noting that this is one of the few restaurants in Hawaii where you can use your Chase Sapphire Reserve dining credit, so your meal might be cheaper than you think if you use the right card. Reservations are recommended if you'd like to sit at a table, though you can probably snag a seat without one if you come early or are all right with sitting at the large wrap-around bar/counter if you don't have one. Paid parking is available in the municipal lot behind the restaurant, but it can be difficult to secure a spot if you arrive at prime meal times, especially on the weekend. So, budget a few extra minutes to find a space in case the lot is packed.

I wasn't expecting much since it was the last meal available. I decided to try it after organizing my clothing in my closet. Honestly I wasn't hungry, but it was approaching 5pm which was very late for me, lol. I nuked it a little to get it warm removing all the cold items out first then ate the side dishes first I thought mmm, not bad. But then came the chicken and I was mesmerized by the first bite. I thought okay take a few more bites then judge it. So I thought maybe I was starving, so I dipped it into the sauce it came with and my mouth started to have a party inside! The dip reminds me of Japan and the red rice is exactly how my Okinawan mom used to make it. Well, I'm sold and if this is the least wanted plate of the entire day I can't even imagine how spectacular the others must taste. The lady at the register was so kind and apologized several times for being sold out. I totally understand but she definitely meant the apology I can tell. Reminds me of Japan again and she was wearing a mask which is a Japanese custom these days. There is a little table outside for seating of three I think. If you're a fan of rice, you'll appreciate that they use authentic Japanese short-grain rice. This is the kind of place I love discovering. You can tell they take pride in their cooking and make it a point to prepare everything from scratch. The restaurant is small and only allows about three customers inside at a time, so it's takeout only. The prices are exactly what I'd expect for fresh, homemade food, and in my opinion, it's well worth it. Food: Service: Quality: Value: Overall: I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu.

I got there a little earlier and they let me know before being sat that they close at 2pm. While ordering our drinks we were reminded again that they close at 2pm so we ordered our food at the same time feeling rushed. The Sashimi Zen and Chirashi Zen tasted beautifully. We enjoyed the quality of fish and variety available. As we were eating the waitresses would come by and take any empty dishes from our sets while reminding us again, that they close at 2pm. It felt really rushed and unwelcoming. Before we could finish eating they dropped the bill off to our table and checked to see if they could take payment within less than a couple minutes. The waitress then came back with a bag for us to take the sake home. We quickly finished our meal and I paid cash so we could just leave at this point. They were so quick to rush us out that while we were standing outside the restaurant the waitress came outside to let me know she didn't put everything she needed to charge us for on the bill so I needed to come back inside to pay an additional amount. After paying a second time she gave something to my sister for her birthday and sent us on our way. Considering there were other parties still seated in the restaurant when we left and they were aware of us celebrating a birthday I feel pretty disappointed about our experience there. We weren't offered an option to order dessert and they were in such a rush to get us to leave they didn't even have the bill rung up correctly. The food was great but we can get better service for the same quality elsewhere.

The interior also made us feel like we were in Japan. Off the happy hour menu, we ordered the Tofu Salad, Tuna with avocado and chili oil, and the Tuna with wasabi. We also ordered the Presidential Curry, which was a curry rice dish with chicken karaage and their mille feuille tonkatsu. For the price, the portions of the tuna were very generous. I also really enjoyed the curry dish. I liked the way that the katsu was cut, every bite was crispy. It was a great value meal. We will definitely be back to try some other dishes!

Customers requested an affordable and hearty bento ( per their IG ) and they served up the Presidential Curry. Thank the heavens they didn't call it the Tump Curry...the roux would have to look orange. Also, you'd have to get a Diet Coke with the meal. It features three pieces of their Mille-Feuille Tonkatsu, two pieces of their Chicken Karaage, and their signature 24-hour simmered curry all over a bed of rice. $22 and bargain for what you get, as I am stuffed...and I can eat a lot. I got an extra side of tartar sauce for $1.15. It was very good, especially their karaage chicken, as good as any that I've ever eaten. Curry is good, if a bit mild, as it is neither sweet ( as one would expect from Japanese curry ) nor spicy like Thai/Viet/Indian curries. You can find Minatoku Kitchen on the corner of South King Street and Hausten Street - across from Long's. Side street parking ( good luck ) or the lot at Long's. Ordered via the Clover app. It was ready as I walked in a couple of minutes before the time I requested.

The 19 course omakase featured so many fresh seafoods, tempura, miso soup, dessert... Way better than alot of other omakases in town For your last morsel you get to pick anything you ate earlier n have it again Could have gone w Fatty Otoro or Popping Fresh Ikura but chose Ama Ebi Why? Because it was so Juicy Sweet n only in season now!

The space was clean and had a more upscale feel. Did the 19-course omakase and each bite was incredible. The fish is fresh from Japan, and you can see and feel the attention to detail. My parents do not like "fancy" experiences (they've dined at 3 Michelins but prefer a more laid back experience), and this place struck the right balance. It's upscale but also familiar. Favorite bite was the chutoro and second favorite was the chawanmushi :) That chilled clam soup was something else - I wish I could have a whole bowl of that! Definitely make an effort to check them out!

The sauce they use for the katsu is a familiar taste; they use bull-dog sauce. The dressing tastes like the dressing from Sams Club. I don't remember it being this way. Maybe they changed? I feel like Koromo and Tamafuji are better. I guess maybe this place is considered a take out spot? It's pretty much serve yourself water, bottle drinks only and order at the counter. The place is clean and wasn't busy. You're most likely going to have to get street parking or go to the paid parking area and walk around a little bit. If you want an OK katsu place, I guess this is the place.
