We currently rent a property through Mahoney Davison and have for about 6 months now. The customer service is non existent and we have been without a dishwasher now for over two months. Even after they received approval from the landlord, over a month ago, they have taken no initiative and neither has the middle man they use, Kelly's Appliance. For some reason they order the product through Lowe's but have Kelly's attempt to facilitate the process and needlessly play the middle man. No one assumes responsibility or takes ownership for the ball being dropped consistently. The dishwasher is about 20 years old and someone from them said it wasn't working due to us not rinsing/washing the dishes thoroughly enough before putting them in. A representative telling a grown man that was extremely insulting and unnecessary. Finally someone came out and recognized how old the washer was and quickly recognized it wasn't working properly. With a family of 4 the loss of a dishwasher is pretty impactful and it is extremely frustrating the lack of follow through by both Mahoney Davison and Kelly's Appliance. With another issue we reported regarding the seal on a shower door they had someone come out and install it wrong. I let them know months ago and still no action has been taken. I was just trying to prevent the owners from incurring any major water damage. As an active duty military member we were hoping to stay in the same home for the duration of our tour. Sadly we will most likely look to move after our year lease is up due to lack of professionalism by this company. read more

Property managers? Property mis-managers! We moved into one of their rental properties in December. Heat didn't get fixed for over a month and our whole family froze! Their solution? Two space heaters for a 2,000 square foot house. After that every appliance went out during our year plus in the property: dishwasher, refrigerator (I won't even go into how much frozen and refrigerated food I had to throw away because Sara's suggestion was to find a neighbor's refrigerator to store food in, for a large family and during COVID?!?), then the washing machine AND dryer. The toilet backed up, shower didn't drain, shutters and shades were broken. Upon move-in tenants are asked to complete a check list of everything dirty, missing or broken on the property. I noted everything on my extensive 'check-in' list and NOTHING WAS DONE ABOUT ANY OF IT. Nothing was cleaned or repaired. THEN, and this is where it gets good, I was held to a much higher level of clean and was charged to clean one window, one closet and one toilet which supposedly took two people two hours to accomplish. Messages sent and left elicited late or no responses. Me? I would strongly recommend renting elsewhere. read more

I had a terrible experience with Mahoney Davison which began to border on what felt like harassment of me and my senior disabled mother. My experience with Kerry, in particular, has led me to write this review. I found Kerry to be rude, unprofessional, unkind, and misleading to the point of dishonesty, for example, claiming she hadn't received emails which I then had to forward to her to show she'd received them. Mahoney Davison tried to bully funds from me to make repairs to the property which existed when I moved in. Fortunately, I remembered that their website marketing photos showed the condition, which I pointed out to Kerry, and then suddenly the story changed to the owners made the mistake and not Mahoney Davison. Mahoney Davison and the owners of the property I lived in would not remove a wall-mounted 50-inch TV from the living room wall when I told them it didn't work. It was used as a "plus" to the property I rented. It worked for two months off and on. When I notified Mahoney Davison that it didn't work and I would like it removed, Amy Jackson refused and said, "I don't see what the problem is." We never paid our rent late. We left the property in better shape than we received it in, and yet we were harassed and, frankly, bullied. I would never lease a property managed by Mahoney Davison again, and I would strongly encourage anyone who cares about the treatment of their tenants and the ethics in their business relations to not use the services of Mahoney Davison Property Management. read more

I rented a property through Mahoney a year and a half ago. Sarah could not have been nicer or more helpful. I was really excited to have found a property so close to downtown and it served its purpose for awhile. I started having quite a few problems a few months in, including a plumbing issue and a gas leak. It wasn't Mahoney's fault though, they were always very quick to get someone to address the issues and I do believe this is an issue with many of the old historic homes that have been broken up into multiple units. I am writing this review with 4 stars though to praise the employees they have hired. Laura and Korin were so wonderful to work with and always got back to me incredibly quickly. My security deposit was quickly returned in full. I would not hesitate to recommend Mahoney to others but do be prepared for potential issues in the older homes. read more

We lost our home in the Tubbs wildfire in 2017 and rented through Mahoney Davison for about 21 months while our place was being rebuilt. Obviously, this was an extremely stressful time in our lives, and we appreciate how kind everyone was. We had nothing but a positive experience with everyone who works here. We didn't have much in the way of maintenance issues, but when we did, they were handled promptly. We also got lucky in that the owner of the property was very good about going the extra mile, and also made some nice improvements while we were there. I used to work in property management, so I know how difficult it can be to be a go-between with owners and tenants and that you often can't make everyone happy. It can be a thankless job because you only hear the complaints. Moving is stressful for all tenants, even in the best of times. And of course, not all owners can afford to do those extras. We feel very fortunate that we had such a pleasant and comfortable experience, and know that many in our situation were not as fortunate--we heard from others who experienced things like rent gouging from shady landlords and/or having to move multiple times while rebuilding. Mahoney Davison seems to pride themselves on treating people fairly, keeping the properties they manage well-maintained, and being part of the greater Sonoma county community, and it shows. read more

I recently found two homes on Craigslist that I was interested in being managed by MD. I sent an email via CL and within the day had a reply and date to see both homes. That part of the process went very smoothly. I decided to turn in an application on one of the properties to start the process. I paid the $30 fee per-application as required. This was on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, on the Friday I received a call from Kerry Davison, regarding my credit score and some other issues. I more than get my credit score isn't that great and there are other issues with late payments, but my rental history is excellent. I've been in the same rental house for ten years and all of my previous rentals have been very close to that length of time. I would think that to a perceptive landlord they would be interested in rental history and good references from the previous landlord, all of which I have, rather than my late car payment or back taxes that I have addressed & resolved with the IRS. Needless to say within that day I received an email that my applications where denied or not accepted by the property owners. Seemly closing the door to any other properties that MD would have. I believe that MD preforms a good service screening applicants for there customers ( home owners) But I also believe the rub is, unless you have stellar credit rating with little to no blemishes, this company can't help you or seems less than excited about working with you, and you are wasting the application fee, of which I felt had happened to me. Had they been up front with me regarding how they screen applicants and the profile of which fits their business model, I would have not engaged them. I'm not saying don't do business with them, but be aware that they are cherry pickers! read more

I prefer to write positive reviews but if I can prevent any other renters from using this agency I would sleep better. Use WestGate or Century 21 Bundesen. Kerry Mahoney lacks professionalism and to be simple is just rude. We rented a property on 1351 Mountain View. We signed a lease which included landscaping. After we moved in we were told the landscaper would be the owner of the house. We immediately objected. We offered to do the landscaping ourselves for a lower rent which they objected. 6 months later no landscaper. My husband has to buy a lawn mower and we maintained the yard. Our request for a credit was ignored Multiple times. The property owner on 2 occasions came into our backyard without permission. We broke the lease at 9 months after a great opportunity for a Hero grant for a home loan (my husband is a firefighter)became available. We were treated like criminals after that. We offered to advertise, show the home on our time and did so. The home was rented within a few weeks. We were charged $900. Mind you NO rent lost. Kerry very rudely explained that they have to pay for a credit check and their time. Clearly I am in the wrong career. Amidst our move and the chaos with buying a house we made our last partial payment late 5 days. (Electronic Payment delays the time).The same person who could not return our calls or requests ..calls several times to inform us that we have a late fee. Never addressing the 6 months of credit we asked for. Our deposit was given back minus a late fee and no credit for the landscaping. Petaluma is a great community, but this agency does not care about their community partners. They exercise leisure and flexible when it benefits their agency needs and not those they serve in the community. We are a good family and now permanent home owners in Petaluma. We care for our home and community. If you value local companies that support their community than Mahoney is not a place you should give your business to. The one star is for the Sarah and Jill who maintained a level of professionalism and treated us with respect. Thank you. We have rented in Marin and San Diego with ease and hands down renting with Mahoney was traumatizing. read more

Awful company. From the very first meeting with the apparently ill educated front desk person, until a final non returned phone call - disastrous. Standing in the lobby discussing personal financial matters and not even the courtesy to be invited into a conference room was extremely humiliating. I don't know if they did on purpose ( shame) or they were just clueless enough to do it any way ( more shame). I asked the we continue the conversation in private when one of the workers popped out of her office announcing " I've just come back from vacation and am too busy to help you".. If you can't help me then keep your mouth shut and get on with your work. Do I care if you've just come back from vacation? Hell no. Subsequent dealings with other employees weren't much better, suffice it to say that Craigslist would probably be a better alternative to the smug, arrogant and disdainful treatment you can expect here read more

Staff treats you like you are inconveniencing them. They have wasted my time more than once. Rude. Disrespectful. Warning to tenants looking to rent: DO NOT RENT FROM MAHONEY DAVISON! I had NOTHING but problems from the moment I started doing business with them! I should've known before we even signed the lease... The first troubling thing was right after we decided on a move-in date and signed our lease. The office staff was not welcoming, and while that shouldn't decide whether you do business with someone, it should've been a sign that they would never be nice or helpful. A while after we signed our lease, and AFTER we gave our 30 day notice at our old place, Mahoney called us to let us know that they would have to push back our move-in date because the tenant "wasn't ready to move out." Luckily our old landlord was nice enough to let us stay an extra two weeks rent free! Oh, and Mahoney never even gave us a new copy of the lease with the new move dates! The tenant ended up moving out about two days before we moved in, so the carpets were still wet when we moved in. Not to mention, Mahoney NEVER painted the walls before we moved in, and they needed a paint job! They never did an official walk through with us because they were "too busy," and we were supposed to fill out a form on our own. Eventually things started breaking, and Mahoney was neither helpful, nor nice on the phone. We had open work orders when we moved out that had never been fixed or attended to (like a broken door, and a fireplace that needed inspection). We had a spigot break in the back yard that had been leaking for a bit (we were unaware), and this apparently caused mold in a kitchen cabinet. When we reported it, it took them WEEKS to do anything about it. All they did was "clean it out and paint." It still smelled just as moldy as before, and we stopped using it altogether. When winter came last year, we started noticing wet spots and mildew on the carpet, and puddles on the linoleum -- all in one line across the unit from front to back. There was a large crack in the patio slab out back along the same line. We reported it, saying we thought there was a possible problem with the foundation. They sent a plumber out who did NOTHING, and nothing else was done! (We later spoke to the new tenants, who left for a trip and came back to SOPPING wet floors. Mahoney refused to do anything about it. The new tenants threatened to sue.) At one point I ended up unexpectedly in the hospital when rent was due, and they didn't care; they still charged me a late fee, even though I had ample proof of my inability to bring them a check! I mean, come on, be human! The last straw was when we moved out. We hired a carpet cleaner. Jennifer from Mahoney stopped by the unit for her final walk through while we were at work, and she left me a voice mail saying everything looked great, and she could see that the carpets were clean. End of story, right? WRONG! A few days later, Mahoney suddenly changed their minds and decided the carpets weren't clean enough, and they brought in another company to do the job again. They then proceeded to try and charge US for it! They claimed the new tenants found urine stains upstairs and that there was black pet hair along the stairs; funny thing is, we had a white dog visit us one day a month, and she only stayed DOWNSTAIRS! (we also spoke to the new tenants and they were shocked to hear this, because they had never complained of anything to do with carpets!) We fought them tooth and nail over the carpets. They decided not to charge us. When we received our deposit check back, there was suddenly $140 worth of cleaning done to the unit! I know we cleaned that place better than it was before we got there! Sorry for the long review; I just think it's worth telling all of the ways in which Mahoney Davison is a terrible business. I currently rent a lovely house on the Westside/Petaluma, managed by Mahoney Davison. I have lived there for over 2 years and my experience with the MD team as the property managers has always been positive. Margaret and the rest of the staff consistently responded immediately to any issues. Of course, I haven't had many because they do a very good job with actual upkeep and maintenance - not waiting for things to be crumbling down before fixing them. I love that! There are several houses on the property and so their team is regularly around besides doing the standard annual checks. I love this too because they often see what needs attention before I even realize it does! They make sure the landscaping is is well maintained and are proactive about getting the large trees on the property trimmed regularly so that they don't pose a property damage hazard. Also, I am extremely appreciative of their screening process. Yes, it may be a hassle for some people that they are meticulous but personally, I like knowing that Margaret and the rest of the MD team do their job well so that I never had to have some psycho living on the surrounding properties :) read more

The property that I am renting is wonderful place for a single father to raise his kids in Petaluma. When I raised the issue of my displeasure with the landscapers...Kerry took care of business and replaced the landscapers. My kids play a lot in the backyard and it was important for me to have a kid friendly yard. On the few rare occasions we required some maintenance, she was quick to respond, very helpful and friendly. We were recently searching for a single-family home to rent and were quick to go back to Mahoney Davison, because we knew the properties they manage are well cared for. Margaret and her associates were very accommodating, pleasant, and professional in all our dealings. After owning and being landlords for 18 years on the East Coast, we moved to Petaluma 2.5 years ago into an older home in West Petaluma that was/is managed by Mahoney Davison. We just moved out last night, and I wanted to share my impressions: 1.) Even two years ago the Petaluma rental market was very, very tight. Be prepared to hustle, expect a credit check, expect to write a cover letter and don't feel entitled to rent a property just because you can afford it. There is a LOT of competition out there, and being unprepared or expecting to walk in and just get the house is unrealistic. Remember that owners get final say in who rents their home... so a dog, cat, boa constrictor, extra car etc. may make it that much tougher. Don't blame the management company as they are working on behalf of the owner to find the best renter for that specific property. What isn't a big deal for you as a renter (like a dog) is an unnecessary hassle in a competitive rental market for the owner. That's just reality. 2.) Our rental home was built in the 1920s and was not in perfect condition. Our expectation was that reasonable requests would be addressed promptly and professionally. People have to understand that these guys are "managers" and not necessarily owners. As my wife and I have been owners of rental property in the past, you better believe I wanted to have final say in what was done, and not have a management company think they could write checks for me. That being said, every issue in 2.5 years without exception was handled right away. Some items the owner chose to have fixed but not replaced, and our expectations were always met: we chose an older home, and when issues came up, Mahoney Davison responded to keep us and the property as safe and comfortable as possible. 3.) They have a team of subcontractors who are great. They are very friendly, very responsive and try their best to get the job done. Don't expect that everyone will drop everything just for you, but if you're reasonable and a little patient, everything will get taken care of. 4.) They have a pretty thankless job, trying to bridge the gap between an owner who wants/needs profits to be generated, tenants who want things perfect or who struggle at times to fulfill their obligations, and then they have the absolute joy of juggling contractors schedules/budgets along with the needs of both owner and tenants. It can't be an easy job for them and often we only interact with managers when there's a problem... so my only advice to would-be tenants is: try keeping that in mind when there is an interaction with them. I've found that a little compassion and a little patience goes a long, long way. They are total professionals and will take care of you regardless of how you act... but when it comes to living in a rental home, developing a respectful, courteous relationship with the owner/manager will make life easier for everyone. I was very excited to view a property of theirs but was called and told I couldn't be considered because my old landlord was a client of theirs and she didn't approve of me as a renter because I wanted to be compensated for my furniture that was destroyed from black mold. My old landlord tried to say it was my fault from watering my outside garden that she told me to keep up. She was trying to rip me off and since I'm not an idiot she now has a beef with me. Sad that Mahoney had to work with terrible landlords and I wish bad landlords didn't get away with bad behavior. Wouldn't recommend this company at all. read more

Working with MD was a terrible experience. They have horrible customer service. They obviously work for the landlord. We caught them in several lies after it turned out we knew the owner of the property and compared notes. We had been looking for over six months and they never once contacted us about a property knowing we were looking and ready to move. They wouldn't even show us properties because we weren't fire victims. After finding a suitable property and taking a look around it, they chastised us for asking questions about needed repairs to the home. Said plenty of people would take the property as is and we should just be happy. They could not believe we had the audacity to ask simple questions. Hoping we don't have to deal with them in the future. They are not accommodating to people who actually have full time jobs - you know the one you need to make money to buy/rent. No showings after 4:30 or on weekends. No office hours outside those times for signing papers either. They must think they are the only show in town. Try for a house listed by anyone else but MD. I can only imagine the nightmare you will have in buying a house through them. read more

I have rented from this company for about 8 years now. At first everything was fine. As soon as there was a problem with the house and we needed their assistance things went south. It took them 3 days to get them out to the house to fix things and when they finally did come out they could not have cared less-we were their last priority. Keri Davison, is the rudest person I have encountered with this company. I know other families that have rented from them and have the same problems.
