This place is a hidden gem! The service was super fast and our server Liz was bubbly and very kind. Inside there was a good amount of seating, but I sat outside due to the nice weather. It was nice and quiet and I liked how you don't really hear the traffic. Finally, the food was one of the top three places I've been for sushi in Gainesville. This place used to be pretty good, but now you'd be well served to go to just about any other sushi joint in town. Sushi is ok but way overpriced for what you get. As far as cooked food, I had the house combo fried rice last night and it was really poor- it tasted unpleasant overall, and the large shrimp were not deveined, thus forcing me to eat a large amount of shrimp excrement. Updated review to 1 star for cleanliness. Table was incredibly sticky. Wait staff, when asked if we could wipe it down, refused saying it was just wiped. Thought I'd sit outside with my dog for a quick meal. Ordered Nigiri 9 pc. Mori B at 6:50 right after sitting down. Apparently they "lost my ticket" after they served me my Miso soup though. After an hour of waiting, sushiless, I was given the excuse "our sushi is backed up" as food was being delivered to people who were seated after I was. Eventually had to ask a hostess to check on my food, which finally made them realize they lost the ticket. After they took my order a second time the food came in maybe 7 minutes though which was nice. They apologized a lot about losing the ticket but everything was still full price, even though this took basically my entire night. Won't be coming here in person again. read more

This could have very well been a 4 star experience BUT I was definitely forgotten about and the staff were especially rowdy. I would go into detail but I'll keep it brief and offer suggestions instead. As the only person dining in, I was able to choose my seat. Unfortunately the booth seats were very dirty with small crumbs. I was able to swipe my hand to get a few off the area I sat (not ideal or sanitary) but several remained on the bench surrounding me. I didn't think it wise to slide across and use my pants as a napkin. Staff who are coming in prior their shift should not be a disruption. A young lady who I later gathered would be starting her shift shortly after changing into uniform was very loud, yelling and laughing with coworkers about taking shifts. She did not know I was dining in since she made a statement about no one being there until she was informed by her coworkers. When staff are conducting a shift change, the staff member should follow up with their tables prior to leaving as well as the employee who would be taking over the table, instead of being engaged in their phones, gathering belongings & walking by the guest without acknowledgement & leaving. Reminder: I was the only person dining in. After waiting 10+ mins (potentially longer but to not exaggerate due to this unfortunate experience, I added a +) to order another roll and dessert, my server walked towards the restroom and back around on her phone with her backpack-- no acknowledgement...telling her rowdy coworkers goodbye. It took about 10 mins or so for someone to ask if I wanted anything else. At this time, I asked for my check. Please educate employees to show initiative. Several employees walked right by my table without making eye contact or checking in. The out of sight out of mind mentality is not the best when working in food service. Lastly, in regards to your employees, it may be best to break bad habits of employees who clock in and immediately ask coworkers/managers if they will be busy today so they can get a break. Food: The shrimp tempura was by the book & the crunchy roll was decent compared to others. Because I at least got to try to the food, an average rating of 3 stars will suffice. This restaurant was actually recommended to me so I drove a little out the way to give it a try. My assumption is that they are better able to uphold their standard when the servers are more busy and can focus on customers, upselling, etc. instead of the latest gossip. read more

I have been to a restaurant in a long time where I sent the food back and left. The quality of the fish looked so bad. Then I found out they were serving tilapia. This is my first time trying this place. The portions were very small. I spent $49 (including the tip) on this small Seered Beef, the John I Roll, and Miso soup. At least the soup was filled reasonably (some places fill it 2/3rds of the way). The sushi was "okay". It was better than grocery store sushi but not much better. It kept falling apart and I expected a lot more to it for $17. I know at Hana Sushi the rolls that are in this price range are delicious and have lots of toppings. This was not worth $17. I bought the seered beef to have it for lunch tomorrow. Again, very small portion. I always like to try places that I've never eaten at. I doubt I will come back here when I can go to Hana Sushi and get better prices, portion sizes, and better quality sushi. I was disappointed in this $49 meal. This spot is in Haile Plantation! In its new location, there's still outdoor seating and indoor. There's a little parking lot next to the outdoor seating, which I'm not a huge fan of because when people leave the light does shine on them. I had a Barbara roll and it was delicious. However their yum yum sauce (which is normally sweet everywhere) is spicy. It was definitely spicier than a spicy mayo. Service was a little slow but it was very packed. This past Friday (09/25/2020) I decided to go to Volcanic Sushi and Sake company. We tried to the location in Haile Plantation. The food was okay at best. We arrived on a Friday night around 7:30 and we got a table outside. I do like that they are sharing the space with several other restaurants in the area like Lime Rock and Patti Cakes. We sat down and we ordered our food. We decided to try several items out. We got the Tom Kha Gai Soup. It was very good soup, but it was piping hot. It took it a long time for it to cool down. I think they microwaves the soup instead of heating it up in a pot. It had an interesting taste to it and the meat tasted rubbery. But overall it was a big hearty cup of soup. We decided to then try a roll of Sushi. Volcano roll, which was a California Roll topped with baked seafood, eel sauce, scallions and masago. I saw pictures of others Volcano roll and it looked amazing. What we got did not look that good. It did taste okay, but I am sad this is what we got, cause the picture was deceiving. Finally we got the Volcanic Chicken which was grilled meat, served on a bed of stir-fried vegetables, on a sizzling plate and topped with teriyaki sauce. This was not very good. The chicken tasted off for some reason. You do get a lot of food and they serve this with brown rice or white rice. I don't know why but this dish just didn't taste that great. So this past Friday I went to Volcanic sushi to give them a shot, and to say I was not disappointed is understating the matter! I got there at around 7pm (it was supposed to be a group dinner, but everyone else bailed... that wasn't going to stop me, though!) and things were a bit busy. There are only a couple of tables inside, and then about half a dozen tables outside in their little courtyard area. I actually sat at a little two-top just outside their fenced in area, as I hate taking up a huge table when I am alone. Inside there is also a proper sushi bar to sit at, but this was also fully seated. To add to the mayhem, there was also some sort of dinner gathering in the main courtyard area outside. Regardless of the business of the situation, I was seated immediately at my little table with a menu, and water came out shortly thereafter. For an appetizer I ordered some spring rolls, then sat and perused the menu for a bit before deciding on a volcano roll and the red curry with chicken. When asked how spicy I wanted my curry on a scale of 1 to 10, I answered with my usual 12. No, really... make me cry. Consider it a challenge. My waitress, Ella, was able to take this kind of request in good grace, for which I am grateful. Yes, I know that dealing with requests like this are annoying, but she was a great sport with it. The spring rolls came out, and they were decent, but there was a lot of garnish alongside them that was superfluous... keep things simple with your items, reduce the cost, and I am much happier! After that came the volcano roll, and I was OK with it. I have had better volcano rolls (basically a California roll with baked seafood on top) around town, but it wasn't bad. I would explore some of the other rolls before going back to it. So you have gotten this far, and are probably wondering why I am giving five stars... well, it is because of the curry. When it came out and I tasted it, it was amazing. They didn't win with my challene of making me cry (few restaurants have) but the flavor of this curry was absolutely spot on! I love sushi and this place definitely satisfied my sushi craving. I've heard so much about this place from friends, so happy to have had the chance to check it out. Definitely check the hours because they do take a break in between their lunch hours and dinner (so 3:00-5:00pm). I think the best thing about this place is the quality of their food for the price that you do pay. Their prices for sushi rolls are competitive with others in Gainesville like Mahzu but they give you so much more. My friends got the dragon and Alexander roll, and what is usually 8 pieces at regular places is 10-12 pieces here. We came here for the first time late on a Saturday night. It wasn't too busy and the staff were warm and friendly. We ordered the crab Rangoon, wok seared beef, and chicken teriyaki. The food was very good but the dishes come with very few vegetables. The service was quite slow and we had to eventually get someone else's attention to get our bill.
