I'd heard such good things about this place from locals, particularly someone at a church nearby where we were visiting, so we were excited to swing by and check out one of the supposed best places in La Porte. Unfortunately, our experience was a complete miss. Parking here is awkward. There's not a proper lot, more of a driveway with grass nearby and people seem to haphazardly park with the idea that they'll be getting out in an exact order where they can just drive forward, over a curb, and exit. For those of us in smaller cars, that isn't really an option. The interior is well decorated to give an upscale feel. On a Saturday evening, they had a singer in a sequin dress and a beautiful voice that made it sound like you were listening to the kind of songs you'd hear on Sunny 99.1 or on Delilah's request show, but live. Right off the bat, we had issues with the drink orders. Items were missing, they were serving tea to people who ordered soda, sweet tea to people who ordered unsweet, etc. The worst was a drink from the bar that came out incorrectly THREE times. After the third time, the waiter offered to comp her something else. My friend took the waiter's offer and ordered a soft drink, but the bartender brought out the drink a fourth time anyway. When she got the bill, the soft drink was charged and the fourth take on the alcoholic beverage, which she never drank, was "comped" after she'd already told them she didn't want it anymore. The waiter dared defend what happened, which I felt was in poor taste since HE was the one who offered to get her something else at no charge. The entrees took forever to come out. We don't know what happened, but we were waiting almost an hour for the food. I was ready to get the hell out of there, and had it just been my wife and me, we probably would have. Unfortunately, we were in a bigger group and we all had long drives home, so we didn't want to be rude. The food was completely forgettable. I don't know of anyone who had anything good to say about what they got. My pork belly was decently seasoned and cooked through, but not quite well enough cooked to give the kind of sizzle and texture that made it worthwhile. The portions were also so small that I wasn't satisfied. My wife ordered the fish and chips. Instead of a whitefish or catfish, they served her fried salmon. The flavor and texture was... subpar... at best, and hardly the kind of thing you'd expect when ordering Fish & Chips in the south. Rather than wait another 30 minutes for a replacement entree, and probably get it wrong given how they were handling the drink orders, she powered it down and we mutually decided that we'd never bother to stop by this place ever again. read more

Rox: really like this place. You HAVE to get the Pan Seared Chicken with mushroom risotto. I hate mushrooms, but this is my favorite dish on the menu by far. They also make a killer martini and the bartenders are all great. Ps, it's usually cold af in there so bring a jacket. Mike: great food, Logan's bar service is on point, but I'll say what no one else will, Joe is a d&!k and makes it a tad awkward. Driving around a few days after the hurricane, we discovered that Main 101 was fully functional. This was our first visit with an already full parking lot. This place is so cute! The decor is perfectly placed. I love the art on the walls, the separate seating area and bar area as well. The fixtures are beautiful! There was a woman singing popular songs but in a chill style, very talented! We ordered drinks and were brought fresh bread and their signature basil butter which was amazing! The service was top notch from start to finish! Franchesca was our server and she was great!! All servers work together as a team. The owner greeted us and checked on us midway through dining and was welcoming and friendly. We ordered a Greek salad and a Caesar salad and I am in love with their dressing! We decided to split an order of fried shrimp with fries and onion rings. I'm not sure if they make their own tartar sauce or not but it has a really good flavor! The onion rings have a great batter and are perfectly cooked! I enjoyed the batter that the shrimp were done in as well. It provided a good accompaniment to the juicy shrimp. We were too full for desert but will look forward to it next time we visit! We've found our new local, favorite restaurant and glad we did! read more

First time here and it was to celebrate a birthday so we splurged. Tried their cucumber martini and the strawberry basil smash martini. Both were excellent. Not too sweet. Not too acidic. No overt taste of straight up alcohol which I find boring and unimaginative. But really perfectly prepared. They were really busy this Friday night though we were sat immediately. Love the hostess! Our server was also the bartender so we did have to wait a tad longer than I would have liked for our cocktails but it did not ruin the evening or anything. The timing was a little off as I like to completely enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail with my appy before made to feel I need to order my dinner. If I am going to spent $200++? I don't want to be made to feel as though I am rushed. I want to saver the food and the experience. I regret now not taking photos. Frankly I thought there would already be photos on Yelp of what we ordered. And, darn, as everything was plated and presented so beautifully. *sigh* A missed opportunity so we will definitely have to go back and recreate right? We started out with the spinach and artichoke dip served with a fresh bread with garlic and melted cheese on top. Delicious!!! Ordered both the filet and the ribeye. Both cooked to perfectly at medium rare. Seasoned well with a nice steak butter. It came with mashed potatoes and broccolini which were tasty. We also tried their Caesar salad with their homemade dressing which was to die for. We were served bread for the table with a soft herbed butter. Fantastic. I have no complaints about the meal and would eat those very same things again. Now. It was expensive. Of course I don't mind so much if the meal was superb and this one was. The service was excellent with the exception of the delay of our first cocktail. The second cocktail was spilt at the table, the server was horrified, and she profusely apologized while cleaning. I was not bothered as the drink mainly spilled on the table and floor. Not on me. Shoutout to Logan F. I would absolutely love being taken care by her at our next meal there. The place is really nice. Soothing if you will with their sand and sky color scheme. Acoustic tiles could eliminate a little more of the dinner noise but it was not bad enough to distract from eating and holding a conversation at the table. They had a male singer playing a guitar. He was talented and I like his song selections. It added to the experience instead of not allowing table conversations. They have a nice bar and it would be fun to enjoy their happy hour. Or have lunch. Or to enjoy that birthday dinner all over again! I love supporting local business and I cannot wait to come here again. read more

I've eaten here several times over the years, and I'm way late to the party with my review of Main 101. First, you will always see the owner. I've seen him wait tables, bus tables, serve as the host and (on my most recent visit) tend the bar. In my experience, when the owner is present, everything tends to go off without a hitch. Ignore the industrial exterior appearance. Main 101 is akin to a prohibition-era speakeasy or the Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy opens the black & white door to reveal a world of color. When you walk through the doors here, the transformation is instant -- a wonderfully pleasing dining room with plenty of light woods and linen napkins on every table. It's dark enough for a date night, and light enough for a regular dinner. The place is immaculately clean, and the staff is dressed to the nines. Service here has always been good. In the evening, you might be entertained with live instrumental (not-too-loud) music, such as my party was on my most recent visit. Check the menu for yourself, but I would consider it to be "American/Continental." Sure, there are (Italian) pasta dishes and (French) desserts, but there are also burgers and fries, and really good fried Gulf shrimp. No matter how you categorize the menu, it's diverse ... and that's great for groups (or families) with different tastes. On my most recent visit, I ordered the appetizer deviled eggs w/ fried oysters; three others ordered a spinach flatbread; two had a bowtie pasta dish; one had a spinach and shrimp salad, while another had a burger and fries. In other words, there's something for everybody at Main 101. Finally, this place accommodates reasonably-sized groups. Three times I have been here with office staff celebrating retirements and promotions. In all three instances, Main 101 quickly adjusted tables so that 10-15 of us could break bread. Without a doubt, Main 101 is the best all-around restaurant in La Porte. It's also worth the drive for folks who might live a few miles away. read more

My family and I love this place! My father has been a long time customer and this is a restaurant we don't frequent nearly as much as we should. I also want for folks to know, that after the devastation of Hurricane Beryl, this place stayed open to cool people down and recharge their phones. Nestled in its own free standing building in downtown La Porte, Fine dining has a place and here it is. You don't have to drive to Houston, Clearlake or Kemah area for a fancy dinner. It's in your own backyard. Our server Sidney was very kind and attentive. Poor thing had to have refilled our drinks a dozen times. She was on it. On our most recent trip there with a family member, we started with their Bone Marrow plate as our appetizer. My cousin ordered a blackened chicken sandwich, my dad ordered a seafood pasta and I ordered their oh so delectable creamy tomato and basil pasta with a perfectly seared Salmon filet. Everything was perfectly cooked and delicious. The owner is a really nice and articulate man that always makes his way over to the tables. I've always enjoyed his presence and how attentive he is to his customers. Main 101 is such a great restaurant and more people should be keeping up with them and what they are doing. read more

Don't go during lunch and order the 8 oysters from the lunch menu and expect to get 8 oysters. We were told since they were so big he ( the chef) wasn't giving a full 8. But as I begin eating I quickly realized that the oysters weren't that big. They just had a lot of breading. Being from Louisiana they were actually average size. I don't know how big they are usually in Texas. That being said I was served 5 oysters at an 8 oyster price. My husband's salmon that was ordered medium came out very well done. I don't foresee ever coming back to the establishment. The unsweet tea was great. read more

I came out to La Porte to make a purchase of a grooming table, and hadn't ate all day. While looking for local spots, we ran across Main 101. And I'm so glad we decided to try it out. I'd post pictures of the amazing burgers, crab cakes and drinks, but they were so good and gone too fast. Wendy took care of us, and I felt like I had been a regular here with the sweet love. The owners even attended to us, showing they care about each and every single guest they have. Highly recommend this spot. I will definitely be back regardless of the drive! read more

I tried Main 101 Grill and Bar for lunch. The restaurant wasn't very busy, so we opted to sit at the bar. I had the spinach salad, one of my favorite dishes. Unfortunately, this one not so much. It was very bland, and a mix of many flavors. The warm bacon dressing felt out of place on the salad in particular and tasted too much like bacon grease. The pan seared chicken had an overall great flavor. I loved the white wine sauce. One of the things that stood out about Main 101 was the attentiveness of our bartender. What is there to say that hasn't already been said of this ICONIC La Porte restaurant? Let me try to find a way to entice, if you haven't been, or if you find yourself in the area (or just to take a very short, very close to Houston, trip for lunch or dinner there. Walking in the door you are greeted with an open planned dining room with the beautiful bar to the right (WITH tables and bar seating for full meals, not just apps or drinks or a combination of the two). The decor is light and flowing, which does not take away from the MAIN reason for being there. THE AMAZING FOOD and Chef Joe Bertulgia (please forgive if I misspelled it chef) has a knack for taking foods that you know and spinning them into something better than you've had previously. The menu is quite diverse, showcasing his knowledge of all types of cuisines and cooking styles. Beautiful dishes are presented by the servers, who were trained by Joe himself I found out, as well as his general manager Stella (if she's behind the bar, GET A DRINK FROM HER) who whips up epic craft cocktails with flair and absolute mastery. My entire family is still in awe of the lamb, the Greek salad (yes that is his own recipe for Greek Dressing), the warm French bread (warm and crispy outside, pillowy inside, room temperature butter) which means the details are being looked after quite nicely. From burgers, to CAB hand cut steaks, to daily fish (found out he goes every day to Kemah to retrieve them to maintain HIS level of care and quality, to the select vegetables he places delicately on the plates with your entrees. He is a true artisan and knows his craft so very well. One mention that the fried calamari appetizer is absolutely heavenly. Pair it with wine or beer hand curated by him and Stella for their maximum effect. This chef, this restaurant and his food, his management, and staff are absolute gems. Do not leave the area until you eat there AT LEAST ONCE. I promise you, you'll be back for seconds and thirds. read more

It's so strange how once my friend and I walked to this restaurant the hostess/waitress had the worst attitude, so bad you can see it on her face. She wasn't in a good mood at all! To all of a sudden, she was nice, friendly, and was glad to serve us. Things to know up front: this is considered to be upscale restaurant located in the heart of La Porte. From the outside, the place looks like any ole' restaurant such a hole in the wall establishment, but once you walk in you'll be amazed of how easily it transforms your mood. Also, get this do remember those etiquette skills yo mum had you learn when you were a kid? You'll need to use them here, if not people will look at you funny. It had me thinking I was in Clear Lake having a good meal with all of the nautical pictures, coastal decor, lighthouses, a mermaid and a dolphin sculpture, pictures lined all throughout the restaurant. Even in the breezeway they have some portraits for sale. The menu isn't a nice site to see. The prices weren't reasonable nor affordable and definitely not good for a college student myself..but heck my friend was choosing and she definitely has a high taste. I was more of clueless to not knowing it was a upscale restaurant. I was stuck on what I should choose to eat, so I settled for the salad and pasta which wasn't the best choice since I don't particularly like the taste of pasta in general. The Farfalle Pasta with Light Tomato Basil Cream Sauce was just OK; its pretty ironic how they combined five words to describe a dish that lacked so much flavor it definitely didn't live up to its $11 price tag. I only ate it because I was paying for it and I was semi-hungry.. Although, the best tasting thing here was the Greek Salad. It was definitely a lot more flavorful, delicious, and the house made dressing lit up my tastebuds. My friend ordered the Grilled Salmon with mashed potatoes, sautéed zucchini and carrots with a lemon butter sauce. She said that it was over the top delicious. The price tag of $15 definitely lived up to it. Oh, and her food most definitely looked way better than mines. The presentation of the plates, napkins and silverware was on point and very elegant. Here's a disclaimer: Be warned that if you order the crab cakes as an appetizer you will get only 2 cakes for $13. Taste is OK, not over the top and not worth that much money. More like a ripoff to me. I wasn't sure if it had real crab meat in it, it looked faux to me. My tab came out to be $32 which wasn't worth it, well the experience was worth it and the date with my friend was, but the food being that sky high for the quality and quantity wasn't. I'm sitting in the restaurant while I'm writing this. It couldn't wait. My friends and I came to this restaurant after we went to our friends funeral. Despite the circumstances we are going through, this restaurant went above and beyond in their service. Logan was the best waitress! It was the perfect end to our night and I cannot recommend them enough for anyone wanting a nice casual dinner, romantic dinner, or group event.
