My husband and I had an early dinner at Valdo's yesterday. This was the first time we had been here. When walking in all we could see was tacky, mismatched decor that looked horrible. The ceilings and lights were in horrible shape. The restaurant definitely needs some repairs and a decor change. BUT, the service was good and the food was Delicious! My husband said it was the best catfish he has ever had. I am glad we did not turn around and walk out after seeing the condition of the restaurant. We came on a Monday evening about an hour before closing. The restaurant was not that busy, maybe 3 tables occupied. Our dining experience was good and the food was tasty. They have a few different flavor profiles going on but they all seem to work. They do offer complimentary bread and butter, and have different happy hour specials during the week. For an appetizer, I ordered the crab cake appetizer that comes with two cakes and salad. I was very surprised at the size of the crab cakes! That basically could have been a meal by itself. I ate one so I could have room for my entree and I loved the lemon sauce that came with it. The flavor was yummy. Hubby the soup of the day which was like a crab bisque, which I got to try. It was creamy and a little on the sweeter side but also tasted good. For my entree, I ordered the stuffed Mahi Mahi. It comes with dirty rice and vegetables. I asked the waitress if I could sub the dirty rice and the only option she gave me was the Alfredo fettuccine. I was fine with that, but could not understand why substituting rice with the pasta would also take away my vegetables. So I had to pay an additional $10 to get a side of vegetables and I didn't like that. The portions of the entree are very big. Honestly, me and hubby could have split my whole meal and had been full off the one appetizer and entree. The stuffed Mahi was good and the sauce on it had a good flavor. The side of vegetables came with a trio of steamed broccoli, Zucchini that was sautéed in a sauce, and carrots. The waitress failed to explain that the carrots were actually a carrot puree. It was sweet and tasted almost like a sweet potato mash. It wasn't what I was expecting but surprised that it tasted so good. Everything individually tasted amazing, but I would not say that the flavor profiles are cohesive. Overall, it was a good dining experience and I left with food to still last me two more meals. I had the rest of the pasta with my crab cake for lunch the next day, and ate the rest of the fish and vegetables for dinner. read more

We showed up early on a Sunday for lunch, and we had the place to ourselves. I got the cozumel style fish. It was really good. Our waitress was very attentive. It was nice that it was quiet because we planned our vacation while we were there! I'd definitely come back. read more

This place was an unexpected surprise for us. We stopped on a whim for lunch and were quite impressed with the food. I had the Cozumel fish and my wife had the cactus fish. Overall the fish was perfectly cooked and flavorful, though the pickled cactus was a bit tart. There are not many restaurants this successful at cooking fish, and locally I would put Valdos somewhere between Tommy's and Papa's Seafood. The place has the look of a traditional American restaurant, but in a good way. There's a full bar which I was quite tempted by, but resisted at lunchtime. Service was good. We both really enjoyed the meal and saw many other dishes on the menu that we want to try. We are looking forward to coming back probably quite soon. read more

Stopped in to give it another try again. I'd describe the experience as "ok". Nothing great by any means! The service is barely there. Not friendly at all. Just honestly meeting the bare minimum of service. The food was subpar. Yes, the portions are huge as described in other reviews but having a big portion of blah food is just a lot of blah. Our drinks were good! We just won't be back. Such a shame too because this place could be great if they tried just a little harder! I was looking forward to meeting my family here, and have a good meal. Instead, I received food that wasn't fresh, in fact the avacado was over ripe, blackened and hard! The service was below the expected or usual standard of quality. The servers/manager were rude and basically said, "sorry, can't do anything about it, I'm just a server," and walked off, ignoring me as if I didn't say anything at all. Then, when we asked to speak to the manager, that same server said he was the manager! OMG! Don't waste your time or hard earned money eating here, not worth it! Service was so poor, and the customer service sucked! My sister, a retired executive chef was with me and she was shocked at how I was treated. Where do I start with this place... first off we had a reservation for 7 pm. We were then seated and told that we could not start ordering our food until 30 minutes because they had a bigger party than us who scheduled in advance. We spoke to the manager who gave us the same bs excuse. If this is a common thing here then make it known when confirming reservations or simply get more staff. So as we waited to order, we ordered drinks. My sisters Pina colada had no alcohol, we asked 3 times for a shot rum for the Pina colada because it tasted like a smoothie. So as we waited for the shot, the drink began to melt. An hour later, they give the shot of rum. Which we made sure they didn't charge for. My husband and I ordered the patron margaritas which was probably the only decent thing we ordered. We didn't receive our food until 9 pm. We ordered several different types of plates with different fishes and yet all our plates looked the same. The disgusting yams or whatever concoction that was, the CANNED corn, the huge stalk of brocolli that was not fully cooked. The sauces to the fish did no justice to the dried out fish underneath with the bed of rice hidden beneath it. Like seriously, they only put about a spoons worth. It's safe to say, you should pass on this restaurant and it's lack of staff and customer service. read more

My husband and I chose this place this evening after a day at Johnson Space Center. Our hotel was nearby and we wanted some great seafood. We were not disappointed! We started off with a small gumbo which was almost a meal in itself. For entrees, I ordered the Cozumel Fish, and my husband had the Fried Seafood Platter. Both we're fresh, enormous portions and served with fresh bread. We both brought home enough for another whole meal. We went rather early on Saturday (6PM) and it was not crowded. We ordered the seafood pasta (exceptional for seafood pasta) and the fried seafood platter (they literally had to use a large roasting pan to package it) the gumbo and calamari. Once I started walking inside, I knew I made a huge mistake but my kiddos wanted to eat dinner and walking in the door already got me too invested into this place. As our server walked us to our table, my inner Gordon Ramsey began to criticize everything until I sat on the outdated chair. This place is clearly an older place, even when I lived in the Bay Area I passed it up but when you crave seafood and want a mix of "Mexican" food, Yelp lead me to this place. The menus have not been updated for many years, even after washing my hands and grabbing the menu I felt the need to get my hand sanitizer out. Food stains filled the pages of the lengthy menu and the drink menu was not very much different ir not in worst condition. We ordered our drinks and we were also served fresh home made bread which was the only highlight of Valdo's. As an app, I ordered the large bowl of gumbo, reviews showed pictures of their gumbo and my daughter and I knew we had to have it so we shared one as we waited for our main entrees. Let's just say we did not finished our plates, the gumbo tasted sour and the nice decor of garnishes did not do any favors to the awful taste. I should have asked if it was made fresh before ordering it or at least if it was from today because we knew it was old. For our entrees, my daughter ordered their kids burger, my son their chicken tenders and I decided to settle for their 1.99 fish taco special since I was in fear to order any over priced mediocre tasting meal, one taco was ordered blackened and the other fried. My son was the only lucky one since his food was the best out of the 3. My daughter hated her burger and just ate the fries and the tacos were gross. The presentation did fool me for a sec but once I took that first bite, all I could taste was the dripping sauce from the coleslaw that jam packed the flour tortilla. The fish was nicely battered but it was so bland hence I ate it by itself without the weird coleslaw and runny sauce it was made with. The blackened fish wasn't any better either. Our server was great, and tipped her well. It was not her fault that the food was not good and she made sure our drinks were refilled the entire time. It so sad that a place like this has a great server but the food and ambiance is not up to par with service. Our server did forget my kids ice cream but at that point I just wanted out, I can buy my own Blue Bell Homemade vanilla tub. Sorry to say this but this was my last visit here. The empty parking lot at 7:30 pm should've also been a dead giveaway. For appetizers, Mexican shrimp cocktail and fried green tomatoes were ordered. The shrimp cocktail was pretty good. No complaints there. The fried green tomatoes were mushy, bland, and came with an Alfredo sauce that tasted like wet flour. No flavor whatsoever. That wasn't finished. Entrees consisted of seafood pasta in that awful "Alfredo" sauce. Also flavorless with overcooked seafood. The other entree was a fish dish that couldn't be consumed. Nothing was fresh. We let the waitress know that we didn't like our food and her response was "oh ok". So we asked for the check, paid, and left. Complete waste of time and money. I'm so confused by all of these good reviews. I've had a better experience at Pier 8 down the road. You walk in, order at the counter (pick your own seafood and you tell them how you want it cooked), pay, get a number, and your food is brought to you. What a disappointment and a waste of $70 I've never tasted the most bland food in my life. I ordered a pan sheard fish with shrimp crabmeat and avocado you had a choice of whether to get vegetables or rice while I chose vegetables because I don't eat rice but she did not tell me that it also came on a bed if rice. Why ask if you want vegetables or rice when it obviously all comes with it. And the fish was breaded nowhere on the description of the dish did it say it was breaded fish I think it was frozen fish they just threw in the fryer. We ordered crab fingers from the appetizer and they were obviously previously frozen and did not have any flavor whatsoever. We also ordered the fettuccine alfredo with grilled shrimp the shrimp was practically raw and the pasta had a weird sauce flavor to it. Not appetising at all. The only thing that was halfway decent was my ice water, seafood gumbo which wasn't hot at all and the large amount of bread they give you with a half a pound of freaking butter. They waste a lot of butter. You know they're trying to fill you up on the bread. I read so many posts saying the portions are just enormous well yeah they are but none of it was any good the sauteed spinach, corn, broccoli and this mushy stuff that's carrot souffle was awful. Oh dear Lord the vegetable plate at Luby's is much better. And I was shocked at the amount of people that were in there either they're for the aviance, alcohol or the enormous portion size because the food is not good it's a shame because the restaurant is in a prime location they just need a better cook. read more
