Service was quick and polite, the food was ready before I could drive the 3 miles to the restaurant, and it was easily the best I've had in a good long while. As you can tell from any Google search, you almost can't walk for tripping over a Chinese takeaway restaurant locally. Make a mental bookmark for Main House, though. Main House was the only restaurant open after 9pm on Main Street in Groton, MA. it was a wonderful find. the obvious husband and wife team at the restaurant served up a delicious chicken with black bean sauce and the largest vegetable spring roll I've ever been served, hot, crunchy and very tasty! it is small but clearly caters to take out customers, several of whom came in while I was there. friendly, helpful, and a pleasure. Pump up the rating for the Main House, they deserve it. Don't expect gourmet Asian cuisine (drive to Boston for that, and it will be hit or miss there too), but for quality Chinese takeout -- this is the place to go and we are lucky to have them in the area. It's a small operation, hard working mom and pop, the place is clean and well lighted (nod to Papa H), and the food is fairly portioned and as fresh as takeout can be. This is not a high end expensive Chinese restaurant, what it is is a quick in/out (take out only) Chinese restaurant only - so the review is reviewing it at that level and not compared to something like Bamboo or Chen Yang Li which are not valid points of comparison. The Main House bills itself as Chinese and Thai, I would score (given a comparison against similar peers for example in Lowell) I would rate the Chinese ***** five star and the Thai **** four star, the Pad Thai is a bit disappointing but will scratch the itch when in need. I usually get Chinese in general categories of seafood and vegetarian and wife gets chicken based meals. Judged by the above, it's great compared to other similar Chinese restaurants I've eaten around in other towns both north and east without naming names. It's my go to place for years when I don't feel like driving over 1/2 hour each way. For this, I highly recommend it. read more

Main House is a small Chinese takeout restaurant located in a quiet strip plaza. The place is very cozy which is order at the counter and there are a couple tables for eating in and small flatscreen TV. The menu offerings are the standard Chinese dishes and items including Cantonese, Mandarin, Hunan, and Szechuan cuisines. There are also a few Thai dishes on the menu. The prices here seem reasonable, most dishes $10.95 and under and house specialties $10.95-$14.95. 26 Combination Plates are offered here which include pork fried rice or white rice (except C26 Lo Mein) and choice of appetizer(s), Lunch $5.95-$7.25 (1 appetizer) and Dinner $7.95-$9.95 (2 appetizers). The menu offerings and pricing at Main House is very similar (almost identical) to Tea Cafe in Pepperell, except that the Thai Noodles are offered with the Combination Plates at Tea Cafe. I stopped in at Main House recently for lunch takeout. I ordered the C17 Shrimp with Cashew Nuts ($6.95 plus tax) with Pork Fried Rice and 3 Crab Rangoons, which was ready in under 10 minutes. The portion of food was a good size. The main dish had baby shrimp (not cleaned in some), chopped celery, carrots, water chestnuts, and cashew nuts in a light sauce, decent. The pork fried rice had a soft texture with tender pork cubes, onion, and egg. The crab rangoons (folded at the top) were crisp on the outside and filled with a mixture of cheese and minced crab stick., very good! I've been here more than a dozen times now and I've had mixed results. When it comes to American-Chinese classics, they don't shine imo. I would avoid the General Tso's and the Chicken Fingers for example However, if you're willing to try something a little bit off the beaten path, then the Main House can really shine. For example, #99 is a delicious dish, tofu with a rich pork sauce just like my Chinese pals used to make it. If you don't know what to get, try that with an extra order of white rice and that will serve 2 for very cheap. I'll get a photo if I get the chance! read more

I ordered fried "jumbo" shrimp and crab rangoons and my wife ordered crab rangoons and beef with mushrooms. My fried "jumbo" shrimp were not jumbo in the slightest. The size of the shrimp inside the fried batter was smaller than the size of a "medium" shrimp you would get from a grocery store. No where near what one might call "jumbo." The crab rangoons tasted alright, but had barely any filling in them at all. It was mostly overcooked wonton wrapper. The only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because my wife enjoyed her beef with mushrooms. I don't know how you can get away with advertising something as "jumbo" and then give the tiniest one. I would say they are a step up from the gross greasy Chinese places, but have a long way to go to reach the good Chinese level. The beef teriyaki is very good. The scallion pancake, sweet & sour chicken & orange beef are all good. The spare ribs are very greasy and the meat is really low quality. With most my reviews i am straight to the point so you can get an honest opinion and be on with your day. Pros: Keep in mind this place fits into the ""cheap chinese food" Category" but in this category they lead the pack! AMAZING amounts of food per serving/Meal combo, VERY cheap prices and the food is always fresh and hot! Menu selection is fantastic and the staff is friendly! An extreme rarity i find in chinese food locations these days. Cons: No real place to eat inside so plan to take the food home or not at all, Meal combo prices raise considerably for dinner (although you get an extra appetizer at dinner). Main House is tucked away in the Mill Run Plaza just a few minutes outside of Groton center. It is very small, meant for takeout only, with only a few chairs lining the window and a wall-mounted TV in case you are waiting for food. The staff are friendly, and while I was waiting they even allowed the child of another customer to come back and see behind the counter. Their menu is pretty standard, with similar offerings to other local takeout spots. They have a small list of Thai dishes as well. We ordered our normal litmus test of items: General Gau's dinner with chicken wing (yes, 1 wing) and boneless spareribs, Shrimp with Lobster Sauce dinner with crab rangoon (3) and egg roll, and pan fried peking ravioli. Portion size is generous, though prices are notably higher than other restaurants. The food is hit-or-miss: some things were great while others were far from. Surprisingly, their General Gau's is the best we've had in this area so far, which is great because few places do it right. The appetizers were all pretty good, with the boneless spareribs shining the brightest: big pieces, not a lot of fatty bits, and you could really taste the smoky grill flavor. Unfortunately, the pork fried rice, which is the staple of the meal, was noticeably lighter in color and disappointingly bland. Had to add soy sauce to give it some more flavor, but unfortunately they only provided 2 packets, which was not enough to share between us. I did not enjoy the lobster sauce at all. Appearance-wise, they prepare it similar to Asian Imperial Garden in Lunenburg, with peas and carrots mixed in, but the taste just wasn't there - it had a sweet undertone that just didn't work for me. Expect to wait a little longer for your food. I was told 15 minutes, but it ended up being 30. They didn't appear super busy, but perhaps they cook everything first come, first serve. I could see them cooking in the back as I waited and basically saw them put together my order. Make sure to ask for hot mustard before you leave - they don't give it as a default condiment. I gave Main House 4 stars because they look promising, despite the mixed-bag experience. We will be back to sample some of their other dishes to determine what else is good there. read more

We love this place. It's only takeout which is fine and close to home. When we first moved to the area, we traveled a bit for decent Chinese and then this place opened!! They have the best crab rangoon and beef teriyaki I've ever had. The wings are crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside (at first I thought they may have been overcooked but they fooled me; they were perfect). I also love their Moo Shu chicken. My husband likes their pad thai but it tastes nothing like any pad thai I've ever had (I don't like it here). Excellent General Gao. I love the fact they have a pupu platter for one. I ordered take out from this business a few weeks ago, and received terrible service. I happen to be a Transgender Woman, after ordering my food for take out, waiting for it, and then paying, the kid behind the counter, who looked like his working there would be in violation of child labor laws, intentionally misgendered me publically. Not wanting to engage in a teaching moment conversation with a minor on a Friday night after work, I simply nodded, as I left the restaurant, and went to my car. As I entered my car, I saw that the kid and one of the managers were simply staring out the restaurant window at me, looking at me like I was some sort of caricature, as they talked to each other about what they saw. Such service is not at all reflective of the kind of community that Groton is, and if this business doesn't get its act together in respecting all of its customers, let alone ensuring that children spend Friday nights at home with friends as opposed to working in sweatshop conditions, it really should be closed by the authorities. read more

Best Chinese food in the area. It's a small place, only 2 tables, best for takeout.My family has been going here since it opened, and we've never been disappointed with the food. Orders are filled in a timely manner and mistakes are extremely rare(items left out of order twice). Yes, the prices have been increasing, which is to be expected in this economy, but in this case you are getting what you pay for! Average Chinese food but twice out of the last three takeout experiences, they forgot to put an item from my order, in the bag. I had to drive all the way back to get it and there was no customer service on their end other than an apology. After the second time, I figured this was more of regular occurrence than a fluke and have taken my business elsewhere. UPDATE 10/5/15 The last two times we have ordered take out (out of convenience), they got the orders right. Still, this place is still at the bottom of our list for quality. The chicken wings and spring rolls are their best appetizers. You get a large helping of any of the house special chicken items (Gen. Gau, sesame chicken, orange flavor chicken) - but be aware the meat is chewy and not tender. The Thai offerings are not authentic but are the most flavorful on the menu. The thai red curry is actually just indian curry (think McCormicks curry seasoning). The rices are over cooked and heavily oiled, specially the refried rice which has no flavor but seems to have been refried an abundance of times. read more

Ok, this is a take-out Chinese food place, so my 4 star rating is comparing it to other take-out places. This place is surprisingly good for Chinese take-out! The Peking ravioli are scrumptious and their rice noodle dishes are very flavorful. The value meals truly are a great value (especially at lunch time) and perfect when you don't have a few people to share a meal with. My only complaint to date is the fact they always underestimate the number of fortune cookies to give! For example, our last order had enough food to serve three people two full meals each yet we were given only two fortune cookies. read more

Good news is that they get my orders right, they are ready when they promise, and prices are typical for the Townsend and Leominster direction rather than Westford and Chelmsford.
