Very disappointed. None of the entrees appealed to me, so I ordered the $13.50 hamburger, which came with fries. Had to pay $1 extra if I wanted cheese. Really? The burger came on a meh bun, and had zero flavor. It was literally just meat without seasoning. The fries were just okay. My companion ordered a pork dish which had grizzle. All in all, entrees that cost $25-$35 need to stand up to that price. $33 for normal sized scallops sitting on top of a puree is a zero. Waited for our food. No bread, no dinner salad. There are nicer places in Valpo or outlying areas that offer better food for the price. I do not forsee this place lasting with the few items they have in house which, incidentally, are not the same as the online menu. read more

I am really puzzled by the reviews here, some love it, some hate it- I am in the first group. We got there really late and were seated and taken care of without any rush. We remember our great server (Jennifer) from another restaurant and felt right at home. We started with grilled oysters which were done perfectly- just a hint added to the liquor from the shell to make a delectable, rich flavor. Zingerman's Road House in Ann Arbor, which makes a big deal out of oysters, doesn't do them this well. We had a Caesar salad which was very nicely done. Then we split a steak topped with Shiitake mushrooms and a sherry reduction that was really wonderful. The wine list is interesting and not overpriced, they have a number of beers on tap, the bar is well equipped and the cocktails were good. I give it four stars (not five) because I think they are just getting started. Some additions to the cocktail list, a rose on the wine list, and it gets a 5 - I am sure this will happen soon. read more

First time at this restaurant and I was very disappointed. Menu is very limited. Good thing we ordered a bottle of wine because we waited an hour for our food! Also, they do not serve anything such as bread or crackers while you are waiting. That would be a great improvement. I ordered the salmon which came undercooked and on top of about the smallest fingerling potato I have ever seen. The salmon was dry on the top - no butter or lemon and the green beans (about 3) and potato were cold. The waitress apologized for the kitchen's underwhelming performance and offered a free dessert. Sad to say the crème brulee was underwhelming as well! Sorry, but this will not be a repeat visit. read more

I don't know what it takes to run a kitchen, and tonight it seemed that neither did they. Food was not coming out of the kitchen in due time. It took about an hour for our two orders. It wasn't the fault of the wait staff (the two of them for about 50 seats). We were one of the first parties to arrive; however, the crowd did build suddenly. Yet, gradually over the hour after ordering, it seemed that the other diners were feeling the same, occasionally looking toward the open kitchen, bustling with activity but sending out nothing. We ordered the scallops served on top of squid-ink rice and the pork shoulder with salsa verde. The scallops were a tad salty, but the squid-ink rice was tasty. The pork shoulder was tender, but itself lacked seasoning. Luckily, the salsa picked up the slack. The pork came with steamed white rice with cilantro. It looked nice, but the occasional grain was under-cooked. It simply shouldn't happen. I recommend the grilled oysters. The lemon tart is just ok (close to the edge of too lemony), but I can recommend it. I suppose we could have enjoyed the whole experience if it weren't for the 1-hour wait between ordering and being served. Hard to say if we'll give them another shot. read more

Definitely an older crowd. Food and drinks are good here. The only place in town with a tuna tar tar as far as I know. There are definitely regulars in Main and Lincoln eveytime I'm in there. The regulars understandably get a little better service than the average Joe like me only in the once in a blue moon. Also, this doesn't take away from the food and drinks, but I've never seen anyone in there under the age of 40ish+. So, if you're in that age group this will likely be the place for you. read more

We had an excellent experience on a Monday night on our first trip to Main & Lincoln. We were heading to BW3's to grab a beer, but passed M&L and decided to try it. Monday's turned out to be half off drafts and bottles, and wow!, lots of options. We sat at the bar, where the bartender Chris was helpful and friendly. We had a great view of the kitchen where we watched the staff meticulously prepare a variety of dishes. It's obvious this place truly cares about the quality of their food, from presentation to taste. The burger was on special ($10 on Mondays) and was phenomenal. Cooked perfectly and full of flavor. I'm typically 'optimistically critical' of restaurants because I feel there's always room for improvement, but this placed nailed it. We've since been a few more times and consistently, the food, drinks, and service are top notch. You get what you pay for, and at M+L things can be pricey. Overall, it's a great place! * Unfortunately they no longer do the 1/2 price beers on Monday. :-( read more

Great fresh food, beautiful presentation, and wonderful service! You definitely get what you pay for - the ONLY place in town the food is priced proportionally to what you get, in terms of quality, dining experience, and beyond. This is one of my absolute favorite places in town to go to for dinner or to grab a drink. Held a dinner party here in December, and my family loved it. Staff was great and the back room was perfect for a small party. The menu is constantly rotating and delicious. You can just taste the freshness of the food and be blown away. Don't be intimidated by the names of the dishes, the staff is great at explaining things and everything is good. Being from NY, this is a place I think would easily stand tall among the other restaurants in The Big Apple. read more

There has not been one thing on the menu that I haven't liked yet. I'm not a big seafood eater, but a dinner mate ordered the scallops and they were extremely good. I highly recommend them if you like seafood. Otherwise, the pork dish is very good, nice and tender. The chocolate moose and the lemon tart are tied for best dessert. The wait staff was very friendly, and even servers that were not in charge of our table stopped by to see if we needed water, etc. Also, something you don't see much anymore, but the server took the order of all the women at the table before moving on to the guys. The decor is modern and comfortable - not always an easy combination to pull together. This place is a lot like many restaurants in Northwest Indiana. Inconsistent. Our server was genuinely enthused about offering up the selling points of the restaurant. However, he rarely checked up on the table, and not once were we offered refills. The raw oysters were phenomenal, and it's probably the only thing I'd come back for. The burger wasn't cooked to order and the chicken was practically one step away from being a salt lick. As for atmosphere, the building was very cold, and the acoustics made it feel like we were sitting in an auditorium. Everyone's voices carried. Perhaps, on a different day it would get 5 stars. Yikes. Brought my younger sister here for a birthday dinner only to have her witness a server being screamed at and cussed out (the f word was used!) by her manager in front of EVERYONE in the restaurant! The entire room heard it! Do the people in charge here not have enough self control to at least treat their employees like trash behind closed doors? It was so shocking to witness and reflected 100 times more poorly on the managerial staff than it did on the poor employee, whatever they may have done wrong. I am certain that everyone else in the room was extremely uncomfortable witnessing this event as well. I do not plan to come back to M+L for this reason. Train your employees to treat each other with respect and to manage their anger. So disturbing to watch. I'm informing my friends and family of this event as well because I'm sure they do not want to give to an establishment with this kind of environment. read more

My husband and I had a great experience. We ordered the tuna tartar which was AMAZING! It was on special that night, but I wish it was a regular menu item. I had a burger and my husband had a pasta dish. They were both very good, however, the meal was a bit on the pricey side. The service was fantastic, we had Courtney (I'm pretty sure that was her name, I'll have to go back to make sure) as our server and she was spot on with her recommendations. The whole staff was prompt at refilling water and removing used dishes. It was also very clean and I liked the modern decor. Wonderful little place! Decided to sit outside and have a glass of wine with some apps and entrees. Started with some oysters and onion rings. The rings were great and the oysters were very good, but the horseradish was fresh and just didn't give that punch. As far as main dinners are concerned, we each got fish that was cooked perfectly (halibut and salmon if I recall). Wonderful dishes. Service was great, too. The first time we ate here, the service was a bit slow and lacking in a lot of ways. It was not what we expected. The food was phenomenal. We went back today to give them another chance, and service was perfect with the most amazing food. We loved the Farfalle pasta (zucchini basil) and my husband ordered the Halibut which was replaced with scallops. The scallops were perfect and so fresh. The shrimp appetizer with tempura shitake was out of this world. We loved our perfect lemon tart that was great way to end our meal. Absolutely wonderful drinks and food. Front of house manager Melonie does a great job with service (we would go back because she 100% knows what she is doing). If you want really good food, this is the place to go. It also seems to take quite awhile to get your food, even when it doesn't seem to be crowded. What an amazing experience. Started off with sweet summer corn soup and a glass of Orin Swift Papillon Cabernet. My wife had the scallops in a cream risotto. They were perfectly cooked and the flavor with the cream risotto was incredible. I had the Berkshire pork chop which again was perfectly prepared and the chop itself was moist and flavorful. Finished with beignets accompanied with berries and cream. The owner has trained in Paris, New York, and Chicago to bring an amazing dining experience to Valpo. I am not from Valpo but decided to try this restaurant after reading other reviews. Have eaten in some pretty great restaurants and this is as good as it gets ! read more

You must go to this restaurant! It is sublime! I have been several times and been impressed each time. They serve the best. salmon. you. will. ever. experience. The tuna tartar is second only to the salmon but this time I got the steak which was also alarmingly good. Everything I have had has been expertly executed and they were very elegant about my gluten restriction. The waitress knew an impressive amount about the wine list too. My understanding is that the chef specializes in seafood and insists on organic greens which seems right. I had some lettuce and peas last night that were the best I have tasted that I can remember. I know that sounds odd and kind of overly simple to mention but I'm very serious. Extrapolate that to the whole menu. I thought salmon, steak, tuna, chicken, etc. would be what I've experienced in good american bistro-ish places before but with this place, it's the best version of all of those dishes I can remember having. Each meal has been memorable. I don't know what it is about this place that makes it so exceptional every single time and I don't care. The service and atmosphere was great, but the food was pretty bad. We had the scallops with risotto and pork belly confit. The scallops came in a soupy risotto and was very sweet. I thought the flavor was awful. The pork belly confit had no flavor and the gnocchi it came with was very overcooked. We barely ate anything. Went to Main + Lincoln for the first time last night and was blown away by the food. I had the salmon which is sushi grade and served medium rare. I had never had salmon served this way and was absolutely in love. Everything on the dish went so well together and the salmon itself was excellent. Their beer and wine selection is extensive as well. The main warning I would give, which other reviewers have as well, is that the food does take a while. BUT our server did tell us in the beginning that everything is made to order so knowing that up front, I was expecting to wait a bit. However, in my opinion, the food was worth the wait! read more

My husband wanted Steak for his birthday dinner but being a Monday Kelseys was closed. So, we drove down Lincolnway to see what was open and decided to try this place. We loved the quiet atmosphere, the soft lighting, the windows, décor and our server. He ordered the Steak with some sauce and mushrooms and I had the burger and fries. I have to say that was the biggest and best burger and fries I've had in Valparaiso, maybe anywhere and he absolutely loved his steak. We also had a total of 3 beers, 2 shots, and one dessert and our bill was only $88 (before tip). Not bad for everything being perfect and delicious. It's a smaller menu which i like. The burger and beer is $10 every Monday. You can't go wrong with that. I'll be going back for sure. read more

The salmon with Israeli couscous was outstanding! I've never tried anything like that before and I'm a big fan now. The flavors, texture, creaminess couldn't be more perfect. Steak with mashed potatoes and marinated mushrooms are very tasty as well. I didn't think that I'd even like marinated mushrooms on my steak but all of the flavors blend together to create very tasty and original dish. Desserts aren't any less impressive. Orange granita tasted amazing! Lemon tart was very balanced - perfectly lemony creamy and not overly too sweet with tasty crust. The chef certainly knows what he is doing. My wife and I dined at Main and Lincoln last evening based on reccomendations from a friend. Great atmosphere and electric vibe to the dining room. Food was uninspiring to say the least. Ordered the Winter Squash and Fuji Apple soup, had no flavor of squash or tart apple. I ordered the scallops based on the recommendations on Yelp. The scallops were caramelized beautifully, but the whole plate was stone cold. The plate had no enoki mushrooms as stated on the menu and the carrot puree was tasteless. The server took the soup back told me that I was the only one ever had an issue with the soup as it's very popular. He told me the chef/owner was classically trained in Paris at the Cordon Bleu School of Culinary Arts, apparently they don't use a thermometer or know how to serve a warm plate. My wife had the Rib Eye and it was OK, but lacked seasoning. Overall the plate cost was expensive for the quality of the food. If you're looking in the Valpo area, Bon Femme, Pikk's or Dish are much better choices with more finesse in their delivery. I'm really not all that fussy, but the service and food quality were lackluster at best. read more
