We like the music and salads. Drinks are good. Entrees are limited if one does not eat cow and pig. Salmon is cheap farm-raised Faroe Island import, which is ethically a no go since those people butcher porpoises and pilot whales by the thousands every year in a blood lust festival. The wholesale delivery service does have wild-caught salmon for a minimal increase in cost. Like most of the wait staff in Valparaiso, attention (eye contact) is cursory and superficial, which shows that the customers are to be sold but not really appreciated as their sole income source. Eg: Dirty fork with dirty dishes between courses: "Do you want to keep that fork?" We realize that it is Indiana, but take a ride over to Gambas for some service training. I really wanted to love this place! The food was great, but the service was absolutely terrible. Our server never came back to refill our water, check on our food, or even bring the check. We had fries with no ketchup, ribs with no BBQ sauce or napkins, and empty cups with no refills. The server walked past our table multiple times and completely avoided eye contact. He didn't know the drink menu and went out of his way to ignore us, to the point where we honestly couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculous it was. He definitely needs more training. Popped into Nextdoor at Birdie's for a cheeky drink a few minutes after they opened at 4 p.m. I was the only one there! It was nice to have such a nice little bar-slash-lounge to myself. The place is pleasantly dim inside, and classy but casual. The bartender was friendly and efficient and didn't chat a whole lot, which I appreciated. I just wanted a glass of red wine, and I found that here. They have a whole page of their menu dedicated to wine. They also have cocktails and beer and things, but that wasn't on my radar. I didn't try any of the food, but they do have some. The thing about this place is that it's good for families and also for couples wanting an intimate night out, and also a lady by herself wanting a drink at the bar. It's all encompassing! read more

Very good. A little dark for my liking. That could be old age speaking. They were great for the child we had with us. A very smart six year old boy. The service was super sweet. We were able to catch up comfortably. My Chica had taken me out for my birthday and it was really a great time. I ordered the Rueben and it was delicious. The fries also so good. Very disappointed to see the quality of food they serve for the price. The grits were white mush, the chicken wrap was store bought wrap with unflavored rotisserie chicken and cauliflower steak wasn't even browned enough and tasted awful! I don't think I will recommend this place to anyone. The fries were too skinny and dried up with loaded salt . I love the atmosphere of this restaurant. We stopped in on a chilly winter night and I immediately felt cozy. Great date vibes. Our service was friendly if a bit slow. I wanted to love the food but I didn't quite. The voodoo tots were really good but a bit heavy on the onions making that the overwhelming flavor. It was a good flavor though so I didn't mind too much. I got the meatloaf. It was pretty good. The mashed potatoes were dying for some salt and some richness though. And I swapped the asparagus for some roasted carrots. They were definitely burnt, and tasted bitter. I would go again and try some other dishes though. And the cocktails, mocktails, and desserts sounded great, but we were too full to try them. read more

So this is the place to go for a quiet relaxed evening in a speak easy type bar. Low lighting, soft music, comfortable seating, with good food and drinks. Best bartenders in town. Fantastic place! Was waiting on friends and had couple hours to wait, kind of felt weird going in by myself but was hungry. Alone or with a group, the staff and bartender makes you feel very welcome! Honest in their recommendations, much appreciated! I didn't want to leave even when friends were ready. And the food was great, the burger is wonderful, and the steak frittes is too, I am guessing its nkt diet food though. Great place, welcoming to everyone, I will be back! read more

The food here is great, drinks even better. The ambiance with dim lighting, cozy vibes, and music is what I want from a nice dinner out. I also love that they are open on Sundays. The service we've gotten from our bartenders or wait staff is always great but is sometimes slow. The staff don't seem to have support staff to help them if they are busy. At other restaurants I often see a manager just come by to check on guests or pitch in where needed. They don't have this here- or if they do that person stays in the back and never helps. I have seen someone once or twice but they are rarely out front and never seen lending a hand where needed. I wouldn't recommend the service when it's busy unless you are ok with a wait. The staff need management support and they don't seem to get it. read more

We wanted to love this place. Came highly recommended. Not a great experience. Came on a weeknight. Seated in a booth right when you walked in. Super cute place. Retro style, newly renovated. The server was so fake nice it was off putting. We got the voodoo tots. Not that great. Sounded amazing at the description. My husband got the catfish & truffle fries. The catfish fell apart & tasted like it had been frozen too long. No substance to it. He only ate a little bit. I tried it & agreed. The truffle fries tasted like garlic powder or garlic salt. I got the salad that was on special. Flavors that didn't go together. I love a weird, good salad, but this was like a generic garden salad then, fruit thrown in with tomatoes & cucumbers. Barely ate it. Service lacked. I never got my water refilled, had to go up to the bar & ask the bartender. The manager took half of my husband's food off, seemed annoyed with us when I told her about my salad. I didn't want a discount, just improvement. Not sure if we will try again since they missed so many marks. read more

We came here late night about an hour and half before closing. We got the mushroom appetizer that came out pretty quick, it was okay. Our drinks took longer to come out than the appetizer and the guinness was not poured correctly. How is a guinness more expensive than a mixed drink? The main course took FOREVER and our waiter just ignored it and gave us no updates and then it finally came out and he said thanks for being patient. Well we had no choice. We ordered the catfish & beef short rib. The fish was overcooked & the breading was super thick. The short rib was good. Then we waited for the check, almost walked out it took so long, probably sat for over15 minutes just waiting to spot the waiter. He was nowhere to be found & bartender cleaning up. Way too much money for us to be treated like our time meant nothing. Should have gone to white castle instead. read more

First, my Wife and I were big fans of Dish so when Nextdoor at Birdies opened we were anxious to try it hoping that the Dish experience would be somewhat re-created. To some extent it is but in many it has not. There are a few Dish items on the menu. Yes, the Gorgonzola potato chips and the Sesame Chicken along with a few other appetizers are here, but this is not Dish. First the ambiance. The furnishings are modern with cut away booths along one wall across from the bar. The bar itself is huge, seating around 20. There are a number of beer taps on the back bar. The room is basically brick wall and a faux copper style ceiling. The noise level is loud. We were there on a Tuesday evening and by 5:30/6:00 the bar was crowded. Don't know if they were meeting for dinner or this was the afterwork meeting place. It would make a great afterwork meeting place. We were met at the reception stand and seated immediately. Our booth was the first booth in the row and unfortunately whenever someone came into the restaurant the wind would come in and bounce off the wall and into our face. Since it was 25 degrees out we resorted to eating with coats on. Our waitress was pleasant and informative. Second, the menu. There are a number of interesting items on the menu that we will explore on subsequent visits. For example, I am interested in the "Deconstructed Wellington". Since neither of us were that hungry we ordered sandwiches. My wife ordered the "Juicy Lucy" and I the Pork Tenderloin. The Juicy Lucy is billed as a hamburger with pimento cheese. According to my wife the pimento cheese was very scant. If you are looking for an Indiana Pork Tenderloin you will be disappointed. The tenderloin is a roasted tenderloin served on a brioche. It is really quite good. There are a number of beers and cocktails on the drink menu but my wife and I are into wine. The wine menu is adequate in that you will probably find something but it is limited. All in all Nextdoor at Birdie's is worth a visit. read more

Stopped in for cocktails and snacks to celebrate a friend's birthday. From the moment we stepped in the door, Alexis, the bartender, and Tracy, the manager, made us feel like VIP guests.
