Though we've currently got 45 MPH winds outside with blowing sleet and snow, and Erie, PA's slated to get 10-14 inches of snow, I ventured out with another medical student and our attending to grab some lunch at this wonderfully quaint, cozy, and more importantly, warm cafe. Coming from the metropolitan NYC area, many would call me a food snob because I don't often like the foods I come across in Erie, but believe it or not, I actually liked this place. It's half take-out bakery with some incredible looking muffins, pies, and cookies (I intend to come back here again to try some of these out) and half eat-in restaurant where the prices aren't going to break the bank. I started my lunch with a nice cup of hot chocolate, and boy was it delicious. It was neither watered down nor too rich - in fact, it was really quite perfect. I also ordered a vegetarian specialty sandwich ($4.99!) that was comprised of a grilled portobello mushroom, lettuce, tomato, onion, a slice of pepperjack cheese, and some spicy mayo all on a seasoned whole wheat roll (though they also offered plain and herb/cheese - both with seasoning of its own baked into its top). It might have been the best sandwich I've ever ordered in Erie. The bread was the perfect consistency and that seasoning was something else! I'm almost certain they bake the bread on site which makes it even better. The fries were all right (+$1.99 if ordered with a sandwich) - not the best I've ever had but definitely tastier than a fast food joint. My main gripes about the place are that 1) service can take a bit longer than most other places and 2) you'll walk out smelling like a greasy french fry. However, I'm so glad I found myself here despite the crazy snow storm. I can't wait to return when roads are safer to drive on! UPDATE: I finally returned and picked up some awesome cookies (half dozen for $5)! My favorite was the Heath bar cookies since they were impeccably soft, but you really should try their peanut butter and Rolo cookies too! I even got an Irish Car Bomb cupcake (Guinness in the cake batter, Jameson-infused filling, and Bailey's in the icing) to try at home. And on my way out, I saw some of the most irresistible pies in their fridge including Chocolate Mousse and Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie! Looks like I'm returning sometime soon! read more

I want to like this place. The food is ok, but the service and the general operations need some improvements. Each time I've been there I repeatedly need to ask the wait staff to bring the silverware, splenda, etc. they don't set the tables or keep anything on them that you normally find on them in most restaurants. In general, the wait staff is inexperienced and unprofessional and do not add to the experience. Each time we've been there, they are taking their dinner/lunch breaks at the counter and are somewhat disruptive to other diners. This place is small, so there probably isn't an option for them to eat elsewhere as was required during my years of experience, but it definitely takes away from the experience since the wait staff is mostly teenaged/young adult. We feel the overall experience is just as important as the food, so when we walk out of the restaurant remembering the lackluster service and other misses from what would have otherwise been a passable meal, it just might not be worth going back. We believe in supporting the local places and will try it again, but some changes need to be made to keep us coming back. read more

The service here was wonderful, everyone was happy and the food came out quickly, despite it being very busy. I went there for breakfast and just got a simple sandwhich. My brother got the country fried breakfast and that was so good. Went back for lunch the next day, and got burgers and fries. Fries are fresh cut and amazing. The burgers are damn good too. Good breakfast stop just a short hop from the highway. Split biscuit with eggs, sausage gravy and cheese was delicious. Home fries were tasty little nuggests of potato with just a touch of crispness. I wasn't too impressed. The best thing about this place is perhaps the atmosphere. It's clean and bright with cute decorative phrases on the wall. I ordered the breakfast sandwich. They only had a plain bagel as the bagel option and it came with a square piece of cheap processed American cheese. I mainly went there to use the coupon for the buy one get one free cinnamon roll; which was incredibly underwhelming. It was moist and they warmed it up, but it wasn't anything special, had no icing or frosting. Service was par. The waitress was busy and gave me attitude when I requested the cinnamon roll instead of the sticky bun due to a nut allergy. I am not eager to return. read more

There is a bakery at the front entrance so you can grab baked goods for the road. This restaurant is worth getting off the 90 for a quick bite to eat. We really enjoyed our evening spent here. From the food to the server to the overall experience, it was pleasant from start to finish. It was very nicely decorated, clean, bright, with a comfy ambiance. Our waiter was friendly, engaging and courteous, not just to us, but everyone else he interacted with while we were there. Our food was served promptly, hot, and was delicious. My hot turkey sandwich was just the right size, a side of homemade mashed potatoes and a nice gravy, with a side vegetable made my meal complete. The soups sounded good, but I did not order any as I saved room for dessert. There were some many choices for desserts. I chose a chocolate cake that was divine. We were traveling on I-90 and wanted to stop for lunch. Thanks to Yelp we found this little gem of a restaurant in Fairview. We walked in at exactly noon. I was a little nervous we might have to wait, but we lucked out and found a table (seat yourself) in the far dining room (of two that are connected). The place was clean and bright. Within maybe a minute or two of us sitting down, Kelly came to our table to get started taking our orders etc. She was great! She took really good care of us. She noticed our table was wobbly and fixed it on the spot. She brought us some iced tea. (We got unsweetened tea, but they had sweet as well, along with some flavored teas.) We asked Kelly for her opinion on some of the menu items, then went with the cranberry pecan salad that she recommended, along with a chicken salad / fruit plate that was on the special menu. The food came after a normal wait. The cranberry pecan salad was really good. The kitchen was generous with the "goodies" (pecans, dried cranberries, and feta cheese crumbles) along with the lettuce and the chicken. The dressing (concord grapeseed vinaigrette) was a little different, but we both liked it. The chicken salad was good, too, although maybe a bit heavy on the mayo/dressing. It came with a small croissant. I don't think the croissant was made in-house, but it worked just fine to offset the creamy chicken salad. The fruit salad was a generous portion of fresh watermelon, cantaloupe, and grapes. Since we were good and got salads for lunch - and because the bakery case was right next to where you pay on the way out - we got some cookies and coffee to take with to enjoy on the next leg of our trip. Both were fresh and tasty. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Main Street Cakery Cafe and hope to return soon. read more

Great salad selection with the option of ordering extras of anything you want, cheese, bacon, eggs etc. Fast paced cafe style dining that does a lot of take out. Huge menu and loyal clientele. Went there twice, first for the pot roast dinner (Tuesday night special) and a few days later for breakfast (standard fare). Pot roast dinner was very good $8.95 and very filling with baby carrots and mashed potatoes as sides. After passing the pastry case on the way in, we had to try the monkey bread. ooey, gooey goodness abounds from every bite! Also tried a loaf of their white bread and wheat bread- both very good as well. The white is a little on the sweet side, more like " cake bread." It is great toasted and would make tasty french toast. They don't have a bread slicer, so be prepared to wait a few minutes because they slice it by hand. Also tried some of their cookies, peanut butter were the best, oatmeal and heathbar were a little disappointing...kind of dry and hard to chew. We noticed that they also had a drive thru window. We found this place while traveling through on our way to Niagara Falls. The owner had a private party coming in soon, but offered to seat us quickly and make sure that we had time to eat. Our 12-year-old son loved the enormous portion of mac & cheese with barbecue boneless wings! They were a hit with the entire table. We each had something different, and were all impressed with what we ordered. The owner also brought us a bag of fresh baked cookies at the end of our meal. When I got my new one I was given 2 chocolate chip cookies. The best chocolate chip cookies I've ever had in my life and that says a lot because I have people in my family that awesome recipes. One of the best local mom-and-pop restaurants in Fairview. All the dishes are homemade prepared from scratch. Their soups are an excellent quality and taste. Well I gave the Cakery a second try a couple days ago but unfortunately I won't be back. The first time I tried it, I was given a burnt sandwich for lunch after a 30 minute wait. The woman I was having lunch with also had a sandwich. It was a long wait for a couple sandwiches. However the waitress was nice and we left a good tip. The second time I was there with another woman for lunch and she went inside to ask to be seated. They told her there was no indoor seating available so she said outside was fine. Then a group of 4 came in right after and he seated them ahead of her INDOORS! She and I both agreed that is really bad service We then were seated outdoors and waited 40 MINUTES for a salad and sandwich. The food was decent that time, but it just wasn't worth the wait. A duo who was sitting outside with us was waiting 30 minutes as well and had to take ask that their order be changed to "to go" because their lunch break was over. Again though, the waitress was very nice and apologetic and we left good tips. 8 read more
