This hole in the wall in Valatie sits directly on a creek and Main Street. It needs a better sign as the entrance is a nondescript multi level building, with an awning. Inside there is a dining area that wraps around bathrooms. On the counters, staff left their empty gum wrappers, staff drink coolers, dirty rags, half eaten sandwiches, empty bottles, refilled Tostitos jars with stinky substances, papers, and cloths etc. At the counter there was a long wait. Regular visitors brought their own food. Several of the service vitrines were cracked. The glass + tableware racks that busboys brought, were very dirty (see pictures, replace them). My meatloaf sandwich - which is a staple that I usually opt for, when there are many items, was filled with carrot and greens; which left a weird taste, that was not meatloafy on my palette! The sides were good, the coffee as well: but the coffee was always empty. The food is middle of the road. Service is slow and lacks a single 'leader' who can keep business humming along. People waited to pay. Cash was left unpaid on the register - people just gave up and walked out. It is very very chaotic. Food is passable, not refined. Coffee refills took a very long time. We've been to Main Street Diner at least a dozen times now. While I've tried working my way through their menu, there's still a lot I want to try. Salads are huge. Burgers are good. Onion rings, great. You can't beat their prices on breakfast and their typically large servings. One thing was pretty average is their breakfast gravy. This is a great little Eatery in Valatie. Their Breakfasts are excellent and the prices are super reasonable. Portions are generous. Service is prompt, efficient, friendly, accommodating and consistent. I love that they open at 6:00 AM too. Most breakfast places don't open until 7:00 A.M. or later. It's great to get out early in the morning during the long days of summer and dine on a little high quality breakfast sustenance that is enjoyable and reasonable. Yesterday I had the Blueberry Pancakes, a side of Scrambled Eggs, a large Orange Juice and Ice Water with Lemon. The Blueberry Pancakes were delicious! Even the Short Stack portion was huge. I wouldn't personally go for the entrees, but if you're looking for a gooey tuna melt or a nice salty, cheesy bowl of French onion soup, the Main Street Diner will deliver the goods for dirt cheap. The gigantic Aegean salad is also pretty tasty (if you're not upset by iceberg in your salad) and enough food to feed a family of four. Even by diner standards this place doesn't really have an atmosphere to speak of, but the chilly institutional vibes are mostly counteracted by the waitress who addresses everyone as "my love" and knows her regulars by name. Not a place to bring your friend who demands hourly infusions of oat milk lattes, but definitely a small-town institution that will serve your cheap diner coffee with a smile every time. read more

Many of the dishes are way too spicy, especially the soups. I threw away the green pea soup because it was inedible. Since most of the customers are seniors it's strange that they would not provide a less spicy cuisine. I stick with the eggs and the potatoes to play it safe. I had breakfast there about 5 years ago and was very happy with it, so my husband and I were looking forward to trying it again. Unfortunately, this breakfast wasn't as enjoyable. The service was excellent and our food came out quickly enough, but it wasn't very enjoyable. We both had omelettes, and they - and the hash browns - were quite bland, and had an "off" taste. I thought it was due to a lack of seasoning (and the mushrooms in my omelette tasted canned), but after adding salt and pepper and taking a few more bites, I can say that it almost tasted as though the flat top hadn't been cleaned well, or some of the cleaning solution hadn't been rinsed off (I'm a retired breakfast chef).
