Love the setting of this place. Very comfy. Prices are affordable. Have different food that I like Hawaiian and pho. The pho hands down top 5 in Ventura county . Tried the Kalua pig unique flavor. Tried mai sate pho that was good wish the portions were bigger. People are friendly. They also have frog legs which I tried they were great,expensive but great. Different types of drink and sweets. My husband and I love Mai's Cafe. There are delicious vegetarian and vegan options (and they recently expanded these options). My favorite is the veggie pho (with tofu & veggie ham)! Worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant... EVER. Tried this place for the first time to have dinner and while I was eating, the employees thought it was a good time to start mopping the floors and spraying tables. All I could smell and taste was the cleaning supplies. It was disgusting. This was around 7:30 PM and this place is set to close at 9:30 PM. Stay away from this place unless you like your food to taste like cleaning supplies or if you like terrible service. Couldn't they have just waited until the restaurant was closed to do that? That is so incredibly rude and inconsiderate. I should have just left at that moment but didn't know what to think at the time all this happened. So disappointed. Never coming here again. On a chilly night, with my significant other feeling under the weather we decided to stop in Mai's for some hot pho. I have driven past this restaurant many times and when my boyfriend mentioned he wanted Pho, I pictured their restaurant because i've always wanted to try it! I had never had Pho before coming to Mai's so I wasn't sure what to expect. We ordered the sampler platter with 2 eggrolls, pot stickers/dumplings, fried shrimp, and spring rolls (Rice paper with beef and shrimp.) Everything was very good especially with the peanut sauce and semi spicy red chili type sauce that it came with. The server recommended the Guava drink which was delicious! It is very fresh so be careful of the seeds (They are very hard.) For dinner we both ordered the "Chicken Pho Gho" which was very tasty and had a ton of chicken! I will definitely go back for the Pho! Their lights can use some dusting... Another pet peeve of mine--The server was wearing sandals. Best pho in CA. I order it to-go at least twice a week and wish I could have it every day! The broth is real bone broth! - Very nutrient rich. Has the best flavor and colour. Toppings include thai basil, cilantro, sprouts, green onion, jalapeño and lime. Delicious homemade spicy garlic sauce for those who like some heat. The staff is always welcoming and sweet. I love this place! This is my second home - I usually come in once or twice a week. Jennifer is the cutest little lady, and always engages in conversation with me. I always get the same thing special beef pho and the consistency of how good it is, is always on point. This is the first place I have ever tried pho at and I have eaten pho at a few other places but it just doesn't compare to this one. I have also tried the chicken and veggie fried rice and chow mein both delicious. Occasionally I get the spring rolls without mint and they are great also. See you soon Mai's! read more

I would have taken a photo of everything but it was too good and we ate it! I got the special pho - absolutely awesome. My husband got this Vietnamese beef stew which he loved. Our appetizer was like a combination with potstickers, tempura shrimp and spring rolls. My husband says they were the best spring rolls he'd ever had. The service was perfect, our server was knowledgeable, friendly and fast. And did I mention my pho was phonomenal? Hahaha, get it, see what it did there?! My Wife (who is Vietnamese and picky with her pho) and I love the pho at Mai's. The soup has so much flavor while not being overly salty. We both get it with their proprietary spicy paste (available to go and goes great on eggs/chicken!). They are also very flexible with customizing the Pho to your taste. Ex: my Wife subs out noodles for veggies and I get extra meat (so worth it!). So happy to have found Mai's which is so close to where we work in Ventura. read more

The food was good. But this review isn't about the food... I went in tonight with my parents who I am visiting from out of town and my baby. We were enjoying our Pho when another waitress besides our own came up to me with some papers in hand. She had the nerve to ask me if I have heard of essential oils and I said yeah my friends sell them. Oh well you should use it for your acne. UMMM WHAT???? Sorry I neglected to put on makeup before having dinner in front of your ignorant ass. So rude and disrespectful. Yes my skin is not the greatest at the moment. But having a baby tends to do that to some. Way to point out something I'm dealing with and having a hard time with. Not trying to write a book here , but I feel so appalled by the rude and ignorant comment to me. Totally lost my appetite after that and she ruined my night. Trying to pedal your little business is one thing (which seems very out of place in a restaurant in my opinion) but to point out other people's flaws is different. I didn't say anything to you about the noticeable birth mark on your face did I ? No. Because that is something called common courtesy and respect. You don't go around pointing out the things that are wrong with people. You are supposed to bring people up. Phew. Thanks for letting me vent. When Mai's was near Five Points, I could forgive the wacky service and general cluelessness because I loved the Tiki Bar atmosphere and it was cozy and fun. Now, in the new, more traditional-feeling restaurant space, the service errors and the uninspired food combine to give me no reason to return. I'd rather drive over to Pho Oxnard for Vietnamese food than to put up with being treated badly. I don't know what their problem is, but they seem to go through a lot of servers, most of whom act like they are unfamiliar with the menu and who aren't particularly keen to learn. When we asked one about what kind of beer they had, she wrinkled her nose and said "I don't drink beer. But we have some in bottles." Well, thank you for that piece of wisdom. Not exactly what I wanted to know. In addition, they have items on the menu that they NEVER seem to have, which is kind of annoying. They used to have excellent vegetarian Banh Mi, but then it turned into just fried tofu on a bun. read more

This used to be my favorite place for Vietnamese food. I have eaten here many times. A couple of months ago I had lunch here with a friend, and we both ended up with diarrhea that afternoon. It was not severe, and for some reason I totally forgot about that experience and came back about 3 weeks ago with my son and his girlfriend. I ended up with the worst food poisoning I have ever experienced. I was so sick with a fever and diarrhea that I was off work for a week, and then it took me another week to get my strength back. Completely pedestrian food, and the drinks weren't anything to write home about. Tried the special pho (broth was meh, meat was springy and flavorless) and the Thai tea or whatever that was called (there's plenty of better places for this in downtown Ventura) and it all was the definition of below average. The waitress seemed nice enough (even if they never felt the need to refill a water that I'd finished a quarter of the way thru the meal) but some employee was pointing to their wrist insinuating we needed to leave when they still had multiple parties in there with food on the table and we had paid our bill... Really odd behavior. Oh, and the pot stickers appetizer was completely bland. But. I guess you can't go wrong at the price point? I'd never return, nor recommend it to anyone. I was thoroughly disappointed in the menu. It was very small and non interesting and including no fusion foods. Very common foods you could get at your local L&L Hawaiian BBQ. I ordered pho and was not impressed at all. Bland broth and tough meat. So to go from a boring menu to bad food, one of the ladies tried to literally rush us out! She came to our table slapped our table and motioned for us to hurry up! Unbelievable and this was like 15-20minutes before their SCHEDULED 9:30pm closing time & we were about half way through our meal. And to top our meal of, as we were walking about we heard a dog bark from the kitchen. I am 100% serious! Mai's Cafe in Ventura California is definitely a hidden gem! The owner, originally from Hawaii cooks some of the meanest Loco Moco & Pork Lau Lau I have ever had and he runs his business true to the "aloha spirit" of hospitality. They have a small tiki bar there as well where the bartender (Sarah Pugh, love you girl!) serves em up stiff while always engaging you in hilarious conversation. FYI, there is a stripper pole oddly enough behind the bar and if your game to actually jump on it for a whirl while they play IZ's version of "over the rainbow" feel free!
