We liked it so much, we dined there twice! Right around the corner from our hotel, we popped in here twice over the course of the weekend. There wasn't an abundance of options for breakfast in the area (in the earlier-than-brunch-usually-starts hours), one place was closed for vacation and the rest were a bit too far to drag our hungry 3-year olds to. I don't always love counter service but they are efficient here and I didn't mind. Between our two meals we tried: French toast, omelets, waffles and the egg/avocado/vegetable dish. Everything was pretty good! My favorite was the smoked salmon omelet. The first visit we had cold brew which was excellent, the second day they were out so we went with regular iced coffee. I wasn't a fan but it's likely I'm just not a fan of the coffee they use (Counter Culture). Did I mention the place is cute inside too? I'd definitely visit again if we are ever in the area. read more

This place is in the heart of New Haven along with the Yale shopping center, you'd think it'll be a great spot for all different walks of life. It is simply not. Strolled pass this place a couple times even tried some of their espresso drinks & it was decent but not worth the absurd prices. The few times I came there were long lines & there weren't any black/brown/Asian workers just all white. I mean the customers that come to this spot are indeed white, but it is a shame that this spot isn't as diverse as the places like the Shake Shack or Five Guys. Terrible. Do better! read more

Would have been better if the barista hadn't been ANGRILY yelling out orders like she was furious with everyone in the place. So rude. Made what would have been a pleasant break a miserable one, waiting for her to yell again. Unbelievably obnoxious. People were visibly annoyed. So my husband and I decided to start the day with a simple, tasty but inexpensive breakfast. Well we were in for something just the opposite. The decor is very nice and the space is large. There is a fair variety of food and drink options. The food was tasty but the cost for why we received did not balance. I ordered a spinach omelette, green power juice and my husband ordered an omelette with cheese, a Lazarus smoothie and our son had a waffle. All of that for $46.00. Mind you we had to go up to the counter to order our the food, pick it up and then clear our own dishes. Did you happen to notice I did not mention any meat on our plates and when we asked for syrup for our sons waffle the young lady at the counter said that's extra! In New Haven for how many years, and I didn't even know this place existed! Macarons, DELICIOUS breakfast sandwiches, Belgian waffles....It's fantastic. I had the avocado and horseradish egg sandwich, and it's on the crunchiest, most delicious bread, and comes with a small side salad. I tried to pace myself, but it was so freaking delicious that I couldn't. My friend had a Belgian waffle with strawberries and chocolate, and she couldn't finish hers either. It was Instagram-perfect looking, decadent, and easily the best I've tried in a while. It's not cheap, necessarily, and parking is terrible - it's downtown New Haven, after all. But if you can find a spot and walk, I highly recommend it. Sit down, enjoy the ambiance of a Euro cafe in the middle of CT, and eat till your heart's content. read more

The start of every relationship necessitates real communication, which is why Maison Mathis' radio silence in the days before its "soft opening" two weeks ago troubled me. It was definitely playing hard to get--employing the kind-of-clever, mostly confusing slogan "Come on in, we're not open" to entice sidewalkers, its staff milling about its pristine and beautiful white-washed interiors, undoubtedly baking up magic in the back. My friend and I stopped by no less than three times only to find the door locked, the much-touted opening pushed back and back again and then.... WE WERE IN! The limited menu and lack of hot items like soup, breakfast sandwiches, and belgian waffles aside, Maison Mathis and its wide, polished counters would please any Europhile or warehouse-coffeeshop-enthusiast. Its set-up--exposed pipes, wooden workman tabletops, and a few booth-like seats at the edges--reeked of a hybrid Belgian-Seattle cool, and I wasn't complaining. I ordered a sourdough round, a cold and rather hard $5 loaf that was neither sour nor that round. It felt kind of like a bakery reject and tasted like it'd been left out for a few hours, which, judging from the way the staff pulled it from the exposed rack behind the counter, was probably true. Judging from MM's Facebook and web presence, their marketing lies in a series of high-gloss, high-MP photos of sandwiches and breads. But in reality, they should probably prepare sandwiches fresh-to-go and pull breads out of the back-kitchen, if only to give me the illusion that things just came out of the oven or off the griddle. When we went, the sandwiches were stacked a half-dozen one top of one another, lumped by type and with no offer from the staff for a re-heating or modification. My friend had a chicken-pesto sandwich, which was cold and lacking something. The whole time I thought, "I could make this at home for a fraction of the price." But the dessert, a caramel-dark chocolate tart drizzled with almond slices, cloyingly stole the show. 11am is probably too early for such indulgences, but we'd been waiting for the occasion for weeks (I wish I were lying, but as an undergraduate living a block away and forced to pass the floor-to-ceiling windows of this place every day, twice a day on my way to class...this was one big crush that had I had to pursue); the tart was phenomenal. Easily splittable. I was a little turned off by the paper plates they served us everything on, but I think they're operating at full-supplies now and plate their pretty food. So, some suggestions for this pretty franchise (the other location is opening in Dubai!): 1. Take advantage of social media! Foodies and students all over New Haven are watching. Take a cue from Claire's Corner Copia or Katalina's Kupcakes, both of which have leveraged social media for booming sales and customer loyalty. Now's the time to share pictures of the food, staff bios, etc. This is supposed to be a neighborhood eatery after all...and the gorgeous interior is too perfect for first dates, business meetings, and solitary reading-with-a-latte afternoons. Pictures of this place should be tweeted the world over...so why the radio silence? 2. Rotate specials with meaning. There's a huge cultural component to his place--a website emphasis on the Belgian tradition--and it would be worthwhile to headline an item a week, with more information on its cultural roots and preparation. Some ideas that come to mind are the ubiquitous Belgian waffle, or one of their mile-high breakfast sandwiches. The former seems more, well, Belgian, to me, but why are both on the menu? As a high-end, European Panera of sorts, MM needs to give me reasons to come back and thrust over my student earnings. And I'm willing to pay for a little culinary exoticism or rustica now and then. 3. Train staff on proper greeting etiquette. The girls that served me were flustered and distracted, and people were literally walking in, awkwardly wobbling around the cafe without being greeted, and eventually walked out. That's a terrible sight during a "soft opening." So, all in all, the food has potential and I'm giving an extra star for the stunning layout and ideal location on Elm, right across from the Broadway shopping strip. This place could really change the landscape of student/resident food conversation, but they need to step up their game. I'll chalk the mediocre experience up to grand-opening blips, but this is a relationship worth pursuing, and if MM is willing to give me some unique effort, I'll become an infatuated regular for sure. read more

First, some pros: the layout of the cafe is really nice, with lots of marble, wide open spaces, and a cool black/white color scheme that gives the interior a chic high-end feel. I think I would enjoy hanging out here to work or relax on a nice day. That being said, I found the waffles rather underwhelming when I visited. Although I didn't try any of their other menu items, the waffle that I had was undercooked, rather small for the price and I even found a hair in it after taking a couple of bites! I've also tried some of their tarts, and although they were better than the waffles, there was nothing to write home about afterward. Overall, this is a welcome addition to the Broadway scene, but it isn't an exemplary restaurant by any means. I have noticed an increase in food quality and a decrease in prices since this place first opened, however. I hope that the upward trend continues, and I will be happy to give this place more stars as it matures! read more

This is a great coffee spot/cafe to grab a drink, snack, and settle in to do some work. There's tons of table space so you don't have to worry about finding a seat. The atmosphere is definitely not as cozy as other coffee spots, but it's light, open, and modern-vibe are good for an early afternoon coffee. And the huge windows make it a bright place to do some reading and people watching. The coffee was delicious and they have tons of options to choose from (including soy or almond milk). The lunch menu was quite pricey for a cafe, so I went for a small snack instead. The vegan chocolate bread definitely hit the spot! Also, the sandwiches and breads are 50% off after 7PM. So be sure to ask about that if you're in for a late night snack! Overall, an ideal place to settle in and do some work. It's definitely more on the pricey side for a coffee shop, but worth it if you want to treat yourself to a nice working lunch. read more

I came to New Haven with my 11 year old daughter, for Yale Children's Hospital. We waited together in the ER for four days until a bed opened up. The morning after her admission, I went to get breakfast while waiting for an initial call from her doctors. I searched online for the best breakfast at Yale, and Maison Matthis came up, so I drove there, and took an open parking spot, directly in front of the restaurant. The parking meter was covered in a white pouch that said New Haven on it. I did not have to feed the meter. There were no time restrictions posted on the spot. I went inside and ordered coffee with almond milk, a chorizo omelette, and a jelly donut. I paid at the counter. They gave me a table near the door, placed an order number sign on the table along with my coffee, and invited me to sit while they prepared my breakfast. While waiting for my food, I got a call, with three doctors on the line. I would only have a few precious minutes of their time, and I couldn't hear over the noise in the restaurant, so I hurriedly left my coffee on the table, and I went outside and got into my car where it was quiet. I fumbled for a pen and paper, and started conversing with the doctors about my daughter's condition and treatment. Suddenly, a woman started banging on my window. I tried to wave her off, but she was persistent, so I asked the doctors to please hold on, and I stepped out of my car to see what she wanted. She asked if I had ordered food, and I said "yes" and I told her I was on a very important call and could not talk, and I got back into the car. Then she started banging on the window again. I asked the doctors to hold another moment, and again stepped out of the car. She said I couldn't park there, that the spot was for picking up and dropping off food only. I asked her where the signs were that said that. She yelled at me "I own this restaurant, and you can't park here!" Her shiny black Audi was directly behind me, not in a spot. "Please leave me alone" I pleaded. "I am on the phone with doctors --" "I don't care!" she screamed. "You need to leave!" "Go ahead and call the police" I yelled, and I got back into my car and tried to resume my call. The woman got into her car, and leaned on her horn. The blaring horn made it impossible for me to speak with my daughter's doctors. Exasperated, I pulled away and tried to focus on this critically important conversation while looking for another parking spot, which turned out to be quite difficult. I finally found a place to pull over a few blocks away so I could complete the call. After the call ended, about fifteen minutes later, I found the nearest available parking spot, around the corner from the restaurant. Then I walked to the restaurant and observed the owner's black Audi in my parking spot. I carefully examined the parking meter, and again confirmed that there were no restrictions. I walked inside the restaurant and observed an empty table where my breakfast should have been. I told my server, and another server what happened. They were genuinely very sweet and sympathetic. They gave me a full refund, a fresh cup of coffee, and a bag containing my food, which they had previously packed up for me when they saw me inexplicably drive away. I expressed concern about whether my food had been tampered with, since I was not sure what that woman was capable of. They assured me and convinced me that no one had tampered with my food. I ate the food in my car. The omelette was cold, but it was decent. The coffee was very good. The jelly donut was quite delicious. Based upon this experience, I can't say whether this is the best breakfast place at Yale, but I can say that the owner is a raving lunatic who does not deserve your patronage. read more

Maison Mathis is located in a great and often over-looked corner of the Broadway shopping area of downtown New Haven. The clean and contemporary tiled cafe is spacious and the staff offered friendly and quick service both times I visited. The waffles are really fantastic; light, airy and crisp. The bacon, egg and cheese served on a small round baguette, was delicious also. I definitely would recommend for breakfast, lunch or even just coffee. Hopefully the service remains high quality beyond the grand opening period. read more

But the atmosphere is lovely, the staff are very nice, and the food was truly scrumptious. One note of caution--the staff weren't too down with the various Belgian waffle distinctions. I started to feel like I was crazy... but they, in fact, make the Brussels-style Belgian waffle (at least if the waffle shops in Brussels are to be believed about the distinction between the Brussels and the Liege waffles.) read more

I don't understand any of the negative reviews about this place; I've never had anything but overwhelmingly positive experiences at Maison Mathis. I've been frequenting Maison since last summer, and for many reasons. What first drew me in was the superficial - the restaurant has enormous floor to ceiling windows along the entire front wall that make the inside bright and inviting as well as intricately patterned and colorful tiles worthy of #ihavethisthingwithfloors, unlike the dozens of other hole in the wall, cave-like, libraries of hoarders-esque coffee shops New Haven is overfilled with. It's also significantly more spacious than most other coffee shops in the city with both indoor and outdoor seating in the summer. Aside from the restaurant's visual appeal, Maison also has both excellent coffee and food. I'm pretty picky about the quality of what I consume and I've never been disappointed here once. I usually get iced Americanos with a splash of vanilla and soy here and they're always perfect. For food, I love the quinoa salad and macaroni gratin. They also have their own waffle maker which they use to make authentic Belgian waffles fresh! Absolutely delicious. Lastly, the thing that makes me want to come back to Maison again and again is the service. I'm kind of confused by the other reviews posted about this place because in my experience the baristas are always extremely friendly - I don't think I've ever come in without being almost immediately greeted by an enormous smile and a hello. Also, my food/coffee has always come out quickly and correctly. I came in this morning and had a bacon egg and cheese with avocado and tomato served open face (delicious) and it was served to me within five minutes. The baristas (I asked their names, Dan and Brittany) were enthusiastic and positive, too, despite the fact that it was 8 a.m. on a Sunday morning. Overall, I have absolutely nothing negative to say about Maison! I highly recommend going here. read more

Just stopped into Maison Mathis for the first time as I was in the area and wanted a coffee and quick bite to eat. It's one of the best-looking places I've been to in New Haven. White-tiled walls, marble tabletops, huge windows looking out onto Broadway. Lots of individual and communal tables. No outlets, unfortunately (at least not that I can see). Many tasty-looking choices, but eventually decided to go with a coffee and croque monsieur. The coffee was good--nothing to fawn over but more than respectable. The croque monsieur was amazing. Open-faced, with a puddle of molten gruyere oozing all over crusty bread and thick slabs of good quality ham. They were even clever enough to pair it with a tiny pile of dressed greens to make you not feel like a complete fatty. Well played, MM. Overall, quite pleased with the new find. I have been there a few times. Very nice restaurant with all glass windows that provide a nice view outside. I went there for breakfast, the coffee was good, and the egg sandwich on a crispy roll was tasty. They do have a large selection of food products to choose from. My only issue was that you need to order from the menu, they will not alter any food products to your liking. Overall, the service was ok, and the food was good. I just had breakfast at Manson Mathis and although the food was good, I'm never going back there. The reason is the rude interaction with an employee. When I politely asked the server if he would please remove my plate, after I had finished, so that I would have a little more space, he rudely replied, 'No, you have to take it up to the counter. We only deliver the food to the table, you have to take it back.' Although I can understand and even appreciate this policy, I don't accept the lack of simply saying 'please.' His response was a command not a request. In my entire life of going to all different types of restaurants, in cities around the country and world, I have never encounter this type of rude behavior. I went to MM this morning (6/25) for the first time post-pandemic. I waited five minutes at the front of the line for someone to take my order. The guy who took my order was so non-verbal that I had to ask him if he heard me. I still left a 20% tip. I then waited 15 minutes for my food. When I checked the bag there were no utensils (it was a takeout order). Then when I asked the same guy for utensils, he informed me that he could only give me a spoon. It took a few seconds to clarify that they had run out of forks. The best part was that he made me feel like a jerk for wanting to eat my omelette and salad with a fork. His exact words were, "I'm not going to apologize for running out of forks." The food was fine but the service was atrocious. Save yourself the annoyance. read more

While it was timely, the person taking my order gave me an eyeroll of disgust as if I ordered the most obscure thing in the world (oatmeal) her coworker retorted with a sarcastic "of course". I felt like an idiot and asked "sorry is that an issue" and she goes "no clear out the screen" on the tablet and walked away. I tipped kindly because I think the chefs are awesome and the owners are great. I was waiting for my food while watching people self bus their table while the person taking orders was showing a video to the other one on their phone.
