Maison Mathis is fast becoming my favorite cafe in New Haven. It has a great location, good ambiance and a varied collection of items from breakfast, to sandwiches, to crepes, bakery items, juices, tea and coffee. The place is spacious, but can get crowded, specially by the Yale students who bring their "Apple products" to hang out at the cafe and some just stay there for an extended period of time :-) The food itself is good, more on the light side as most French cuisines are. Maison Mathis is yet another cute cafe in New Haven. It's quite spacious with marble designed tables (which aren't always the sturdiest). As a study break, I got a Belgian mocha, which was altogether way too chocolatey for me. Don't get me wrong, I like chocolate as much as the next person but it was more chocolate than I hoped for (what coffee?). Maybe I should've known that if Belgian mochas are different than regular mochas though. Overall, a good place to study if you don't mind conversations happening around you. Would consider returning to study while also getting a Belgian waffle (hoping they have pearl sugars!). read more

Stopped here for a quick lunch after an appointment for a Yale child study down the road. That was a fail. We ended up waiting 45 minutes for a chicken sandwich and a turkey BLT wrap. My friend ordered a large cappuccino and not only was the barista rude in telling him his drink wasn't ready (we were almost done our meal once he got a coffee), he also gave him the WRONG drink and refused to make him the right one when my friend pointed it out. Delicious and healthy! I had an egg white wrap with spinach, avocado, and cheese, and it was filling and tasty. I got a chocolate peanut butter smoothie as well, and though it was a bit icy, the flavor was still good. This is in a really nice area, and it was a quick ride from the bike path that runs through New Haven. It was a great spot to stop in the middle of our long bike ride. Ok wow, what a letdown. My brother, student at Yale, took my fam here since it's near his apt. I was initially impressed by the interior, because as other reviewers have noted, it's beautiful and looks exactly what you'd expect from a bougie millennial brunch place in New England. Everything else went downhill from there. DRINKS: We got Belgian mocha lattes and a chai latte, served to us in paper cups. We all agreed they were mediocre and somehow lacking flavor. When my brother got to the bottom of his cup of mocha, he went "ohh there's the chocolate." It'd be funny if we didn't pay $4 for it. AMBIENCE: Loud. The employees yell out the drink orders so you can go to the counter and pick it up, like Starbucks. Crowded, which isn't a bad thing on its own, but the table set up was very cramped. FOOD: My family ordered the Vermonter waffle, tofu scramble, and the avocado Benedict. - The waffle was ordinary and the "spicy maple syrup" is just red pepper flakes sprinkled in maple syrup. - The tofu scramble, to quote my brother: "meh, it's ok. I'm not really enjoying this, I'm only eating it because I don't want to waste food." - The avocado Benedict was subpar -- I order Benedicts whenever I can, and this was definitely one of the least impressive ones I've ever had. tbh, the dressing on my salad had more flavor. SERVICE: Bad. Slow. This is the main reason why I'm writing this review. Took 50 minutes to get 2 of our 3 dishes, with a lag time of 30 minutes after our first dish. We went to the counter twice to make sure they didn't forget about us. I watched an entire family sit down, eat, and leave before we got our full order. And the food came out lukewarm at best. I can forgive lackluster food with decent service and vice versa, but this was not it. IF this place had either one of have those things (oops), THEN prices would have been reasonable. Giving it 2 stars because I'm 25 and I imagine if I was a student here having brunch with friends, I probably wouldn't care so much. I dined at Maison Mathis for a Thursday mentor luncheon at noon. I ordered the Soup du Jour, which was a quinoa tomato bisque (served with roll), while my dining partner ordered a turkey sandwich. My soup was good, though nothing life-changing; I wouldn't order it again. The turkey sandwich was huge; but I can't speak to how good it is. We followed our lunch with a hot drink (peppermint tea for her, nonfat latté for me) and a brownie to share. We both enjoyed the brownie, which was rich and chocolatey (good for sharing!), meanwhile she loved her tea and I adored my latté. While the coffee itself was good, I was mostly excited about the presentation. The barista enchanted me with some leaf coffee art - it made my day! Food was great, coffee was great, absolutely no complains there and it's easy to see why this spot is so popular. However I think they can be doing a much better job at keeping their indoor customers socially distant. The staff were all wearing masks but the tables and chairs weren't properly spaced out. We were fine until almost the end of our meal when a three person group decided to sit at a table that was literally close enough for us to be part of their conversation. What an adorable spot! Stepping into Maison Mathis is how envision European bakeries to look and feel. We wandered in on a brisk New England afternoon and went wide-eyed upon first glance at the display case. The Belgian Mocha Latte ($3.75?) was a great choice. I'm always hesitant with mochas because they are usually too sweet, but this one had just the right balance of espresso, milk and chocolate components. I loved that the cocoa was potent and the drink was rich without being excessively heavy. Their macarons are on the pricier side ($3.75 each), but I couldn't resist trying one! I went with the pistachio macaron. The buttercream was perfectly nutty and had a thick, almost custardy consistency. The macaron shells had hardened but still maintained that textbook chewiness. The Valentine Waffle ($10.00) consisted of a large Belgian waffle topped with sliced strawberries, whipped cream and chocolate syrup, perfect for sharing with a date or enjoying on your own for an indulgent pick-me-up! It was decadent, but not guilt-inducingly so. I loved the crisp, airiness of the fresh (made-to-order!) waffle. The syrup was closer to a dark chocolate in terms of sweetness levels which also came as an unexpected surprise. It was packed the day we came and it's not hard to see why. This is my new favorite spot in New Haven! Maison Mathis is the perfect place to spend the day studying and getting work done or also to just catch up with friends. The restaurant has a great vibe and a lot of great seating spaces indoors and outdoors. I have also never tried something I did not like. I highly recommend any of their wraps and the side salad that comes with them. The ingredients are freshly made and the food is very refreshing. The breakfast omelette and egg roll were also very fresh and delicious. All the drinks including the matcha, chai, and juices are also immaculate and they really satisfy the craving. This is my all-time favorite cafe in New Haven! You have to get a fully loaded waffle. I had the strawberry and whipped cream waffle and it was the most delicious waffle I have ever consumed. They only make a limited amount of batter each morning so they have been known to run out of waffles at the end of the day. The portion sizes for their entrees are filling yet not overly large. I always feel satiated after leaving. The bread is freshly made and I highly recommend their croissants. They are perfectly flakey, buttery, and light. The coffee and lattes are works of art. The lattes are quite strong in flavor. They have the best chai latte in town. I love watching my food being prepared. The smoothies are freshly made in the front of the house. My feelings on this place is so mixed. Sometimes my experience is great with so-so drinks and sometimes I have amazing drinks with awful service. I just recently went to this place 2 times in two days. The first day was great service and terrible drinks. I ordered the Belgium Mocha latte that tasted like a powder mix and water. Not great at all. The second day, I ordered an Almond Milk Latte (still not great) and Maple Waffles which were quite delicious but wasn't sure at first if it was worth the $8.00 they charged. I was originally gonna order waffles that were sugar coated but pre-packaged for $2.50 but was recommended by 2 workers to order the homemade waffles. I'm still quite curious about how the $2.50 waffles taste but I cannot deny that the $8.00 waffles tasted homemade, fresh and ultimately delicious and a great option for me. The waffles, in my opinion, would be great for someone that loves waffles and are not completely hungry. To be perfectly honest, I didn't walk in expecting to pay $13.00 for a latte & waffles but I can't say that I regret buying the waffles. The latte on the other hand............. I come down to New Haven annually and I have to hit up Maison Mathis every time. Their waffles are literally to. die. for. I wish they had this place in NYC. 5 stars for the waffles. Lots of students studying and gets hard to find a place to sit after a certain time (not impossible) on weekends, especially if you're coming with a group of friends. I usually get here pretty early (around 8-9am) to be able to find a seat or table for a group. Seats are hard, so may not be as comfortable for long-term sitting and studying. Both were delicious & served with a warm buttered croissant, green salad topped with a balsamic dressing & red bliss potato home fries. I've never really had a bad experience per se here though, so overall it's an okay spot to grab a quick bite/coffee or do some work. In terms of the food, I am a fan of the Belgian waffles and pastries (especially the eclairs). The waffles are quite large, delicate, and fluffy/crunchy at the same time. The drinks are nothing too special and somewhat expensive for no apparent reason. They have an okay selection of coffees/teas along with some other random items. We had a friend visiting from Ohio who had never tried macarons before, so we found a place on Yelp and despite some of the negative reviews, we thought "Whatever! Let's go!" We got there and immediately loved the look of the inside of the building and the vast menu of salads, sandwiches, smoothies, caffeinated beverages, and desserts. We ordered hot chocolate, iced coffee, a bunch of macarons, and a waffle. We had a great barista/chef/jack of all trades named Cam and we absolutely adored him. He made our first visit here a great one! We hope to be back soon because the service and the food we had was fantastic. The location is great and their menu is really good (that pesto chicken salad sandwich!) but for a long time this place suffered from a really off-putting vibe due to the management, I think. The staff seemed unhappy and it was slowly becoming more and more unpleasant; I went from being a daily customer to not walking in the door for months. Not a problem, but something some people may want to know. This could be the best waffle I've ever had. The waffle was perfectly crisp, lightly draped in a mist of maple syrup, and then topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. The latte was tasty and the perfect temperature. As with many of the stylish restaurants in New Haven, this place is not the place to get a cheap meal. Our breakfast for two cost over $30. Having said, I will be back again! Whenever I'm at the stores around this restaurant, I'll stop in for a coffee and dessert. I always look forward to an afternoon treat. Yesterday I ordered a cappucino and a slice of pumpkin pie which in the display looked yummy. Too bad it was anything but. It appeared to be a firm slice of pie but when I cut into it with my fork, it was pumpkin pie mush! And the crust was so stiff that my fork could not cut through no matter how hard I tried. How did they make this pumpkin pie? It was bizarre. The crust was so challenging that I had to pick up this slice of pumpkin pie and eat it like it was pizza. LOL, who eats pie like that. Very poor service. Counter staff is rude and very distracted with talking to each other about non work related conversations than actually helping their customers. I ordered an iced chai and a cortado .. don't have a cortado on your menu if you don't know how to make it. Thank you for the warm cup of milk! It took about 20 min to come out and the barista had to be reminded to make it. I received a hot chai instead of an iced and that was due to the counter staff not paying attention to my order. Quite frankly the food is perfectly fine. I got their pesto mac and cheese and a cheesecake brownie and my sister ended up getting a salad that was of a high quality. The issue here is that the price is unconscionable for the food that is presented! I would totally go here if someone was treating me out but not by myself. Also I'm sad to see that the waffles here didn't live up to the hype and much of it was meh.
