Just to be clear we did not order Pho. We got the grilled pork and chicken salad and the bun rieu and were impressed. Would have given 5 stars if the traditional herbs were served with the bun rieu (perilla and water spinach) but the taste was on point and the rieu was the classic kind (not made into a ball). Grilled meats were pretty darn tasty, not the best I've had but not far off. Turns out the chef was Mexican! Why not? We're pretty picky, having been spoiled by Little Saigon Vietnamese food, but I have to say the short ribs w/rice we had here was one of the best we've ever had. Perfectly seasoned and tender. The pho was just so-so, but the owners are hilarious, treat your kids nicely, and make dining (and picking up food) enjoyable. I am shocked at these reviews! This is the only Pho we go to as a family. Nothing else compares. We order a secret item- the GRILLED chicken pho. Totally changes the flavor and it's amazing. The main server/cashier is so nice. He jokes with people, and sensitive people can get offended, but he is just playing. It's more of a laid back place where you have to assertive. There are few employees so you need to just say what you need. Don't be the person sitting in the corner quiet waiting for something- it's just not that kind of place. I'm all for friendly atmosphere but the guy that took my order acted way too familiar with my fiancé and I. Like we were long time family friends. My fiancé decided to get Greek food next door while I ordered my pho. The pho guy took it upon himself to tease my fiancé repeatedly once she joined me at the table outside-- I guess he took it personally that she wanted to try something else from the food court? He practically poked and prodded her food, his fingers an inch away from her pita while she was trying to eat. Maison de pho is a welcome respite of Vietnam deep in South Orange County. On a cold day, or even a warm one, it's hard to beat a steaming hot bowl of pho. I have been to Maison de pho about four times now, usually ordering the eponymous entrée: a steaming hot bowl of Vietnamese beef soup with rice noodles. Vietnamese people are VERY picky about pho; everyone I know swears by a different place in Little Saigon as the pinnacle of pho. Maison de pho, for it's location, is a good *pho* restaurant. When you go to Maison de pho, the "house of pho ", order pho, not rice, and not boba (which isn't even vietnamese!) When you go a seafood restaurant, don't order the chicken and then complain it's a bad restaurant. Food places should be judged foremost on their signature dishes. LOCATION: next to the movie theater in Foothill Ranch, in a space once occupied by a coffee shop. MdP is has Golden Spoon on one side, and the Nestle Cafe on the other. The coffee bar was converted to an open kitchen layout, unusual for Vietnamese restaurants. STOCK: very good - bread makes or breaks a sandwich; the stock makes or breaks pho. It's commonly called broth, but stock is strained; broth is not. The dominant flavor comes from hours of simmering with beef bones. Anise, cloves, cardamom and cinnamon give a subtle counterpoint. Onions and other aromatics provide the low notes and finish. The stock is rich, well strained, well seasoned, exceptionally smooth, and served steaming hot. Disclosure: I'm southern Vietnamese, and we tend to like this Northern dish on the milder side. Northerners tend to favor pho with heavier seasoning and spices (more bite). NOODLES: good - The second most important component is the bánh pho. These rice noodles were good, though not exceptional. They are cooked just past al dente, which is appropriate for pho. The noodles bite and chew cleanly, and have the usual rectangular cross section and size. The taste is neutral, which is also appropriate for pho. Ideally, they would have more body to them, but it's more than good enough. BEEF: fair - I prefer pho tái nam, a combination of sliced rare steak and pre-cooked beef brisket. Taste and texture were good, but if I had to criticize, the beef is not generous in quantity. To which my American uncle (who married a Vietnamese wife, has been to Vietnam several times, and eats Vietnamese food several times a week) said "that just makes it authentic." He's got a point; pho restaurants in Vietnam are notoriously stingy on protein. But here in America, that's a little harder to excuse. My cousin ordered extra beef, and it didn't appear to improve things much. GARNISHES: good - pho restaurants serve a plate of garnishes, typically basil leaves, bean sprouts, lemon, and sliced chili peppers, all of which may optionally placed in your ph. The American analogy would be ketchup, mustard, onions, relish and maybe chili that go on your hot dog. Vietnamese people can be fanatical about which garnishes go into their pho, just as Americans have very firm ideas about what tops their hot dogs. MdP's garnish plates were fresh and well presented. CLEANLINESS: very good - My parents always taught me to wipe down the utensils before you eat at a Vietnamese restaurant. Thankfully, MdP is well lit and clean. REST OF THE MENU: I agree with the other reviewers that the rice and noodle dishes are not as strong. Spring rolls are fair - need shrimp. Portions are modest, but enough to satisfy most. In Little Saigon, where competition is much stiffer, this would not stand. Other local pho places have more well rounded menus. SERVICE: good - as typical for pho, service is very fast, we're talking McDonald's or Chick-Fil-A fast, even on busy days. The staff are friendly, and more eager to serve you in English than Vietnamese--a plus for this area. But as typical Vietnamese, they take your order, deliver your food, and return for the check. That's a part of Vietnamese restaurant culture that could use some improvement. COMPARED TO THE COMPETITION: Pholicious, a lunch place on Alton and Trabuco, definitely has better rice dishes. Overall, I like it better, but MdP is a much shorter drive for me...and has a better dinner location. Pho Bo Vang on Mercury and Rockfield (near Lake Forest and Rockfield) has a more herb infused stock, which some palettes would prefer, especially Northern Vietnamese people. Pho 99 (Lake Forest and Muirlands) is my least favorite in the area...the stock is flat to me. Again, Vietnamese people are fickle about pho. PRICING is similar for all...~$7 per bowl...higher than Little Saigon by a $1 or 2. CONCLUSION It's great to see Vietnamese cuisine venture further and further from the safe confines of Little Saigon. The pho is good, and so is the location. Three and a half stars, but five stars given to correct the unfairly poor reviews. read more

Moved to Laguna Hills from Little Saigon, and have been hunting like a rabid beast for some decent pho. Not only did I fail by going to the OVERPRICED pho joints around here ($10 for a bowl of less-than-mediocre pho warrants both middle fingers) but I was a second from driving down to Saigon just for a fix... When God whispered "Maison de Pho" lovingly in my ear. God makes no mistakes, because this is a hidden gem in a land of horrible selection of authentic ethnic variety. Anyone searching for butter-like oxtail in perfectly balanced broth would delight in this establishment. The service is SUCH a contrast to most pho places where the staff is disconnected, rude, and seemingly on their menstrual cycle (men included). Maison has THE nicest staff ever, genuinely caring about each guests' options and preferences. They're just warm and accommodating, never rushing or hesitant to refill or ask if there is something they can do. Servic should be this great everywhere. The star of the show is the Oxtail pho, which is about $7 a small bowl, and is worth more than that. The meat melts like butter in the broth and is enough to make a person smile before the next bite; deliciously rich and not greasy like other places. Oxtail Pho for life! This is the place to be for oxtail, hands down! The portions are big and the broth is full of flavor without the usual feeling thirsty feeling after consuming MSG. I don't know how they manage to serve so many people during the lunch rush. I have never had a problem with the service, these guys know how to manage a crowd. Though the price is on the higher side for pho, it does not disappoint. Also had a chance to try the spring rolls here and it was just okay, but I didn't come here to have spring rolls. My fiance and I love eating here for lunch, and we're definitely regulars. The brothers (or maybe they're cousins) are super nice people, and always remember us and our orders. When you order your food, it's usually on the table no more than 2 minutes after, and I don't think it's too terribly expensive for all that you get. Plus, it tastes good, so I'll pay a little extra for a satifsfying meal! The one complaint that I have is about the guys that step in when the owners are off on Sundays and Mondays. They're not very nice people, they don't pay attention to detail (such as when your drink is empty) and they just don't have the type of personalities that would make customers want to flock to them. I would say that if you want your best experience there, go right before or after the lunch hour rush, and DON'T go on a Sunday or Monday! read more

Came on a Sunday morning and wasnt even greeted by a half asleep host that looked like he rolled out of bed from a night full of raging (His hair wasn't brushed and he definitely had more than a 5 o'clock after shadow on his face). I had to physically bring my menus outside for myself. Ordered house spring rolls and he brought the sauce in a to go container that looked like it was saved from the night before. Oh well whatever's.. Ill let that slide. Ordered the #1 pho with the meat on the side. He brought the meat first and it looked brown and bruised like it was days old. We asked for a new one and he rudely took the meat back for another one. Came back a few minutes later with the pho and meat. The meat was fresher (red) but I only got 3 pieces. The only reason I'm giving two stars is because of the good experience with food and service we got the first time. I'm writing this as I'm waiting for the check. I don't know where to begin, I eat here about 3-8x a week (depending). The Maison brothers are so accommodating and always know what I am going to order before I order it. I'd give 4 stars for service, 3 stars for taste. A friend and I walked into this place and were greeted by a very nice man. We wanted to sit outside so they immediately followed us with chopsticks and all the sauces that would go with pho. We ordered, and the food came quickly. I got the #2, rare beef and brisket, and we shared the fried wontons. The bean sprouts that came on the side were not fresh and looked like they were going bad. I still put them in my soup but they were not as fresh as most places have them. The soup was tasty but it was way too greasy - it had upset my stomach afterwards because I'm not used to that much grease. The wontons were eh, not the typical wonton you'd expect. I wasn't sure what the filling was but I wasn't a fan... and they were fried in a different type of wrapper. But the sauce for it was good. The men working were super friendly and cracked jokes with us but this was probably one of my least favorite pho places I've been to... And I've been to a ton. But maybe I'll be back for something other than pho or wontons! read more

The food is okay. The service was much better 6 months ago but I think they are just too comfortable. What I mean was we used to be greeted at the door, and food was out in a matter of minutes. (We always order pho with steak or meatballs) but all of this has changed. We've dined probably more than 30 times in the last year, but the last 6 times the meat quality was horrible. I'm not expecting filet mignon quality on this type of dollar range but the meat was chewy, and even the server admitted that they've received a lot of complaints about it. Former pho virgin here. I see and hear so much about these noodles that, once I found myself in front of such a restaurant, I had to go in and see what all the fuss was about. Menu is pretty simple - I mean, it's basically just a bowl of noodles and broth, you just have to figure out what else you want swimming around in there. Being a gluttonous pig, I ordered a large bowl with shrimp and extra chicken. Dude had it out to me in, like, 3 minutes. Already I'm pleased. They also give you a little dish with some jalapenos, sprouts, cabbage, and carrots. Despite there being very little to it, it was delicious. Perfect on a cold night, which this was. They loaded my bowl with protein; there was so much chicken and shrimp I almost wasn't sure if I could eat it all. Ok, that might be a lie but it was easily enough for two people. Both the shrimp and chicken were cooked well, not overdone or dried out like I've experienced in Asian soup dishes before. Noodles were plentiful and tasted great thanks to the abundance of spices and sauces I piled into it. I like my food spicy, so be sure to add whatever they've got on the table to taste. It's cheap, too. I think my large bowl with extra chicken was around $10. Great deal considering how much they pack in there.
