I usually cut my son's hair but we had grown a mullet and I didn't want to mess it up, especially since my son has really dark, stubborn Asian hair - it'd be easy to find the imperfections. The lady who cut his hair was fast (took probably 20 min total). She knew exactly what kind of cut I wanted (2 block hair cut). And because his hair was so long in the back, she double checked before cutting that I wanted to cut it off (much appreciated!). My son's hair was short on the top so she didn't cit length but did blend it (see pics). The place itself was clean and spacious. The cut itself was $45 without a wash, which is a couple dollars cheaper than other places I was looking up. I'd come here again.

I specifically asked if the stylist understood the issue and knew what needed to be done, and I was assured that they did. Unfortunately, once the haircut started, there was no communication about how much hair would be removed. The very first cut on the sides was much shorter than I expected, and at that point there was no way to undo it. If the stylist had explained their approach or confirmed the length with me first, I would have had the opportunity to say that it wasn't what I wanted. What disappointed me most wasn't just the final result--it was the lack of communication. When a customer brings reference photos and asks questions beforehand, I expect the stylist to explain the plan and make sure we're aligned before making irreversible changes. I left feeling that my concerns and the reference photos were not really taken into account. I hope the salon can improve communication with customers in the future so others don't have the same experience.

My hair is medium length and layered and the ash blonde/brown came out really nice, but I am still kicking myself for paying this much. I would have expected a nice head massage, complimentary tea or something for paying this much with a balayage, but it was a professional balayage with basic service/experience.

I thought that was excessive at first but trusted her word that she could make it happen and I was very excited. They got to work and everything was fine, until they finally washed out the bleach and my roots were glowing yellow while the rest of my hair was orange!! This is something I imagine would happen with $10 bleach from CVS, not with the $500 bleach they charged me for. They ended up putting more bleach on my hair to try and fix the mess, ended up staying in that salon for nearly 6 hours for some highlights. They put toner in my orange mess of hair and told me that it would all be okay. WRONG! When they finally washed the toner out, my hair was still extremely warm and orange with lighter roots! As she was drying my hair I had asked her if this is for real $500 dollars, and she proceeded to tell me how much work they put in to make me "happy" when over half of the time I spent sitting on my ass waiting and waiting for them to fix that mess!! I complained about the fact that my roots were obviously lighter than the rest of my hair, and she offered a free toner for next visit. That was all she was willing to give so I came in yesterday to get it. She told me to come in at 1:30 and I came 5 minutes early just to sit around and wait 45 more minutes to finally be seated in the salon chair! I can tell she was irritated that I actually came to get the free toner she offered, when she finally applied the toner she sat me in the uncomfortable hair washing station chair for so long I started to think they forgot about me! She blowdried my hair super roughly and NOT to my surprise, my hair looked damn near exactly how it did when I came in. Overall, I don't know if it's the products they use or just an unfortunate hairstylist, but this place is an absolute waste of time, money, and expectancy of service. Once again, they had me paying over $500 for my hair to look horrendous! This was frustrating because I'm a teenager treating myself to a new hairstyle for back to school, just for it not to turn out anything like I wanted. I've had so many amazing hair colorists make my hair fantastic and I never ever had to pay this much money! Is this place taking advantage of young girls and their ignorance? I'm literally ginger! This is what I get for trying out a new salon. Sorry not sorry! Is there a way to leave 0 stars?

Maria J. Gonzalez Reviewing and singing praises for Yoriko Birdie. I have had my hair "done" by Yoriko Birdie for the last five years and she is as good as it gets. I come to her and say "do whatever you think I need" or bring in a picture of what I want done to my hair, be it color, highlights, cut. She is always willing to take my suggestions into consideration but wastes no time in explaining why a certain cut would not work for me. I listen, as I know this master knows what she is talking about! I first met Yoriko when she was working at Plum hair salon in Burlingame. I followed her to San Mateo and will follow her anywhere, within reason! Yoriko Birdie is a pro, not only because of her talents with hair, but with her demeanor; always kind and cheerful, even if she has a full schedule and is on her feet most of the day. I am very fortunate to have met Yoriko and proud to call her my hair stylist! The salon is clean, neat, and everyone there is kind and curteous to all customers. Every time I see Yoriko for my hair needs, I leave the salon, knowing and feeling like I was pampered and been "worked" on by a pro. This speaks millions to one's sense of well being! I'm a new client at Maison Deux in San Mateo. I had the same stylist for 8+ years in the peninsula, I was devastated when she moved to San Jose back in March 2010 and was frantically looking for a salon close by to where I live since my schedule is somewhat hectic at times and need a salon where I can possibly make an appointment on short notice. During this time I went to a couple of salons in San Mateo with not the greatest experience. I called Maison Deux last minute to see if they had a 5pm appt, which they did with Angela. Angela cut and styled my hair with great results!!!! I would occasionally come back to get a blowdry and style as needed. And just last week I had a Keratin blowout from Angela and had the best results!!!! My hair is naturally wavy with frizz and the kinks, and the Keratin helped ease that. Ellie at Maison Deux is the best! I had a bad hair cut from a previous stylist and was searching for someone to fix it. Ellie was very accommodating and made an appointment the same day I called her. The salon is new, stylish and relaxing. All the stylists were nice when I arrived. They offered me a drink and made sure I was taken care of. Ellie was so nice. She made me feel welcome. I came here yesterday for the first time and for my first ever keratin treatment. Briana did an amazing job. She was very knowledgeable about the process and explained what it would do to my hair and how she would apply it given that my hair has been bleached and dyed numerous times. She listened to my concerns and was able to advise me as well as provide me with recommended products that would be good for my hair. I like how she did not push me to buy the salon products (unlike most salons I've been to) and told me where to get the products that she recommends. My hair feels super healthy and looks amazing. I would say my hair cut was a special circumstance here. I have been growing out my hair for almost 2 years to be able to donate it to an organization that makes wigs for children who are dealing with any type of health crisis which causes them to loose their hair.
