We were thrilled to find two seats at the end of the bar when we arrived. As luck would have it, the two gentlemen next to us eventually left, allowing us to slide over and enjoy an even better view of the TV for the rest of the game. I started with a Tito's and club soda, but unfortunately, something seemed off--perhaps the club soda was flat. The drink just wasn't good. To their credit, the bartender took it back without hesitation and was very accommodating. I then ordered a Negroni after the woman sitting next to us highly recommended it. I don't usually drink gin, but this cocktail was absolutely delicious and changed my mind. Since we were there for several hours, we shared an order of zucchini and eggplant chips and happily snacked on them throughout the game. The atmosphere was comfortable and welcoming, with a nice mix of ages and people enjoying the evening. We made sure to leave our bartender a generous tip since we occupied our seats for the entire game. Even though the Knicks didn't pull out a win that night, we certainly didn't leave defeated. I'd happily return for another game, cocktail, and fun evening out. And maybe even get dinner there. Little did I know there was another big room in the ack once you past the restrooms. They were having a thriving business there!

He took the time to listen to our concerns and invited our group back so we could give their group another chance. While I still stand by how our initial experience made us feel, I also think it's important to acknowledge when a business owner responds with professionalism and genuinely works to rebuild trust. Our return visit was a completely different experience. I appreciate the way the owner handled the situation and his willingness to have an open conversation with us. It doesn't change what happened that first night, but it did change my impression of how much he cares about his guests and his business. I wanted my review to reflect that as well.

Two-part, proper settle, tight dome, no rushing it. That's rarer than it should be in Midtown where half the bars treat a stout like a lager. Whoever's behind the bar here has been trained or grew up around it. Food's better than a second-floor pub between 5th and 6th has any right to be. The JRB burger comes on a house-ground patty (they grind in-house, and you can tell, loose texture, actual seasoning), caramelized onions cooked down all the way, not just softened, good cheese pull. Fried pickles on the side had a crisp cornmeal shell and stayed crunchy under the burger juices, which never happens. Buttermilk chicken salad was the surprise. Chicken actually brined, crust stayed on, greens weren't an afterthought. Only real knock: music was loud. Not sports-bar loud, more like the bartender's playlist got away from him. Fine at the bar, harder at a table if you want to talk. Room's got real bones. Reclaimed barn wood, old rail track as a foot rest, that big 45-star flag on the wall. Been here almost 20 years and it's aged into itself. For the neighborhood the pricing's fair. Beats P.J. Clarke's on the burger, loses on quiet. Go for a beer and a burger, not a date.

Bartender review: Rich/Mitch (I can't remember his exact name) has developed a reputation for being overly focused on maximizing tips toward the end of his shift. He regularly requires customers to close out their tabs before he leaves, even when they plan to continue ordering drinks afterward. More concerning, however, is his treatment of customers. On multiple occasions, he has been openly rude and aggressive toward both new patrons and regulars. A friend of mine stopped going to Maison Harlem entirely after an incident where he yelled at her and her friend for sitting at the bar while only ordering soda instead of alcohol. She also witnessed him berating another customer who briefly stood up from their bar seat to stretch, telling them that if they were not actively using the seat, they should give it to someone else. I personally had an experience where I came in near the end of his shift and simply asked for a drink, only to be told, "The bar is closed," despite the establishment itself still being open. It felt less like an operational issue and more like he did not want to serve a drink if he would not personally receive the tip from it. Overall, Rich/Mitch's behavior comes across as hostile, unprofessional, and damaging to the atmosphere of Maison Harlem. Edgar has a reputation for holding grudges and allowing personal feelings to affect how he treats customers. Many regulars know that if you get on his bad side -- even over something minor or perceived -- your service will noticeably suffer. He will avoid acknowledging you while you are waiting to order, serve people who arrived after you first, and sometimes occupy himself with other tasks, like cleaning glasses, instead of taking your order. For example, he consistently slow-rolls my cousin whenever he comes in, despite not knowing that we are related. The last time I visited Maison Harlem, Edgar completely ignored me over what appeared to be a perceived slight from three months earlier. Even after making eye contact with him twice, he continued serving customers who had arrived after me before finally acknowledging me. Another time I decided to order different drink than what I regularly order and the following week I went back to my usual order. At my next visit, the bartender mistakenly made the drink I had tried that one time instead of the drink I actually ordered. I politely sent it back, and even other patrons at the bar commented that it was not what I had ordered. Apparently, he did not take that well. That incident happened FOUR MONTHS AGO, and ever since then, the service I receive from him has noticeably changed. He consistently delays taking my order and bringing my drinks. One evening, I timed it: he cleaned the bar, served multiple customers who arrived after me, and only brought my drink after about 15 minutes. Another time I came in with a friend. He brought her drink almost immediately, but I waited nearly 20 minutes for mine while he chatted with other patrons, cleaned glasses, and even went downstairs to the basement before finally serving me. On two separate occasions, he comped my friend's drink while still charging me, which only reinforced the impression that the treatment is personal. Overall, the behavior feels petty, unprofessional, and unnecessarily hostile over what should have been a minor and routine correction to a drink order. Customers should not feel like they need to accept an incorrect order just to avoid retaliation or poor service afterward. At this point, I have decided that I will no longer go to Maison Harlem when Edgar is working. His behavior creates an uncomfortable and unwelcoming atmosphere that makes the experience unpleasant. The bartender Art is consistently kind, professional, and welcoming. He creates a positive atmosphere at the bar and treats customers with warmth and respect. Every interaction with him feels genuine, and his professionalism and friendly demeanor are a big part of what makes Maison Harlem an enjoyable place to visit. read more

On 11/10/12 at 9:30 am we called them to ask what time the brunch was, they said they start at 11 am. At 11:05 we were there and the door was locked. The bartender inside waved saying they were closed. There was a food delivery person outside who said they start brunch "at 11-11:30". How about 1 pm??? Are you serious?? You just lost two potential regular customers. UPDATE: Given the extremely close proximity of this establishment from where I live (across the street), I decided to give them a second chance. The maitre d' welcomed us immediately upon arrival with a warm "Bonjour". It was almost 1 pm (the day after thanksgiving, Friday) and I was not sure about their available breakfast offerings. Luckily, they were still serving everything but the pastries, fair enough. I ordered the omelette made with 3 toppings of my choice (generous serving with side salad and potatoes) and my 2 other friends ordered the French toast and the Croquet Monsieur. The French toast had a side of fruit salad, bacon and potatoes besides the toasts with maple syrup (not your typical - a better one) and we all liked our dishes. The bacon was crispy and not very oily. The omelette I had was really really yum. The only flaw was, I ordered Americano and they brought a latte first. No problem, they brought me my Americano finally but it was a little unusual, there were particles of grounded coffee beans and it tasted a little weird. With some milk, it tasted OK. But, let me tell you this. This place has a great interior design, reasonable pricing, friendly staff, fresh, generous and yum servings of French delicacies - in the heart of Harlem. We started our meal with the French onion soup and foie gras, both of which were served in portions perfect for sharing. Try dipping some of the fois gras and bread into the soup. You will not be disappointed. Moving on to the main course, the cassoulet and wild mushroom risotto stood out with their exquisite seasoning - so perfectly balanced that there was no need for additional salt or pepper (available on the tables if needed). These dishes were particularly comforting on a cold evening, warming us with each spoonful. The service at Maison Harlem deserves a special mention too. I totally intend to come back and adjust my review down the line depending. The decor is very cosy and welcoming. Though i think somebody overestimated the durability of the brass piping between the floor boards, which when it was all intact looked great but now peel back in certain places and pose a hazard because it's sharp. The prices really are not that bad. You can get a burger ($10.50) cheaper here than most other Bistros nearby and the more fancy dishes are also on par with what others charge and their portions are very generous. What was most disappointing for me was the sauce that accompanied my pork chop (which was gigantic). On past trips to France what stood out most for me was just how mind blowingly orgasmic the sauces were and you didn't even have to be at some famous place like the Le Grand Vefour (which in hindsight I should have refinanced my mortgage to eat at) to experience it, you could be at a tiny out of site bistro with a handful of tables in the 6th Arrondissement. I also had the Mushroom soup which was the soup du jour. I didn't love it, not because it wasn't fresh because it was and you could taste it, but something about the texture was a little off and also the taste was missing something too. Their tragic downfall is similar to the host of other downtown meets uptown garden variety bistros. They boast the fare, prices, pretentious attitudes and biases of downtown without the quality of downtown service. The manager and the entire wait staff (because at some point they were all involved in serving our table) were slow, unaccommodating, and brusque. MH staff tried really hard to cater to the table next to us-a very fabulous couple, not from the community that received a number of free wine tastings but ended up buying a single glass. Ha! Ha! MH staff should not make assumptions; my friend and I could have easily been sold on a bottle if the service was half decent and I could stand to stay there longer than it took to eat a meal. We also live in walking distance and would make great repeat customers, oh well! I won't rush back here any time soon. read more

I had a client in town and he really wanted tom eat somewhere in Harlem. I know he like French Cuisine so I decided on Maison. He was a nice crowd foe a weeknight. I was very pleased with the service, decor and cuisine ( even though not a big French Fan it was a nice change of pace). My client is a big fan of escargots. I tried it and actually liked it. We wanted to try the food on the recommendation of our neighbors and friends, total disappointment, shame because first place in our life first restaurant that a customer insults me and my partner, shouting, horrible rudeness, we decided to leave. We were honestly shocked, and to see that the waitress was very polite in telling them to keep their voices down, but they were very rude and to see that the manager who was present, did nothing at all, horrible experience. This place is a guaranteed good time. Literally everything on their menu is tasty. And they don't get upset if you alter something on the menu. The food is always fresh and plentiful. I didn't ask for a refund. He could have said bring the pasta back and I'll give you the correct order. But the manager didn't even have the decency to say it himself. If the owner sees this, your manager isn't doing his job with helping or talking to customers. He's letting your hostess deal with his job. He's weak sauce and so is the $30 pasta I just threw away. So anyone who has an allergy or wants the order they asked for, TRIPLE CHECK this place. This review is about service not the food because I couldn't even eat it.

I have taken dozens of out-of-town friends to dine there, and have frequented it with my local friends at least once a month over these four years. And I have wholeheartedly recommended the establishment to many, many others. Friends who visited me this past December loved the restaurant so much, that they bought me a $100 gift certificate as a "thank you" for hosting them in my apartment. In July, I attempted to utilize my gift certificate (I'm a little low on cash right now) only to be told that it would not be honored, because the restaurant is under new management. I was shocked and really disappointed. The following day, I wrote directly to the management to express my dismay. I never received a reply. This is not how you treat loyal customers. And now you have lost one - one who has brought you a great deal of business over the years. And be assured, I'll be sharing the news far and wide about how you treat your patrons.

The contorni here are just that. It says roasted but the beets aren't, they're boiled and precooked and chopped at that from a plastic bag. No effort was made to make them taste any different than that either. The broccoli was similarly boiled and well, that's what they do in England but this is a restaurant calling itself Italian. The garlic was burnt and the boiled broccoli was smeared in vegetable oil -olive oil or butter would have been the possibilities for the pan but this broccoli was never in a pan. The lasagna which is normally a winner leaked a lot of water into a puddle on the plate and that happens when it's frozen but not fully thawed and reheat din a hot enough oven. The Riesling was a bit sour but the some of the others are undrinkable. A quar which in Europe would be 2 and a half glasses in a little pitcher is 1 and a third glasses in a curious tiny vase, so order two individual glasses because there are no savings on offer. Which is odd as wine is an inflation anomaly - a decent bottle runs 12 to 20 dollars at a wine store and did 20 years ago too. For the prices these cheap wines are very bad value though some of the reds are less disastrous. The pizza is great and I have no complaints about it but the word is out and the delivery guys are humming at the door through diner bumping into the back of your chair in a small huddle if as we were you are seated there. It's a descent going down at this nice little place. It is a bar that serves decent snacks, but can microwaving and shrinkfaltion be far off? One suspects not, unless they hire some sous chefs who took a 12 week course at a culinary school - but they won't. There's no chef here.
