Rich is a gem! I've been a fan of Maison Harlem for quite some time but I've never sat at the bar. The Quiche was microwaved from frozen, this turns the ice to liquid and then steam giving it the texture of over boiled eggs. The Croque Monsieur was never anywhere near a pan with butter, and to hide that, the toast was made with the cheese ON TOP! the sandwich. Why Why ever put the cheese on top a sandwich-they don't in France or even Canada. These are snack bar tricks the world over, they don't happen in restaurant kitchens. Sadly there was that sticky feeling on the table you get in bars where soap isn't used to wash the wood so the grease is there for the duration of the run - and the smell of a bar with deep air conditioning that makes you shiver too. Though it was a beautiful sunny day in the 70s -perfect for opening up the terrace doors - they didn't do that (too much work?) and instead left us sealed in a simulation of an open air cafe without the air. I'm sure some people love this place and they go for the drinks, that's cool. They like it, and most Americans wont look down on microwaved food and toaster oven fare. Haven't dined in Harlem for more than 5 years. My friend asked me to meet him here and I'm so glad he did. This is my new favorite restaurant! The atmosphere was vibrant yet cozy, the kind of spot that immediately makes you feel at home while still feeling special. We started with the clams, which were perfectly cooked and full of flavor, followed by a charcuterie board that was beautifully presented and had an amazing variety. The Paper Plane cocktail was perfectly balanced: smooth, slightly bitter, and just the right amount of kick. But the star of the night? The steak. While looking at schools, we went for lunch before heading home. This place was recommended by the friend we went with and I was already excited knowing it was french food. The bar is right up front for those who just want to stop in and the restaurant is in the back. They had music playing and artwork all over the walls. It had a lot of character and vibrant colors. The waiters were very attentive and our water cups were never empty. We ordered the mushroom risotto, hanger steak, lamb burger, and quiche. The plating was spectacular to start. I was wary of the carrots in the risotto, as I usually don't love them cooked, but I went for it anyway. To my surprise, it was a great addition to balance the earthyness of the mushroom and tang of the balsamic glaze. I literally had to make a similar dish the next day because I was craving it. I tried my boyfriends steak and wow was that good too. He subbed the red wine sauce for peppercorn and got the potatoes au gratin. The steak was medium rare and so flavorful and tender. The peppercorn sauce was different than expected, as I believe it was a red peppercorn sauce, so it tasted slightly more vinegary - pairing great with the steak. The potatoes were good, but we wanted a little more cheese. I did not try the other dishes, but I was told they were great as well. Not pictured was the tart tatin. I love a spontaneous find! We were walking around uptown in a new neighborhood and realized we would be down for some French food. The restaurant is cozy-- perfect for a date night-- and we saw quite a few first dates happening! The service was on point, too. We decided to share some saffran moules frites (mussels and fries), a burrata salad, and escargot. Everything was cooked to perfection. I was pleasantly surprised that the saffron mussels would be so savory. We had to ask for another basket of bread to dip in the sauce. Our food was good, but the service was lacking for me. It was friendly, but definitely not good. It's a pretty small restaurant, but the space is laid out in a way where you don't feel super cramped. It's quite cozy and warm. I really enjoyed the music-themed posters and how the menus are in vintage record sleeves. The playlist was also wonderful. We waited forever to order. My partner got a glass of wine, the truffle mac n cheese and a side of Brussels sprouts. I got the steak special. It came with fries, but I subbed for ratatouille because I like to always have a vegetable with my meals. Despite our wait to order, the food came out pretty promptly. My meal was all there but my partner still hadn't received the wine, nor the side of Brussles. A different person brought out entrees, so when asked about the wine, the person sent our waiter. He said he'd check on the wine and walked away so quickly that she didn't even get to ask about the Brussels sprouts. He quickly dropped off the wine and scurried off again and by the time we were saw him again, my partner was already finished with her entree and still hadn't received her side. Also, when I was midway through my steak, another server came by and dropped off a salad that apparently came with my entree. I wish the server had mentioned it before. It was already dressed and wouldn't have traveled well, so I opted to finish the salad instead of my steak. Our server did not check on us on his own at any point while we ate. We spent a lot of time turning our heads and looking for him and trying to get his attention. At the point where we were done with our dinner and wanted to order dessert, he was nowhere to be found and we sat idly for quite some time. Finally, he reappeared. He was carrying a huge stack of napkins and headed towards the back of the restaurant. Once he sat, we got his attention in the mirror and when he came over, we asked for to-go boxes and said that we'd also like to get dessert. Imagine our surprise when he announced that he was now off work... NOW. Typically when your waiter's shift ends, they 1) let you know and 2) introduce you to the person they'll be handing you off to?? This did not happen and very much rubbed me the wrong way. Our OG waiter hurriedly grabbed our plates and passed them off to another server to pack up. It was so hasty that the late-arriving Brussels we wanted to box was left behind. When the 2nd person came back with our to-go box, we asked if he was the person we could order dessert with and he said he wasn't our waiter either. Eventually we spoke to a 3rd guy who, surprise- also was not our new waiter. Eventually a woman took our dessert order, which as I am typing this - I'm wondering why we even stayed around for. Mussels with fries are heaping - large can serve two. My friend who goes regularly said the provencale (tomato) is the best - I'm not even a tomato fan but it was super tasty. Don't go here! It's not safe! My purse with my wallet, bank cards, ID, and keys were stolen as I was eating dinner. I came for a business meal and I won't make that mistake again. The crowd who attends Maison are very dangerous, they prey on diners and women in particular. The wait staff even saw my purse get stolen and failed to notify me especially since I never left my seat when my items were taken from me. So scary and unacceptable. I have a police report open and the detectives at the 26 precinct informed me that this happens a lot at the restaurant which is incredibly concerning -- and makes you think why hasn't safety and security been addressed? It's clear the restaurant doesn't care. This happened to me two weeks ago and I emailed the owners immediately afterwards hoping I would get an answer to resolving what happened and they still have not gotten back to me. I don't care how busy you are, to not respond speaks volumes of the vile characters of who runs such an "establishment." Maison Harlem doesn't care about the community it serves and believe me word spreads fast and already is. The restaurant and team are sloppy. The bar is incredibly small and packed since they start happy hour at 12pm. This attracts a bad crowd because who with a REAL and decent job is drinking at noon? Nobody I know. The restaurant is dirty, there are flies everywhere as you are eating which is disgusting and everything is overpriced. There are unpacked boxes throughout the restaurant which makes it feel even more cluttered and screams unprofessional. You're better off going to Le Monde if you want delicious French food and if you want to leave with your purse wallet and house keys! I'm so disappointed in Maison and I hope that this awful incident that keeps happening to diners encourages them to get their act together and invest in security and safety. Do better! read more

I came here for dinner with a friend. The French themed decor was tres adorable and the restaurant had a warm, cozy feel to it. However, the space was a bit cramped. Upon being seated, we were served complimentary baguette bread and butter. The bread was tasty and still warm. There were 2 duck dishes: Duck Confit and Hudson Valley Duck Magret. I was leaning towards the Duck Magret, and the waiter confirmed my choice. The Duck Magret came with peppercorn sauce, served with haricot vert (green beans) and potato gratin. This was plated beautifully, with plenty of sauce covering the duck, masking that it was quite rare. The duck was way too pink for me, and still wasn't tender or juicy. It was the sauce that saved it... Wonderfully savory, full of peppery taste, as well as rich. I definitely should have mentioned how rare it was though. The Haricot Vert was nicely crunchy and cooked well. Potato Gratin was baked in a rectangular shape and were layers of finely sliced potatoes, along with cream, butter, cheese. This was deliciously rich and full of bold flavor. My friend ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger with fries. I got to try some and found the fries to be addicting - Delightfully crispy and well seasoned. For dessert, my friend and I shared Chocolate Lava Cake, with vanilla ice cream. The cake had a sprinkling of powdered sugar and mint leaves on top. It was just okay, as there wasn't enough chocolate oozing out. The cake was still delightfully chocolate-y, sweet and soft. Ice cream was velvety smooth and paired well with the cake. Service was decent. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Prices were medium - Not cheap, but not that expensive either. As a restauranteur living 8 minutes from Maison Harlem. I've dined here a number of times which qualifies my opinions as valid. Here you will find excellent, friendly service. The ambiance is intimate and romantic with candle lit outdoor dining. In fact, everything about this place is great except for one constant problem which is that they seem unable to cook their fabulously thick and well-garnished pork chop properly, constantly over-cooking each and every one I've ever had. Therefore, if you go here and you order the pork chop, MAKE SURE YOU MAKE IT CLEAR that you want your chop MEDIUM RARE and JUICY or else you will always receive a dried-out piece of meat you won't enjoy. That is, unless you like eating over-cooked meat as many in this area do. They may actually purposefully overcook the chop because they may be tired of having it returned to the kitchen by ignorant diners who grew up in a non-American culture where meats are all generally overcooked. Regardless of the reason, the pork chops are always overcooked and dry instead of slightly pink and juicy. You'll be lucky to be waited on by the well-educated Jean-Baptiste whom you will find to be eager to make your dining experience memorable. The Escargot are excellent as well as the sea-food dishes, both of which I highly recommend but you may find yourself having to beg for more delicious bread so I suggest requesting more as soon as you get your first basket. After all, it's fresh, warm, deliciously French, and the butter is soft and easily spread. OMG, I almost forgot, the Calamari are the absolute BEST I've ever had so definitely get at least one order of that appetizer because they'll go fast. The atmosphere is charming beyond belief, the food is extremely good, and you find yourself wanting to linger over a meal so long that you may decide to simply stay for your next meal. For Christmas eve lunch out gang had an endive and roquefort salad, lobster bisque (the soup of the day), coq au vin, the cous cous royale, and the cassoulet. Every dish was perfect, and we want to eat the whole menu and will definitely return. I had a very mixed experience with this restaurant. When I entered, the hostess was having an animated argument with someone from the kitchen, and they kept arguing instead of tending to me, who was standing with a cane. When I was finally seated, I was next to a table where people were yelling at the top of their lungs and I asked to be moved to the back area, the waitress moved me a few tables back but she would not let me sit in the far back where I wanted to sit. She told me, rudely, its going to be very busy tonight and you can't sit there. While I was eating, I noticed there were still empty tables in that area. They put the menus in copies of record sleeves, interesting to see. I asked what was the soup of the day, I could have sworn the waitress said mixed vegetables but I was served a cream soup that I could not identify, it was tasty. The french bread at the table was mediocre. I had the duck magret with haricot verts and potato gratin, and my friend ate quiche with salad appetizer and we had creme brulee for dessert. The food came out quickly. The peppercorn sauce for the duck was exquisite, it had a dark pinkish color instead of the white I was expecting, so it must have been made with red wine. The duck breast was excellent too, although a couple of the slices were raw and I could not eat those. The potato gratin was dry. It was a very large portion and a very good deal for the price. My friend liked her quiche and salad and commented that it was also a large portion, for an appetizer. The creme brulee was decent and enough for two to share. They have an assortment of cocktails and wines and a choice of French foods that would satisfy any palate (except maybe a strict vegan who would only have a plain salad and vegetable sides to choose from). The busboys were extremely attentive, constantly refilling water and removing plates. The restaurant is cozy and they have an outdoor terrace, also a separate bar area in the front. There is a lot of noise emanating from the bar. The bathroom was clean but it had an odd unpleasant smell I could not identify. The bar area is not accessible, there are stairs on both sides, however, you can get into the restaurant proper from the side which is on level ground. The menu was really fantastic almost exotic actually. The food tasted great, and the service was good to HOWEVER, as much as I enjoyed the experience, i have to be honest: We did NOTE enjoy the fact that (for whatever reason) our highly anticipated Bronzino took an hour to come out to the table. Fortunately, the company I was with made the waiting time not quite as unbearable as it would've been otherwise. They brought out the food for two of us at the table and fortunately the person that ordered the Bronzino had also ordered a kale salad. So he didn't go completely without while waiting, but his anticipation really made the weight feel long. Our waitress, Ariel, did her best to placate us and ameliorate the situation. We were pleasant, but certainly annoyed by the situation, and she, while being put between a rock and a hard place, handled it all quite gracefully and professionally. We had a great experience at Maison Harlem on Christmas Eve, the staff is awesome as was everything else. Menu is cleverly placed in a vintage 33lp album cover! Started with a couple of French Pilsners and moved on later to one of the BEST Sangria's I've ever had, and I know my sangria's having lived in Spain back in the 70's. First course was the Escargot which was perfectly prepared alongside a small serving of PEI mussels, both of these were excellent. On to the main course with daily specials of a lobster risotto and duck confit, these were on point and very tasty. We didn't have room for desert but they had all my favorites, including chocolate mousse and crème brûlée. The ambience of the place is very cool with a nice bar in the front and good size seating area a couple of steps up in back. Great choice and will be back for some of the other delicious looking entrees, filet mignon and many more. read more

Maison Harlem is en route to being one of our regular NYC default stops. The ambiance and attitude is reminiscent of a Parisian brasserie. First impressions are the choice to have from three types of H20; fizzy, spring or tap (being at home in NYC we are partial to its tap water-seriously better than some bottled stuff). An option offered is the homemade baguette, served warm in a steel bucket with sweet butter packets- say Yes, it beats any take-and-bake. Likewise the signature seasonal cocktails; on the most recent visit I had the Big Apple, which in my mouth was a celebration of winter in the city in a glass. For the food order, I've been beyond-satisfied in ordering the Soup de Jour in the past few visits, with a side (or two). The latest feature was an Apple-Carrot soup; light, airy and satisfying. My husband ordered the Carbonara which he requested explanation: with the egg shell with raw egg: "Is that meant to be spread around the dish?" he asked; "Yes of course" was the reply. "The pasta is at the ideal temperature when the dish comes to you, for the raw egg to be spread perfectly" . He was absolutely correct. Maison Harlem! Decided to stop by this place for dinner randomly! We are trying to explore Harlem a little bit more. It's French cuisine, but I was surprised by the decor. It kinda reminded me of Louisiana/New Orleans. With elegant french antique style throughout the restaurant. It was loud and popping on a Friday night! Perfect for a small group of friends, but also intimate enough for a table of two. It took a while for our server to come to us, but he was very nice, fun, and energetic. He recommended a few specials, but we decided to start off with the calamari and fried oysters. Calamari was amazing, the fried oysters were interesting... i've never had them before and I just think it's a texture things for me! My friend loves fried oysters, but explained that this wasn't as good as she's had them in the past. For our mains, I got the kale salad with salmon and my friend got the cassoulet. The salad was amazing, but my salmon was undercooked and not cooked evenly. Besides that I would definitely order again. My friend thought that the cassoulet was yummy (her words not mine). She did say that the duck confit was a lil too bready for my liking but other that i liked the flavor and everything was well cooked. I wanted to explore the Harlem food scene and this one of the top on my list for a while. I walked in around 9pm to a great mood around the bar and open tables in the back. I was craving some Coq au Vin! Food: 4.5/5 I really enjoyed most of my dishes except for the Coq au Vin. The Steak Tartare and Merguez De Barbes were delectable! I am mustard hater but, you need to it to fully experience the creaminess of the tartare. The Merguez was clearly homemade and super flavorful. The Classic Coq Au Vin was tasty and pasta was very fresh but, the chicken was too dry for my taste. On the alcohol side, the White Lotus (mezcal cocktail) and hard cider were nice and smooth. Definitely getting them again. Service: 5/5 Seeing the previous reviews, all I have to say is Max DID WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE! He was amazing and attentive. Plus, for any French speakers, he is a pleasure to speak to. All in all, I am definitely coming back.
