BEWARE: Many of Maison Harlem dishes include truffle oil. Truffle oil may sound fancy but it's nothing more than olive oil with added chemicals to give the aroma of truffles without the added cost of actually adding truffles. Unfortunately, for some, the added chemicals cause an irritable, unpleasant reaction. Plus, what's appetizing about having added chemicals in your meal? My first meal from Maison Harlem was Seafood Pasta with a side order of the Truffle Mac and Cheese, which was very tasty, delicious and satisfying (I thought). This was not my first time having a meal with truffle oil, but was my first experience reacting to the oil in an unpleasant way. My initial thought was that I had food poisoning and after numerous failed attempts at reaching Jean, the owner/manager of the restaurant over the course of weeks to get some answers to my experience, Jean offered a partial credit. After the Seafood Pasta, Truffle Mac and Cheese, I didn't realize that the truffle oil was the cause of my experience. Several weeks after the ordeal, I tried the Mild Mushroom Risotto with truffle oil and had a similar but milder reaction. So I did some research online and figured out that the truffle oil was the culprit. I would be very careful ordering any of their dishes that include truffle oil. Listen to your body if the aroma turns your stomach a little bit, because, otherwise, you'll pay for it later with frequent visits to the lavatory ... and will get little - if any - sympathy from the restaurant whose food caused you the grief. read more

After posting my previous review I was contacted by the restaurant manager. He apologized for my experience and offered me a $50 gift card. When I followed up about the details, it turns out they aren't willing to give me the gift card outright. I have to make a reservation and they'll "mark down" the discount. (That means they will put a big star by my name and the entire staff will be threatened to give me the best service ever, or else.) Now that's all fine and dandy, I'm sure, but it doesn't say much about his confidence in his wait- or kitchen staff to just give me a better experience the next time I come back without warning. I would actually really like to decorate my apartment like Maison Harlem. I really enjoyed the look of this restaurant with its ever so charming rustic interior. You know the deal: exposed brick, warm woodwork, a chalkboard, hanging black chrome light fixtures, lots of natural light, an outdoor patio...even some quirky bits like a rooster painted the colors of the French flag, a shelf of motorcycle helmets, a soccer ball, and a lone bicycle with a potted plant hanging from its handlebars. It's easy to tell that the two Frenchmen owners (one a chef and another a former dancer!!) have an eye for design. A restaurant's ambiance sets the mood, and this one surely helped us enjoy our casual lunch. My iced tea came in a mason jar which had me grinning for a good few minutes. My future housewarming, wedding, and basically any celebration is definitely going to incorporate mason jars. It's probably going to be so cliche by then (dang it). The juice selection is a good size, but the "large" juices here aren't quite so large, so beware! Our sandwiches were pretty good, but we were slightly disappointed because both sounded much more promising. The skinny fries that both sandwiches came with were crunchy and delightful, though. The Merguez sandwich was spicy lamb sausages and roasted red peppers sandwiched between two toasted baguettes. While the lamb sausages were indeed spicy, it was not enough flavoring for the entire sandwich; it could have used some sort of sauce or spread. The Poulet Ratatouille had roasted chicken, goat cheese, and ratatouille vegetables (peppers, onions, eggplant, and zucchini) sandwiched also between two baguettes. I asked our waiter if the goat cheese was very strong (I hate goat cheese!), and he assured me that it was not too overwhelming and a good addition. After the sandwich was served to me, he checked in on me and my goat cheese conquest, which proved how wonderful the service here is. The goat cheese wasn't overwhelming like our waiter had said and it complemented the chicken, but I would have liked the ratatouille vegetables to be just a bit more...tomato-y? Decor and service wins! Four stars. Likelihood of another visit: For tips on interior decorating, I will be back for sure! I normally don't wrote bad reviews unless people really screw up. I've been here before and service was so slow and food over cooked. Gave a second try by ordering delivery... Big mistake. First of all after over an hour waiting I called to see the status and the guy said it JUST came in so I said ok since he promised he'd have the kitchen rush the order and I'd wait another 20 minutes. However 5 minutes later I get the delivery and it is ICE COLD! Not the cold from exposure to the cold weather outside but cold to the point where the fries were so soggy and cold it was like McDonald fries. The burger which I ordered medium since I know places tend to over cook was made WELL DONE... Now I'm not sure not was it noted that their burgers are served on French bread vs broiche but that was extra hard and chewy and i wasn't able to eat it. Such a waste of my money. read more

I had a good in-house experience but a poor delivery experience. I popped in for dinner one night. The space is cute but a bit crowded/loud. The servers were fast enough but a bit distracted by the volume of customers. Other than that, the food was very good (I had duck, my husband had steak). I especially like the mashed cauliflower. I ordered delivery one day and was insanely disappointed in the order. This time I ordered the Merguez de Barbes (grilled lamb sausage). This is my favorite to go to the spot for the soup of the day. I don't know what they put in it, but it's so healthy and wholesome that I come back almost every single day for it. Comes with very nice French bread. Service is always excellent, and the ambience is absolutely fantastic for date night but also for a night on your own if you want to have a bite by yourself. They have a really cool live Jamaican band that plays every Wednesday I believe from like 5 to 10 PM. I highly recommend. Also they have a phenomenal seafood risotto with truffle that I really love. They do have happy hour during the week if you're into that and the bartender in the front (Camilla) often DJs. She has phenomenal music style. read more

I have been here twice. First time was a year ago for lunch and most recently for dinner. Ambience: Modern, almost museum-like decor. Crowd was very diverse age and race wise. Service: We were seated immediately by the host. Our waiter, although a bit eccentric, was nice and attentive. Food: The first time I came I had the burger and although it was nothing out of this world, it was good. The lamb sausage and fries were plain. The lamb is slim sausage links, like the ones you have for breakfast; they are somewhat dry. Mussels were decent and oysters quite fresh. The wild mushroom risotto was soo freaking delicious and quite filling. Price: Like others mentioned, a bit high for the area. Sadly, The experience really went south early on as the menu lacked several items. The waitress wasn't astute enough to ask a table that had ordered a bottle of wine, if they wanted another and got flustered when I called her out for prematurely bringing the check. She never asked if she could get us anything else before attempting to give us the check. We then ordered dessert and finally almost 40 minutes later asked her to bring the check after being neglected more wine and water even . The ricotta less lasagna was a miss. While it had good flavor, it lacked sauce and was very on the dry side .(confirms why i prefer ricotta in mine)The escargot was ok. The apple tart didn't work out as well as I would have liked. I was especially annoyed that on a Friday night a waitress wouldn't see a table chatting and sipping on wine and not ask if we wanted more wine. Just brutal. Full disclosure: I live next door, so this is kind of my lazy go-to for brunch, dinner, drinks, etc. if my partner and I don't want to leave the intersection. The food is great; the decor is great and the prices are reasonable for the location (there are more expensive French places and myriad cheaper alternatives nearby). However, I will echo others when I say that service could stand to be improved upon. The waitstaff is very nice when you can get them to your table, but from my 10+ times eating here, I find that the waiters are a bit overextended and very intent on their interpersonal relationships with each other; they always have time for a bit of gossip. I wouldn't say it's unprofessional, but their job sometimes seems secondary to their social calendar--they're all relatively hot with an international flair, so I can't really blame them! It's like Harlem's version of Vanderpump Rules. Favorite dishes: -The burger -Carbonara -Endive and Roquefort salad -cheese and meat platters -French toast -Eggs Nordique (benedict with smoked salmon) I haven't ventured into the truly French cuisine they have to offer, but their bistro foods are excellent. read more

Yet again another outstanding addition to fine dining venues in Harlem. I'll come right out by saying that this restaurant has the best steak on the West side of Harlem, hands down. I have always believed that the French make some of the best steaks, and Maison Harlem definitely backs up that belief. I had the shell steak with peppercorn sauce. Highly recommended and worth every cent. So tender and full of robust flavor. Also the frites that come with the steak are exceptional. Not soggy, but crispy and spiced delightfully. Not sure about the other wines here because this was my first time here and I had a bottle of the Malbec, but I do highly recommend you get it with the steak. It's a perfect complimentary balance. Lastly, I love the ambiance and decor of Maison Harlem. I am a big fan of any venue that uses a plethora of wood design. There are so few venues that you can walk into and feel a bit like you're in the country, but the wooden decor here makes you feel right at home and relaxed. The bar area is very nice too. I'll be back just for drinks as well. It's a good casual hangout spot. Two thumbs up for Mainson Harlem. This my 2nd time in as many months. Like others have said, a most welcome addition to the upper part of Harlem world's restaurant row. Despite the fact that it was raining and still feeling like early March outside, Maison looks, feels and tastes like the real Parisian bistro deal (not that I've been to Paris... yet). My beloved and I showed up around 9ish on a Friday night to a smiling, pansexual, multiracial, multi-generational, nice looking crowd, packed comfortably into the small, very well-designed bar area in the front half of the space: Note to self: Downtown has come Uptown. Everyone who works here (at least 90%) is from a far flung former colony so the accents were all over the map, prompt us to try on our own corny French accents as we read the exceptionally well-executed menu aloud. And it gets louder as it gets later. I found myself shouting over the music at one point during our meal. As far as what to eat if you'r eon a cleanse or just being mindful: it's so slim, yet very yummy pickens. Not including the daily specials, I counted six items that meet "Detox-Approved" criteria (listed at the end of each review). I am a fan - it is nice to have a place up in Harlem that could easily be in Nolita or the West Village. I can't say I itch to come here - I don't eat a lot of what is offered on the menu, but the things I have had have always been prepared well. I made reservations for three last night. The hostess seated me immediately after checking in. My friend made it a few minutes after I did. The atmosphere was amazing. Rustic decor, awesome music and eclectic vibe. The service is the worst I've ever experienced. First off, the waitress offered me a choice of still or sparkling water without bothering to tell me that there was a charge for the sparkling water. I ended up ordering it, assuming it was complimentary (I've been to other places where it was). It was only when my friend noticed the pricing on the drinks menu that we found out that the water was $7/bottle. Our third party hadn't arrived yet, and the waitress + another gent (a manager maybe?) kept on hounding us about it because they wanted to use the extra table to seat other people. Didn't ask us if we wanted to eat or anything. We eventually told them to take the table away because it was unlikely at this point that the third party was arriving, and the hounding about that extra table was annoying me. So anyway- it took FOREVER for the waitress to come back and get our orders. And then the waitress put our orders on one check when we specified that we wanted separate checks from the first! The only reason that I didn't rate this place one star is because the food is quite delicious. I ended up ordering the truffle mac & cheese, while my friend had the duck confit. My friend really enjoyed her meal, and my mac & cheese was really creamy, really filling, and had a nutty, garlicky quality that was enjoyable. However- the high prices and crap service is NOT worth me making a return trip to this place. read more

More than a year later, we're still very much in love with this restaurant. Even after moving out of the neighborhood, we would travel all the way up here to meet up with friends for brunch (which sometimes leads to dinner). The food is yummy - French Toast is still my brunch of choice here, still better than elsewhere. The service is super friendly and the vibe of the place is just so good and casual. It feels like a big happy family - old Harlem meets new Harlem. What we love is that they don't rush you out of the restaurant. Summed up:: Good food; HORRIBLE SERVICE. This is based on a 1 a week in the winter season (since they opened)... attempted to reinitiate it tonight. I work in the industry, and the inconsistancy of this place will eventually be the death of it... Other then that the seafood risotto is the way to go but according to their interpretation of the health code (which varies week to week) they will not wrap up your seafood left overs because they think it is against code... I also experienced this when I was ordering the item through there ToGo option... Occasionally I assume whoever takes the call "allows" the order be put through and I am able to enjoy the dish in my own home. Other times I get the run around about the health dept... First, I would like to say that everyone was very sweet. It wasn't busy, so every server was around and available to fill our glasses and chat. Right when we sat down, a glass of water was dropped on me. No biggie, it's hot outside and it doesn't stain, honestly not upset. But, as a server myself who usually works brunch, I know if I had spilled something, my restaurant would have handled things a little differently. First, I would have run to hand out napkins and dry off. Yes, they cleaned up, but we sat with no cutlery or napkins for awhile before we asked for new. Secondly, if we mess up, we make up. We asked to start with the Tartine (baguette & jam) and it came out with the Benedict we shared as our meal, again something small, but c'mon. We asked to share the DELICIOUS Cauliflower Gratin with our Benedict, which was not put in .. Then, was forgotten about after we asked for it.. twice. Ok. Now, again, we love this place. We are coming back. And we ordered 3 rounds of brunch drinks and dessert. But.. If I were the server that soaked my customers, or the manager who knew well and good what was going on, I would have bought a round of drinks or SOMETHING. We were not really compensated, one drink out of six were left off-honestly, probably just forgotten-and the cauliflower we begged for wasn't even gifted.. Not an expensive thing to make. I'm learning that the tips I leave on the Yelp app for places right after I experience them really have the most important points you need to know said in a very concise form. For Maison Harlem I wrote: Shell steak. Herb butter. Now. Really can't say much more than that, except I can and that this place is amazing. Longing for good restaurant picks uptown closer to home (that aren't the overplayed Red Rooster), Maison Harlem came in just the nick of time. Adorable French bistro with a super cute, lively bar area. The dining room has a nice mix of tables with side booths with a lovely, maybe sometimes a little too typical, French decor, but it reminds me of Paris and I love it so shut up. Even their uniforms are typical black and white stripes with are adorbs. Have I said how much I love this place? The maitre d' and all the waiters/waitresses I've had are French and have great accents so it's fun to try and practice my rusty 10-year-old francias with them even though they never know what I'm saying but they humor me anyway until I just give up and order in English. Whether I'm celebrating something, want to take friends someplace nice (if they dare take a train uptown instead of making me meet them downtown or to Brooklyn), or I just want a damn good special meal at the end of a tough week, I come here. The shell steak -- that comes with a phenomenal herb butter that just melts all over the huge, perfectly cooked slab of beef (that comes with a side of crispy shoestring fries and a frisee salad) to make a perfect steak frites -- is simply divine. They have a hearty red wine list with a few selections that go perfectly with this. Each waiter I've had has always had a great knowledge of wine pairings, which is always so nice. The white sangria one night was too fruity and a bit off, so I'd just stick with the wines. And although I've normally always gone with the steak, I've also had the salmon, which is so fresh and light and rich at the same time. Comes with a wonderfully flavored ratatouille. I've tried friends' plates who have had the pasta (like the tagliatelle carbonara) and everything has been delicious. Maison Harlem reminds me of this cute outdoor Parisian bistro, which was the first place I ate the second I arrived in La Cite de la Lumiere. I had the steakfrties and it was the best meal I've ever eaten. Maison Harlem has a sliver of outdoor seating on the side of the restaurant; and although the views aren't the same (a still loud, run-down area of Harlem vs. the beautiful tree-lined streets near Place de la Bastille), it's about as close as I can get by going on a 20 block walk instead of an 8 hour flight. This is one of those times where you really want to like a restaurant, but you can't ignore how unsatisfied you are at the end of the meal. We came for Sunday brunch, and were impressed by the cool atmosphere and somewhat serene ambiance of the place. Sadly, the service was apathetic at best. The waiter actually bruskly corrected me on my French pronunciation of my order. Seriously? Casse-toi, idiote! An order of fruit salad-- totally beautiful and delicious fruit salad albeit-- was an astounding $8. My boyfriend ordered the special, which was some kind of pork salami and whole Gerkin pickles on a baguette for $10. No side items, no salad, not even condiments with the sandwich-- no mayo, no mustard, no butter. It was incredibly dry and boring, with the uncut whole pickles falling out all over the place. How un-French like. However, I ordered the smoked salmon eggs benedict and it was absolutely delicious and perfectly portioned. It came with potatoes and a large but somewhat bland side salad. I was really pleased with the eggs, but after seeing the bill, experiencing the lackluster service, and seeing how unsatisfied my boyfriend was with his meal, I was super disappointed. My girlfriend and I had dinner here last Sunday. We recently moved into the neighborhood and we're happy that there are places like this one. There's a bar in the front with the dining area in the back. Very cool decor. Love the antique light bulbs. The guy at the door and the bartender could not have been nicer. We called for an 8:30 reservation and were told that it wasn't necessary. We got there about 9:15 and it was pretty crowded. The hostess told us it would be about a 15 minute wait, and that they don't take reservations for parties under four. A glass of good Malbec is $10, which we enjoyed while we waited. We waited 45 minutes to be seated. Apps: My girlfriend had oysters, which were fine. I had the onion soup, which was good although way too much thyme. The gruyere was very good. We both shared the charcuterie + cheese board, which was disappointing for $26. Only three different cheeses, two of which were rather bland. The meat was just ok. Our mains were shell steak with peppercorn sauce. Good cuts, very good sauce. The french fries were very good. Tasty and not soggy. I think they bake their bread on the premises. It was excellent. Bottle of good domestic Malbec was $40. Service was a slow even after the crowd started to thin out after 10:30. We were seated near the kitchen and servers station and had to keep asking for water. My girlfriend had to ask for her oysters four times. They were sold out of a lot of items. The waitress said it was because of Valentine's Day. What? That was three days earlier. Out the door we paid $270, which is too much for around here. The price plus the slow service is why I'm only giving it three stars. If the pricing was more reasonable and if the service was good, it would be an easy 4 stars. Next, we're going to try the other two bistros in Harlem, Lucienne and Cedric. read more

I've lived across the street for 3 years. I am Asian American, and when I walk by this establishment (which is often, since I live across the street), someone from inside the establishment or from on their patio frequently feels the need to shout "NI HAO" "KONICHIWA" or related ignorant phrases ("soy sauce!" "we have rice here!"). I've come in and eaten breakfast, lunch, and dinner here, have had happy hour here, and I've have had a great meal, but please stop the catcalling from the restaurant. It just happened again, so I'm now compelled to write this review. Come on Maison Harlem. It's 2020. Please stop shouting your ignorance and racism into the world. We were staying nearby at the Aloft hotel and were looking for a place to eat a late dinner. From the outside, the restaurant doesn't look like much, but it goes back far. The walls are decorated with old album covers and the menus are very cool: they are also old album covers. But the food, OMG! We ordered late and the chef was quick getting our food to us. The salmon was perfectly cooked cooked and seasoned. The vegetables were also nicely cooked with a tasty sauce. My wife had a three cheese platter and a salad. The salad was dressed perfectly and the cheese was very tasty. The French speaking staff was very friendly and were delighted to converse with my wife in their native tongue. Would I recommend this restaurant? IN A HEARTBEAT. Go. Eat. You won't be disappointed. read more

I want to give Maison Harlem 5 stars but I just can't. I live near by and it's my go to place in Harlem. The atmosphere is amazing, the music is awesome and the people are wonderful. The food is great, the steaks are to die for, and don't forget the pork chop! My issue is the service. Since I come by myself I tend to sit at the bar. I like to have a couple of drinks then dinner, but the bartenders are horrible. They are always frantic, doing too much and not enough at the same time. I do think it's over priced for a B rating. But it's worth it. They just need to get bartenders who know how to work a restaurant and a bar. read more

What's not to love? This is casual Manhattan dining at its best. Decor -- adorable old town charm, charm and charm though seating is tight. Service -- no complaints and friendly with a French, I think, accent. Food -- Gawd, really good. Everyone at our table, 7 total, loved their entrees -- lamb chops special, salmon, pork chop. Prior attendee recommended the seafood en croute and I will do the same next time minus the mussells shell bits (did not break a tooth fortunately). Yum! Bummed we didn't share or try appetizers. Price -- Of course, the prices are what they are -- $60 each for one cocktail, one wine and one entree each -- and can only sustain a certain clientele. Most of those who have been long-term inhabitants of the surrounding streets can only gawk through the windows. One would love to know what the owners are doing for less well heeled neighbors. Inexcusably bad service. This place is a joke! Don't waste your money! THE SERVICE IS THAT BAD! I'm a server at a very popular restaurant on the upper west side and I can't believe how bad the service was at this place! Who runs this place? NOBODY!!! I can excuse a slow kitchen, not bad service that doesn't even want to serve you or care about what kind of tip they receive. Where's the hospitality? More like Brutality! Generic, awful, receptive, blasting house music circa 1997 with very little if no air conditioning! I felt like I was being tortured! The food was as typical as anything you can get at any French restaurant in NYC that has better service. I really didn't want to tip them yet left a 15% tip because I'm in the business! We picked this place for dinner based on Yelp reviews and we were delighted with our choice. Warm and welcoming the crowd is a mix of generations and ethnicities eating in a very open and funky space that can be a bit cramped and loud. But we had plenty of eye candy to see and easy-to-hear endless conversation with our guests. Menus are inside old album covers and offer pretty much what you'd expect from a bistro. Waiters are friendly and efficient. Potent drinks and a wide selection of wines were available. Rack of lamb special was superb. Hanger steak was cooked to perfection in a red wine reduction. Mussels, offered two ways, were abundant and great tasting. Mushroom risotto with seafood was okay, slightly mushy. Lava cake + ice cream dessert was tiny but yummy. Maison Harlem was a find outside our neighborhood and our usual dining pattern and we plan to return. read more

Pleasant surprise in the rapidly gentrified neighborhood. Greeted by a welcoming staff who made us immediately comfortable, we selected from the option of outside seating (only seating for 2 possible at exterior bistro tables) a big open dining room and a handsome bar. Varied menu and a brunch served all day was appreciate, as food potions were huge and quality excellent. Only drawback was somewhat pricey drinks ($12 Bloody Mary's). I would go back. read more

I love the ambiance of this restaurant. The decor is so breezy and relaxing and the DJ and in house music is complimentary. I like sitting at the bar to order drinks and apps and the bartender is usually attentive and quick. I always get the Tuna Tartar and the Crabcakes. I don't think you can mess that up but they are tasty. On a bad note, I ordered the Truffe Man n Cheese last night and it was sort of cold inside. I still ate it because I never return food and it was pretty dang good dispite the temperature. Still I was a bit disappointed. The hot security guy made up for it though...yummmm. This place is solid, and has a lot of good things going for it. First, the atmosphere it provides is rare and precious in Harlem. It's a nice, cozy restaurant, a great place to relax and share a laugh with friends. The lighting, decor, setup, and general mood make it a great place to be. The food is good. Try the ratatouille side. I had the kale salad and loved it. I tried the mussels, the menguez and one of their seafood main dishes. All delicious, I just don't think it's worth the price that they're charging. You could argue that you're paying extra for the rent, but the waiter asked my party to leave shortly after we finished eating, so that they could seat another group. He didn't offer us dessert or more drinks. It was pretty clear that we weren't welcome to hang out and enjoy the atmosphere. Again, I think this place is a solid choice, and offers a unique experience. But it's definitely not going to be one of my go-tos. read more

I've been to Harlem Maison on numerous occasions since its opening. While I am a huge fan of the food and ambiance, there is plenty of room for improvement in other areas. I can have the Chicken Paillard every night of the week. Its simply two thick slices of chicken breasts lightly fried on a bed of mixed greens. Healthy and filling. The duck leg confit wasn't my favorite due to the sweetness of the sauce but it was edible. The brunch really won me over. Try the eggs nordique. The egg is poached perfectly and the roasted potatoes that come with it are amazing. Now the tough part of the review - Bouncer - I don't know how I feel about there being a big, burly bouncer at the front door. It sends off a pretentious vibe that native Harlem folk hate. And if you don't look like a Becky or a Tom, he is not jumping to open the door for you. Bad Mimosas - While the food was great, the traditional Sunday brunch Mimosa SUCKED!!! Firstly, it was $12 (the same as my entree) and they didn't even use real orange juice; it was some Orange Juice Drink mix. I saw it for my own eyes. Loved this place. So glad it's right around the corner from me. Dishes that I've tried and enjoyed include the seafood pasta and burger. If you're looking for a good appetizer to split over a bottle of wine then you should try the mussels. The servings are very generous. Will keep coming back to try out more dishes. read more
