This place is phenomenal! My friend insisted we travel from Manhattan for dinner here. I was reluctant, since it seemed so far, but I'm so glad we did! Yelp claims this place is Spanish, but our waiter told us they're a Colombian-Italian fusion restaurant. We ordered the house strawberry rhubarb margaritas, and while I wouldn't call these drinks margaritas, I loved it. We ordered loads of food: the gnocchi (excellent!), the pork belly (divine), the morsels (yumm), the stracciatella with dulce de leche (okay---this was kind of weird. It's mozzarella based, so it's mostly savory), but most importantly we ordered the burrata negra, burrata swimming in squid ink. Oh my god. Oh my god. It's amazing. I don't get this place. U walk in and sit down, then they tell you there are no menus because it changes daily so you have to look at a chalkboard across the room to see the items (super annoying when you're a table of 7). The menu is also hard to distinguish which items are which and what is included in them. They said its Eco friendly and laziness but it feels more like the latter bcuz it's very annoying as a customer to not have a menu. Server was a very nice dude. It was very hot, the AC was not on point I was breaking a sweat most of the meal and my friends were complaining. The prices were alarmingly high for bushwick. I got $18 gnocchi which included 9 gnocchi. That's $2 for a ball of average very average gnocchi (#math). Also not enough food for a hungry person. I told the waiter about all this, not that I expected anything to happen it's just kind of the DNA of the establishment I guess, but he told me the prices were high because of fresh local ingredients and didn't discuss why the portions were not sufficient (I shudder to think what the appetizers are like..) Also no response for why it's so hot in here for a "nice" restaurant. He brought us desserts (aka a singular chocolate truffle for each person) and then told us they can only take 4 cards to split bill (which was fine but kind of annoying that they wouldn't accommodate if it were). Anyway, clearly never coming back but not terrible place if money isn't a problem and you don't mind an establishment that feels very opportunitstic and corner cutting. I walked into Maite last night, looking forward to objectively considering the atmosphere, service, food, etc. which are relevant to the consumer experience. I'll begin with some observations, that adhere strictly to Yelp's guidelines, as my now-removed review of The Wheelhouse apparently did not: The furniture is primarily made of wood; surely a positive attribute. Fellow patrons spoke to one another in moderate tones. This is preferable to many people screaming or, conversely, many people whispering inaudibly. A chalkboard clearly displays menu items. I'd like to share more of these pleasant elements, but as I scanned the menu, noting that drinks are fairly priced, my mind began to wander. I couldn't help but think about how short-sighted we are to judge our surroundings by the most trivial of details. Does anyone have even the slightest conception of the drink specials offered at the Cabaret Voltaire or the Mudd Club? Could anyone possibly express the slightest concern about the quality of the wait staff at Cafe des Artistes or at Gordon Matta-Clark's Food? Certainly not! The bars, the restaurants, the coffee shops that have mattered most to our culture are the ones where the artists, poets and philosophers have found their inspiration. As I noticed that the candles on each table were a pleasant flourish, a sadness weighed on my heart. I felt that I couldn't completely revel in their dim glow. For I know that I live in a neighborhood with unprecedented resources, a neighborhood that could be overflowing with creativity. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of artists and writers out eating and drinking every night. Sometimes we gather as crowds, sometimes we wander alone, dispersed throughout Bushwick. Alongside of Maite's enjoyable collection of classic and contemporary tracks, creating a lively but laid-back environment, there is always a chorus of voices yearning to speak, waiting for their turn to shout into the megaphone as they stand upon the hypothetical soapbox. But alas, we are forced to remain silent. For if the endless clatter of the digital crowd doesn't overwhelm our voices, the corporate regulatory bodies, the Yelp Support teams of the world, police every word and action that fails to conform to their desired affect. Had my experiences at The Wheelhouse or Maite been compromised by the shrieks of a nearby child or the shrill exchanges amongst a gaggle of early-20's post-sorority girls, surely Yelp Support would encourage their audience to consider these incidental factors in assessing the merits of the establishment. But should the bar or restaurant foster an environment where one's thoughts are left to wander, freed from the distractions of the surrounding world, as Maite does in the most lovely of ways, we are apparently expected to keep the establishment's brilliance as our own little secret. There are several plants and a bookshelf containing vintage paperbacks. These items contribute to a certain je ne sais quoi. I want nothing more than to express my excitement over the revelation that these establishments now exist in Bushwick. I pine for a medium that allows me to share the bolt of inspiration that struck me as I sat with my first muse, The Wheelhouse, that struck me again as I sat there last night contemplating the full implications of Maite. But apparently I must confine my thoughts to the menu items, price points and decor. Heaven forbid we consider any grander aesthetic pursuits! The polenta coque is delicious. read more

I had hope for Maite. We came by earlier in the day and met one of the owners and their mom, and took a look at the space, which was very cool. They seemed really nice and we were really excited to check out the resto later that evening for dinner. We came back around 8 to find plenty of seats and very friendly servers. Unfortunately, the food and the service was inconsistent. Nothing stood out after the meal. We appreciated a very good choice on the wine list: a nice Rose under 40. But we had to ask for napkins and bread after the olives arrived. The bread was two tiny pieces of toast. Calamari was ok, It wasn't hot. Gnocchi was very good. Lambchops were good. Pizzetta was good as well, but oily. At these prices, you can have a wonderful meal in the neighborhood that will make you want to go back as soon as you walk out the door. read more

Came here for my boyfriend's birthday dinner as we were very curious what Colombian-European influenced cuisine was all about (being Colombian ourselves) Since it was just 2 of us we could not make a reservation but arrived at about 9pm for dinner and were quickly seated in the last available table for 2. There isnt an actual menu that is passed out, the menu is written on a black board as well as the drinks. The waitress explained the top items were appetizers, the middle items were shareable tapas and towards the bottom there were entrees and sides. We decided to order a few things: pork belly, beef tongue empanadas, burrata negra, the bass and ravioli foie gras all to share, we also ordered some bread because it is not complimentary. The empanadas were the best dish we ate. although I was hesitant of the beef tongue, the texture wasnt much different than a "bistec" and flavor was delicious. Each order brings 2 so we each had one. they were very hot so I had to cut it in half to cool it down and when I did, it fell apart which is understandable. My only compliment would be I wish the masa of the empanadas was a bit crunchier to avoid them falling apart so easily. My pig loving boyfriend was mainly excited for the pork belly unfortunately alot of it was pure fat that we had to cut off so we basically eat only half of it. I would recommend cutting the fat off. I know all pork belly brings fat which my boyfriend enjoys eating regardless but this was way too much, so much that even he didnt eat it. Disappointing. I am not a big fan of squid ink so I did not try the burrata negra but he said it was pretty good and did not taste too fishy. I also did not try the ravioli foie gras but he mentioned that the first few bites werent anything to rave about. It also had a strong smell that wasnt too enjoyable. The burrata did bring an order of bread so I wish the waitress would have mentioned that to stop us from ordering the separate order of bread we placed... We pretty much ended up with 2 orders of bread when this would've been avoided if she would've told us the burrata brought bread. We shared the sea bass and that was decent. I definitely have had better sea bass elsewhere so again, nothing to rave about. The atmosphere is nice and romantic and I definitely enjoyed the old school salsa that brings you back to Saturday mornings when your mom would be cleaning the house but unfortunately the food was not worth the travel to Bushwick for. read more

Had an all around fantastic first experience with this place. It just opened so it is brand new, and my girlfriend and I ate here for dinner on the second night of their opening. We started with the brussel sprouts appetizer and it was perfect, tons of flavor and a great portion size for two people to split. I had the pappardelle and pork shoulder for my entree and she had the burger. Both of these meals were just a delight. my noodles were perfect and the pork was prepared very well. The burger was very large in the best way possible. There is a "crispy egg" on top of the patty that makes a mess to eat but is definitely worth it. We had a nice dessert to split too and two drinks each from their wine and beer selection that was modest but I don't really think that is a bad thing since all the options were very good. I'd struggle to find something about this place that I didn't enjoy on our first visit, the decor is very tasteful to the place as well, lots of mismatching tables and chairs add a nice feel. read more

This is an amazing spot to get yummy and well thought out organic Colombian food! What I found fascinating about Maite is the knowledge and effort they put into the food. Just ask any of the staff there. I did and felt more informed about the food I was eating and where it was coming from (also why it might be more pricey). They import most of the main ingredients from select places in Europe! For example, I got the pork belly and it came from a Berkshire breed pig which is a rare British pig (I learned that last night). Don't listen to any of the negative reviews on here. This is one restaurant that doesn't deserve anything less than four stars. My wife and I have frequented this place since it opened and have never had anything short of an amazing meal. The food, the service, and the drinks never disappoint us. If you get bad service here, it's probably because you're an asshole, not your waiter or waitress. They're also very kid friendly, we tend to go before the dinner rush with our three year old, and the staff never makes us feel like we're not welcome, which actually happens from time to time elsewhere. Maite has a warm and welcoming atmosphere no matter if you have kids or not, and the music is always on point. As for the food? I typically hate olives, with a passion, but Maite's olive plate has converted my taste buds. I highly recommend getting them as a bar snack or appetizer. I've honestly never had a bad meal here. Hats off to the chef and her staff! If you're a fan of savory comfort food, you can't go wrong. If I saw a Cat Turd sandwich on the menu, I have enough faith in the chef that I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy eating that shit! We once got a blueberry fiddlehead salad that my wife still can't stop talking about almost a year later. You can ask her what I got her for Christmas a year ago, and she'll take a few minutes to remember, but if you ask her about that blueberry fiddlehead salad? She will go into great detail with sincere passion. It was pretty amazing! We've had so many memorable meals here. In the ten years we've been living in the neighborhood, we've seen an influx of restaurants and people that have changed the face of Bushwick. Maite honestly is the best addition amongst the others. The waitress came right away to tell us about their chalkboard menus. From there, the service was all downhill. We had no plates or utensils for our appetizer. Then a runner took away our plates and asked us if we were all done with our meal before we had gotten our entrees. I like the cozy, eclectic, old world decor of this place. The kitchen knows what they're doing. The interesting selections on the relatively small (smart) menu were nicely prepared. I got a regular margarita for 8 bucks, not too strong but not weak either. Worth it for 8 bucks I guess. Came with salt and a lime. We both shared the beef empanitas appetizer. You get two empanitas for 8 bucks which I thought was a good deal considering how delicious they were. They were hard and crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside and the beef was super tender and not fatty. Came with a side of the cilantro based spicy dressing, yum! Then for my meal, I got the gnocchi for 21 bucks. It's expensive cause they're homemade and they were good! My boyfriend got the burger which comes with fresh mozzarella and an egg on it, for 15 bucks. Doesn't come with fries unless you pay an extra 6 bucks. The burger was amazing tho. The meat used was probably the best burger meat I have ever tasted. My boyfriend compared it to good quality steak. Probably worth trying. It was very dense meat and I found it filling. We ordered the lamb chop small plate, an entree of the black squid and risotto, the soft shell crab and the caramel cream with ancho Reyes. The lamb chop and the black squid were both really, really tasty and well done, but each one left a slightly charred aftertaste. Not terrible, but enough to be noticeable. The soft shell crab - no complaints! The potato salad was delish and they served it with some kind of herbs and tangerine dressing which just tasted super fresh and really interesting. The dessert - oh my god - I have never had anything like it in my life. It had this little trickle of ancho chile liqueur on top of this amazing custard and caramel sauce. Finally, they gave us these amazing (AND complimentary!) little dark chocolate truffles with fennel sugar. All in all, great vibe, great drinks. Was probably the most flavorful steak I have ever had! Tender, Juicey, Seasoned and cooked to PERFECTION! I am an A1 girl....no need for that when you have a steak from Ella! It came with an Arepa and melted Farmers Mozzarella, a bite of Heaven! I love some veggies so I ordered the Seasonal Carrots. So glad I did! Tri-colored roasted carrots, and they were glazed but not sticky or sweet, natural carrot sweetness. There was some delicious sauce that we dip up with crusty garlic bread! I am not strict, but the only thing to order is arepas. The menu is on the wall and is not descriptive at all. For example it doesn't say that collard greens are cooked with pork belly. My friend ordered a burger medium well and it was dry and burned. The wait staff was okay and deleted the greens from the bill. If you have any dietaty restrictions beware. A friend recently moved to the neighborhood, so Maite was new to us when we went for dinner on a Saturday. The atmosphere is at once cozy and welcoming. The ghost-town-like lack of people only served to add to the saloon-esque feel. From the minute we walked in, we were seized upon by the darling servers, implored to sit anywhere we pleased (our party of three, never ones to miss an opportunity, took the biggest table by the window, of course), and never without full glasses of water. In fact, the two waiters on duty that night had so few customers (we were told business has been slow since the the inception of the L's weekend hiatus :/) that we were, at any given point, in deep conversation with them about the quality of the food, the presentation of the menu, our hydration needs, the feng shui of the tables... In other words, right on the cusp of being attentive to a fault, but understandably so. We had the chicken empanaditas with homemade aji, the chorizo croque (Spanish pizza), and shrimp and ramp pesto bucatini. All top-notch, all fairly priced. Still think about them sometimes in the night. Portions were on the smaller side but filled us right up. On October 15, 2021 I went to Maite Restaurant with my date. We ordered the Pork Belly (chicharron) with Arepita at a cost of $19.00. To my surprise a large piece of fat with a arepa on top arrived. I did not eat it - it was not attractive to look at. It was semi-cooked and the top pork skin was not crispy. If you eat this dish you will definitely would need to go to the hospital with stomach issues. Chicharron is deep fried pork skin that is very crispy and there is no fat on the pork skin. The fat on pork belly is usually discarded by butchers and not sold to the public. This dish should be taken off the menu. read more

Probably could be a five star place, but I think my tastes are a bit too pedestrian to get the most out of this place. I got the burger, which I loved in theory. When I sliced into the egg on top and the yolk ran all over the meat I thought I saw god. And they use steak trimmings in it, so it's not your average burger. But alas, my love for the simple perfection that is the burger at Onderdonk and sons is unwavering. (And about half the price!) Nice atmosphere though, good servers, and you can tell they use high quality ingredients and put thought into their dishes. I'd be interested in trying the lamb, fish, or maybe pasta. The menu is scribbled on a giant chalkboard (that is hard to make out from your seat) which leads to you getting certain items suggested and explained in detail. Handheld menus would help a lot since most of the dishes are so different and complex. We had the shrimp in broth (which was good but under seasoned), the burrata in squid ink (which was very messy and also begging for some salt and pepper) and finally the gnocchi which was good. One of the best meals of my life. Went with a girlfriend saturday night, immediately felt at home. Cozy atmosphere, friendly service - one of the bartenders came to our table to just describe all of the dishes to us in beautiful detail, made every bite more special. We balled out and feasted with the Fennel with seared avocado, rib eye burger (OMG), swordfish, and empanadas. Everything was amazing; wonderful balance of creative flavors and textures supported by quality, sustainable ingredients. Drinks were excellent, the Maite cocktail was delicious - and their house cider had a perfect balance of tannins (my friend is a cider buff reports - not too sweet). Overall a little pricier than most, but if you appreciate quality it's well worth the cost. Definitely will be going back to try more of their new dishes to come! So happy this place is in Bushwick!
