We loved our meal here. The server was super friendly and helpful :) we all really enjoyed our food and it was almost too much to finished but we were famished after a day of walking around dt. This is more authentic Mexican food than you might be used to be I absolutely love the fresh tortillas and corn based dishes. They said that Their dishes aren't from one part of Mexico but a combination of all the different regions. I really enjoyed the catch of the day and the margarita and guac. Guys thought their carne asada was pretty good and mom liked the mole too! Would love to come back and try more items, the interior is bright clean festive and still modern. My family and I stopped in Maiz Molino yesterday after being turned away from another eatery that didn't have any openings and I must say....what a perfect blessing in disguise... I am born and raised in Los Angeles aka I've grown up eating the best Mexican food you can get without actually being in Mexico.....until Maiz Molino. We walked in and I will say the atmosphere of the restaurant didn't exactly match the food pictures I saw on Yelp so at first I was a little bit apprehensive, but then....we met our server Matt who was so kind and patient walking us through the menu and telling us about their approach to Mexican food. We were there around brunch time, but asked if there was anything else we'd be able to order off the brunch menu and Matt was so awesome and asked the chefs what they had in the back that we could order that wasn't on the brunch menu....I got the chicken tinga that wasn't on the brunch menu and let me tell you...... Maiz Molino served me the BEST chilaquiles I have EVER had....by FAR!! The Sauce?...incredible! Tangy and sweet and just enough heat. The chips? PERFECTLY wet on the outside and still crisp on the inside. The egg? PERFECTLY fried with a runny yolk. The tinga? AMAZING! The chicken fell apart and was smoky and tangy from the sauce. My mother in law got the Pozole.....not surprisingly the best pozole ive ever had also. It was thick and rich with tons of flavor and the meat just melted in your mouth. Everyone elses dishes were incredible and you MUST get the horchata latte. I got it iced and everyone else got it hot. We all loved it. My only issue with this place is there isn't one in Los Angeles and now I have to wait until my next trip to Seattle to have it again which I am very sad about. Very underwhelming food given the reviews to date for this place. Going in I had some high expectations. The ratings are great, the menu clearly was not run-of-the-mill Mexican American offerings, and the interior looked pretty fun and inventive. I'm a native Los Angelino who has been living in Seattle off and on since 2009, and in general things have improved substantially for Mexican eats in the PNW over time so every time a new Mexican place opens up that people make note of I always take time to visit. Upon entry, I started to have a bit of a concern. I have this food law that goes something like this: the more a restaurant explains their process around their food, the more underwhelming it's likely to be. Most fine dining and awesome eats places just let the food do the talking for itself. The nice people at Maiz explained to me twice about their emphasis on corn, how they source the corn, and clearly it was important because the corns were displayed tastefully near the bar. Hmmmm.... Sadly my skepticism was confirmed when the main entrees were received. Naturally I had to try the Carne Asada and sadly while it was cooked well, it was nearly absent of flavor. I seriously could not taste any seasoning or marination whatsoever. Worse off was the short rib dish which not only had a similar absence of flavor but also was about the toughest serving of short rib I've ever had in my life; short rib is supposed to fall off the bone not compliment the bone for added mass for striking an assailant with it. Honestly I was pretty shocked by how bland the food was and it teleported me way back to that first year of 2009 in Seattle where the locals seemingly had never heard of a chile before and insisted on finishing entrees with cole slaw. Bummer. Maybe it was an off night. Everything else was quite nice: the service, the space, the location - it was just too bad about the food. If you're looking for something less Mexican American and more regional to Mexico I'd say visit the venerable La Carta de Oaxaca in Ballard instead for now. read more

I don't have any "instagram worthy" photos, whatever that means, to post because I was too busy enjoying the food! Every dish was delicious, including the tortilla chips. Home made, with soul, the food at Maiz Molino surpasses anything offered in the city of Seattle. Hey, we were in Ciudad de Mexico in May, CDMX to you trendoids, and Maiz Molino rivaled the food we ate in the capital. No, it isn't Michelin quality dining in the Pujols or Quintonil manner, but for down home cooking, Maiz Molino rivals anything I ate in Mexico, and it is the best Mexican restaurant in Seattle Matt was our server, and he was as gracious as when I met him at Maiz at the market. Maybe because it's a bit too pricey for a daily office lunch. I got the watermelon agua Fresca (4/5) and tlacoyo with tinga pollo (5/5). Maíz molino on 6th street is quickly becoming not only my favorite Mexican restaurant but one of my overall favorite restaurants. Everything about this place is amazing! The staff, the drinks, the service, the food, the hot sauces, the ambiance is all top notch. The nixtamalization process on all their corn is done by them and wow can you tell the difference between these tortillas and store bought. The shrimp gordita is a perfect dish. The corn tortilla is beautifully chewy and yet tender with wonderful color, the beans are smooth and flavorful, the shrimp are perfectly cooked and seasoned, the pickled red onion gives the perfect tang and the cheese on top just adds a level of richness that is heavenly. Top that all off with a house made salsa that is made with three different types of peppers. The staff here is just amazing. From the moment you walk in you're greeted with a warm smile and a quick hello! Angie, the owner, is so incredibly accommodating and visible. She seems to be involved in every aspect of the business here which, I personally love to see. Overall, I plan on going back to maíz over and over again. Came for lunch, ordered Pozole chip and salsa and a Margarita. Worst chips and salsa I've ever had which is an odd thing to be horrible. Watched the Pazole sit under the heat lamp for literally 15 mins while the focused on to go orders. Margarita for 16 dollars was average at best, pozole was ok. Went here over the weekend got takeout and the food was excellent! The menu selections were unique compared to other Mexican food establishments I have ever encountered. The corn risotto was especially delicious as indicated by other reviewers, but was surprise me was the freshness and acidity of the tomato salad. I've seen Maiz at Pike Place Market but I haven't stopped in before. I noticed another one opened up in SLU and I had to go in! Food: I got veggie tacos and they were BOMB! Tbh $18 for tacos is a little out of reach of me in this economy but dang these were so good. Bell peppers, mushroom, onion, and chickpeas. Also the salsa slaps. Ambiance: The place was really quiet during lunch, but I think it's because people don't know it's here yet. HIGHLY recommend going now. The interior is beautiful and bright. There is a decent amount to seating as well so you could bring a good party. Service: fast, nice, friendly. The folks at Maiz were great. This was a large portion for one so I recommend going with a group to share. At $18 for one dish and the entrees at $28+, I do think that this joint is priced very highly. Inflation and economy is definitely tough so if you you aren't conscious about where your extra dollar goes, this would be the best place to go. I do think that they probably treat their employees really well due to the price point so this might be attractive to people who work nearby and make the big bucks. Long gaps between engagements and hard to get attention. Chips needed salt and the guacamole needed heat. Drinks were too sweet and tasted artificial. Food was good and well presented. Good flavors but each dish lacked something and sides were small. Must note their Tortillas were excellent. After we were done it took 40 minutes until we finally paid and left without the dessert we ordered as it never came and we grew tired of sitting on hard chairs with our plates still on the table in front of us. We had a great time here! The food was delicious! Everything on the menu looked good so we asked our server to give us recommendations and they did not disappoint. We enjoyed the Chile au Jus Costilla (braised short rib), Zarandeado (fish), and the Borrego Tatemado (lamb barbacoa). Everything came with lots of different sauces to add and tortillas. We wanted dessert, but of the two desserts we wanted, one was out and the other had just come out of the oven but turned out raw in the center so the chef couldn't serve it.
