Walked in off the street on our way to an afternoon matinee. Great find! Had the pulled carnitas tacos which were incredibly moist and tender. The ability to put whatever you want on your tacos (a la Chipotle) is a big plus. Price was very fair for NYC ($12.95 for 3 tacos), especially considering the quality and quantity of the food. I could be wrong, but it looked like 3 was the minimum order for tacos. My wife could only eat 2 but I gladly scarfed down her extra grilled chicken taco (which was also very good). Dining area was nice and clean; rest rooms also very clean. Staff members were exceptionally nice and quick. Would definitely go back! (NOTE: I award stars on the basis of what it's trying to be. I had read great reviews of this restaurant on Yelp, and I wasn't disappointed when I went there. I ordered the naked burrito with grilled chicken, and the portion was generous + the food was so fresh and delicious! This is a great, convenient and relatively quick place to eat if you're near the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The restaurant is clean simple and most importantly the food actually taste amazing! When I tell it's really good and tasty it's because it is! You can tell the meat has been resting with the seasoning for a while because it tastes so good). Their sauces are to die for! Though the staff was polite, they ushered us through the line very quickly without going through all the options...so we missed out on some essentials like sour cream. We tried the naked bowl with brown rice, beans, shredded chicken, most of the toppings, and salsa roja & verde. We found the flavors lacking and VERY salty. The meat was decent, but the brown rice was undercooked and crunchy. We found ourselves staring longingly at the Chipotle across the street. After reading various reviews, I decided to try Blue Maiz out and I am so happy I did. I walked in around noon to a very small line and happy workers. Plenty of tables were open too. The Naked Burrito is fresh and delicious and the chips are crispy, thick, and hold up to scooping. I'm highly impressed by the large lime I got, too. Often it's so tiny but I'm pretty sure I got a whole one. Price is good for the area. I've already recommended it to my coworkers. I will definitely be back! read more

When it comes to enchiladas, I consider myself a concierge. May I say, BEST enchiladas in town! Everything is just right, the sauce, the amount of filling, the rice and pico that comes on the side. Hands down the best enchiladas I've had. I order from Blue Maiz often while at work, and after telling my coworkers about them, they order from them now as well. Their guac is also pretty good, and I enjoyed the chips with chipotle crema dip. This place is definitely a perfect substitute for Chipotle, and after I had Blue Maiz I haven't been back to Chipotle since. pretty decent all in all ordered a 3 set tacos w pork, salsa verde and pico de gallo, which was relatively good. meat was slightly flavourless, but the toppings made up for it to a degree. i only got one corn tortilla per taco, which, if you have ever eaten tacos in mexico, you know is not very convenient, as the whole thing will crumble from the moisture of the fillings the restaurant was short of a few drinks listed on the menu, so instead of a squirt (don't chuckle) or a pepsi, i had to make do with a grapefruit jarrito, which was still very tasty though i got a little bite from my girlfriend's enchiladas with rice and beans too, and although the enchiladas were great, the side was slightly bland and flavourless the staff was mediocre - can't complain about the cook, but i have some minor complaints about the cashier (who i assume might have been the owner? i dont know for sure) i spoke to her in spanish (which she spoke fluently), but for some reason she kept switching to english.. on top of that, she did not seem very friendly. might have just had a bad day, but who knows the prices weren't too bad for midtown standards, but could also be a little cheaper - 3 tacos were about $12 and the 6 churros went for about a dollar a piece. the churros themselves were very good though, i can't complain - some of the best i've had, even compared to the ones you get in mexico glad to see a taqueria owned and run by actual mexicans though. the recipes and preparation methods are authentic, just as they would be in mexico, although you can tell from the moment you walk in that it's at least partially catered towards the western audience. the background music was very pleasant and not obnoxious like in many other places a little thing to add though, is that it seemed like one of my friends who i went with was not able to use his yelp coupon, although i dont know the full context to this in the end, the visit was definitely worth it. there were some drawbacks, but it wouldn't stop me from coming back, seeing as this currently stands as my favourite mexican restaurant south of harlem so far if i could give a 4.5/5, i would, but since i wouldn't necessarily consider it a flawless experience, i will have to make do with a 4/5 muchas gracias compas read more

Ordered the steak salad here as takeout. Overall it was average, flavors were okay and steak was cooked well. Honestly reminded me of a Chipotle bowl, but slightly better as I was able to get better cheese (cotija) which I had to pay a $1 for. Wouldn't write it off from ever trying again....will probably try the tacos. read more

We were on vacation from Cali and happened to bump into this place only a few blocks away from Times Square. It's a small place in between so many big stores and shops and it did not disappoint! VEGETARIAN REVIEW: I came here a few weeks ago to see all the Christmas in New York things and let me tell you-- this food is SO good!!!!!! I got a burrito (and they include guacamole in the price, without you having to ask- so yes get the guac!). The food was so good- all of the ingredients were really fresh. I was so impressed with the quality of the food & the service was so great as well- I was met with nothing but smiles!! While I was there, there was a homeless person who came in to ask us for money. He went table to table, but then came to the counter to ask the employees for food. They store offered him food (how nice is that?), and the man ate some food and then when he thought no one was looking, reached in the tip jar to steal money! So, all of the male employees in the restaurant came together to kick him out, and the one guy even grabbed a plastic tray to shield the customers to ensure hey wouldn't be disturbed. I felt bad for the homeless guy because he was clearly mentally disturbed, but I was impressed wit the quick action from the store. I really REALLY enjoyed my visit here (oh did I mention the bathrooms were spotless?) and will be back the next time I'm in New York. If you like chipotle, you'll love this place- it's even better!!! read more

Loved the bowl I chose last time. Ingredients are so fresh and tasty. I would never eat at Chipotle again unless...I had a huge discount! Seriously though this place needs to open up everywhere, it's so good compared to other similar chains... Portions are generous. I could not finish my food. Blue Maiz has the same concept as Chipotle, but in no way is it similar in flavor. They have more options and it tastes more authentic. The Mexican crema is rich and so good. I hate shredded cheese so I normally don't add any, but they have cotija cheese and it really adds so much flavor. read more

Ordered deliver via Seamless last night! Food was delivered in about 30 minutes so not bad at all. I got the chicken menuzada naked bowl with black beans and salsa verde. The bowl itself was good! BUT I didn't realize I had to write in the instructions that I want lettuce added on too (on top of the rice). If you don't, it comes just as the description states with no veggies. The bowl was satisfying to the point where I was full but not grossly bloated. *thumbs up* I don't go to chipotle or dos toros so I really can't give a good comparison of the three but this place is not bad! Sure it's not super authentic Mexican food but it'll do :) Oh! So something super awesome about the delivery...they actually knocked the door. The 10% check-in discount definitely didn't hurt, although prices were reasonable. Choice of salsas was great, larger than a certain franchise located across the street. The franchise across the street has a certain distinct flavor that I don't like, and Blue Maize just tasted like its ingredients, the way I'd expect it to. I was in NEW YORK CITY and stumbled upon this place. It was around lunch time and there was a line out the door. I quickly turned to YELP and read some of the reviews and said what the heck, imma give it a whirl. And let me tell you, I am sure glad I did! Although the line was out the door, the service was pretty fast. The concept puts you in the mind of chipotle which ironically was right across the street with no line. I choose rice, chicken, beans and veggies which was all topped off with salsa and sour cream. I also grabbed some street corn. I don't know what they did to their food but the chicken was well seasoned and that street corn.....oh my it was so good!! This place is legit! Not too far from Times Square, it is a nice hole in the wall. Prices are reasonable and the servers are friendly. My ONLY gripe is I wish they offered self serve fountain drinks. You have to pay a $1 for a refill. However, it was no big deal. I'm not going to tell you that I went for a 2nd visit before leaving.......... read more

From the minute you walk in you realize this is a Chilpolte offshoot. I'm surprised to say this place is equal to or better than Chilpolte. We had two naked burritos which contained fresh tasting ingredients and huge portions. Their seasoning seems more refined than Chipotle and the quality of ingredients is equal. The price point is good as well. Service was friendly. We had a carnitas and shredded beef naked burritos. Both highly recommended. They offer regular burritos,tacos,enchiladas and salads. I got dinner to go here with my husband on a Friday night. We're both vegetarians, and each got a burrito. It was nice that we were able to get them custom-made, right before our eyes, to our exact preferences. The standard vegetarian burrito comes with rice, beans, grilled peppers and onions, pico de gallo, corn salad, shredded cheese and guacamole - with HEFTY scoops of each so your burrito will probably explode if you try to eat it with your hands. Even my husband, who teases me for eating everything with utensils, asked for a knife and fork for his meal. He got the standard and loved it - he really liked the corn salad and the guacamole in particular, which is impressive because he tends to be picky about avocado dishes. I got a modified version - I asked for just one scoop of brown rice (they usually give two), black beans, just a little bit of the peppers and onions, no corn salad because it's a bit too sweet for me, pico de gallo, cheese, and I got the guacamole on the side so my burrito would still be warm when I ate it. The service is really great, very nice and accommodating to every modification request, so I liked that a lot. And the food was just really, really good. The brown rice has a little chopped onion in it, making it extra flavorful and tasty, and everything was fresh and really properly seasoned - I usually have to put salt and pepper on everything! I have to agree with my husband on the guacamole too, it's very bright and flavorful, with the right citrusy acidity and really fresh, delicious chunks of avocado. The restaurant is still pretty new, but they're already doing things right, and I hope in the future that they'll expand the vegetarian options, maybe with grilled tofu or mushrooms. Blue Maiz is a great addition to midtown west! Super fast, super fresh burritos and Mexican salads. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu; it's all pretty satisfying, although I do highly recommend the chicken menuzada- it's bomb. Burritos are the size of your head and THEN some. Prices are good for the area. Ordering during lunchtime can be slow, but that's midtown for ya. Delivery is quick and accurate. Guacamole is fresh and yummy. Great option right across the street from Chipotle with a similar menu style. I got the vegetarian (onions and peppers, guac, corn salad as the meat) salad and was happy with the quality of the ingredients. The star of the show for me was the guac and salsa verde. The salsa verde had a nice kick to it but was very flavorful and acted as a great dressing for the salad. I will easily be back in the future to try more! read more
