This place is like a healthier alternative to chipotle (taste wise in my opinion). I stopped by here for lunch. It is spacious and have a good amount of seating. They offer burrito, nachos, tacos, quesadilla, naked burrito, and salad. They have grilled chicken, pork, beef, and vegetarian as meat options. They have 4 types is salsa. I asked the staff what the differences in salsa are but he did not respond to me. I ordered the vegetarian burrito with lettuce, corn salad, cheese, white rice and salsa roja. The burrito was pretty decent. I like their guacamole. The size of the burrito is like the size of a chipotle burrito. Good for 1 person. I'll probably come back and try their quesadilla. I don't fine many places that has "make your own" quesadillas. The soft tacos looked pretty small so I wouldn't order it if you're hungry. read more

Blue Maiz is one of my favorite, authentic Mexican spots in the heart of Midtown. With all of these chain Mexican, grab and go type spots popping up (Chipotle, Dos Toros, etc.), It's great to have an authentic style cuisine. In the past, I have ordered chicken and steak quesadillas as well as chicken tacos, burritos and bowls. Their meats taste amazing - grilled to perfection. They make a to die for guacamole to top it off. I always top my order off with guac and chips. Their food is moderately priced based on the location and surrounding competitors. Typically, lunch for me is north of $10 and south of $15 depending on what I order. On a rare occasion, I will order a quesadilla and it will be sloppy - meaning it is dripping from the ingredients (from the onions and peppers). This generally happens when they're short handed, but it would never stop me from going back! And, on top of that, they have such a friendly staff. The woman that works on Saturdays at the register is such a kind soul. She is very helpful and always in a good mood. I definitely recommend Blue Maiz for authentic Mexican cuisine! read more

I come here for the chicken tortilla soup ($6.80). It comes with nachos. It's very flavorful with a nice spice to it. In it, there are huge chunks of chicken and corn. I really recommend it. I've had hits and misses with the tacos- sometimes the pork was very oily etc. I find it a little disappointing you have to buy 3 tacos as sometimes if just like 1 or 2 as a snack. This was definitely a good lunch, but hard to judge overall based on what I ordered. So this review is really for the salad I purchased and the ease of picking up a digital order. I went to Blue Maiz during lunch to pick up takeout. I used the Ritual app, which was great because when I arrived my name was on an iPad and I was able to bypass the line and was in and out in less than 45 seconds. For the brief time I was there, the staff was very friendly and the inside appeared to be very clean. For my meal I got a salad and added guac and cheese. It's hard to tell this is a salad, a better description would be a burrito bowl with a lettuce base. I like that it offers a choice of sauces, but I think I should have ordered in person as opposed to through the Ritual app for my first purchase, because it was a little confusing as to what the salad came with as a base, vs what I needed to ask for as an add-on, however this is no fault of the restaurant and more my own issue ha-ha. The salad itself (or burrito bowl with lettuce) was really tasty, but very heavy. I got it with grilled chicken which was cooked well. The best tasting item in the salad was the corn. It was chunks of grilled corn cut straight from the cobb, as opposed to just individual kernels, and I really enjoyed that. read more

This breaks my heart to say but this place is ok, yes better than chipotle! For sure, just not exactly the authentic Mexican food they promise! Let's start with what they do very well. First the space and atmosphere is nice and welcoming pretty good layout and nice location. Definitely pulls your attention with all the signs and advertising! They have a lot of balls to have the same business model as chipotle and have a store right in front of them as well good move! I got a chicken Naked burrito which is just a bowl. The chicken was moist and tender and was very flavorful best part of the whole meal. Now the downsides..... The rice is a choice between white and brown and honestly I have to give credit to Dos toros as they're rice is the closest to authentic I've ever seen in Manhattan. But the white one I got here was tasteless and bland. They make you pick your protein which I said was my favorite part but once you get to toppings they're very underwhelming. You've got the pico de Gallo which was barley visible in the bowl as I barely got a decent scoop and the a corn salsa that tasting like pineapple. Is it's called corn salsa I want for corn to be what I taste not some unsuspecting fruit! Then the salsas are Interesting and there I say lacking. Usually green, red and The only one that was unique and not that bad was the guajillo one. To me they needed some more salt and bit of depth. Lastly they charge extra for guac which is fine but for cheese! Now that's a crime. The choice was between fake Mexican blend of cheddar and what looked like mozzarella or traditional cotija cheese. Why give to pick between nasty low quality cheese and something that will taste good why not just include the price in the bowl. A decadent southwest mix in place. Compared to Chipotle its a lot more greasy but still very tasty. The food here is good, though I wouldn't say its better then Chipotle. Rather its just different, in that they offer a different variety of foods and the spiciness/sauce is up one notch more then at Chipotle. I like to get the blue corn tacos here as its the main gimmick. The tacos I always get are very messy so I have to be in a certain mood to have and though messy it the ingredients do taste fresh. Sometimes I get the bowls here as well but they are not as spectacular as the tacos here. Regardless when everything is mixed together either in taco or bowl it all tastes like its going to clog your arteries.. but in a tasty way. The seating here is good and its rarely crowded. Even during work hours you can speed through the line and find plenty of seating available. The staff is nice and the pricing is fine. It a good place if you can stomach a messy taco. read more

Forget Chipotle man, this is like Chipotle on steroids. There are plenty of Mexican options in NYC, and while Blue Maiz doesn't deviate from the traditional cafeteria line style of ordering, it does seem to do it better, and at a cheaper price to boot. A pork burrito here only costs about $8.50. Everything tasted great and fresh. Plus don't have to worry about sanitary issues here! *glares at another chain* Their hottest sauce here was actually pretty intense. That's a great sign of authenticity to me! read more

Feels weird that the food desert near Port Authority is getting some places you'd want to go out of your way to. Had some elote, aka grilled Mexican Street corn. For 2.75/2.99 alone including tax it is worth it as a small snack. Fast casual spot located just two minutes from Port Authority. The chicken quesadilla with onions and peppers was super tasty. The ingredients were super fresh and the tortilla was toasted to perfection. The salsa verde was flavorful and had a nice kick to it. The place was clean, had plenty of seating and the staff was friendly. The prices were fair for the serving sizes. Great variety as well. The franchise competitor cannot sleep on this establishment. Every item on the menu is legit and the taco taste phenomenal. It taste just like how it is off the truck from my neighborhood in Queens. They should offer a lime for some zest but I am sure they will figure it out in due time. The store front across the street is vacant so I hope a competitor doesn't come in and push them out like QDoba. The seasoning is very prevalent on all the meats. I rarely leave reviews, but I ordered from here on seamless, and I'm incredibly disappointed. The delivery guy refused to come up to my apartment because he didn't have a lock? I've never once in my life had a driver refuse to deliver my food, especially when they charge a delivery fee. I assume it was from a bike, but he never truly specified. I finally get the food, and it's missing 2/5 of the fillings I picked, one of which I paid more money (an extra dollar) for. The picture on seamless shows a delicious looking grilled burrito with char marks on the tortilla. It was just a regular soft mediocre tortilla - false advertising. Just a terrible experience overall, and chipotle is cheaper and tastes better. EDITED TO ADD: In Store, the burrito is $9.25 on seamless it is $10.25. Essentially, they are charging a $4.29 delivery fee, which in this case is on a $9.25 item. That's literally a 46% delivery fee for them to not even deliver to your door. Add to that the dollar I was charged for cheese that wasn't added, and it becomes 57%. What!? read more

Wasn't sure what to expect from this place since it was relatively new and seemed like another "fresh ingredient burrito place", aka chipotle, qdoba, and freebirds. I'm a huge fan of chipotle. This place is actually very comparable, primarily because it seemed priced right. I ordered a grilled chicken burrito and a street corn and it was $11.16. Sounds like a deal to me! And it did not disappoint. The flavor is fantastic and portion is right. The lady that made the burrito was very nice and even gave suggestions. We ordered the street corn with mayonnaise and cheese. That was also delicious and well worth it's price. The ambiance is also really awesome. Great Spanish music and vibe to make everything come together and feel like you're in a restaurant off a street in Mexico. Will definitely be back to try the blue corn tortillas and beef carne asada. Yes it reminds me of a certain chain... While I never like comparing, it has been mentioned in other reviews that it is very similar in style. Stopped in earlier for a quick lunch with the Mrs. She ordered the chicken tortilla soup and street corn. I in turn went with the three tacos. One each, chicken,chorizo and beef. For the beef, I opted to try the blue corn tortilla and regular corn for the rest. Seems like this place just opened because they still have the grand opening sign out front and balloons inside. My tacos were smallish in size, but extremely flavorful. Of the three I would have to say, the chorizo was my favorite, just enough heat. I had their mild salsa roja, but may have to come back to try the others. Blue Maiz is very reasonably priced especially for being in midtown Manhattan. I walk past this place everyday going and coming from work. today since its a beautiful day decided to gonfor a walk and check it out. I got a chicken quesadilla with pepper and onions. Overall the flavor and quality is not bad. the chicken was not over cooked and fresh. The peppers and onions were a home run, it was like eating an italian sausage and pepper sandwich minus the sausage!! The guacamole has a nice creamy texture with tomato mixed in. personally next time i will ask for some jalapeno on the side for some spice. The pico de gallo was nice and fresh and an excellent conplement to the gacomole and the quesadilla. I wqs very dissapointed in the chips, overall they seemed to be stale and covered with salt making them unenjoyable. i will definatly come back again to try other dishes! read more

Finally, the holy grail of assembly line style Mexican restaurants. Over the years, chains like Chipotle and more recently, Dos Toros have become massively popular, but unlike its more trendy counterparts, Blue Maiz is a single, standalone shop, which I think helps it maintain a higher quality standard. I should add that the food also feels more real, contrasting with the homogenized ingredients that you find in chains. The first thing I noticed was how much larger the portions are. For something during busy lunch hours, I'm used to seeing people throw a lazy scoop of meat onto your order and calling it a day, but here, you can expect at least once full scoop, if not 2-3, which really makes me feel like I'm getting a good bang for my buck. The rest of the ingredients are added with simailar levels of generosity, which ultimately creates an order that you'll find quite heavy in your hand. You might have to be a bit more proactive while ordering through the line if you want something extra, but I appreciate the efficiency of their service, and I can't blame them for trying to handle the Midtown lunch train. The other thing I really appreciate is the diversity of options. As a big chorizo fan, I was ecstatic to find that this place offers chorizo (and it's pretty good), as well as some more authentically marinated and shredded meats. They also offer nachos that get pretty well loaded, and their quesadillas are far superior to anything I've seen at Dos Toros. There are also a few more options for sides and drinks that resemble stuff that you'd see at a more traditional Mexican restaurant (no horchata though), which I'm a big fan of. Given the expanded options, improved quality, and huge portions, I don't see myself ever going back to Dos Toros or Chipotle, as all three of these restaurants compete within a couple block radius. My only regret is not discovering this place a lot earlier, as I think I would have saved myself from many sad burritos. Maybe I'll update this after I've sampled more options, but for now, I'm already pretty confident that this is it. read more

Basically like chipotle style service. Pick you dish, meat, veggies, any sides. I got the tacos and opted to have a different meat for each of the 3 tacos it comes with, (beef, chorizo, and carnita). The beef ok, wasn't toigh but the pieces were big for a taco. My favorite was the carnitas, soft and moist, with a hint of lime. The chorizo was good, basically the sausage without the caseing. A little spice but managable. Portions aren't huge but filling. Chips and salsa. Looks like they fry the chips there. You get to pick the type of salsa. I like how the salsa is thick and not watery.
