My wife and I went to Maize on our first year anniversary. We enjoyed our meal. Like the other reviewers said, the popcorn and biscuits at the start of the meal were some of the best I've had. My wife doesn't like biscuits and she loved the Maize biscuits. My wife had a salad that was a special that night. She loved the salad. For her entree she had a hanger steak and I had the bison steak. We both thought our meats needed to be cooked a little more. Bison med - rare is not as cooked as beef med - rare. The highlight of the meal I think was the smashed potatoes and escarole under the bison. I have never tasted potatoes this good. I would go back to Maize just to have a bowl of the potatoes. At the end of the meal we were too full to have dessert. As part of the meal, two hot cookies were brought out to us. They were tasty. I thought the waiter was excellent. On a Tuesday night, he was the only person in the dining room. He was educated about the food. He was vigilant about keeping our water and wine glasses filled despite the 35 person dining room being 3/4 full. We drove 40 minutes to the restaurant. An absolute must for foodies! Everything about our meal was flawless, from the first bite to the last. While the cozy restaurant was a bit crowded, our service did not suffer; the waiter was friendly and attentive throughout our entire visit. This is not "fast food" by any means. Every single part of your meal is made to order, so the dining experience can last several hours. Hubby and I went out for a date night at Maize, it was our first time there. From the moment we stepped into Maize we felt like we were guests at a dinner party. Even though it was a bit small inside it was still cozy and comfortable. The host was very hospitable, he gave us complimentary wine as we didn't realize it was BYOB, He treated us to the "friendship" popcorn(which was really cute idea,) and made us feel quite welcome without hovering or being obnoxious. Our meals were EXCELLENT! It was a treat in every sense of the word, made fresh to order, perfect cook with creative and high end flavor combinations. I forget what my hubby had. I had the crab cake on a bed of vanilla corn. It was scrumptious. It was also a treat for the sources(local farms)of the food to be posted where it could be seen, what a great way to show case true local artisan fare! I hope Maize continues the trend of using highest quality of locally grown/raised food. Highly support places like this! My hope is that ALL restaurants will come up to meet these standards. read more

Exquisite. Maize is an incredible asset to our community. Everything I've had here has been very fresh, very creative, and quite obviously lovingly prepared. The little extras that they serve gratis - warm popcorn tossed with olive oil and fresh herbs... a steaming hot biscuit with fresh butter and a slice of honeycomb... a freshly-baked chocolate chip cookie to end the meal - make you really feel that love. Portions are well-sized, presentation is lovely, and every bite of everything I've ever eaten here is an eyes-rolling-back-in-your-head-it's-so-good kinda moment. I am a person who made reservation month in advance. ... well worth it!! I have MS and have to be gluten free, they were 150% supportive and understanding. Was it a little wait for food, yes but your food is cooked to order. If you're a Fridays type diner, then the ambiance of Maize will be lost on you. Come to enjoy delicious food and the company you are with. If you want wifi and a quick burger, Maize may be lost on you. My 23 year old daughter was along with us and loved her meal, compared to mussels to those she had in Europe. Maize is wonderful. .. yes small and you need to call for a seat but don't blame them their food is so delicious they have a waiting list!!! Plan a nice evening out, more then worth the effort. We cannot express in words how delightful this restaurant is. This is our go-to place for all special occasions (ex. birthday, anniversary) or monthly date night (leaving our 2 boys home with grandma for a special night out). We have recommended this establishment to all of our friends, families, and strangers seeking a "non chain" hidden gem kind of restaurant. We always get the 5 course tasting menu- great value- $50 for 5 petite dishes (scallops- to die for, fish course, meat course, salad course, dessert course). I always leave full to the gills! We have never been disappointed and that is saying a lot since we visited between 15-20 times over the past few years. The chef is humble and not pretentious by any means. He is kind enough to recognize you with a quick nod or smile to make sure you are enjoying his dishes. You can really tell he loves what he does and it's important to make his guests happy. If you want a chain restaurant- that you can get a quick burger and fries or a bowl of spaghetti, this is not the place for you (go to Friday's). However, if you want a quaint place to enjoy unique foods, sip a glass of wine or two with BYOB, and take some time to relax with your hubby/wife/friends (the meals take time- you will wait! I love going out to eat, and this is the absolute best place I've ever eaten. I've been there several times and have never been disappointed from appetizer to dessert. Chef Matt also happily accommodates my gluten free needs without a problem. We heard a lot about this restaurant wanted to try it for a long time. We decided to go on Valentine's Day 2020. Prior to our arrival, the restaurant called to ask about food preferences and allergies. We were told it was an 8 course tasting menu and expect to be there from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Also, it is BYOB. The waiter and waitress were awesome. They were friendly and accommodating. We got there and within 10 minutes we had water (and they kept our glass full), popcorn and warm buttermilk biscuits with honeycomb and butter. Each unique and delicious course was timed perfectly. 8 courses in all not including the biscuits and the cookies at the end. My favorite was the shrimp and grits. My husband's favorite was the duck and mashed yams. My husband said the dessert was his second favorite. The cake, mousse and cookie were great but the homemade chocolate ice cream was the best I've ever eaten. We signed our check at 9:08 and were out the door. Although it is called a tasting menu and the portions are small, we were full when we left. We would highly recommend this restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. read more

This was one of the worst dinning experiences I've had in a while. We, a party of four, arrived at 7:30. We were finally served two appitizers at 9:10. That's an hour and forty minutes to make 2 appitizers. I brought it to the attention of our waiter and he gave me some flippent answer which was not appreciated. The food was very overpriced and the service terrible. This is not a place we will be going back to eat. There are plenty of good restaurants which provide friendly service and quality food and this is not one of them. Save your money and don't ruin an evening here. read more

My husband took me to Maize for a birthday dinner and we had an excellent meal. Next time I go I might opt for a vegetarian meal because the vegetables and mushrooms in both of our main dishes were the best part. It is very pricey - We had 2 apps, 2 seafood entrees, but no dessert and the bill came to $86 (and it is BYOB). However, the portions were very large which was a pleasant surprise. The free biscuits with honeycomb were delicious. We really wanted dessert but just couldn't eat another bite. I love that a local place has an interesting philosophy and wonderful food so I will be returning as often as possible. read more

Food was delicious but staff wasn't very friendly when it came to food cooking preferences. Went there for a rehearsal dinner and the two food choices were teres major (steak) or fluke. Everyone's steak was prepared rare; literally the inside of my steak was raw and cold. When I asked if it could be cooked more, the response I received from the waiter was that "it would be ruined" and "it would be tough as hell". Either way, rare steak is not my preference so I still opted for it to be cooked more to my liking. Interestingly enough, after being cooked to medium/medium-well, my steak was delicious and so tender I could cut it with a fork. However, the feedback from the rest of the guests who ordered the steak and received it rare was that is was so rare that it was tough, cold in the middle, and most of them couldn't eat it since it was so undercooked. In the future, it would be helpful for the staff to understand that not everyone likes or can eat their food prepared the same way as everyone else and guests shouldn't have to be made to feel uncomfortable when speaking up about their food preferences. Thank you, Craig LaBan! For family birthday dinners we always go into the city but after reading Craig's review of Maize in his review of the best suburban restaurants we decided to give it a go. What a pleasure from the moment we walked in. Environment means a lot to me and both the physical space and the warm, inviting atmosphere, starting with our waitress extraordinaire to extending to the very busy chef and sous chefs, made us relaxed and ready for the great food to come. We had: the lamb ravioli (we had just passed the farm the cuties come from so a twinge of guilt but not for long after tasting the first bite along with the savory sauce served with it) the cherry blue cheese salad, the bison special (so tender and flavorful- my husband was loathe to share even one bite) and the crab cake followed by the fresh blueberry crisp and a goat cheese cheesecake. Each bite of 1st, 2nd and 3rd course was delicious. I have had 3 crab cakes in the past week (at excellent Jersey shore restaurants) and was uncertain whether I was up for another but this one was nothing like any other I have ever had with a wonderful Creole sauce and no filler to be found. I already know where I am going for my birthday... but hopefully I won't have to wait that long! read more

The food was fabulous, as usual. The flavor of each item is to be savored. I can't think of a restaurant that has better food. That being said, the noise level is unbearable. You can not expect to have a conversation in this restaurant. It's such a shame, after Five years that they can't figure a way to fix this. A great meal includes everything, the ambiance is part of the experience. They need to get rid of the tile floors and the brick wall. Maybe that would help, I am not sure. Perhaps it's time to move to a bigger place( the restaurant is totally full every time I have been there.) We stopped going in cold weather because every time the door opens the dinning room becomes the same temp as the outside. I hope this issue can be fixed because between the noise and the weather I guess I will be coming less and less. One other suggestion, they could use a little help in the service department. Again, fine dining includes everything. The experience is not just the food. The waiter seems so rushed. He is the only wait staff. Know one can wait on 28 people at one time and give the best service. This food deserves the best service possible. I will go back to Maize but only if I have a 5:00pm reservation in nice weather. Maybe it will be quiter and the one and only waiter will be less rushed. Again I want to say the food was beyond comparison. I wish it was being served some place quiter. read more

What a pleasant surprise! We thoroughly enjoyed our meals! The food was fresh and delicious! It was not your typical suburban restaurant quality food and definitely not a "quick" meal so be patient. Take your favorite wine and savor each course. It's well worth the wait. The biscuits were served fresh out the oven...it was delish but a little bit of a tease because we had to wait for the next course. We ordered the Mahi and bison. Both are recommended. This very unassuming (from the outside) resturaunt is one of the best meals I've had since moving from Chicago to PA. The chef balanced the foods from the tasting menu perfectly. Being able to see into the kitchen is always a treat. Do not go here if you want to be "in and out" in an hour. Plan on 2-3hrs to savor food, your company and the service. Don't forget the added bonus of BYOB. I don't want to sound snobby, but we had so many good restaurants located in Chicago proper...and Maize would fit right in there. Amazing food. read more

We moved from perkasie to nazareth and I've gotta say this is by far one of the best places we've eaten in the locally grown foods category. The decor is nice, the food is incredible, and the service is wonderful. The one time our food came out wrong, it was on the house. The chef is part native-american and that's where the theme is for the restaurant. We've taken friends to eat here and so far everyone has been wowed. Serving up all local cuisine with a new menu every night. Maize is certainly as good as it gets. They manage expectations by letting you know up front that their dining experience takes about two hours, and every course is certainly worth the wait. The Maitre D is kind and courteous not to mention extremely knowledgeable and very attentive. Occupying an intimate nook in Perkasie, Maize could give any upscale city restaurant a run for their money. My wife and I Yelped restaurants in this area because it was a BYOB on the way back home to the Poconos after seeing a show at the Keswick Theater. Well...JACKPOT! We brought some red wine from PA and NY. It went perfectly with our meal. We started with the first course scallops, which we split. It was plenty for both, and very good! Our main course was the Bison steak over fork smashed Yukon Gold potatoes. Between the dry red wine, and the medium rare bison, it all blended together with a bite and a sip. One kissed the other. I feel the same way as Stacee D. . I cannot say enough about this tiny place ! My girl friends and I had a fabulous meal there this past Saturday evening - we also had the table right by the kitchen - there were 6 of us so it was not exactly peaceful ( what do you want with 6 yakking women ?) but we were still able to hear one another and have conversation . The menu is unique and mouth watering . Go hungry - it takes a little bit for the first course to come but they ply you with little bowls of the most amazing fresh popped popcorn seasoned w/ sea salt , parsley and olive oil and then they bring you a fresh baked biscuit w/ a dollop of local honey and slivers of fresh butter . I recommend the sweet potato gnocchi and the braised fennel over home made pasta - heaven !! Great service !! BYOB !! We were greeted by the owner and he was not happy at all. I think I confused the reservation on his voicemail. I asked for a call back if there were any problems and I did not receive a call back. He went through the menu too quickly and I could barely hear him. He said we could not have the 3 course sampler as it is not for party's of 4 or more. He did change his mind after an hour into it. Our reservation was originally for 7 pm and I called back for 6:30 pm. He took our order at 7 and then a couple people in our party received appetizers and they came out at 7:30. We waited for our entree's till 9:20. It was exactly 2 hours for us to get our food. The place was not at all crowded. I thought the food was good, but really 2 hours to prepare our food. If I did this at home it would have not taken so long. If you are willing to wait 2 hours for your food this the place for you. I thought the food was good, but not worth 2 hours. We were ready to leave as soon as we got there due to him not being at all happy with us. We should have left, but we gave it a chance. read more

Strength was the overall dining experience and great food. Tried the tasting menu and loved the scallops with truffle, rabbit and cheese dish dish. . The halibut had a great sauce but the fish was very overdone and had the consistency of chicken. However, we found this to be a wonderful alternative to driving into Philly. Even the person returning my call when I tried to make a reservation could not have been nicer! Absolutely would return BUT female server made two communication blunders that lingered. First, we asked whether we could have a tasting menu in which my wife and I were given different dishes so that we could enjoy a larger breadth of food. Unfortunately her response after asking the chef was " I'm sorry we are understaffed tonight and cannot do that." I found it to be a very bad way to say no. Why is a very small restaurant understaffed? Then hire another kitchen person . Never tell a patron that you are understaffed! :( Secondly upon telling her that we were in no hurry as we had 9 PM show at the Sellersville theater, she responded , " that will not be an issue I will need this table by 8 PM." That had my wife and I looking at our watch all night and in fact the "understaffed" kitchen fell behind and we did not actually leave our seat until 8:25. Finally, we heard her telling the next able of 4 who got there before us," we really need to clear this table for a party of 4 standing outside the restaurant." Poor pacing by the kitchen should not be placed on the shoulders of the patrons to rush out. However, that server withstanding, we found everyone to be knowledgeable, the food to be sophisticated and the room very inviting. We really enjoyed the food and in fact commented that EVERY dish on the menu seemed appealing. Great job! We will return. read more

It is two hours of just great food and friends. If your in a rush this is not the place. I love love love Maize!!! The food is always phenomenal, truly! Be prepared to have your taste buds assaulted. The chef delivers clean and fresh dishes for the complex palate. You will never be disappointed with the chef tasting menu. It's the equivalent to Christmas when your five. Five courses that are a complete surprise and keep you wanting more! Absolutely a culinary adventure, enjoy!!! My only complaint is the service, the staff is extremely casual and lacks professionalism. This is a shame, the cuisine is an absolute delight, but the service would keep me from going back.
