This is a cash only BYOB restaurant--and bring your own glasses to avoid a service charge of $2/glass. We went with another couple and we are "old", noisy environments are not our friend---and this was exceptionally quiet---we could effortlessly carry on a conversation. The food was excellent, as was the service and everyone enjoyed their meal. I ordered the smoked brisket and asked that it not be lean. The waitress told me that the chief trims all the fat off. Apparently the customer comes first has limits, I would have been happier to trim the fat myself----but that is the only (and minor) comment. I also had the chicken livers in a madeira wine sauce, an appetizer that was one of my favorites 40 years ago under former owners---it is still excellent! For an unrushed and enjoyable evening give this a try, you will be rewarded. read more

Went for Sunday brunch today and once again this place never disappoints. Best Eggs Benedict and brunch meal also comes with a buffet with some salads and fruit while you wait for your brunch meal. First off let me say they were great about accommodating my wife's dairy issue, partly being that most of their meals are made when ordered including sauces. So the chef was able to make changes without totally changing the flavor of the dish. My wife had the flank steak with Bourguignonne sauce, which was super tender and flavorful, and I had the seafood pot pie, which was delicious with ample seafood. All in all the food was great, the service was friendly and helpful, and atmosphere was quaint and comfortable. read more

We enjoyed another great meal here last night. Everyone in our group ordered something different and were all delicious. BBQ brisket was sooo tender and melted in your mouth. We all started with dinner salad and house dressing ( a citrus vinaigrette that was light and refreshing on a hot summer evening) The homemade pickles and crispy toast is out of this world. The service is fantastic. The food is cooked to order which makes for a relaxing, no rushed meal. A combination of a lovely historic building, cozy atmosphere, great service and delicious meals makes this a rare find. It is byob and cash only which, for us isn't a problem. I ate at the Kaufman House twice in early November with family members who live in the area, so this review is way late. I can't remember everything we all ate, though I do remember how superb each dish was, especially the filet. The only dish I remember that I didn't love was the snapper soup, probably because I'm used to the heavier versions that I used to have when I was younger and Billy Francis serves a much lighter version. This is a BYOB restaurant, so indulge on the wines! The really intriguing part of the Kaufman experience is the building's strange and even eerie past. It's definitely haunted. On both visits that week, Desiree Francis walked us through all three floors. The third floor is especially creepy--two rooms in particular. The owners have meticulously restored the rooms on the second floor and have exposed the 18" thick limestone walls. There's a room on the first floor that's particularly haunted, but the main dining areas are benign and hugely charming. If you want to visit an out-of-the way country inn with a spooky and colorful past (Desiree will tell you about it) and owners who are dedicated to the craft of cooking great dishes with local ingredients, the Kaufman House is the spot. read more

We were there on the same night as the review by "James S". There were two tables occupied, and the other one was by a lady on a bike who came in after us. Our dinner was fine, and our server was very attentive, but not overbearing. Considering the date (Halloween), we didn't expect a lot of patrons. I suspect that "James" is a competitor. read more

A friend and I went here on a Tuesday night, roughly around 6:15-6:30. Other than the Lions Club meeting, we were the only patrons. The waitress was very nice. The atmosphere was nice. The food, in my humble opinion, just didn't live up to the expectations I had from reading other reviews. We ordered meat loaf wrapped in bacon and also a chicken pot pie. We planned to share each other's meal. I started with the meatloaf. I think it had a terrible flavor. The bacon that it came wrapped in was really terrible. I think it was made days before and reheated. Garlic mashed potatoes were good. "Vegetables of the day" or whatever they call it is a euphemism for "undercooked vegetables". The chicken pot pie looked great. I do not believe the vegetables inside it were "farm to table" unless that means a quick trip to the flash freezer. Honestly, not nearly as tasty as one would expect being "farm to table" (their words, not mine). Carrot cake for dessert was good. Vanilla ice cream with some kind of Jack Daniels caramel drizzle was good. We got a $3 off coupon for our next visit. Anyone want it? We won't be using it. read more

My son, wife and I had brunch at this nice quaint restaurant. I am the owner of Hartzell Insurance and I have literally have visited and insured thousands of restaurants and bars in in my career. The food was terrific while it was fresh and well presented on white linens. Desiree was our waitrees and she was a delight to deal with. She even gave me a tour of the kitchen and I report the kitchen to be spotless. I have seen many commercial kitchens and this particular kitchen is one of the cleaner kitchens I have ever seen. My husband took me to Francis Kaufman House Restaurant for my birthday dinner. It was fabulous! The crab cakes are to die for! Swimming with lumps! My husband's 12 oz. NY strip was made perfect to order-medium rare. Succulent! Delicious sides, great portions, great service and competitive pricing, calm atmosphere. Oh and the bread served warm with sweet butter, mouth watering flavor. Salad was fresh greens mixture, with awesome blue cheese dressing. Just had lunch at the Francis Kaufman House with friends and it was fabulous from start to finish. The chef was awesome and very accommodating to all of us. The bacon wrapped scallops were perfectly done and delicious with the dip. The apple streusel we had for dessert was out of this world. I would highly recommend for lunch and my husband and I are going back tonight for the early bird special. Don't miss this tucked away jewel. It is awesome it's BYOB. Can't beat that. We cannot give higher than five stars for this gem of a restaurant but we would go to 10 if we could! The crisps and home made pickles before the appetizer was so good, we ate them all!! We began with the snapper soup as this is a rare dish in our home state of Ca! It was so good that we found out it could be shipped to us and it will be making our Christmas dinner very special. The original Kaufman House was a fine dining institution to many people from Bucks and Montgomery county. In fact, the building holds a special place in my memory as it was the the last restaurant my entire family dined at together before my Mom passed away from cancer in 1993. The outside and inside has been renovated and looks much better than it did the last time I was here just before it closed, which was back in 1999. Four of us went here for dinner. The list of things we tried included: Appetizers: Smoked Unami Trout, Chicken Livers Madeira, Iceberg Wedge and Soup du Jour Entrees: Pan-Seared, Hempseed Crusted Salmon, Seafood Pot Pie with shrimp, scallops, jumbo lump crab and vegetables in cream sauce, Petite portion Grilled Filet of Beef with a caramelized onion and port sauce and Grilled Chicken and Mediterranean Pasta, with roasted tomatoes, grilled asparagus, olive oil, feta and olives. With the exception of the Hempseed crusted Salmon, everyone loved their dishes- my brother said the Hempseed flavor was too dominant because of how heavily it was caked on and it drowned out the nicely cooked fish (he scraped it off). The appetizer portions were especially impressive. The price of the appetizers was seriously offset by the generous portions. Specifically the Smoked Unami Trout and Chicken Livers Madiera were as large as some entrees I've received at other restaurants. There were only a couple of minor negative aspects to our visit. First, the wait between courses is extremely long, at least the night we were there, and there were only 4 other tables. It was a little over 1/2 hour between courses. The menu says that each course takes 20 minutes because of the individual cooking that goes into each dish. We only had appetizers and entrees and were there for 2 hours. That makes for a very long meal. Second, we asked the waitress if it was possible to have separate checks and she said it was. When we asked for our checks she took a while to bring them and then it turned out what she did was take the total bill and split it 50/50 into two separate checks. I've never seen that done before. It was very inventive indeed but unless she was new to waitressing that was an odd thing to do! We just said to heck with it and paid it despite the inequity because the dinner out was starting to get long for just apps and entrees. A building with old fashioned charm that is home to a fine dining BYOB with excellent food and a nice wait staff. A great place to go for an upscale dinner out, so long as you're not in any kind of a hurry! read more

Not recommended for breakfast. Very pricy and the breakfast "buffet", which is included in the price of your breakfast whether you want it or not, was just a few plates of cookies, orange slices, olives and craisins. Weird mix. Meal wise, Breakfast potatoes were extremely salty and had peppers and was so overpowering with spices. French toast was super soggy, crockery (coffee cups and saucers etc) were covered in stains and hard water spots. Ambiance was honestly a little weird. Not very appetizing environment over all. Felt like eating in a strangers dark Victorian dining room. Maybe they do dinner better? Prob won't be back again to find out. Not worth the price. read more

My husband and I had brunch at the Francis Kaufman House today. What a wonderful treat. We love the decor and the service. Desiree, our hostess and server was not only friendly but efficient and knowledgeable about the restaurant. Then we found out she is the owner along with her husband. I had the crab, spinach and cheese omelette as did Ron. We haven't had such a delicious crab omelette since we were in Hawaii. Brunch also included an array of condiments including, macaroni, potato and tossed salads as well as fresh fruit, smoked whitefish and a choice of homemade deserts. For us it's a 5 star, great atmosphere, service and delicious food. Going back for the $14.95 special buffet dinner this Thursday. read more

Last night I had the most wonderful melt in your mouth corned beef paired with oven browned potatoes that were seasoned and crisped on the outside to perfection. This incredible meal was complemented with sautéed cabbage that was seasoned perfectly and cooked to perfection with the right amount of crispness and tenderness that just gave every bite a WOW factor. Chef Billy was really inspired on this creation. Every bite was an AWESOME experience. This guy knows how to cook. Also love his filet and his snapper soup made fresh from the actual turtle itself. This is not the place to go in a rush but it is perfect for catching up with people that you do want to spend time with without being rushed and having one course dropped on top of the other. What a find. Our family loves to go to the flea market on Sunday and have been traveling up route 63 in Bucks county for years. On one such occasion a daughter voiced a request to stop for brunch on the way home. There was agreement and then the process of deciding where. We thought a local non- chain establishment was what we needed. As we drove through Sumneytown, we saw a banner for the Francis Kaufman House. We decided to try it. The converted house was welcoming, as was the owner who seated us out side in a screened-in porch at our request. We were amazed at the menu. So much more interesting than your usual diner fare. Our amazement did not stop there. When our selections arrived it was like being at a fireworks display. Ooohs and aaahs all around. We loved the whole experience. If the Francis Kaufman House was closer to our house we would go for dinner and lunch. As it stands, I am not sure whether it's the flea market I look forward to more, or stopping for our brunch afterwards. We have stopped now many times, know what to expect and love it. read more
