Maketto is... okay. Its pastries and coffee are good, but the Asian food could be better. The fried cruller + soy milk was mostly tasteless and greasy. The pork buns are not the traditional Chinese bbq pork buns (char siu bao). Instead it's like pulled pork w/ a large dollop of sauce on top. At least it's pretty meaty. But then again, where else are you going to get this stuff in DC if you are craving it. It'll have to do. The regular pastries are the things to go for as they are unique - cardamom-pistachio morning rolls, for example. Other than that, it's an interesting concept - the whole place. For lunch, you can go upstairs or downstairs for the same stuff. But for dinner, you can only get it from downstairs. The outdoor seating on the ground level is funky. The two $ designation was misleading and caused me to have a negative experience. Come for the flavors but don't arrive hungry. You can try some amazing dishes here, however, my husband and I spent a lot of money for the equivalent of a snack. Expect to pay $65 for three very small shared tapas style plates and two cocktails. To get a whole dinner's worth for two people and a drink each would have cost $100. We were told we could split one of the big platters (which would have been a better price) but that means we had to agree on one dish together. read more

I went to DC for Spring Break this year and stayed at an Air BnB. The woman who owned the home recommended some restaurants and this was one of them. I love Asian food, but this food wasn't very good. I got the beef dumplings and the flavors didn't mesh well for my palette. I describe it as ground beef in a bowl mixed with potato dumpling; it sounds appealing on the menu but it wasn't at all. The food is passable. To be fair, the fried chicken was delicious. Bao were ok. The egg custard had way too much sugar. It was like a super expensive version of dim sum. The food was certainly not good enough to justify the staff's standoffish and overall pissy attitude. This isn't New York, guys. Our waiter in the bucket hat could take several seats. The prices were too high, especially to be so far outside the downtown part of DC and for such a low-scale atmosphere, including kind of dirty basement bathrooms and a storefront inside the restaurant. A total overhyped place! Came here for lunch yesterday, ordered pork bao, shrimp dumpling, chicken lomein, and crispy tofu and basil. Oh my what a disaster lunch! Shrimp dumplings (with tiny amount of shrimp) were *soaked* in fish sauce, the BBQ stuffing in the pork bao was way too *sweet*, chicken lomein dish was heavily seasoned and *soaked* in dark salty sauce, and the tofu in the crispy tofu dish is not crispy at all, and the dish itself was heavily seasoned and salty. Easy paid parking, nice servers, okay atmosphere but the food was awful. This Maketto is a pinnacle of online overhyped! Not recommended. read more

Although the food was good (fried chicken with honey glaze, beef appetizer and pork buns) something didn't sit right with me. I ended up getting sick on the side of the road about 20 minutes later, then again when I got home. I hate leaving reviews like this but there's no way that the food wasn't the culprit. Live really close so I've tried about everything on the menu except the tartare and the oysters (yuck and yuck). The food is really good, the merchandise is unique, and the cafe is convenient. It is one of the few places on H Street NE that is open for lunch, so I've dragged co-workers there too. My only complain would be the limited lunch time menu, but hey! They are open. It is just a neat place to go. And they have free yoga! And one of the greatest vending machines ever (outside by upstairs walkway). Super cool and really laid back. Want a unique experience? This is your place. We were seated at the bar overlooking the kitchen. It was satisfying seeing the care put into each dish. The expediter managed to taste every dish before releasing it--talk about quality control. We ordered the stir fried broccoli, pork dumplings and fried chicken. In Cambodian tradition, the food is spicy, so brace yourself. Service was excellent and the facility had a hip vibe. My friend and I started with the cafe upstairs. I had a chocolate-cardamom snickerdoodle and a peach tea. The cookie was interesting but I doubt I would order it again. The true delight was the food downstairs in the main restaurant. We tried fried noodles, pork dumplings, spicy sausage dumplings, and red bean profiteroles. The star for me was the fried noodle dish, though I also enjoyed the pork dumplings. The spicy sausage dumplings were far too spicy for me but my friend enjoyed them. My hot toddy was overpriced and lukewarm but my friend's beer was very good. I would absolutely come back here just for the fried noodles. BLAH. Had high hopes for this place, and it really fell flat. VERY typical overrated DC restaurant. Fried Chicken was mediocre at best, and totally not worth waiting a week for after making a reservation (showing up at 8 pm on a friday to find the place half empty didn't make the allure any better). I recommend going on sundays for the dim sum - the food/menu was much better and there are no reservations. This place is fabulous. I've been for dinner multiple times and also go for the coffee shop occasionally on the weekends. COFFEE SHOP: Lovely selection of sweet and savory pastries, though I wish they were a bit smaller. Coffee is good. DINNER: The fried chicken is to die for. What's not to love about this place. The decor is minimal yet beautiful. The coffee and snacks during the day are great, and the food is some of the best in DC. Great service too. Had dinner Sat night. This is a very trendy place and does not look like you are entering a restaurant because you walk into a retail clothing store. Had reservations for the upstairs seating but could not find the hostess. We went upstairs to check in but were told it check in was downstairs? Finally got seated after a slight wait. The waitress came over and tried to explain the menu but it was a poor attempt. She did say that was a price fix menu besides the regular menu, however she did not have one to show us? We ordered from both the small plates and large plates menu which was limited. We were required to order our entire meal at once and were told it was all served family style. The dishes started to come out one by one without serving utensils and we had to track down a waitress because ours was working behind the bar? Asked for chopped sticks for 3 but they only had 2 sets available at the time. To sum up: Service was pathetic Decor and ambiance (CANT EXPLAIN!) Food was good , however Fried chicken over rated) Try dumplings, pork Bao and wok Fried Rice Noodles OVERALL RATING 3 STARS WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN A 2 STAR DECENT FOOD SAVED THEM Management seriously needs to address the poor service issues. Morning coffee service in the cafe is getting sloppy. The drip coffee was lukewarm, the pastry was put on a piece of waxed paper instead of a plate, and where was the little shortbread cookie that is usually put in the little wooden box that your food comes in? I visited Maketto for the first time last Sunday. We barely made it for their dim sum that ends at 4:30, but the staff was more than accommodating. Between my sister and I, we ordered about 5 dishes. I wanted to try the Brussel sprouts, but they had run out for the day. The server recommended the veggie lo mein instead and I'm so glad he did! It was probably one of the best lo mein dishes I've had in my life. The pork bao and shrimp dumplings are also star dishes. Can't wait to get back to try something new. read more

In fairness for the 3 stars, my husband ordered for us as I shopped. I had my mouth set for other than what was ordered so perhaps this is what's throwing me off. The one surprising dish that was yummy was the fried beets. So good, it was. My Bao bun had very little filling. Wondering why the fried chicken and toast was $26. What I did not like was the shrimp crepes with 2 measly pieces of shrimp and mostly fishy gelatinous dough. And the fried dough with a big bowl of soy milk... Perhaps it could have been explained how to eat the dough and milk but even so it was pretty tasteless in general. The wares were traditional but I felt they should have had a modern flair to compliment the restaurant. Didn't see much art as was shown with reviews. Lastly, put price tags on the clothes! I guarantee the clothes will then move faster. Trust me, I can afford it but I'd still like to know without having to ask. Just sayin'. Went upstairs for coffee. Felt like a child as my mocha was lukewarm in temperature. And why classical music? I really wanted to love this place. Their Instagram posts are hot! I will go back again to see if I'm just PMSing. When you first walk in, it looks like a clothing store. The restaurant is in the back. The lounge area is upstairs. What I loved about Maketto, more than the food, was the experience. The atmosphere here is fun and unique. My friends and I never ate Taiwanese food, so that added to the experience. Not knowing what to order, we had the waiter pick several dishes for us, and we all just shared everything. The most memorable dish had to be the Fried Chicken. The Wok Fried Noodles were bland. The Leek Steam Bun was good. We also ordered their bread, can't remember the name, but that was really good. While the food was interesting, I was only blown away by the fried chicken; Very flavorful, juicy and tender. I can't even remember all the dishes we tried, which tells me that a lot of them weren't memorable. Not sure if I would come back, but if I do, I would love to try the other menu options. read more

This is probably my favorite place in DC. Food is fantastic- great flavors, many options, very filling. I am a vegetarian, and found plenty to eat here for dinner. I especially love the cafe space and the free rooftop yoga classes every week- it really fosters a sense of community & results in a gem of an institution where you can spend time besides eating a meal.
