Rating: 3 .5 I usually love Maketto, and I would absolutely recommend it to folks. However, the last time my partner and I went just did not hit the same. The crystal shrimp dumplings were great as per usual. We decided to get some of the dishes we haven't dried at maketto like the eggplant small plate and it didn't taste like eggplant at all. Generally, I thought it could be more flavorful. We also got the larb and the noodle salad and both were just okay. The noodle salad wasn't very flavorful. My partner really liked the larb, I thought it was okay. Despite this, we will definitely be back and be ordering other things on the menu! read more

So a friend and I were looking for a new (to us) Taiwanese establishment and decided to try Maketto out after I found it through (where else) Yelp and fellow Yelpers. We set the date a little over a month ago based on our schedules and separately were really looking forward to seeing if this restaurant would live up to the hype. I am happy to say that it did indeed and more. So first, it's a little to tough to find even if you're looking. Signage is virtually invisible on a non-assuming, black paint storefront. Go by street numbers and you'll find it nestled between the more obvious Bullfrog Bagels and the Rock & Roll Hotel. Second, it's not obvious even after you step inside that this is a restaurant or even a place that serves food or drink of any kind. That's because it's combined with a merchandise store, a coffee bar (on the top floor) and a regular bar (on the main floor behind the merch). Third, we went for lunch which according to a very nice lady who greeted me when I arrived, is a lot less formal than dinner. For lunch, you go upstairs and order - they give you a number which you then place on your table which you pick, self-seating style. They bring the food to you. We tried the braised pork baos, the leek baos, the crystal shrimp dumplings, a Cambodian noodle salad with pork shoulder, and soy milk with dough sticks. All of it was delicious but the real standouts were the leek baos, the noodle salad and the soy milk with dough sticks. So enamored was I with the food that I forgot to check in and also forgot to take pictures except of the soy milk/dough sticks: but presentation was as attractive as the food was tasty! read more

Four years later and Maketto is consistently one of my favorite spots in the city. The ever evolving menu is forward thinking but familiar. It's truly Asian comfort food at it's best and that's what keeps me coming back through the doors time and time again. I'm addicted to the crystal shrimp dumplings (so fresh and plump!), sticky chicken wings (served on top of a bed of rice because they know what's up), Taiwanese fried chicken, and literally EVERYTHING on their dessert menu. As a girl who takes her sugar cravings seriously, I am so impressed with the creativity that goes into their seasonal pastry program. Most recently, I had a guava cheesecake gyoza with dragonfruit compote that basically was the love child between a tropical island, pastelito and fried cheesecake. It was pure heaven. The service is still good as it was on day one. The baristas and servers are consistently kind, helpful and relaxed. As I mentioned before, all of that Vitamin D pouring in through the windows is giving everyone who works here a huge endorphin boost. I have been here for large scale celebrations, date nights, work lunches, and quiet reflective times for myself and the gorgeous mixed use space always gives me the time to energize and congregate. Most recently, they opened a new rooftop corner that is covered in bamboo shade, rattan lounge chairs, and hanging plants that immediately takes me back go my parent's homeland (hang out here on a 100 degree summer day, and it feels like it too!). I have a college friend who moved just two blocks away... TWO BLOCKS away from this restaurant that's been on my radar for years. After visiting him, I decided to make my way there. I had previously made a reservation, though it was originally for outside. Unfortunately, the rain came pouring down, and my outdoor reservation was moved inside. I was quite terrified, as I haven't eaten indoors in well over a year, but I decided to play by ear. When the time came, there were 4 or 5 parties split between two floors. I could manage that, and I am so glad I did. Here's how their system works. People do still occasionally walk around and check on tables, but in my case (and maybe it was also because I was by myself?...), ordering is ALL done by QR code. You order through the site, pay on the site, and have little interaction. I was seated at the bar, and there's already two big carafes of water for me to serve myself with. I had some fancy and tasty drinks, along with my FIRST BAO BUNS EVER! I cannot believe what I have deprived myself of for all these years. The filling was on point and abundant, the dough itself was the perfect texture.. and the hoisin sauce, OOF! I've had hoisin in pho before, but omg why did I let that amazing flavor get lost in the broth? I thoroughly enjoyed those buns and that sauce. I had scallion cakes as well... I would've ordered more, but I was already getting greedy with my spending haha. Oh! The vibes of this place. GREAT vibes! The music they play is cool, and the second floor has all this decor up and this neat looking record store area... don't know if you can actually buy them, but it looked neat! If you are into fusion food, this might be your place. However, this is not a place for authentic Taiwanese food. The fried chicken is too dry like chewing dry wood and the spices are just not right. Service was awful, we waited for 30 minutes to order and another 30 to get our food. The place is packed and the tables have very little distance from one another. We didn't enjoy the surrounding atmosphere because the lighting is poor and the crowd is very loud, we had to yell at each other. The whole dining experience was horrific. I thought long and hard about whether to give this place 3 or 4 stars, but after much internal debate, I finally settled on 2 stars. Several DC locals recommended trying this place, so my expectations were pretty high to begin with. My boyfriend and I decided to go during their dimsum brunch on Sunday. Interior: Screams HYPE. I like the theme going on in here, but couldn't afford a single article of clothing. They had $60 sale rack--what a steal! (sarcasm). I will admit that their outdoor seating area looked quite charming. Food: I ordered some typical dimsum dishes that felt familiar to my chinese palette. Crystal shrimp dumplings, shrimp noodle roll, and shanghai pot sticker buns. We also tried the Maketto fried chicken which sounded interesting. The dimsum dishes were not bad, but also not great. Felt like they used the same mix of herbs to garnish every dish (scallions, cilantro, dill) which was kind of annoying, and quite honestly, felt like a cop-out for dressing up the food. To top it off, the Maketto fried chicken was soaked in this sweet syrup that overwhelmed the whole dish (TIP: order the "5 spice caramel" on the side to preserve your taste buds). Price: Overpriced. $8 for 4 ha gows (shrimp dumplings)? You've got to be kidding me. Perhaps this experience would have been different if we went for lunch/dinner, but all I can say is that you can definitely skip the dimsum on Sundays and head to Chinatown for a cheaper alternative. read more

I can't believe it's taken me this long to go to Majette, especially with sister restaurant ABC Pony so close to my apartment. In any case, I did a takeout order of vegetable gyoza and a spicy beef & rice bowl. Upon entering, I noticed Josh from ABC Pony--always nice to see a familiar face! The dining room are looked quite nice and I'll definitely have to come back and dine in one day. The vegetable gyoza were good and the accompanying soy-based sauce had a little zing to it, which I enjoyed. The spicy beef and rice bowl was a larger portion than it first appeared. Came here on the rainiest Saturday morning and was told that there was a 30 min wait. Fam and I went upstairs where they had additional seating and a cute little lounge area. Less than 30 min went by and we were seated! My parents really liked the buns! You get 2 good sized bao zi for $8. Expensive but not necessarily so for an app. I got the Cambodian noodle salad which was just like a Vietnamese bun cha. Just wish the pork slices were less lean. Taste was great, presentation was pretty and service was prompt and friendly. If my mom says anything positive about a place, it is a high rating! She is picky AF! read more

I went to this place with some foodie friends of mine for restaurant week. For the most part, everything was very delicious. The roasted pork bao practically melted in my mouth, and the larb was perfectly spicy!!! I'm not a big fan of fish sauce and it felt that MANY of the items were very forward on it. A little goes a long way. But a lot sends my senses into a tizzy. The Xiao long bao stuck to the wood of the steamer so by the time you were able to get them off, the soup had already leaked out. That was a little disappointing, but the sauce that came with it was SUPERB! This place is definitely worth a try. Maybe their regular service is better. I'm willing to try it again! read more

Came on a solo food adventure. It's far out from me but well worth the trip. The shrimp dumplings are just on point and taste like Khmer. What does Khmer taste like? Eat that. The sauce is traditional with all the flavors, umami, savory, sour, sweet. My favorite on it is the toasted garlic which gives it that worldly complexity. Dill is new, maybe russian influence but definitely adds to the dish. But if you can only fit one thing in, get the fish cheeks. It comes with this pepper chutney that is mixed with umami and fire. The curry on the bottom with the vegs are next level. Could eat 2 of theses. Ambience, setting and service is top notched. Very nice merchandizing in their store. 10/10 will be back for flavor. read more

Came here with a friend since we were planning on coming a second time for the all you can eat soup dumplings. Interesting ambience, this place may be hard to find since it looks like a clothing store from the outside. The downstairs restaurant food was OK. We tried a few dishes which includes the soup dumplings.I don't think it would be the kind of food I would want do an all you can eat feast with though. To their credit they have a really nice bar, and an cool looking upstairs coffee bar. I plan on coming back and enjoying some of their main dishes. read more

Been a neighborhood patron for years, but service and food quality has unfortunately gone downhill. Last night, I ordered the wok fried noodles dish with red pork added and the crystal shrimp dumplings. Everything was over cooked and uninspiring. The noodles were slimy and lacking in flavor and the dumplings had a very odd texture, along with a metallic aftertaste. Note that these are dishes that I've ordered several times over the years, so I know how they once were, and I've observed a noticeable decline in the quality. I used to give the benefit of a doubt that it would get better post-pandemic, especially because I like to support the chef who does a lot for the community. But the dishes lack the same flavor level and heart. It's also worth mentioning that the menu hasn't changed much since Maketto debuted. As for service, when ordering pick up, the hosts can be quite rude and seem to act like you are inconveniencing them by asking for your food. I won't be back any time soon. read more

Super yum. Trendy. Dishes were full of flavor. Had the crystal shrimp dumplings, the leek and mushroom bao buns, and the pork noodle soup (Cambodian noodle soup, similar to pho). The shrimp dumplings were super delicious. Fresh, crisp, melt in your mouth good. The veggie bao buns were tasty: they had a bit of a surprise curry kick to them. They also had a good bun-to-filling ratio. The noodle soup had a fragrant, lovely broth. Served with a side of sriracha and hoisin, there was the perfect amount of spice. In addition to the restaurant, this place also has a cafe. The coffee was good and the pastries, although we didn't have any, looked delicious. Really cool space in the H street corridor. Wow. Such disappointment. My coworker recommended Maketto as one of this most enjoyable meals he's had. I generally believe him, he's a Korean dude from Houston who loves his food. He went for dinner and had different dishes...so that could be part of it. First off the whole place was a mix of shoe store, art pop up gallery, with a dash of hipster snobbery...perfectly aligned with the deeply gentrified H street. There are seating areas downstairs and upstairs where you place your order and take a number. Upstairs cashier was super nice and helpful which cut our edginess a bit. We ordered: -roast pork banh mi: bread was soft and is baked in house, which was nice. Not sure it was the right texture for banh mi though. They put dill and Thai basil in the banh mi and barely any pickled veggies. The pork fat on the cha siu was not rendered and the pork was rubbery. I will eat almost any cha siu from candy red to honey glazed to cheap takeout chow mein and I couldn't finish this. -Cambodian style noodles: flavor was ok, but the pho noodles were way over cooked, they were literally mushy by the time they got to us. They served it with chili, lime and extra basil which was nice. -ha gao in fish sauce. Basic ha gao probably from a local take out restaurant, not great. Fish sauce tasted good on it...but why? Fusion, that's why. -vanilla egg tarts (which were huge) house made and fresh but I think they were like $8 and they were way too sweet with not enough egg flavor. -honey latte with oat milk. Asked them to cut the five spice from their "five spice honey latte" wasn't feeling the pho/coffee fusion. Latte was super...so at least we have that. D.C. had some surprisingly good fusion restaurants, D.C. noodles on U street for one (which appeared to be Thai folks serving up some minor twists) but Maketto is not one of them. Definitely an example of "please leave the food alone instead of charging me $12 for a hip twist on banh mi" If you're in the area, though, a well made espresso drink and hipster atmosphere might be to your taste. read more

Maketto is a unique place as there's a coffee shop and men's clothing store inside. When you're seated and ready to order, you place your order via QR code. In my opinion, this Covid change has pros and cons: pros are that you can take more time to explore the menu and order as soon as you're ready, and cons are not being able to ask the server for recommendations and the pace of the food coming out. Onto the dinner, the Pork Steamed Bao and Mochi Beignets were the standouts from the meal! The bun itself was extremely fluffy and the pork was rich with flavor. The beignets were light and a great item to end our meal. I would definitely recommend ordering them! While I loved the other two items on the menu, I was disappointed with my main meal. I ordered the Spicy Beef & Rice Bowl. It wasn't spicy, and the beef was actually ground beef which shocked me. Probably one of the dopest spots I've been to in D.C. Maketto is literally an Asian restaurant within a coffee shop within a street fashion store--basically everything I love. Let me just stop right there and let you be on your way now :) But okay so honestly it's just a great place to go for a fun time, something different and unique with all that it has to offer. It was cool to be able to shop around a bit before having really good food. It's probably one of the only times I've had [what tasted like] fresh homemade noodles in Asian cuisine. The food menu isn't huge, but I was super excited to try Cambodian or Taiwanese food. And let me tell you I was not disappointed. We got the spicy lamb noodles and the wok fried rice noodles with roasted pork--both so delicious! Maketto Fried Chicken - Came with two large thighs on two slices of bread with spicy honey on the side. The chicken was crispy on the outside, and tender/juicy on the inside. Portion size was very large. We saved one thigh for the next day, and the flavors remained perfect. Spicy Beef & Rice Bowl - Full of flavor and very filling! OVERALL: food was overly salty and doused with fish sauce. Appetizers were alright, entrees were not enjoyable. Would not recommend. I was really excited to come here after seeing great reviews, but I had a very disappointing experience. We started off with the pork baos and shrimp dumplings. The baos were okay - I could tell that they were going for some sort of fusion (?) but the flavor wasn't great. However, I will say that the baos had good texture and the perfect ratio of bun to meat, which a lot of places get wrong. I didn't have the shrimp dumplings but my boyfriend said they were pretty good and tasted like dim sum. As for the entrees, I was extremely unhappy with what I ordered, the pho. The fried dough was hard and soaked with the soup, which is definitely not what it's supposed to be (I think it's supposed to be you tiao...). The texture and flavor were both off with that one. The soup itself was way too salty and it seemed like they accidentally spilled a ton of fish sauce into it. Although the pork and other vegetables were alright, they all tasted like fish sauce and it was completely overwhelming. I would honestly give this dish a 1.5/10. I had a few bites and couldn't eat the rest, so I decided to eat my boyfriend's entree instead, which were the fried noodles. The fried noodles were okay, very oily and fish sauce-y, but the vegetables were cooked well and delicious. The roast pork, which was an extra $10, was also pretty good but unfortunately also tasted like fish sauce. Honestly the whole meal just tasted like fish sauce. But the fried noodles were so much more bearable than the pho. Definitely would not recommend this place. I gave it a 2 instead of a 1 because the appetizers were okay, and the ambiance is great. I've been here before and tried other things, but this day I decided to try different menu items. I first started off with their crystal shrimp dumplings and they were amazing. The flavor and the spices were so delicious that I literally wanted to lick the sauce off the plate. I did not do that though but even without the dumplings the sauce was incredible. I then decided to get the Cambodian style Pho and that was even more amazing. I have a lot of friends that are Cambodian and have tried many dishes. This one was exceptional especially with the combination of flavors, spices and the pork was just incredibly tasty. The portion of the pho was worth the price. I also got a pot of the chamomile tea which helped to wash everything down. Overall, a great experience and meal. Due to COVID-19 I was the only one dining in at the top and that was ok, as I felt I rented out the entire place to myself. So good! Loved the birdcage Vibes and relaxed setting. Ordering was so simple using the QR code. We were able to order in multiple stages before closing out so we could space out the food arrival. This Cambodian Taiwanese restaurant on H St had great ambiance and food. What stood out to me was the crispy guyere dumplings, it felt like biting into fried gnocchi and paired really well with the beef chili that came in the dish. Maketto means marketplace and this is a communal marketplace that combines retail, restaurant, and café. The retail is located in the middle of the restaurant area and the café is upstairs. The ambience is great, very hipster. It is similar to a place in Brooklyn or Echo Park. I usually do not like those places but the food is worth it. I would recommend going as a group of 4-6 people so you can optimize trying different plates. HAPPY HOUR: I don't know how long this concept will last here, but I recommend trying it. The deal is you can buy any drink and got a free veggie gyoza (4 pcs), veggie spring rolls (3 pcs), veggie bao (2 pcs), or pork bar (2 pcs). I got #YourHome, which was a well balanced cocktail similar to a Brandy Alexander. The Tuk Tuk is a beer specially brewed for the restaurant and is super good and cheap. FOOD: They have a dinner menu, a prixe menu for $35 (app, entree, and dessert), and an all day menu. For starters we had strange flavor eggplant dip, veggie gyoza, veggie rolls, and the steamed pork Baos. The strange flavor eggplant dip and veggie gzoya were my favorite. The Taiwanese fried chicken is two huge tender boneless pieces flavored with five spice and bread. Highly recommend it. The lamb noodles were well flavored and the noods were tender along with the lamb. It is very spicy. The bone marrow as a good but I might be too much for less adventurous folks and too tame for more adventurous folks. DESSERT: We got tempura fried banana, taro, and melon. It was good but heavy. OVERALL: Its definitely pretentious, but #DC. The food is well flavored and prepared. However, it is pricey. If you can expect this is a hipster stop that you will need res for, you can enjoy the delicious food.
