Ugggggh their Taiwanese fried chicken with chile honey is to die for. Seriously, one of the best fried chicken dishes I've ever had. Have yourself a seat in the courtyard or the private tent above, and indulge to your heart's content. 3 of us split that chicken, along with the coconut smothered whole sea bass (also delicious) and the wok fried noodles (saucy and spicy), and left stuffed and very happy. I giggled at how hipster and overhyped this place appeared to be (seriously, it's also a cafe and a men's boutique?), but the food shuts that impression down really quick- definitely worth checking out. Very urban chic spot. Don't miss the entrance just because it looks like a boutique clothing shop - that opens up to a bar, table seating and patio seating in the back. I think there is upstairs seating as well. I usually scoff at hipster-y attempts at fusion dim sum, but this is one extremely rare case where I found pretty much everything served to be amazing. It's hard to pick a favorite! The pork larb curry was fantastic - full of flavor and felt like homemade comfort food; the vegetable wok fried noodles came out piping hot and just hit the spot; the fried chicken was a definite highlight - superbly textured and seasoned with a zany Asian sauce; the chive and shrimp dumplings were light and packed with delicious goodness; and last but not least, the coconut custard french toast managed to be satisfyingly sweet without going overboard on the sugar. The coffee cocktail I got was pretty terrible though - wouldn't recommend it. All in all, delightful DC dining outing. read more

Came here on a Sunday. Was an awesome idea. The front is a boutique. the back is a small Resturant. The upstairs is a cafe/Boutique. The people were super nice. Destiny was our server and she was dope AF. We had the Chinese donut and steamed soy milk, the Maketto Chicken, crepe shrimp rolls, mala cucumber, potsticker buns, Thai tea crunch, cortado everything is delicious. Where do I begin?! This place was fascinating from the minute I walked in the door. Once you walk in you're in a clothing/sneaker/accessory store (pretty cool). I've never seen anything like it before. There is a bar downstairs, an outside eating area, an upstairs where you can sip your drink on the lovely balcony-ish 2nd floor. Also, on the second floor there is a coffee bar/store again with a seating area. The drinks were deliciously refreshing and I loved my sling slung (my 3 sling slings actually). Now to the food! What can I say - I devoured all of mine in record time. We got the Khmer tamarind salad (so fresh, so delish), the pan-fried leek buns (MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE), and for dinner we shared the Taiwanese fried chicken and bread and for a non-fried chicken eater I was all over that dish! Fantastic food, fantastic staff, great atmosphere. Probably my favorite restaurant in DC!

First tip: I walked past this place the first time because all I saw was the sneaker/clothing store. Just walk in and the hostess is in the middle. Hostess asked if we wanted to sit in the kitchen, and I said sure because it sounded cool. It's only cool if you get a rare seat facing the actual kitchen. Otherwise you are squashing elbows with fat old people who have no idea how to share personal space. They're like those man-spreading dudes on the subway. The tight quarters also make it hard to share food (and the menu is meant for sharing) so if you are offered a seat at a table, take it! The waitress suggested that two small plates and one large would be good for two people, so that's what we did. Small plates: leek dumplings and oyster omelet. I cannot stop thinking about the dough on those dumplings. It was thin and flakey in a way that I had never eaten before. The oyster omelet was very generous with the oysters, but there was this gooey batter incorporated into the omelet. It wasn't bad, just different. For the large plate, we had the wok-fried noodles and added pork belly. I thought the pork belly would be in the noodle dish, but it came as a side plate with pickled cabbage. The pork belly was very meaty as far as pork belly goes and the pickled cabbage (similar to kraut) was a perfect compliment. I'm not sure why you can only order the pork as an addition to the noodles even though it's its own plate.The noodles were perfectly chewy and deliciously smoky. There were plenty of vegetables in it too. Garnished with pickled jalapenos and crispy fried garlic, the flavors were perfectly balanced as all of their dishes were. The noodle bowl was GIGANTIC. Even without the pork belly, it was a lot of food. I took home enough leftovers for lunch the next day. So, if you get the stir fried noodles I would recommend only one small plate instead of two. read more

We had the all you can eat XLB/soup dumplings. Soup dumplings were mediocre, server was super inattentive and blew us off repeatedly. We had to ask for a drink menu, had to ask for chopsticks and bowls (who can eat soup dumplings with a FORK?!), and at one point our server spat something out of his mouth. The pork belly was super fatty and soggy, and it had almost inedible mouth feel. The only truly good things we had were the crystal shrimp and the whipped tofu. read more

Big flavors all around here! Got lucky on a weeknight and there was no wait. This place is all about the food. We tried several things on the menu including the much lauded Taiwanese Chicken, the buns, the bao, cocktails and more...If you have read any of my reviews, you will know I am all about in your face flavors...that's all Maketto delivers. Everything is balanced...just the right, savories, sweetness, heat...each dish as solid as the next. All a rollercoaster for your sense of taste, smell, sight and so on... The outdoor eating is nice when the weather is right. It would be my choice of dining area to match the food. I also sat in the back in that row of seats across from the kitchen. This area I don't like at all...Counter is too thin, just plain uncomfortable overall. I have a fix though...get rid of the unnecessary clothing section up front and add more seats. I'm as much into clothing and fashion as the next guy...but at Maketto... irrelevant...this place is about the food! read more

I was there for the New Years celebration. The deal included open bar until 2am and buffet until 12am. The food was EXTREMELY delicious that I definitely want to go back there for the food. I cant say the same thing for the drinks though. Since it was an open bar I already had very low expectations for the drinks and the bar. However, even though the lines at the bars werent too long, the bartenders would put extreme amount of ice to the cocktails and make them super water-y that made the drinks literally disgusting. I couldnt drink at all --other than a glass of champagne at midnight-- i believe that if you are offering a deal which includes an open bar, and if people are paying for that, you shouldnt be fooling them by giving them water with a bit of alcohol in it. read more

I've been here a couple of times and I've always ordered the same thing-- spicy fried tofu. When they say spicy, THEY MEAN IT. It's almost intolerable but I mean that's how you know it's legit. This place is super cool with a coffee shop/bar upstairs where you can lounge and do work for hours and no one cares, or you can sit downstairs to order food/drinks and it's a very relaxed and just cool atmosphere. However, the last time I went, I ordered the same thing and it was extremely dry. There was very little sauce on it and the tofu was very hard. I also ordered the dumplings which came highly recommended. They were good and really spicy as well, but a little bit cold. So for the first time, this place didn't impress me. I was impressed, however, when I asked for a hot alcoholic drink and the waiter asked me detailed questions and then presented me with an amazing, steaming hot beverage of gin with tea and other magical ingredients. Since I've enjoyed all my experiences prior, I'm leaving it at 4 stars but I'm hoping their kitchen becomes more consistent again! read more

The food is outstanding. I'll eat with strangers for the deliciousness that is Maketto. 10 out 10.

Almost walked past Maketto because it looks like a clothing store, and the sign is minuscule. The wait for a group of four for Sunday dim sum was about 30 minutes, which we spent sipping tea and coffee upstairs in the cafe. We ordered too many noodle dishes, and were quickly stuffed. We ordered one pork and one shrimp rice noodle crepe which was savory, and the wok fried noodles were the same noodles with a spicy sauce. The pork steamed bao had a sweet pulled pork filling, and the bread was sweet and chewy. Also tried the salt and pepper fried oysters which was dusted with peanuts (caution for those with allergies) and accompanied with pickles and a bit of mayo. The waitress highly recommended the crispy fried dumpling with braised beef is more accurately described as fried cheese on top of ground beef and sauce. Dumpling was kind of a misleading term, but the dish was overall good. We were pretty conservative in ordering food, and it came out to about $15 per person pre-tip (not including coffee/tea). I would go back to try the pastries or for the dinner menu. read more

My Dining Partner and I headed to Maketto during Saturday brunch time. We love Toki, so we were interesting in checking out EBY's new joint. Brunch time is a little bit different. You order and pay at the counter, get your drinks, pick a table, and they bring your food over to your table. The place is spacious, with high ceilings, and a nice patio and deck out back. The shop out front is hipster cool. If I were in the market for fancy leather shoe laces in beautiful packaging, I know where to go. Their collection of designer kicks is impressive. We got two Cambodian noodle soups, a sandwich, a noodle salad, the pancake, and two beers. When it all arrived at the table, we realized that we had completely over ordered. But, the food was soooo good, and so reasonably priced, this was a good thing! If you love pho (and who doesn't?), you will love the noodle soups. They are generously packed bowls with rice noodles, some grilled pork, bean sprouts, toasted onions, raw/pickled garlic, jalapeños, rich porky broth... it all blends together for a complex and delicious bowl of homey goodness. The pancake was sort of like Native American fry bread, topped with smokey spicy ground beef (reminds me a bit of Jamaican patty beef, in a good way), carrot shreds, and a sunny egg on top. This was incredibly flavorful and delicious. We were so full from the above, we packed our noodle salad and sandwich to go. I've had the sandwich previously, and because of that I am very much looking forward to snack time later today. Cool atmosphere to eat delicious food. We will be back. read more

I love this place! I came here when the weather was cold so I didn't get a chance to see the outdoor seating which is enclosed in a greenhouse. At first I was confused because in the front it's a small shop where they sell things like bracelets and shirts, behind it seems like a bar/cafe, with the upper level being a really clean and cute cafe with multiple seating areas. Back down to the first floor, if you enter to the back it's a greenhouse seating area and then behind that is a Cambodian/ Taiwanese restaurant *that sells BOMB ass food * I've never tried Cambodian or Taiwanese food but their noodles are very good. This has become a staple on H Street, NE. We have been here a few times and have always had a great experience. The restaurant/store has a fantastic vibe. The staff from host/hostess to server to baristas are all really friendly and engaging. They are knowledgeable about the menu and the ethos of the restaurant. We sometimes ask difficult questions (how something is cooked, what spices are used etc) and the servers without fail are able to answer the questions; on the odd occasion they do not know the answer they will find out. Ambiance: Very hip and chill. Drink: Both Alcoholic and non-alcoholic options are fantastic. It is a very relaxed atmosphere. Food: Fantastic. While their "known" dish is the Maketto Fried Chicken, which is delicious, my favorite dish is the Steamed Branzino Fillet. The branzino is so so so good and moist - it is perfectly cooked. Of course, the variations of bao and dumplings are also amazing - if you go with a few people it makes sense to order all the starters and one of two main courses to share - you won't be disappointed. read more

Artisan coffee and espresso. Cool historic building. Cons: The most hipster place I've ever been, and in the pretentious way, not the laid-back, mellow way. I paid $5.50 for a latte that was about 6 oz. total - if I wanted a drink that size I would order a macchiato or cappuccino. The worst part: to use their wifi you have to register, which includes listing your "gender" - but the only options given are male and female, excluding folks with non-heteronormative gender identities. Not cool, Maketto. Why should anyone even need to answer this question to use the wifi? And for a place that presents themselves as so "hip", I would expect better. But like I said - it's hip in the pretentious way. read more

Maketto just adds to the list of restaurants, I mean reasons, why I wish i lived closer to H Street. This is amazing spot to come chill on a sunny afternoon or cool evening. Love the outdoor seating and the Vigilante coffee upstairs too. When you first walk into this place you might think you walked into the wrong spot. In the front is an urban boutique where you can pick up a fresh pair of kicks, 5-panel camp/volley hat, or anything else your streetwear heart might desire. Step beyond this and you'll enter a different world, that of seating, coffee, and southeast asian cuisine. The vibe is great here, especially on a Sunday when the sun shines in blue skies, cool breeze flows through the open courtyard, and DJ's spin real vinyl records (day of rest for Serato). I had to try the Cambodian noodle soup, which is different from Vietnamese pho we're all familiar with. This one is much more rich in flavor and fat (fat is flavor so double flavor), has fresh peppercorns, and includes grilled pork and a meat-falling-off-the-bone chicken wing (tip, wing, drummette connected). The wings were a little unwieldy to eat but they easily gave up their tender meat and skin from the bone. Pork was tender I loved how the rendered fat in the soup coated my mouth in savory bliss as I felt the rays of the sun warm my skin. I will have to return for that pho but I am equally excited to try the rest of their menu and what they offer for dinner as well. Maketto really makes me wish I lived closer so it would be easier for me to pop in anytime. This is perfect kind of place to do that. 5 stars for concept, 2 for the food. The coffeeshop/restaurant/shoe store is truly unique experience. They serve a lot of unique items like hazelnut brittle and Old Pro from Union Craft Brewing, which is beer with a 'touch of salt'. Service is friendly, ambiance is cool. Unfortunately, the food kind of sucked. My friends and I sampled basically everything from the bar menu - chinese donut with mustard sauce, tofu bowl, beef bowl, steam bums. Everything was pretty off balance and disappointing. The beef and tofu bowls, especially, were either too spicy or too ginger-y without actual flavor. The steam buns were average - you can find the same ones for cheaper at CopyCat down the street. I'd be willing to come back and try their actual restaurant and revise my judgement. read more

After hearing about the coffee and Cambodian "Pho", I've been meaning to try it now that I'm in the area visiting. I would consider myself a "PHOnatic", so I was a little skeptic, however, I came to Maketto with an open mind. As a Vietnamese-American, I wanted to see if this Cambodian "pho" lives up to the hype. Initially when you walk in, all you see are merchandise which kind of makes you second guess yourself about whether this place is a restaurant. The restaurant portion is in the back of the store. The coffee and pastry is upstairs. My boyfriend and I came in at 10:30 in search of some coffee while we waited for the restaurant to open downstairs. I got the drip brewed coffee and the boyfriend got the cold brewed coffee. The drip brew reminds me of the Vietnamese coffee made with a phin, nice and strong (no condensed milk though). My coffee was also accompanied by a shot of seltzer and a little tea biscuit. For lunch we got the Cambodian Pho and Pork Bao. Immediately you can smell the Pho, which was extremely aromatic, in a good way. You can really smell the spices that they cooked the broth with. The amazing thing is they had fresh peppercorns in the soup, which I've never seen in America. The soup is flavorful with big generously cut pork belly. Yum. However, I did wish that there were other seasonings we could've used to make it a bit more seasoned to our liking. The Pork Bao was accompanied by seasoned hoisin sauce and was also pretty delicious. Nonetheless, I loved it. Recommend it. Will be back for it whenever in the area. read more

Personally, I think the espresso and teas are standard for any modern coffee shop (this doesn't mean it sucks!) around DC but their fresh, daily baked goodies and service are what make it a huge win for me. My faves are the red velvet whoopie pie, almond croissant, and their cookies. I'm never disappointed with any of the baked pastries but I also usually walk out with more than one in hand :P read more

I only got a couple of things here- the bone marrow laab and the five spice latte, but boy were they good. I'm a sucker for spicy stuff. Spicy breakfast, spicy lunch, spicy dinner. Hell, I love a good spicy dessert if you got it. I only had a few days in DC so I went on a whirlwind food tour of as many places as I could, just ordering the most appealing thing on the menu and then going to the next restaurant. I was torn between the chicken, which seemed to get the most hype, and the laab, which seemed the most appealing to my taste. I'm happy I got the laab! It was full of flavor. Nice spiciness, good texture, and the presentation was fun. I will say that I was expecting a little bit more of the marrow itself to come through. In fact, there were a couple of tiny bits of the roasted marrow meat that I stumbled upon and when I took a bite, that roasted umami brought the taste to a new level. Sadly there were only two of those bites available, but the dish was great anyway. The latte was one of the better ones I've ever had. Super creamy and rich. We started with drinks, and ordered the Rutabaga. I thought I liked it at first, but was only able to drink half of it. I was not at all a fan. At dinner, I wish I ordered both bao options, because I was incredibly satisfied with the vegetarian one. SO GOOD. Seriously, this place should sell bao that you can bring home to cook yourself, and is the main reason why they warrant 4 stars. I'd want it every night. Dinner was okay. We ordered the stir fried veggie noodles, and couldn't finish them. They were a bit too one note, and a little too spicy. Next time I'll order the fried chicken, it looked amazing! I've always enjoyed their coffee, even if a bit over priced. This place is an easy walk from my house, so I'll definitely be back. It ended up being a standing sort of buffet for us because of our seating configuration, but I very much enjoyed the opportunity to sample satisfactorily all the food. I had to wait over an hour to be seated at a cramped counter space with 2 friends, the host didn't ask me if I preferred a table or counter when I put my name down, and half of the restaurant was empty seating. The pork buns were good, but the portion size of the coconut crudo was minuscule and the wok noodles were pretty standard, overpriced and nothing unique. Prepare to pay more for atmosphere than quality of food. More troubling was the fact that they have bins of cooking ingredients stored opposite the bathroom and a prep station next to counter seating in the open kitchen, doesn't seem very sanitary to me. read more

It was my second time here but my first time eating and I would have to say.. the host at the front ruined this exciting experience. I would have ordered the $26 fried chicken plate but his rudeness to my girlfriend's simple question of "can we sit inside" while we were being seated outside made me lose my appetite. J.Q. literally ruined our experience of this place and we will always remember it because of him. When we arrived there was a couple immediately in front of us who he told that there was a 10 minute wait who were then immediately seated outside. We told him we would be happy to sit anywhere and he proceeded to say that they were only seating inside on Sunday's. We were confused. He then said it would be a 30-45 minute wait. So we waited patiently for 50 minutes when he texted us as we stood 1 foot away from him if we would be okay with sitting outside. We turned to him and verbalized that we are fine with that. As we walked by 2 empty 2 person tables is when my girlfriend asked him why we couldn't inside and he replied with "I have to seat 'her' there" and my girlfriend asked politely "did she request an inside table?" and he abruptly stopped while walking us to our table, turned around and looked at my gf like she had 10 heads, repeated the question slowly, and said 'yes' and continued to seat us outside. We were completely fine with sitting outside, it's just the fact that he treated us as if we had intellectual disability. Rude.. just rude, it was just 2 simple questions.. just because he's the oldest person working at the restaurant does not give him the right to treat people that way. We were seated half in the sun with an open shady table next to us where no one sat until 15 minutes later. I am truly sorry if he has a personality disorder. Anyway, the service was great. Everyone else was super pleasant and the shrimp crepe was BOMB along with the pork baos. Service was speedy and I would have given a 4 stars but -1 for the rude host that seems very out of place of a very hip and chill environment. He is the epitome of a vibe killer. read more

Finally got a chance to stop by Maketto during my day off on Labor Day. I ordered the Cambodian sandwich and the bf got the Cambodian soup (or Cambodian pho). Cambodian sandwich was on point! Crispy bread and all of the meats and veggies were sync together in perfect harmony. The Cambodian pho on the other hand, was a bit overwhelming but still delicious and earthy. It's not like your typical Vietnamese pho broth where it's mostly clear. This one from Maketto is hearty and contains a lot of ingredients that are commonly used in South East Asia. If you're not really accustom to this flavors then this dish may not be for you. At Maketto you can seat yourself, order at the cashier and they'll eventually find you to deliver the food. read more

My friend and i have a tradition of meeting late Friday afternoon to catch up over coffee. We attempt to try a new spot every time but so many shops close at 3 or 4pm, oddly. We've been to Maketto a few times now and have been pretty satisfied. She's always enjoyed her latte, me my brewed coffee and the deal of a pastry for $1.50 after 3pm is pretty nice, too. The one thing we have noticed however is that the tables are always dirty. Takes forever for stuff to be cleared. Each time we've been there, whether seated inside or outside we've had to share space with previous customers' coffee mugs, bowls, etc. The only other suggestion would be a little more personality from the cashier, barista. Kind of dry. They never seem to smile. And a smile goes a long way. Next visit i may have to try the food. Always looks tasty. read more

The num pang is very tasty. I'd say they certainly compete with Num Pang's num pang in NYC. The bread was a bit of a letdown in an odd, "it wasn't bad, but it wasn't beautifully slightly crispy outside, and light but chewy inside." way. I was kind of all chewy - like a cross between bao and baguette. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the pork buns. Very fresh bun, nicely presented, prepared, and delicious. The scallion pancake was also tasty. A bit light and fluffy for me, but held up nicely to the toppings (chili?ish concoction, egg, and more green onion) very good. The place itself is a bit of a hodgepodge. Bar, restaurant, Café, apparel shop, bookstore, indoor, outdoor, rooftop.
