Today I ordered my regular beef fried rice, 6 piece shrimp tempura roll and a 6 piece eel roll. My fried rice was flavorless and mushy. The rolls were also mushy and had entirely too much rice. I had to skip lunch and I was excited for late lunch just to be disappointed by this over watered rice in my food. If you know the food isn't cooked correctly, you should make a new batch... mushy sushi rice on rolls is HORRIBLE! I would take into consideration the seating if one is planning on bringing a larger group of people, since their seating arrangement only accommodates smaller groups. Didn't live up to the hype. Sushi was dry, unpolished and bland. No more elegant than when we've tried making it at home. Udon broth tasted like chicken stock, lacking the kick and slight soy-flavor when I've had it in Japan. You check a menu, seat yourself, pay first, wait for the food. Not much interaction as far as measuring "service". Atmosphere was quirky but unfortunate. Two flatscreens played satellite TV with poor reception that froze every minute, positioned in just such a way that the echo from the two gave me a mild headache. My boyfriend and I came here during lunch on a weekday and were completely blown away by the deliciousness of this place! Doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside is a little more quaint with a small, cozy dining room and sushi bar. We had shrimp tempura Udon, bibimbap, and a Florida sushi roll. All of it equally delicious. They also have a little side bar full of goodies such as kimchi, broccoli, cucumbers, etc.. Which was an added bonus. Needless to say, we were very full and satisfied! I got the miso ramen it was pretty good but wayyyy too salty for me, but i just added water to it and it was still very good. They gave me a BIG portion of seaweed salad! The most I ever was served so that was neat. My vegetarian sushi which was just avocado and cucumber were good too. Looking at some pictures I saw indeed that this was the Japanese/Korean restaurant I had been looking for my whole life. ONWARDS to the ultimate executive summary of Maki Boi I.You walk in a. Grab some menus and seat yourself. Not many choices basically bar or table. b. Peruse the menu, be sure to note the daily special (which I'm suspicious is the same every day). Notice the VALUE of the Maki Roll and your choice of soup (which they say is small but it was a lot bigger than I expected) II. You go to the register to order a. Order UP son- I know you might be curious about those portions cause whenever I go to a sushi place I'm wary that sushi is overpriced and portion size is weak. SO I shall say, on behalf of my boy Maki, that the dishes here are fairly priced for their sizes. b. Our order included the Maki Roll special ($9) with the Spicy Seafood Soup, the Cajun Roll ($9.5), and the must order Maki Tower ($11). Three dishes was enough for both me and my accomplice which is impressive because I am a 6'4" hulking giant. Also, you have the option to order 6 pieces or 12 pieces in a roll; we ordered the 12 piece rolls to send a message to everyone that we weren't messing around. III. Dining a. You've unlocked access to the sides bar by ordering!! I was delighted to see an assortment of ginger, kimchi, broccoli, etc. Great to munch on while waiting. b. Space is kinda of secluded and has been in the area for awhile. Food is decent with a wide verity of Japanese food. The space is abit cramped but always feels busy. At the time my ex-wife and I went here and we ordered the service was ok probably because of the time of day but the food prep was abit lacking in response and the food was standard to what you think of Asian food. Visited again recently and I wondered why I had waited so long. The place was hopping busy the food was pouring out of the kitchen. The menu was extensive and offered two order sizes of sushi. Perfect. I ordered the tuna tower with extra sauces, ate with my friends and took the leftovers home. I rolled them up sushi style and had it for lunch the next day. Yummy. The atmosphere is very casual, busy and the menus is extensive I'll be back with more friends ASAP. Fantastic lunch spot. This place is small, so I recommend against bringing a large group. I was in a party of 3, so we were able to sit down immediately at the bar. There was a party of 8 that came in and were forced to wait for another party to leave the one large table this place offers. It was sometimes uncomfortable having such a long line of people anxiously watch you eat for an open spot... The setup is that you order food at the front, pay, and they bring it to you. It looks like mostly a to-go place, since there was a line the entire time we were there. You can get sides in the little buffet stand they have, and refill your own drinks. I particularly enjoyed the broccoli with sweet soy sauce. I ordered a ramen and roll combo, which was really good! The 6 piece roll is pretty filling, so I was stuffed when I finished the ramen. The rolls came out right away, but I had to wait about 15-20 minutes for the ramen to come out. I would have liked for the food to come together, but...at least I had something to eat during the long wait?? My friends had the yakisoba (really tasty too!) and the lunch bento box. This is the real deal for Japanese food. We went exploring for a new place for lunch and ended up at Maki Boy. The restaurant is tucked in a two-level strip mall, but once you walk in you forget where you are and feel like you have just gone to Japan. The wait staff are friendly and are enjoying their work. The menu is extensive and has lots of options from soup bowls, to sushi. I could not decide which one I really wanted to I ended up having the combination of udon soup and the 5 piece sushi. I was very impressed with both. From the first sip of the broth I knew that I was in for a treat. The noodles were wonderful, big, thick udon noodles and were comforting and satisfying. The chicken was perfectly juicy with a delicious sweet but spicy sauce drizzled on with a bed of rice. The green salad house dressing was delicious! The tuna roll was so fresh and flavorful. Sushi in Texas.. not my first thought, especially when a state is known to make man-made lakes.. where does the fish come from? How fresh is it?! So many questions! Typically this would turn me off already, as I did not come to Texas to eat raw fish, especially growing up in Seattle where we're spoiled with delicious fresh sea creatures! While in Texas for business, I had a chance to meet up with my sister and visit her family; Auntie Char in the house! :) They took me here as this is their family's favorite place, so I was excited to check out a place that's on their regular rotation. If you are the type of person that's all about price, then this place is FOR YOU! However, I'm the type of person that considers quality, quantity and price to determine if I like it, as a result this place is not for me. You definitely get a lot of bang for your buck, with prices like $6 a roll, $7 for a bowl of ramen, and even $0.75 for a bowl of miso soup! But for me, I felt that the quality of fish was not fresh nor tasty. The flavors were dulled down and not authentic (for example, the Korean style spicy tofu soup was not spicy and quite bland). We ordered an assortment of rolls (Unagi, Tempura, California) Nigiri platter, tempura platter, spicy ramen, spicy tofu soup, and a bunch of banchan (small Korean sides). Again, super inexpensive if you're going for quantity. But for me, this place was pretty tasteless! Maybe this is good for Texas standards, as I'm obviously biased towards Seattle's fresh selection, but this place would not even survive in Seattle. Maki Boy is one of my favorite sushi restaurants! It's one of Irving's secret weapons that you wouldn't expect in such a small town. They're a Japanese/Korean fusion restaurant. Sushi is amazing quality and at such a great price. Under $10 for most 12 piece rolls. I love their crunch roll, chicken roll, spider roll, and Texan roll. They're my go-to's. Other good ones would be the Kentucky roll-- which is just like eating chicken katsu pieces with avocado rolled into sushi form with a hoison and spicy mayo mixed dip. Also their volcano roll, although they make it a bit different here. It's not lit on fire and the flavor is barely spicy but still delicious. I like the crab and crawfish combined in their white cream sauce. Crunch, Kentucky, and volcano all have a ton of breading with it if you love breading. And they serve bomb pineapple fried rice if you want to take a fancy Instagram photo of it. A best friend of mine swears by the eel donburi. I agree it's yummy! There's also ramen, udon, and soup for the soul. With each order, every person is given a small plate for side dishes which lowkey taste better than their main food haha. They're amazing. My personal favorites would be the broccoli hands down, as well as their kimchi. For desserts, I would suggest their green tea ice cream for sure! I love the large cup of it. The berry smoothie is also delicious and the tempura ice cream is not too shabby. Atmosphere is casual date-like cuteness with their fairy lights and small cozy dining space. You can eat in the room with curtains for more privacy if you so choose. The soda fountain is A+. Has a lot of carbonation in their soft drinks. There's alcohol here as well to go with your food. I'm eyeing that bottle of Hennessey hehe. Side note, Maki changed their seats to have cushions on them. The menus are now convenient brochure pamphlets instead of the laminated menu mat. There's extra items listed if you look up on top of the checkout counter and sushi bar area. And I recently noticed a huge collection of Sriracha sauce army in the cubby beneath the soda fountain. Not many people use it, but if there are any Sriracha hot sauce addicts, there's your beautiful supply of it. read more

I was very surprised to find this place to be really good! Who would've known a little hole-in-the-wall joint would have quality sushi on par with higher end Japanese restaurants? I bet they get food from the same vendors - wouldn't be surprised. Food was so fresh and clean-tasting. When I tried ordering sashimi (yellowtail), they do it by piece, which was convenient for me. I just ordered take-out, and it was ready in 10 minutes (probably because I didn't order much). The interior was very nice and cozy, I think I'll stop by again to dine in. There was no need for the eel sauce on the side. Alright. I've been going to Maki Boy for the past three or so years now, and I'm really sad that some people seem to not have had very great experiences. Like, really sad. Yes, Maki Boy is cheap. I can go there with twenty bucks and not have to resort to desperate measures for a soda on the side. As far as I've seen, the cheapness hasn't affected the over-all quality of any of the dishes. Maybe it's because I don't shoot for the nigiri? Or maybe because I'm blinded by the all-year Christmas decor? I can't say, but I can say that I've never had a bad meal here. My stand-bys are the shrimp tempura roll with a mini-chicken bowl. Their tempura has always been perfect for me - lacy, pale golden, light, flavorful. Their chicken teriyaki is great too. I'm all for anyone that wants to use dark meat. Lately, I've been sampling a lot of their other offers, with my favorites being their bibimbop and the shrimp tempura udon (my hangover food of choice if pho is not available). They used to give complimentary smoothies after every meal, but I've noticed they've started giving green tea ice cream, which is still cool by me. I wonder if maybe my passion for this place is for the atmosphere and my sentimental attachment as much as for the food. Sushi places are getting more and more soulless and - ugh - trendy as time goes on, but Maki Boy is never changing. On my recent trip to the lone star state, I was afraid I would suffer from my raw fish addiction withdrawals. After a night of some authentic finger lickin' Texas bbq, my chopstick holding hand started twitching from sashimi and wasabe withdrawals! Will I have to settle for some California rolls made by the same guy that makes sandwiches at the local market?!
