The service was terrible. I had a reservation for a table on the terrace. It was my first time there. When I got there, I realized that the terrace was in the parking lot and it was very hot outside. I asked for a table inside, I was planning to have a quick dinner with a friend. They told me that they couldn't offer me anything, but the restaurant was empty. There was only one table occupied. For the first time in my life, I left a restaurant without dinner. I was shocked. I will not recommend this place!!!!Terrible experience . read more

This restaurant is immaculate and beautiful. The decor is very classy and elegant. We were here to celebrate a birthday and they had a happy birthday sign on the table. The drinks were so good. The mango cocktail was spicy and smooth. The mussels were to die for. These are the best mussels I've ever had. The calamari was very crispy and yummy. The Pad Thai was also very good. The sizzling northern adventure was rich and delicious as well. I didn't love the flavorful drunken adventure. It was kind of dry and lacked flavor. The service was impeccable and very friendly. The live music was a nice touch as well. It was great and not too loud. We didn't have room for dessert but would love to come back to try more dishes. read more

The experience was ruined by 3 factors: 1) the hostess 2) the waiter 3) the table given. I had a reservation for 6, upon arrival I informed the hostess about the change from 6 to 5 guests. Then she told me to wait, while she disappeared in the back, I stood at the front for over 5 minutes, long enough that the other hostess came up to see why I was waiting there like I was in timeout in a fairly empty restaurant. The reservation was made days ago and still they gave us the worst table possible in the entire restaurant, next to the kitchen's swinging door. That door was constantly in motion, the eye-irritating bright light was coming from the kitchen while the whole restaurant had a dark ambiance, and the constant commotion and loud noise coming from the kitchen made it impossible to enjoy our conversation at the table. Last but not least the waiter responses to simple questions like "would you recommend this drink if I like my martini not too sweet?" and "would you recommend this meal if I like the curry very spicy?" His response was - back to back! - "you just have to order it if you want to find out." I was shocked by the level of poor quality of service. This was definitely a one and done experience at MaKiin in Houston. read more

The place seems lovely, but parking is a nightmare (there simply isn't any) and I will not be able to review the food as I did not get to experience it, and will never bother trying to do so again - and neither will any of my friends, as I will campaign wholeheartedly against it on their behalf. Made a reservation for Mother's Day, showed up and was told that I had selected "patio" (I most certainly had not, forecast clearly said rain and anyway we don't like to sit outside, ever). Since every table was apparently "all booked up for the day" according to the hostess, who lacked any sort of grace, hospitality, customer service skills, or even the ability to make a simple apology, we were offered seats at the bar (no thanks, my mother is 80 and barstools are uncomfortable) or on the patio in the rain. We declined and left, walked across the tiny parking strip and had a lovely lunch at Beck's Prime next door. Where at least we were greeted with a smile and some show of appreciation for our business. Let's keep in mind - exactly one half of Makiin's dining room was empty at this point, even if "totally booked" as claimed, and when we walked back over to our cars after lunch an hour later, a third of the tables were still vacant as visible through the large windows. My husband, who is from southeast Asia and spent some years living in Thailand, was excited for the chance to try this place - but he now agrees that we shall never try again. Nobody's food is worth this kind of aggravation. So, if you do decide to give them a shot, be forewarned: get there really, really early because there is a decent chance you're going to be parking on the street a block and a half away - they have very little parking in front of the doors. Be prepared to have them decline to serve you anyway, if another bunch of ghosts has already "totally booked" the tables. And consider that anyplace which has so utterly failed to train their hostess on how to handle such a situation with some professionalism and thoughtfulness - can't possibly be all that great anyway. read more

Over priced Thai food. This place really needs to rethink their pricing and menu. The food is yummy but $60+ for an award winning chicken spritzed with glitter is a slap in the face. There wasn't enough food on the plate for one person and the waiter came to spray glitter (you can't even see it) on the chicken like it was something special. Chicken is the cheapest product to prepare so I was expecting a good amount it was literally two deconstructed chicken wings with purple rice on a smear of curry. The magic noodles were fantastic and there was a massive portion. I normally don't write on portion sizes because I'm a light eater but the award winning chicken was toddler sized and I don't care if they decide to wrap it in gold, it's not worth $60+. The service staff were completely unpolished albeit attentive. They had a great ambiance but I felt like they were trying way too hard in all the wrong places! I honestly don't think I'll go back on my own accord. The coconut soup was really good and had a lovely presentation but the presentation fell short on all the main dishes that we had which were the winning chicken, magic noodle and drunken adventure which were presented like any other restaurant. This place is way too hyped up. They would have been better off cutting their prices in half and being a really good Thai place instead of whatever this overpriced non-experience they've created. read more

Beautifully designed restaurant. Live music was nice but I needed to ask them to turn down the music. It was lounge music and they were blasting it like a rock concert. The service was friendly but felt a little stiff. Servers follow a script that comes off as impersonal. The food presentation is outstanding. The taste, unfortunately, is standard Thai food. You are paying top dollar for ambiance and presentation. If you're just interested in tasty Thai food, there are many better options in town. We enjoyed the cocktails, the tom yom bisque and the stir fry duck. Ordered the $60 seafood that was awful. It was 95% salty congealed noodles with 1/2 of a lobster tail that is $8 at HEB for a whole tail, a couple of pieces of scallops and other unidentifiable seafood and that was it.. I have to wonder what the $65 chicken dish is like?You can take the restaurant out of the Heights but you can't take the Heights out of the restaurant by just putting it in a prettier place and charging River Oaks prices. read more

I was there with my girlfriends for dinner and food was wonderful, so went back for lunch couple of days after. Ordered same dish and it came out overly cooked. So, the manager was kind enough to remake the dish and It was good. Third time for lunch again today, ordered the same dish and it was again not good. Service was terrible, and ambiance was awful due to multiple handyman installing lights. It is a very expensive restaurant, which means that one should expect higher quality and better service, but none of these were present. read more

We went yesterday to celebrate my husband's birthday we were greeted well . We were excited to be there as we had heard good reviews about the place service and food. Our server was sweet and friendly and explained the dishes we had questions about . We had ordered three starter, papaya salad , Brussels sprouts and curry carnival. We loved the first two however we had to wait a while for the curry carnival to come atleast 20 minutes while we were done with the first two and the place was not even fully booked . While we were being served the server behind broke a glass that shattered around my daughter and my son's feet . The staff came and asked us if they were ok and cleaned it however we were just stressed out now because we were afraid of possibly tiny pieces of glass left behind . After a while the third starter came and then we placed our order for main course . All food ordered was good. The problem started here where no one came to our table for atkeast 20-25 min after we were done eating our dinner . After my husband's patience ran out he waved at the lady who had greeted us when we walked in to let her know we have been sitting here for a while and we wanted to get the dirty plates picked up do we could order our dessert that we were wanting to try . Our reservation was for 715 and till 925 we were still waiting to order dessert keeping in mind this place closes at 10 and it wasn't full to its capacity . By the time we placed our order we were told the coconut dessert ice cream was not available. How can a restaurant run out of food knowing that this is one of their popular dessert and it's not even a weekend !!! We were very disappointed to hear this . We ordered the chocolate cotton candy and per the server she recommended the cream brûlée dessert which did not even taste like that . It was a disappointment.
