So today I booked an appointment through classpass with Charles Maksou. My appointment was for single process and highlights and what I got wasn't exactly what I expected. I walked in with an open mindset, because I've never done any sort of lightening or coloring to my hair so I was open for ideas. I ended up getting my hair cut as well which he encouraged due to my dry ends so I agreed. I thought he would ask me questions on what type of color I was looking for or what vibe I was trying to get from this haircut/highlighting but he just got right to it. I just assumed he knew what he was doing considering his resume. When I first looked at it in the salon I liked it. I wouldn't say I was in LOVE with it but it was something new and different which is what I've been wanting so I walked out with a smile on my face. When I got into the natural lighting outside was when I noticed it didn't look as good as I remembered. My main concern was the color. It was a caramel blonde and it didn't blend in well with my natural hair color at all in my opinion. It almost gave the look that it wasn't toned at all. I'm honestly not sure if he toned it or not because he didn't explain much he was doing with my hair to me. My second concern was the placement of the lightener he used, there are certain parts of it that I don't mind but there are some parts that aren't good. In the back specifically there are pieces that aren't completely blended in well. The front pieces are so much more lighter than the whole entire back and side. Like I said it just doesn't blend too well. I'll attach pictures so you can judge for yourself, but in my opinion it was done poorly and without much thought behind it. I ended up going straight to my friend (who does hair) after this appointment with Charles to have her fix the shade of it for now, because it started to bug me so much. I was told to have my curly hair dry cut due to the type of curls I have, so I made an impromptu decision to have Charles cut my hair. The salon is clean and orderly. I was greeted with a warm handshake and smile. I love my cut! It suits my face perfectly, and is a cut I would never have otherwise. Most cuts end up giving me bottom heavy hair. I now have bangs, which I was told I could never have. The right cut is everything and Charles did it just right! If I could give 0 stars I would. I went into Charles' salon once before with my mother and he stated that I would benefit from a dry cut for my curly hair.. I have been wanting one for a long time but I have had horrible haircuts in the past that make me uneasy about who touches my hair.. I decided to take a chance in attempt to feel better about a poorly done haircut prior to allowing Charles to cut my hair... I have a lot of hair that is very thick but Charles stated it didn't matter about the hair, he went with what my scalp told him and he was going to round it to accentuate my face.. except IT DOES MATTER when you have tight curls and different patterns in your hair (tighter curls on top/front and looser curls in the back/bottom) Despite my preferences stated to him about liking volume, he removed all the volume out of my hair and gave me a haircut that is not for my hair type. I was nervous about it while I was at the salon and it was still wet and felt worst about it once I arrived home and it dried. Once Charles made recommendations of relaxers and keratin, to make my hair more "manageable" and loosen my curls, I knew the mistake I had made. If you cannot value a clients preferences and likes no matter the hair type, you are in the wrong business. I have came a long way from a past of relaxers and blow drying my hair straight because I could not love my curls.. so now I will have to put my hair in braids and updos until it can grow out again. Dry cuts are the best. I am the kind of person whose hair looks entirely different when I style it compared to when the hairdresser styles it, and dry cuts are the solution. But this is even better, because Charles used a technique I have never seen before, which resulted in very natural layers. Normally you can see the lines of a haircut. I call this a "haircutty haircut." And Charles gave me the least haircutty haircut I've ever seen. It looks great curly and straight. The price, for me, was a little high, but I have the feeling this cut will look amazing for months. Yes, my hair is long - and long hair can go longer between cuts - but the way he did it is unique. What an experience! Having recently moved from Manhattan, I was hard-pressed to find a salon that could deliver the same quality haircut I (fortunately) have become accustomed to. Charles exceeded all my expectations. He masterfully shaped my frizzy curls to frame my face perfectly (I've had true haircut horror stories in the past!), and the result is as close to perfection as my hair can get! I've lived in Boston for five years, but was back in New York often enough to stay loyal to my stylist of many years at Marie Robinson... until the pandemic hit. After 7 months my hair was comically long and the ends looked like an old broom. I figured it was time to find a local salon. A friend raved about Charles and I arrived with high hopes. I should have walked right out when I entered the messy salon to see him finishing up on a shell-shocked woman with an extremely dated feathered 'do. But, alas, I stayed. I told Charles I wanted a bob and showed him a photo, nothing fancy, just simple and modern. I told him I wanted to donate my long hair to Locks of Love and it was my understanding most salons would send in the hair. He looked at me like I was unwell and told me to send it in myself....ok, fine. When he heard that usually got my haircut in New York he began a winding monologue about the genius of his technique / how he uses light and geometry / that he used to be on television and would like to be again / that the man who trained him cut Jennifer Aniston and Demi Moore's hair, etc. As he bragged, an early 2000s-style may-I-speak-to-the-manager version of what I had requested was emerging atop my head. He could tell I was less than enthused and his bragging soon turned to excuses: "it's because you had me cut it into ponytails for the donation / the woman in the picture you showed me has a different color hair / you style it different at home / are you Jewish? I have many Jewish clients and they are very sensitive about cutting their hair"(!!) Even after I told him several times that I usually wear my hair short and it was only so long because of the pandemic he insisted the problem was just that I wasn't used to it yet. Finally he asked me for a picture of how it looked when it was short. The moment I pulled up my Instagram he told me the way I had it in the photo was all wrong for the shape of my head. Finally claiming the real issue was he's "not a bob guy" (information I would have loved to have when I walked in asking for a bob!) I held out hope that once I washed and styled it myself it would improve. But alas, weeks later I look like the unholy love child of Kate Gosselin and Marcie from Peanuts, which I resent far less than all the reasons Charles gave me for why my dissatisfaction was not his fault. Even though I told them I wanted to grow it longer, they always cut it short and said that was best. Now I work in Boston I have been going to Charles and he does amazing work. I am so upset right now been along time since I've cried because my hair was so bad . I have to say last year I got one of the best haircuts I ever got from Charles and this year one of the worst . He doesn't have enough help he was running from client to client not focused on any one person and he butchered me it looks so bad little teeny pieces close to my scalp where I look like I have bald spots I have to wear a hat it looked pretty good when I left because he blew it out it was nice and smooth but I sweat at night and when I woke up in the morning OMG I cried when I saw my hair it looks frizzy and dry and awful it was sticking up all over the place. Charles is truly a rarely gifted artist styling hair. Most any place you go stylists will cut your hair according to how they learned in school and don't have much ability to expand and create. They know some basic current styles and what style complements you, but that's it. Then they cut wet, which creates variable results. Charles is just amazing to watch. Strand by strand he shapes your hair. He pioneered the dry cut here. He cuts according to how your hair grows and flows and according to your face and head shape and what looks best to complement you. But he has the rare talent to use his imagination and to execute what he imagines. That takes ultimate confidence. The results are precise because he cuts it dry. It's the only way you can see and shape the hair properly. He's been cutting my wife's hair for several years. Anywhere she goes even hair stylists will marvel at the cut. They know. She says no one cuts like Charles. Best of all, the hair grows out properly and looks great with each passing week. He also cuts my hair. I have had a couple of hair transplants. I was completely bald on top but now have very decent density. I used to go to barbers and hair stylists and always looked older because my hair on the sides and back looked thicker, because it is. They cut it all wrong and backward. Charles now cuts it and makes it the exact same density all around as the transplanted top. Today I finally found the person I've been looking for to cut my hair! I have very thick curly hair, that I like to blow out smooth. Charles cut my hair like a true artist! I never had to even tell him what I wanted, he immediately looked at me, and told me, what I needed. He told me what kind of hair I had, and how it should be cut. He also told me it was too dark, and lightened it up with very natural looking highlights. I'm 60, with a fair amount of gray. Charles told me that moving forward, with gradual highlights,I should be able to get my hair colored every 3 months, instead of every 4 weeks! I started going here in 2018 and Charles' haircuts are unlike any other haircuts I got in the past 34 years. I have long straight hair, the easiest to cut I would think. However, it also ends up always looking the same regardless of where I have gone. I've had haircuts at dozens of places in multiple states I've lived in. I have almost always been disappointed, as it still looks straight, long, and heavy. However, I am now a convert to dry cutting. Instead of spending 1 hour in a salon, with half the time spent washing and drying my hair, Charles spends the whole time cutting my hair. It may seem like there is no rhyme or reason to how he is cutting, but at the end I am pleasantly surprised. He certainly knows what he is doing. I don't bring in pictures of what I want my hair to look like. I let him choose my haircut and I have not been disappointed. I remember bringing photos into salons when I was younger and the result would never look similar. Here you will feel like you actually have an expert who can do sophisticated work. The way that the hair is cut usually means I have a lot less hair, but the hair lays wonderfully. It is expensive, the one downside, but I only get mine cut a few times per year and you do get what you pay for. At most Boston salons, you can pay a similar price for a cookie cutter haircut. I definitely recommend trying it - you will wonder why you ever went somewhere else or why you had wet haircuts in the past. read more

I really wanted to like this place since I have been looking for years to find a decent dry cut for my curly hair. After getting two blowouts with Michaela, I decided to get a haircut with her. She's extremely friendly and accommodative. However, for my dry cut, she first flat ironed my hair and then spent well over an hour cutting it. Unfortunately, for my hair to be dry cut, it needs to be cut curly and not straight. Once I got home and washed it and allowed it to dry curly I noticed the right side of my hair had really short layers and the left side had long layers. I had to go back and have her fix that. When I did go back, she made excuses saying she was rushed when she cut my hair. She never mentioned that at the time and she spent more time cutting my hair than any other stylist I've had. And, no one wants to hear they felt rushed whencutting their haI will definitely have to find another salon that can actually cut curly hair. read more
