While in town we tried this food joint out. Our waitress was very nice, the atmosphere was enjoyable and the food was great. We will definitely go back and would recommend to anyone thinking about trying this place out. I love, love, love, Thai food, and just before eating here I thought to myself I had never had bad Thai food, some better than others but never bad. so we gave this place a try, I guess I jinxed myself by saying that. It wasn't terrible, the portions are big and the food "LOOKS" like Thai food , but doesn't TASTE like Thai food. I've been eating Thai food my entire life and if you blind folded me I wouldn't have known I was eating Thai food. The drunken noodles just tasted salty, oily and like soy sauce, the pad Thai didn't taste like Pad Thai and I didn't get any Thai flavors except for the mussel appetizer - that was good it had coconut milk and lemon grass flavor. The service: ther was something about my waiter that I just didn't like him he was like a mean girl trying to be professional, but his inner mean girl was still showing and I wasn't digging it. Eventually he finally got his moment and to be rude when he came and practically yelled out my card was declined. I know that I had money so I asked him to run it again he said he had although he hadn't left very long before he returned to declare I had been declined. One of the best Asian restaurants in Dallas in my opinion! My husband and I love coming here for dinner and have taken our family and friends from out of town here multiple times. The food is amazing, and they have a lot of specialities that you won't find anywhere else in Dallas. We were waiting for a while and had 4 different waiters/waitresses which in turn we had to put our drink (just waters) and food order in multiple times to multiple people and we still had to wait for everything. My friend picked Malai Kitchen for dinner this past Friday night, because she lives right across the street, and, to be honest, I wasn't expecting much. It wasn't my favorite meal of the weekend, but it was much better than I expected, and I did enjoy the food quite a lot! We arrived around 9:30 pm on a Friday night, and it was still quite busy. Luckily, my friend had called ahead to make sure there would be a table for us, and we were seated right away. The service throughout the meal was good as well. For starters, we ordered the grilled Satay (peanut, turmeric, bourbon marinated chicken with chili relish) and the curried crab dip (lump crab, coconut curry, chilies, egg, kaffir, ginger, and shrimp chips). The satay was great - the chicken wasn't dry at all and the marinade was very good. The curried crab dip was also great. I could eat those shrimp chips all day long. I shared entrees with my brother so we could try more of the menu. I ordered the drunken noodles (fresh jasmine rice flat noodles, spicy chopped tenderloin, bell peppers, Thai basil), and he ordered the Vietnamese Barbecue Pork Ribs (half rack with ginger soy glaze over green curry noodles and a green papaya slaw). My friend is vegetarian and got their red curry with tofu. My friend's curry had amazing flavor, and I would have been glad to have that as my own meal. The drunken noodles were so delicious (quite spicy when ordered medium). And the ribs were HUGE but also great. There wasn't anything I didn't like. They also serve house-brewed beers: a Vietnamese lager, an Asian style Pilsner, a peach tea wheat, an IPA brewed with lemongrass and ginger and other spices, and more. I tried the peach tea wheat, which was really great. My friend swears by their cocktails, which she is what she ordered. All in all, it was a great meal. The portions are quite large, and if I go again, I'd love to go with more people and get to share more things. As it was just the three of us, we ordered WAAAAAAY too much food. This place is really good. A bit hipster, but not necessarily in a bad way. None of the foods have the typical flavoring, which makes Malai Kitchen unique in the area. It seems to me some of the unique flavor comes from the obviously very fresh ingredients, and partly that the chef seems to just put a different twist on to well known dishes. All dishes come with complementary sticky rice, which is the stickiest rice I've ever had! When I've been here before with kids, they love the sticky rice, and I think it makes a great opener when trying to get kids to try new things. Today I had the Pad Woo Sen (sic), which is a favorite of mine. The fresh tomatoes are nice, and the noodles are piping hot! I really like how the chicken is cut into various sizes from large to nearly shredded. This helps to make each bite a little different. The eggs are whipped to the point where you taste them, but rarely ever see a chunk of eggs, which I think is nice. I asked for the dish to be spicy, but either that didn't get conveyed to the kitchen, or they forgot to add the spice. It was still very good, so I felt no need to send it back. Surrounded by the shops of uptown, the atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect. The food came very fast, almost too fast; I hadn't even finished the sticky rice. The server (I was seated at the bar) today wasn't very attentive in refilling my water, and had to be prompted. Overall this is a very good place, and I highly suggest it. read more

Trying to venture into different food categories, so me and my boyfriend decided to give this place a try. The atmosphere was nice.. I tried switching it up with the green egg noodle curry but I didn't care too much for it and asked them to take it back, I think it's more of a preference thing! We ordered + Thai iced tea (good here, the right amount of sweet) + beef pad Thai (way too salty. We got the medium spice and it was an excruciating blend of spicy and intense salt. Too much soy sauce. I've read other reviews that say the pad Thai is too salty here but it doesn't seem like the concern has been addressed) + mango sticky rice (served in a half a coconut! Yum!!! Malai Kitchen came highly recommended and I love Vietnamese food so naturally had to try it. Definitely ended up ordering from there 3 more times that week. My go tos are the Spring Rolls Shrimp, which are fresh, come with the right dipping sauces, and delicious and the Vermicelli Salad with Shrimp. They give a good amount of shrimp and the ratio of toppings is perfect! The Imperial Roll in the vermicelli salad is also delicious. To make sure you get those veggies in, the Burmese Green Tea Salad is also delicious and relatively authentic. The Cucumber Salad should've been good considering how simple it is, but the one I got was really unappealing. Also ventured over to the Thai side with the Pad See Ew with Tofu and Veggies which was decent, but a tad burned and not as delicious as the Vermicelli Salad. I got the jalapeno basil margarita (jalapeño-infused Malai's Maestro Dobel tequila, lime, agave, tamarind, basil, hawaiian black lava salt rim!) and the mekong mule (Hangar One vodka, ginger beer, cucumber, mint, lime, thai basil). Cocktails are $4 off for happy hour! So worth it. I absolutely love the spicy marg here. I also tried some of my friend's Thai PA (brewed with lemongrass, ginger, galangal, kaffir lime, cilantro, turmeric, coriander and five different american hops). Very refreshing. For food, we got the complimentary sticky rice, edamame, and crispy beef samosas. Loved the samosas! Can't go wrong there. We were sitting in the patio area, as the weather was pretty nice and it's fun to people watch! I did get a few mosquito bites, though. Although the food and drinks were great, we did have a bit of trouble with the service. We had to waive our waitress over to our table several times to remind her of our drink orders, to bring small plates for sharing, and to ask for our check. I visited for lunch on a weekday. I was greeted right as I entered and offered a choice of a booth, seating at the bar, or a table outside on the patio. I ordered the drunken noodles with shrimp and chicken. They are made to order and they let you choose the level of spiciness. After I ordered my server brought out sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf with a spiced eggplant purée dipping sauce. It was fun and quite tasty.
