This was my first time trying Malai Kitchen, and I was not disappointed at all. The service was amazing, along with such a nice interior. The menu has many selections that I didn't even know what to get at first! I highly recommend going here to eat, because I'm usually picky with Asian food but this place was GREAT!! Overall the restaurant is ok. it's a very aesthetically intimate and there's a nice bar in the middle if you're looking to get some cocktails. The service was good as well. I would say that the food looks better than it tastes, but it was what I expected for an Asian restaurant in downtown Dallas. The waiter recommended the jumbo seared scallops on top of pad Thai and he did say he thought it was the best pad Thai in Dallas. The scallops were good, not over cooked and had a nice crispy crust on the outside. The pad Thai however was a solid ok in flavor. The drunken noodles tasted a bit burnt, and the tea leaf salad was alright (I'd recommend trying it at a Burmese restaurant because it didn't accurately represent the dish). I did wish the papaya salad had more flavor and spice to it like in traditional Thai style. read more

I am not a fan of giving bad reviews, especially somewhere that I have heard such great things about. However, my experience at Malai Kitchen was not good. We went on a Saturday night around 7:15, so of course it was busy. There was a 25 minute wait, but we were lucky to grab 2 open seats at the bar. The bar was busy, but the bartender was nice. We ordered somoas to start, then I ordered pad thai and my bf ordered lemongrass chicken. My boyfriend has had several items on the menu and has really liked everything in the past. He was also pleased with his lemongrass chicken order this time. However, this was my first visit to Malai and I was very much looking forward to my pad thai since I had been craving it for a while. I usually choose chicken as my protein, but i was excited that the default was shrimp (other Thai places seem to upcharge for shrimp). However, i was disappointed when my dish came. The whole thing tasted burnt. There were some char marks on the shrimp, but it overpowered the whole dish, so much so that i could only eat 1/3 of it. Maybe the wok hasn't been cleaned in a while or maybe the chef just overcooked my meal, but i also had a stomach ache the rest of the evening. It didn't seem to bother my bf because he took home my leftovers, but I'm disappointed that my craving was ruined. Unfortunately, Malai would not be the first place that i recommend for thai food. read more

We "found" Malai while in town for a wedding and ducked in for dinner the night before. Ate at the bar and had the best drunken noodles and crispy noodles! Also loved the Hanoi Highball and Malaysian Martini. Their presentation of mango and sweet sticky rice for dessert was awesome. We went back the next day for lunch (a rare thing), and Reed and his crew again did a terrific job hosting and feeding us. I highly recommend Malai if you're ever in the area! read more

We visited last Saturday night, just as Dallas was beginning to open some restaurants. After being in seclusion in Ohio for the last two months, just being in a restaurant with music, activity and great scents felt amazing. Beyond just being out, though, the staff at Malai Kitchen maximized the experience. They were very attentive and helpful in making menu recommendations, and all of their recommendations were excellent. We started with their version of the Moscow Mule and two of their delicious in-house beers: the Peach Tea Wheat, which is an American ale that is brewed with green tea. It is cloudy, like a classic Hefeweizen, and is very smooth. The beer that I had was easily the most unique beer I have ever tasted. Thai-PA was a minimally hoppy, refreshing beer with an amazing blend of ginger, turmeric, lemongrass and coriander, among others. For the food, we started with rice appetizers and a just-spicy-enough dipping sauce. We also shared shrimp spring rolls, lemongrass chicken (my favorite), and basil vegetable fried rice with chicken. The lemongrass chicken was the perfect blend of flavors, and left me satisfied, but not stuffed. I had always wanted to try Malai, as we have walked past it before, and am so glad we dined here. If you park in the garage next door, you will probably smell the restaurant as soon as you are out of your car. read more

If you're a true pho lover, this may not be the spot for you. The ambiance is lovely, and the place smells amazing, but it doesn't quite feel like a traditional Vietnamese restaurant. The menu leans more towards Thai flavors with a hint of Vietnamese influence. The pho broth was a deep brown which was more unusual to the more common clear broth and it lacked flavor, and the noodles were overcooked, becoming sticky and mushy. Despite this, the staff was incredibly kind and understanding--they let us order a replacement meal at no extra charge. read more

The shrimp spring rolls are fresh with really yummy rice paper. You can tell that they aren't made until you order them, unlike some places where they prepare them in advance and get dry. The portions are big too. I love the sticky rice that they bring before your meal. It's a nice touch. The bean sprouts in my vermicelli bowl were also very fresh! I've ordered the Wednesday lunch special every Wednesday since the beginning of December. I fell in love with it the very first time I ordered it but I neglected to remember the name of the dish I just know that it's a noodle dish. I call today to order my usual Wednesday day lunch with extra beef and mistakenly say drunken noodles. I pick up my order like usual and I go to work around the corner. I get to work and I have something that is not the Wednesday lunch special. I call back and let them know there must've been a lapse in communication because I ordered the WEDNESDAY lunch special. The lady on the phone was adamant about me ordering the drunken noodles as if I neglected to say the WEDNESDAY LUNCH SPECIAL. I was willing to come back and exchange what I was given for what I wanted but she said I would be charged for the new dish as well. I also asked if they kept a record of the call-in orders because if they did she would see that I've ordered the same thing at the same time for the last month on Wednesdays. I was very disappointed in the customer service especially since I said WEDNESDAY LUNCH SPECIAL multiple times. Update: Still no accountability taken so it seems that this situation is my fault even when I said THE WEDNESDAY LUNCH SPECIAL multiple times. Since yesterday was such a gorgeous day for a change in this crazy March weather, me and my best friend decided to venture out to West Village to enjoy the nice weather al patio. We decided on Malai and since I had never been before I was excited. I was a little overwhelmed by the so many choices by our server Norma was so nice, friendly, attentive and helpful recommending choices. She was giving us enough time to think and brought our items promptly. She chatted with us a little bit here and there and made us feel as if we'd been regulars. That made us feel really special. She brought our bottle of wine and asked us if we liked it, after they brought our entrees she asked if it was everything we expected right away. I'm sure she would've brought us something else if we didn't like it. But we did, my friend had the lemongrass steak and even when I don't eat much beef these days, I loved it. Also, the sticky rice they serve is pretty tasty, so try it. My entree was the basil chicken and even when I don't normally eat a whole plate, I ate it all, even when I had ran the Katy trail before dinner. I thought I pretty much deserved it all. After eating all of it, I thought I could it the mango sticky rice but didn't go for it after all since I had no space because I was so full. Maybe, I'll have to do it next time, because for sure, we are coming back. This is the perfect brunch hangout or late night drinks and dinner place. I'm so excited and glad I came. The only thing that ruin my experiences was that I ordered pineapple fried rice with chicken but only got pineapple fried rice without chicken. I did notify the server and she told me that I didn't order that. Clearly, I told her I wanted with chicken and She suggested if I want chicken on the side. We've been here a few times and I thought I had already left a review. Today's experience made me come back to Yelp to check. Their food, drinks and service are consistent and we always enjoy our time. I've had their curry, butter noodles, Branzino, pork ribs...ALWAYS good. Servers are always attentive and friendly! We have never had issues with getting seated and getting our food in a timely manner. Today, we came in with our 3 kids after soccer and in athletic attire. There was a snafoo with the manager (I think) and the series of events made me upset, especially on Mother's Day weekend. And we weren't dressed like their target market so..you know, optics...didn't help with the perception of the string of interactions. I won't elaborate as the snafoo was not the important part. It's the Manager's response. He corrected the issue, apologized for the inconvenience and made sure we were pleased with our experience. Sometimes there are misunderstandings. It's part of life. But I have the utmost respect for the person who can look at a situation from someone else's perspective, apologize, make adjustments, and make sure everyone is happy. And with that, even though we started out upset, we had the most redeeming, delicious experience ever and left with higher regards for this place than before.
