Malai Fried Rice no peas and no baby carrots

So this is maybe my 4th or 5th time trying this spot since I moved on this end of town, over the span of a few years. I was never wooed enough to write a review but after my last order , I have to say, it was review worthy. I am a huge fan of Thai food and have tried hundreds of spots across the United States and even in Thailand. So when I say I am a critic, I am a critic. Tonight we won't with the Pad Thai and Malai fried rice. By looks there was nothing special, but the flavor was really surprising tonight. The rice looked like it was going to be mushy, but it wasn't. I am glad I was able to experience what I had read in so many other reviews. I will definitely try again because now I am interested in the consistency.

The restaurant is located on a busy main street with some parking along the building on the side street. The interior decor has a nice personality. It's unfortunate that the dinner meal for the red curry not only costs more, but doesn't some with rice. I got the red curry with crispy chicken, it's a must to get a side of rice, to absorb the curry. The curry has a nice creamy taste and the crispy chicken is the perfect combo. The pad Thai with tofu was also good with good flavor.

Got Thai Noodles (egg noodles with fried tofu in Green Curry) and Pad Ki Maw (with chicken) for takeout this time. The pickup service was prompt and ready on time. The food tasted good. We are used to eating spicy food so had ordered Spice Hotness level "extra 2" which was a bit hotter than expected, "extra 1" level would have been a better personal choice for me.

Lots of great reviews here I see but I wasn't all that impressed. My husband and I ordered two different dishes but basically they were the same thing just different meat and different sauce. The presentation of the food was very nice. We were the only ones in there the whole time but they did have a big table for Grub Hub, etc so they might do big take out orders. It was very clean inside and they did have lunch specials which were very affordable but it wasn't for me. I ended up giving half of mine to my husband to eat.

    Perfect vegetarian dish! Yum!

Delicious vegetarian options! And yummy iced Thai tea!!! Quiet peaceful restaurant! Excellent service!

Great reviews here but I wasn't that impressed but probably I ordered the wrong food. We ordered Thai satay beef, Thai wings, crab rangoon, hot and sour soup with chicken, and spicy lime pork. The satay beef was flavorful but the peanut sauce was too watery and the cucumber sauce was bland. The Thai wings seem over fried and still juicy but the sauce is too salty but my friend said too sweet. Nothing special for the crab rangoon but is my favorite. Hot and sour soup does not taste like tom yum soup in other Thai restaurants, considered bland. Probably tum tom talay is similar but the ingredients are a little different from tom yum. Last, the spicy pork lime salad is refreshing and spicy because of the raw garlic and chili. We probably will come back again to order the dishes that we usually ordered at other Thai restaurants.

    Massaman Curry with White Rice

After hearing so many good things about this place we decided to give this place a try. We ordered the Pad Thai with beef and Mansaman Curry with chicken and a side of white rice. We ordered for pick up and the lady was quick and friendly. We were estimated for 15 minutes. When we got there, there was parking on the right side of the restaurant. We were the only ones in the parking lot so we didn't have any problems with finding a parking spot. Mansaman Curry is literally my go to order at any Thai place. In my opinion, you can't really go wrong with Mansaman curry... Malai Tai Restaurant's Mansaman curry was good but super watery which isn't my favorite. Besides the curry being super run down with water, I have no other complaints. The Pad Thai with beef was delicious and flavorful- exactly what we wanted. We would be returning, but won't be getting the curry again. So many other dishes to try out anyways! I can't wait to be back..

The inside has a really fun upscale lounge vibe with colorful lighting, floral decor, hanging lanterns, and a huge centerpiece tree that makes the whole space feel almost like you are dining in a tropical garden. It feels trendy and lively without being overly loud, which made it a great spot for both dinner and drinks. For drinks, I ordered the mai tai and one of their mocktails. Both were well presented and came in beautiful glasses. The mai tai was refreshing, balanced, and not overly sweet like many places make them. The mocktail was also excellent and felt thoughtfully made rather than just tasting like juice. For food, the short ribs pho was fantastic. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the portion was generous with tender pieces of meat. Definitely one of the better pho presentations I have had in the area. I also ordered the sizzling steak pate with baguette, which came out hot and smelled amazing. The steak was tender and savory, the egg added richness, and pairing everything with the fresh baguette made for a really satisfying dish. Overall Monkey Lounge delivers on both ambiance and food quality. It feels like a hidden gem if you want somewhere with strong date night energy, aesthetic decor, and Vietnamese fusion dishes that actually taste as good as they look. Would absolutely come back again.

He apologized and said it would be out shortly. 10 minutes after that and everyone was done with dinner and it still hadn't come out. We told him to cancel the remaining entrees as dinner was over, he said it would be out soon. We said no thank you, please take it off. He brought it out anyway. We took it reluctantly. It was not very good, but we had a bite or two. I was shocked that he then proceeded to drop the entire bill without any migration or even a gesture. In my experience in a similar circumstance if you're the server you do something to try to make it right. I dunno maybe take off a soda or bring out a free slice of cake if not take something off the bill. Just felt pretty amateur. All we got was some vague excuse about the kitchen being renovated. That's something you should tell a large party when they're ordering. Anyway we've been doing this dinner at different restaurants across the country for years and this night was unfortunately the first time we've had a bad time like we did here that night.

We walked into a space with a cute, unique quality to it, and the menu covers a wide range of Thai dishes including ramen, curries, noodles, and rice dishes, which gives a table with different preferences plenty of directions to go. The pad see ew and basil fried rice are both solid orders that cover familiar ground competently. The noodles on the pad see ew had decent wok character and the basil fried rice was well seasoned and aromatic, though neither dish pushed beyond what you would expect from a good neighborhood Thai spot. The mango sticky rice is a satisfying finish and the sticky rice texture was on point, though the mango itself can vary depending on the season. The Thai tea is well made and a natural complement to the spicier dishes on the table. Across everything we ordered, the food was consistently good without being particularly memorable, landing in that comfortable range where you leave satisfied but not necessarily thinking about it the next day. For a weeknight dinner close to home it works well and the portion sizes are reasonable for the price. The menu is large enough that there is probably a higher ceiling to explore on return visits with some of the more distinctive options like the khao soi, tamarind wings, or crispy duck. Service and pickup accuracy have been inconsistent based on different visits, so dining in tends to produce a smoother experience than ordering out. As a neighborhood Thai option in Needham, it fills the gap well enough.
