This is a nice old fashioned candy shop with an ice cream shop in the back. The review is based mostly on the candy shop although the decor is a sight to behold throughout. Especially the seating area and ice cream shop decor. The store is filled with treats year round as well as seasonal specialties. It's been a great place to find some holiday treats. I have enjoyed most things that I have gotten there but the chocolate is a little too sweet in general. So, I will splurge on some single pieces from the case but some of the other things have not been as great. Notably, my chocolate dipped oreo was too sweet and buckeyes purchased as a gift received the same comment from someone pretty well versed in buckeye eating! So, that's why the limited stars. There are plenty of tables to enjoy your treat, and it's fairly open inside, plus the chocolate display. I personally love their chocolate covered pretzels but they have so many different options for chocolates. Beautiful confectionary/sundae shop in downtown Lakewood! The entire place transports you to Wonderland from the movement you walk in the door, which makes for a charming experience. The flavors of ice cream are somewhat limited and not as unique as the nearby Mitchell's, but the location is nice because it's in a walkable part of town. I've never been to the original location and it was so much more than I expected! The store itself is already huge, has a candy counter, an insane amount of product that I've never even seen at Malley's. There's a separate ice cream parlor area that is just the cutest little thing. BF and I ordered at the ice cream counter where the server was so helpful and friendly. There were a lot of flavors but was hoping there would be fruitier options. Ended up choosing the PB s'mores but would pick a different flavor next time. It was too sweet, too plain vanilla-y and not enough of the graham cracker crunch I was expecting. My BF got greedy and got 2 giant scoops in a waffle cone and could not finish it, lol. I moved from Cleveland to Huntsville Alabama. I order Malley's to show them what is possible. They all are very impressed with this chocolate., I gave some to our IT guy that takes good care of our team. He came back and said, "that is not kid's chocolate!" Yes, it is amazing! 45 years of eating chocolate myself, I have found none better. The last time I came to Ohio I went to the Cleveland store and Bill Jr welcomed me personally. Went on for National Sundae Day. This location was huge. They had a lot of variety of ice cream and chocolates. I ordered a banana split, two vanilla hot fudge sundaes and one peanut butter cookie something hot fudge sundae which was dairy free. They were very busy. I watched as one guy made the banana split (looked fabulous) while one girl made my peanut butter sundae. I asked her if that was mine since I saw her getting regular instead of dairy free. I mentioned mine was dairy free not regular. She said than it's not yours and kept getting it. She then put it next to my banana split. The guy bagged the order. I mentioned that I was short one sundae and that I asked for dairy free peanut butter (allergy) and that it wasn't. The counter girl came over and mentioned it was suppose to be the dairy free. To preface, we will definitely be back during more regular hours to hopefully get a more uplifting experience. We showed up a half hour before close, it was my first time here (just moved to the neighborhood). There were 1-3 tables sitting and enjoying some ice cream when we arrived. The place is big! There's a lot of space and a lot of candy for sale in half of the shop, the other half containing tables, booths, and a bar. There was no wait, no line, we ordered a double scoop and a shake. The reason I'm not super impressed yet is because the service was pretty lackluster. For just a double scoop and a shake, it took probably 10 minutes to get our stuff, despite nobody else waiting for food/ice cream. I watched two workers put on gloves to make our ticket and then walk away. It wasn't until a third person came out from the back, saw the ticket on the counter, asked someone else if it was made yet, to begin making our stuff. The ice cream wasn't anything special, it was good and as expected. Seems like the kind of place that gains bonus points for a goofy goober Weenie Hut Junior type of atmosphere (which I love! don't get me wrong). I usually love this place but I went in there the day before Easter in the late morning early afternoon, and the young dark haired counter girl with glasses was visibly frustrated and began taking it out on me. She did not greet me she sighed rolled her eyes asked what I wanted and I politely asked for dark chocolate almond bark she said okay whispered something under her breath to herself like I was inconveniencing her then asked me again because she wasn't listening I told her again then asked what size I said what ever the smallest you have is, she then rolled her eyes again and proceed to whisper something under her breath again cashed me out, and started packing up the order as dark chocolate almonds and I stopped her and said I asked for the bark she then rolled her eyes and started yelling to the other worker what she should do. she then goes well I already checked you out for almonds not the bark like it was my fault. The older lady worker came over and stopped her and said just give her that instead it's okay. And then threw the box down on the table and rushed me out. I understand it was a holiday and she was stressed but her attitude and customer service was atrocious and she should have been taken off the register until she was able to act appropriately. I asked the cashier why, and she said the store was being remodeled. I asked if there would still be an eating area once construction was done, and she said no, just more merchandise. I loved dipping pretzels in chocolate sauce while you wait for your order to be prepared, but especially loved the vanilla ice cream. However, during my most recent visit I noticed the ice cream containers looked different, and the ice cream flavors changed. I inquired and was informed that they've changed to Perry's ice cream as their distributor. You can tell a difference. They still make amazing chocolate and hot fudge sauce. read more

The store is huge and decorated with photos all around the walls. Although they are temporarily closed during this Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease pandemic, you can order chocolates online. CHOCOLATES -- When my friend Ami and I walked into the store on a Saturday evening, we were greeted by a friendly store associate. She gave us samples of different chocolates to try. My favourite was definitely the Bordeaux milk chocolate. The toffee in this is absolutely delicious. The website describes it as "Decadently rich English toffee with almond bits is enrobed in our real milk chocolate, then each piece gets rolled in a crunchy chopped almond topping..." After trying different chocolates, I bought a small box of chocolates to go which came with 4 pieces in a pack. I also got 1 packet of marshmallow chunks (2 chunks inside) and 1 classic CLE chocolate bar. The marshmallow chunks did not taste fresh but the chocolate bar was good. Overall, the quality was good. PRICE -- I think the chocolates here are considered gourmet so the price isn't cheap. Some of the bulk items are over $17 a pound. I recommend trying the smaller pieces or the chocolate bars as a more affordable option. The "CLE" chocolate bar is just over $1.00. I noticed that some of the chocolate ingredients have "artificial flavour" in them and I try to stay away from those ingredients, at least 90% of the time. I prefer natural products. Next time I visit, I will have to find out what chocolates are natural. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here and I rate it between 3-4 stars. I have visited this Malley's location the past years while visiting my boyfriend's family in Cleveland since we usually stay around the Lakewood area. He used to bring them back to California quite a bit, and my favorites were definitely the pretzel chocolate bars, and the nutmallows. I like baking with their large chocolate bars as they are easy to break apart and melt. We occasionally like the sweet slips as you could get a mixed variety of "imperfect" chocolate for 14.95 (or 9.95 when they're on sale) and if we're feeling adventurous. This location has an ice cream parlor which we've gotten their ice cream once. We got the buy one get one free sundae (peep their wrappers for that coupon). Their sundaes were really big as if they were a meal. I could probably do away with a single scoop of their ice cream in the future. Always a must-stop when visiting the area. It makes me so sad to write this review. If you look at all of my other reviews of all Malley's locations, they are a solid 5 stars all around. As a native Clevelander, I was practically raised on Malley's. Had it in every Christmas stocking and Easter basket growing up. Add even after moving to Columbus for undergrad, coming to Malley's for a sundae was always my favorite thing to do when coming home. However, two stars are being knocked off because Malley's is under new management. They recently got bought out and if they keep operating the way they are now, I think that this classic Cleveland staple won't be around much longer. I am obsessed with the hot fudge sundaes here and walked into the Lakewood location with my brother-in-law on a Friday night at 8:40p (exactly 20 mins before close). As we were walking in, it started POURING outside. We walked up to the register and placed our orders for our sundaes. I paid and then as we were walking to grab a table, an employee said "Is this for here or to go?" I said "it's for here." He immediately turned to his manager and said "hey are we still taking orders for dine in?" She looked right at us and said "no." To which he turned and said "Oh sorry we're not doing dine-in orders anymore." SOOOO many things that were annoying about this!! For starters, why would they not ask me that BEFORE I paid?! Also why in the world did he ask me "is this for here or to go" If they were no longer doing dine in? I immediately changed my countenance and said "Okay well you should have told us that because it is pouring outside and I'm not taking ice cream to go in the rain. Also, online it said you close in 20 minutes so I'm not sure why you're not taking dine in orders." They immediately changed and said "oh ok you can dine in here because it's raining." Ridiculous! If they would have said no, I would have asked for my money back. I ended up getting my sundae (which was for sure a 5 star delicious sundae) and scarfed it all down so that we could be out by 9pm. But between this experience here and a few bad ones at the Bay Village location, I can tell Malley's is going downhill. I find the employees to be unfriendly, unhelpful and poorly trained. It makes me sad-- I wish they would not have sold! Also, they just posted on Instagram that they are no longer serving ice cream outside of summer months. I feel like this is the beginning of the end of Malley's ice cream as we know it. So sad the Malley family sold this Cleveland gem. :( read more

SO DISAPPOINTED. I was raised on Faroh's and my husband on Malley's. After Faroh's closed I was forced over to Malleys. They had two products I liked --- their fudge sauce and their sugarless cashew chocolates. Otherwise I found the flavor of their chocolates no better than Braches or Hershey. Moved to Florida and while on a visit back north, decided to pick up some of the sugarless cashew clusters only to learn they no longer make them! So bought some pretzels (which my husband likes), a jar of sauce and a handful of other chocolates from behind the glass. Spent $97 which was ridiculous, but understanding everything costs more these days bagged it up and went on our way. At least the pretzels were good, but the selection of chocolates were, quite frankly, not much better than movie theatre Goobers --- and they were mis-labeled! I selected both milk and dark chocolate covered pecans and cashews, and most of the pecans were actually hazelnut! The sauce seems like maybe it was an older jar as it had a skin across the top and tasted like grainy, sugary chocolate flavored something. Needless to say, we won't be back. read more

Love this place for a special treat. So many chocolates and candies to choose from. Before we picked out the treats we were taking home with us for my nieces birthday, we enjoyed some ice cream treats at the counter. It was a wonderful experience. We had a root beer float and mint chocolate ice cream. Yummy! We had a hard time choosing what we were going to buy to take home because there were so many options - Buckeyes, pretzel rods, popcorn, gummy bears, brittle, you name it- it was there. All the chocolate!! Had to come here to see if it lived up to its reputation around Cleveland. The staff was so patient and welcoming as we were trying to make our decisions. We were able to sample different chocolates and get their input on what was popular and their personal favorites. I was ecstatic with all the choices of dark chocolate available to the milk chocolate counterparts. This would be a cute place to go for dessert or to satisfy that chocolate craving. They have so many different kinds of flavors with different types of nuts. Try and calm yourself before filling up boxes of chocolates and leaving with $30 worth of sweets for yourself. The only drawback, in my opinion, is the price. That being said, a box of assorted chocolates from here would be a great gift for someone special or even as a sincere thank you! read more

Seriously, how have I never reviewed this big pink place? It is such a local, it just screams Cleveland! I love what is inside these gigantic pink walls. When Sweetest Day was invented by Ohio confectioners to provide love, care and chocolate for invalids, homeless, poor, and poverty stricken individuals, I'm pretty sure Malley's was one of the key players to step up to the plate.
