Been wanting to try this place since we moved to Scotts Valley a short while ago. Went last week. First and last time. Called ahead to make reservations. No reservations unless your party has at least 12 people. Didn't hit the minimum, so asked what the busy times are. 6:30 and 7:30, we were told. Showed up at 5:45. Tiny parking lot was full, and neighboring lots specifically state "No Malone's Parking", so we parked across the street. Host was friendly, and seated us right away. Waitress came after a short while, and took our drink orders. Drinks came after a short wait. Everything's a la carte, and it ain't cheap. Two of the meals - our daughter's gnocchi, and my single, $23 pork chop, were OK. Not anywhere near great, not bad. My husband had the $29 NY steak and a caesar salad. Waited and waited. Finally asked if the salad was going to come out before the steak. Waitress said it would, and then 30 seconds later, here comes the steak AND the salad. Rejected the salad. The steak, while properly cooked, was nowhere NEAR hot; if the glob of butter on top hasn't even started to melt, that should be a good clue to the cook or server, no? Also, they apparently haven't heard of bread at this place; none was offered. Sometimes we like Outback. Sometimes we like Ruth's Chris. At either place, you get what you pay for. This was NOT Ruth's Chris, aside from the pricing. We know what's reasonable, and what to expect. This place is absolutely, totally, mediocre. A decent steakhouse in this town could make a killing. read more

Worst service ever. Went with Some friends. Got told multiple times we were her last costumers and she kept telling us they close at 7pm. When we arrived at 620pm. We got told 4 times we were her last table and she needed to close our tab. Then she tried to charge 18% gratuity because our bill was over 100$ after she gave us the bill. Had a very frustrating experience here on Saturday. We came in between lunch and dinner at about 3 PM for a quick late lunch with the kids. After ordering, we waited for an hour and 15 minutes for the food to come out. It was obviously an extremely and unusually long wait and the kids were miserable. Our waitress did not express much concern or apologize for the long wait. The kids were miserable. No real acknowledgment or offers to make up for it in some way. This was my second time at this restaurant and while the food is pretty good, we have had really long waits both times. And, with the lack of real customer service - I doubt I will return. Some recognition or gesture on their part would have gone a long way. We understand that things happen at times. read more

Well, sorry to say it but we won't be back. Do yourself a favor and just skip it - it's expensive and the owners are positively NOT interested in customer service. Servers are instructed to say NO to every request and not allowed to switch out anything that a customer does not like. Not blaming the folks who work here however I am writing this review to save others from wasting valuable time and $$$. These owners are not likely to change their policies anytime soon so let's do them a solid and not patronize their shoddy business. read more

Wow, I am very disappointed in my fellow Yelpers. Malone's exceeded my expectations tonight. With only a 3.5 star rating, I nearly passed on an opportunity to dine among the trees with a fire-lit backyard patio, tasty chili spice Mai Tai's and habanero margaritas. The fish tacos were very underrated and really went the distance with some extra spicy chipotle sauce. Overall, the service was first class, quick, high quality food and exceptionally good. 5 stars for Malone's - don't judge this one by the "average" Yelp rating. read more

So glad there's a new casual dining place close by. They have a great outdoor patio and indoor dining as well. My honey and I shared the prawn ceviche which was fresh and tasty served with tortilla chips. I had the Hitchcock burger. It was really a good combination of flavors, burger, pineapple salsa, fried onions and nice smoked bacon in a brioche roll. Just enough spice. My honey had Godfather burger. Pesto, mozzarella, bacon and spinach. Also delicious. They were cooked just as requested. Our sever, Hanna was really sweet and helpful. She checked in with us just enough and had some good recommendations. I'll tell friends about this place but not too many. I don't want another overcrowded place that I want to hang out! read more

Came here for lunch, ordered the steak salad for $18. Got four very small pieces of steak, 3 dime sized pieces of beets, spinach and carrots. A very poor value. Very good taste but not worth $18. Will not be coming back for lunch, very small selection of food. Also, the Thai chicken salad bowl was a very poor value. read more

I've been to Malone's a few times and have always sat in the dining room at the request of some I go with. I've been in the bar, it looks like it's old and dirty and not clean at all so I wouldn't want to sit in there anyway. In the dining room it tries to play an upscale game with the decor, menu, and prices. The place needs a serious modern makeover. The old school red leather chairs need to go! But let's move on. We are welcomed by a host and seated at the table. He lays down menus and asks us if we would like anything other than water. We answer him and he walks away. A waitress walks up as he walks off and asks us if we would like anything other than water.. We answer her and let her know that we also told someone else. She walks off and we look at the menus for a few minutes. The water arrives and a third person comes along and asks us if we want bread and anything other than water... Just wow... We finally order and the food was alright. The waitress was nice enough but stood really close up to the table and therefore was REALLY close to me.. Uncomfortable.. I tried the green chile soup which had potential for good flavors but was sadly bland. Hello salt and hello pepper!! The Prawn Cobb sandwich was pretty good. I couldn't finish it because it was pretty big and not with much shrimp in it. Two other tables walked in while we were eating and at some point any waitress was nowhere to be found. I hawked for one and finally got someone's attention. The bill took time to get and when the waitress finally walked around the corner to deliver it she throws it down without a word and turns to help another table. Gee.. I guess we don't get any more nice service after getting our food. We never saw our waitress after that. So, ok food but haven't had much here, crazy old decor and menus, a little pricey for what you get, and not very good service especially since it was really slow. read more

I've been going to Malones for years ; food got better when it changed ownership but the service has gotten worse and worse. I sat at a table by the fireplace to have dinner and after 10 minutes of people walking by me (including the manager) I ordered my own drink at the bar. After another 5 minutes of no one coming to take my order I stopped someone and asked how I was to order dinner? He checked with the manager and told me to order from the bartender when he brought my drink. I waited another 15 minutes and then went up to the bar to see if they forgot about me. I stood there for another 5 minutes and couldn't even get their attention. I told the manager on my way out that I had been there for over 30 minutes and waited 20 for a drink which never came so I'm leaving NOT happy with the service. All he could say was "sorry about that, we're really busy." I don't think I'll go back. read more

Ordered a delicious hamburger and my date ordered some tacos that she enjoyed. I will say that if you are having me pickup takeout....some napkins and utensils would be great to include! Given that the hotel also didn't have any, this became a messy meal pretty quickly and seemed like an easy oversight to be corrected. We have been back here a couple times since our initial visit under new ownership, which was a very good experience overall. The place has just about everything going for it. The subtle but necessary tweaks new owner made to Malones were just what Scotts Valley needed. Bar food is killer. More Bar than Grill. By that I mean options are slightly limited. The food was, okay. Service on the other hand was quite nice, and we were never left waiting. When we got there at about 4:30 (they open at 4:00), there was basically no one there. Yet the wait inside was supposedly an hour. We chose to be seated immediately outside, and when we left after about 45 mins, there were still very few people there. First timer, out in the area for work, ate at the bar to watch a game, got a pretty pricey meal. Meal wasnt bad. However, I'm trying to watch the game, cant hear anything, playing loud music, and they finally turn the game up halfway through. I have a budget, the meal itself is over budget, i tip what i can, and the bartender/waitresses are complaining. I believe I heard, "I'd throw that in his face." "Make him change it." A tip isnt mandatory, they were ungrateful. They feel they needed a 20 dollar tip for serving me a coke. Anywho...... this was my experience. Wish I could take the tip back. The food here is amazing. The service is pretty good. However the few times that I've been here there has been something that went terribly wrong. The first time we waited 45 minutes for our food to be served, then we waited for another hour to receive our bill. The second time was better our food was served quickly but we had to ask for the bill after 20 minutes of waiting. Then another 15 minutes for the waiter to grab the bill and charge our card. The last time everything was perfect except for our food. Both orders were made wrong and I sent mines back. They brung back my exact plate that I sent back and said that the issue was fixed. It wasn't. The item was taken off of the bill with no hassle which was great. I'm disappointed that as good as the food is I always walk out frustrated. After three bad experience I will not be returning. read more

My family and I had dinner at Malone's. It was not our first visit but it will be our last. The steak was cold, unusual because it took a long time to get served. The prices were high, as in $17 for three pieces of battered fish and chips. We were charged for every small change even though we were told it was fine to substitute one side for another, as in $6 for two fruit cups instead of french fries. I ordered a dinner size ceasar salad and was charged $3 extra for romaine, not to mention the one crouton on top. We ordered the salmon plate to go and were told the chef doesn't want to prepare that dish for take-out even though we had a meal there for 5 people. The topper was no bread. They no longer have bread available AT ALL even for a price. Needless to say we will not be revisiting this restaurant. But heads up to our server - he was very attentive. read more

I ordered a French dip and grinch burger. The French dip was good but the burger and fries were terrible. The burger looked cool with the M logo branded into it but it went downhill from there. We went the Malone's after a porsche tour at Canepa. It was highly recommended by the staff there. The four of us ladies split three burgers and a salad. that was just right. The burgers were really good in fact. the rest of the entrees was a little pricey. The avocados fries are a must get. It was my favorite item on the menu that I tasted. read more

This place is KILLER!! We came from out of town and hands down this was the best place we went. Insanely good prices for very classy, well presented DELICIOUS food and great service. I've been here several times with a good friend of mine that lives close by. We threw a Cookie swap/wine party here last week and I had a great time. When you come in, there is a bar on the right side playing the latest sports game. That night we were there, there was live music which was nice. To the left is the restaurant part. We were able to snag three tables in the bar area and make it a casual dining experience full of appetizers and wine. I ordered the chicken quesadilla with my friend and shared some potato skins with another. Loved all of the food and everything came out quickly and hot. Service is wonderful here. The nice waitress kept calling us "Love" when she addressed us and that was really sweet. She was sincere and treated us really well. I've only experienced the bar area of Malone's but sometime would like to try their restaurant out. Drinks are great and they are not stingy on the alcohol either! read more

Thanks Deven. After a nice Thanksgiving holiday, we were all pretty much over turkey. We're new to Scotts Valley. So we ventured out and stopped at Malone's Bar & Grill. There's a restaurant next to the bar. We were the first to show up. Very nice restaurant inside. Classy. We were promptly seated and drink orders taken. Deven was very knowledgable on the menu and specials. To be quite honest, everything looked so d*mn good. My partner and I couldn't make up our minds for rib eye or Fred's French Dip. He ordered one and I ordered the other and we split. The best of both worlds actually. Both excellent dishes. But I have to say, Fred's French Dip, I may not be calling it the right name exactly, was incredible. I'll definitely be back. The garlic mashed potatoes. Yum! Stopped here on the way home from Santa Cruz and saw that the reviews were mostly positive. The burgers were good, but not THE BEST BURGERS EVER as mentioned in other posts...sorry Malone's. But I will say it was a good burger. They also had some interesting soups on the menu that caught our groups eye. The chipotle tots were great as well. Service good. Food good. More than once during lunch, someone at our table muttered "what the hell is going on here?" Normally this would be characteristic of a bad review, but in this case, it referred to the waitress, who, while was all over refills, orders et al, certainly had her own brand of quirk. Was she like that with everyone? Did she just see us coming and know we were easy going? Who knows. Lunch on a Sunday was quiet. We sat in the bar and had burgers and beers. The menu was simple; burgers and sides, most burgers rounding out to the $9-12 range. When mine hit the table, I could have mistaken it for two burgers on their own, not just one cut in half. Mine was cooked medium, fairly standard fare, and the juice form the burger had begun to soak into the lower portion of the bun. Thumbs up. We stopped by for St. Patrick's Day and were very disappointed. We ordered two Guinness and two "house reds". We were given two Guinness and two "red" beers. I realize it is St. Patrick's Day, but since when is a "house red" a beer? But, it happens, except that they wanted to charge us for their mistake! Then we ordered the Irish Nachos ... and out came a plate of french fries with a little bit of corned beef and small amount of cheese. If was a pretty weak attempt, but a healthy charge of $17! They didn't even bring napkins or forks (we were sitting outside in the area they set up for the event). All in all, not a good showing. read more

We have been going here 5 or 6 times this summer/spring. I used to be a restaurant manager at a "nice" chain that emphasized quality service, good food, cleanliness and sanitation, real training, etc. So I am perhaps more aware of what to expect than the average customer. I especially like their hamburgers. They claim to make their own grind of 3 cuts of beef... chick, short ribs, and one other. Prawn cobb sandwich is excellent also. The staff is generally pleasant and most are actually personable. The deck is very nice, even on a warm day. It was soooooooooooooo good I wanted to save some so I could enjoy the rest at home.. Our Food Came piping hotttttt and the service was impeccable... I keep trying this place for happy hour but the scene just isn't there. I don't blame the bar. The drinks are great. Food is great. Bartenders are great. Where is everybody? It's a great date spot on the outdoor patio though. Best patio in town. Owners are nice. Rooting for them to bring in happy hour scene. read more
