Love this bar. My friend and I stayed at the hostel upstairs, so this was where we started and ended every day we were in Vancouver. The food was decent, and the drinks were moderately priced, but the staff here made everything worthwhile. Super cool and super nice, they treated us like long time friends by the time we left. I like the variety of TV's and the place is big enough for some after work drinks, but the service is just the worst. When it is empty or full food takes for ever and the servers never check on you. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I had a fantastic time while visiting BC on my honeymoon. Our favorite place to go while there was Malone's, and I have to say that François was the most incredible bar tender. I am not sure why this has a lot of negative reviews. They've added more space. It gets really really busy. Oddly it was really busy on a Thursday night as I came here after a gallery opening to get some Mexican. Customer service was decent although slow 'cause of the crowd. Been to Malone's a few times now to grab a few drinks. Many on tap are from the local microbrews and they have a wide selection of my favorites. For that, it will keep me coming back. Prices are reasonable for drinks. Have tried a few of the appetizers and they too provide a fairly decent choice to go with a brew. read more

I wasn't that crazy about Malone's menu to begin with, but when I was recently I was told by the waitress there that their menu has been modified to be more in keeping with the popular trends in nutrition - (maybe to some kind of low fat, vegetable rich thing thing? - who knows, maybe even some Vegan sympathetic thing?) - but she suggested it in a way that I thought it might be a step in the right direction and I was willing to give it a try. But what appeared on my plate before me was disappointing. I ordered the fish and chips - but what I got was no BAR fish and chips but a healthier alternative that wasn't that great and which I felt was being rammed down my throat with no other alternative being offered - I have always thought that bar food was good food - but it was my experience that the food in Malone's food was that it was not that great - and so I went there quite seldom. Now they are advertising a new chef and a new menu but for me this seems to be a change in the wrong direction - a trying to guess and conform to what the public wants relative to whatever current trends are gripping it - here's my suggestion to Malone's - forget about such b.s. and simply provide the most delicious food that can be provided. read more

Great beer selection! The food is mediocre though. I like the atmosphere as well.

Went there at Thanksgiving after hiking for hours with some friends. OK, I was starving and dying for a cold beer, so they would have to make an effort to make me dislike the place, but I think it's a good place anyway. To start, they have a nice (and large) selection of beers, at acceptable prices. The food menu also seemed very interesting. I wanted to order half the menu, but ended up being conservative and ordering a burger. The burger took maybe a little too long to come (or maybe we were starving and couldn't wait), but was a very nice burger, with a large side of home-made fries that were also good. The service was also good, and the waitress that served our table was very nice. Keep in mind, however, that the place was basically empty. Also, they have a pool table and they were showing a NFL game in a large screen. And in the weekdays they have trivia nights, karaoke nights and other events like that, if you want to do something that's not just stuffing your face full of food and alcohol. All in all, it's a place that made me pretty happy in a time of dire need. Would go back. read more

I have been coming to Malone's for the past couple of years and I always loved the atmosphere, the quick service etc..Last nite I went to Malone's to watch the hockey and took some friends who just arrived from the UK. We went to the bar and picked up some stools and one of the bartender (guy with loads of tattoos and piercings) starting shouting at us telling us that the seats were reserved. I was so taken aback by his tone which was definitely not professional and his attitude that we decided to leave the place alltogether. I am 30 years old and no one has ever talked to me like that. I wanted to talk to a manager but couldnt see anyone there, so I thought I would share my experience. This really put me and my friends off and I dont think I will ever put another foot in the place. read more

I have the same comment as the other fellow who mentioned the debit card problem. There's something really odd going on in this place. I ordered a couple of drinks after work one day and at the end I gave the bartender my debit card only to hear her say, "oh, our debit machines don't work up in this part of the bar" ( this was in the lounge area although they seemed to be working fine just 20 feet away in the main bar), "you'll have to use our atm downstairs." I said "no I don't feel like being charged an extra $3 to pay my bill." I said, "I'll use the debit machines in the main bar thank you." She seemed very put out by this but walked downstairs to get the machine anyway. Why she didn't do this in the first place seems really suspicious to me. I made a comment to the manager that if you guys don't take debit then you need to put up a sign or tell people when they come in. I didn't even get an apology just this comment: "We don't actually take debit cards for purchases under $15." I've NEVER been to a bar that operates like this. Maybe these guys make extra money off the debit machines in their bar or something but I can tell you I'm never going back there again. read more

Service was terrible and the back part of the pub stank like rotting wood. We waited 30 minutes between drink orders so we missed most of happy hour. The place was not very busy and most of the tables looked upset. We ordered a pizza that had little pepperoni but was absolutely covered in sauerkraut, the crust was under cooked and soggy. I'm here everyday for my after work beer, usually at the Side Bar. Love that they have awesome microbrews that change all the time, and they are offered on special. None of that Kokanee crap, just good clean microbrew! The staff is great, and it's my fav spot for a cold one. read more

Just a real terrible experience. Don't go yo this pub!! The service was slow and rude, and then the bill came for 22 dollars. I put down 15 and my friend had a twenty. A little stupid leaving 35 for a 22 dollar bill but that's what we did. After 15 minutes still no change so I went to the bar to ask about it. The waitress came back and slapped two toonies on the table and walked away in a huff. When I went to the bar to ask about it they called me a liar and ordered me and my friend out. Boy you guys are tough... this place had awesome nachos. Delicious fresh guacamole, salsa and sour cream, chips are also made in-house. Admittedly it is $17 with $3 for guac, or chicken or beef, but the plate is huge! I'd say tastier than Steamworks'. And they pile tons of cheese, tomatoes, olives and jalapenos on, unlike some stingy places. I talked to a girl that was eating here and she said she is a nacho connoissuer (her expression) and she said they were amazing. So there you go. The servers are down to earth and nice, and I like the interior, it feels so comfortable. It smells really strongly of beer though, kinda stale, and when there is live rock music here, it hurts your ears. At least it hurt mine. It's really busy and has so many different crowds in here.. not a sports fan so I don't enjoy their TV's, but someone reading this might. It's a great location and it feels like a really down to earth place, if you ask me. read more

Venue had potential but the service was brutal. Within the three hours of being there only saw a server once. Even decided to come back later in the night hoping that it was a one off and had an even worse experience. This rating will probably not deter the average person from going there since it is a downtown/hostel situated restaurant but hopefully it will compel the owners/servers/bar staff to want to do better and strive to a higher standard than the garbage they are swimming in. read more

Popped in for a burger and a beer nov 24 around 3 pm. I had ordered a BC burger, second bite into my burger i hit bedrock! It seriously felt like biting into a pebble sized rock. I intially thought I cracked my tooth because it was that hard. I was not able to finish my burger. I called over the waitress ,she was great and sent the manager over. The manager, however, was not so great. I told him this shouldn't be in my burger. He immediately cut me off saying let me explain what the hard cyrstal in my burger is and went on like he was reading off a meteorogy hardness scale, still no idea what it was, and didn't care. At the point I was just wondering if my dental was up to date. He said he would knock 20% off. Now i assumed the 20% would be off the whole bill but it was only off the burger which amounted to a whooping $3.20 off my bill. If i had lost a tooth it would have cost me way more to fix it. I was never offered a new burger.In comparison, last month while visitng boston pizza a month ago took 15% off the whole bill for just bringing the food late. On the plus side, the waitress was great and the beer was nice and cold. read more

I don't get all the bad reviews for Malone's. In my experience drinking here and eating here have been fabulous. Its always a nice atmosphere and the people working there are great. One bartender in particular gave me some of the best service I can say I have ever had. I think his name was Jason and he made me a special drink which I have no idea what was in it but it was the best drink i've had and now all i want to drink when I go out is that. Ill definitely be going back just for that special drink :) read more

Friends and I were in downtown looking to find a sports pub to watch the NBA Finals! The first one we walked into was next to a hotel and it was showing only Soccer, nah not this one. We ended up at Malone's. Walkable distance from Granville station or Waterfront Station. It's quite impressive, lots of HD flat screens everywhere and spacious. When we walked in it was pretty quiet for a Sunday night, just another group near the big screen. Pretty much no one is watching basketball here! That's why the Grizzlies moved not enough of a fan base here. We got a nice table right in the front of the big projector. It was nice. Tried out the food here got an entree of organic chicken with some mushroom sauce smeared on it and a generous portion of tasty mashed potatoes and some vegetables. OKC lost the game sigh... and the guy in the Dwayne Wade jersey pumps his fist and high fives the Heat fans at my table. read more

I guess everyone has a different experience. We got there just before happy hour closed and the waitress was quick to get our drinks and use happy hour prices. She came back several times to check on us and when we decided to get appetizers, she brought the menu and got our order in right away. She was busy but stopped to answer questions about the game on TV, and was knowledgeable about the proper pouring of beer from Ireland. The poppers (friend jalapeños and cheese) were great, and hot. The beer cold and well served. Service was outstanding and there were large crowds there. So I would go back again. read more

I highly recommend Malones. For the past few years, my daughter and I have met for some billards downtown every Wednesday. We always go out for a beer and a bite to eat afterwards and after trying numerous places close to the pool hall, we went to try out Malone's. We have returned there every Wednesday for the past 6 months. The food is great, happy hour specials are attractive but the main we reason we return is the service, more specifically, Irish Brian. He's a super nice guy and an excellent server. My kid and I look forward to going back there to see him every week. read more

Very good beer but customer service is really horrible , I went there friday and there was a brunette waitress looking like she didn't want to work at all.She was horribly stupid with everyone at my table , we were 12 people hoping for a good night but turned out to be a BIG disappointment.Maybe it was just bad luck , but I won't try that bar again. read more

Stopped in for a quick bite while working downtown for the day. Was seated quickly and offered drinks to start. Ordered wings as an appetizer, they were tasty especially the teriyaki flavour. As for the main meal, ordered the chicken burger. Unfortunately it was a little dry and tough, like it had been reheated in a microwave which was too bad as presentation was good. Stopped by for lunch today. I don't usually order a burger - but felt like it today. I got the Mushroom Swiss chicken burger and my husband got the Cajun chicken burger. Both were amazing! The house salad is sooo good! Greens, quinoa, goat cheese, avocado, strawberries, nuts and delicious dressing! The beer selection is quite extensive and lots of local choices!
