My son has been attending karate classes at Maloney's Martial Arts since March of 2022. Classes are twice a week with an optional Friday for those students who missed a class during the week or want to receive extra training. Master Jerry and his wife, Angelica, could not be better role models for children and adults. Took a mom's self defense class here today with amazing instructors led by Jerry and Angelica. I signed up for the class through a school event with other parents. They teach you the basic moves: how to stand your ground, a firm core, and moves to use your body strength to fight against incoming attacks. The most important lesson they teach you is prevention! Environmental awareness, situational awareness and making sure we don't inadvertently make ourselves victims in the first place! They also reinforce to go around the world with good and if you live your life with good intentions and good actions, good will surround you back. Again, amazing instructors, effective lessons. 1 year update review: Last year I decided to take advantage of the Mother's Day one month free special at Maloney's Martial Arts. Prior to joining the only regular physical activity I got was running after my active one year old and six year old. I was definitely yearning for doing something that was for me and as a child always wanted to take karate, but never had the opportunity. When I learned of the Mother's Day Special thoughts clouded my mind like "it's too late for you to get into karate", "maybe it's not the right time", but after talking to other moms who had joined decided to sign up. This decision has had such a positive impact on my life, not only physically, but mentally and spiritually as well. Physically, I am the healthiest I have been since having children, I am more flexible, have better balance and stamina. Mentally I feel much more balanced as well. I have learned to better control my actions, my words and my emotions since joining. This has helped immensely in my home life as well as my parenting. Spiritually, I have grown and have a better understanding of the things that I am in control of. I have learned to put more positivity out into the universe and to take time and breathe before reacting to a situation. Overall, I am a much healthier, happier version of myself than I was prior to joining Maloney's Martial Arts. If there are any women or moms who are on the fence about joining I say take the plunge! When our son started elementary school, we looked for a sport for him to have as an extracurricular activity and upon recommendation of a family friend we went to Maloney's Martial Arts. Even in that first class, it was obvious that Jerry loves what he does. He was patient with the kids without talking down to them, and the kids clearly respected him and the studio. Love Maloney's Martial Arts! Middle school is not an easy time period for kids. My son started attending here when he was in 6th grade, at the beginning of 2020, and I immediately noticed a shift in his attitude and engagement. I won't say it was a miracle cure, but it was close. As a family, we had visited other martial arts studios over the years. All of them felt big, cold, impersonal. Not so here, Jerry has a kind, mentoring nature that permeates the studio. We are not an overly competitive family and this studio fits perfectly with our philosophy and approach to life. My husband and I are "Seniors" both over 70. We recently started a class geared towards older adults at the suggestion of our son and grandson who also train there. It has been great. Master Jerry runs a great class for kids of all ages. Our nine year old started a few months ago and really loves the classes. It is a very calm, low pressure environment, but still has the discipline and structure you would expect from a Karate class. Almost starting from day one, he was sparing with other students and learning all the basic punches, kicks, and blocks. We think this is a great environment to encourage kids to stick with the training for a lifetime, instead of just a few months. I was looking for something fun to do that would help improve my balance, flexibility, stamina and self confidence. What I got was a lot more. I've been training/teaching here for 16 years now & I love this place. The root discipline is Kenpo but Master Jerry Maloney has tweaked certain areas to form more of an American kenpo style. It's a great place for the kids & part of the curriculum stresses positivity & respect for others. Martial arts can be a great way to help build confidence and strength in kids (and adults), but when you have a shy, gentle child, the classic approaches can be overwhelming and off-putting (I know from having visited several other programs with my son before settling here). Jerry has taken his courses to a level that keeps it fun yet teaches real-world discipline and skills. Throughout the classes he works on emphasizing values such as honesty, discipline and hard work.
