This is a Chinese brunch type place that you never thought of going but would be missing out if you didn't go. It's quite a large place and they can accommodate a lot of tables and even larger family tables. I rarely see the round tables that are regularly associated with large dim sum establishments back in the day. The interior is nice and bright. Lots of greenery even if it is fake. The food is good and delicious. Some dishes are better than others and it takes time to figure out which ones to get. My only complaints are (1) parking and (2) slow service. Parking is a bit limited when you want to be close to the restaurant. When it is busy, it really shows. It can be a bit tough to navigate. I would suggest parking farther away just for peace of mind. Slow service was because the place was busy. We were seated where the server had to take care of 2-3 of the larger tables and we didn't get our rice or a refill of water in over 40 minutes. Summary: We ate there so you don't have to. You are welcome. If Mama Chang is supposed to be a celebration of Peter Chang's family cooking and hospitality, then what a cold childhood it must have been with an underwhelming lack of affection. From arrival to getting the check, you know you have three jobs: Order something, pay for it, and leave. Though I think the staff prefers you arrive and then leave to avoid the messy middle bit of taking orders and bringing things back. Come eat here, don't eat here, it is all the same to the staff. My dinner companion compared it to a "meh" cafeteria. Loud and staff that utterly avoids your gaze lest you want something. The buss staff rumble through the dining room with dirty plates and dishes. I am aware of this because they stood 6 inches behind my chair chatting for several minutes. As soon as we sat down we were told entrees would take at least an hour. Take out was doing a brisk business as we watched bag after bag of items head out the door. No worries, we have often made dinner of just appetizers at restaurants because they are usually a good mix of things and fun to share small plates. They arrived in due course by a server that then fled like we spotted her from a wanted poster. Appetizers are supposed to be that. Whet your appetite, get you excited for the mains. 4.5 stars. Really enjoyed our visit! Came in on a Saturday afternoon, close to the end of dim sum service. The staff kindly let us know but still allowed us to complete our order--really appreciated that. We had the 1/2 Peking duck (not part of dim sum), which was fantastic--crispy skin, flavorful meat, and perfectly served. The cucumber salad was initially underwhelming since I expected a soy or chili element, but it was just garlic--and by the end of the meal, it ended up being one of my favorite dishes. Super refreshing and deliciously garlicky. We also tried the dried noodles (I think that's what they were called?)--so good. The shrimp rice rolls were my usual favorite and did not disappoint, and the shumai was great too. Everything tasted just as it should and totally hit the spot for dim sum. We did not have a great experience. We came in on an early Saturday evening and were promptly seated, but then the waiter did not come to take our order for the next 10 to 15 minutes. The waitress also did not understand the menu well and could not answer most of our questions. Oh my god!!!! This is the best Chinese restaurant in Fairfax!! Food was delish! Ambiance is so romantic & modern (honestly, I felt like I was in Crazy Rich Asians)! Service was superb! This place is my go-to for Chinese food in the area. There are so many amazing dishes like the roast duck, ganghood fried chicken, grandma's sizzling pork belly, and more. Make sure to also order it with a side of fried rice and/or lo mein. The service is always very attentive and the food comes out unbelievably fast sometimes - even when busy. I paid my order 15% (this is lunch and I did Not get any service), and I did not want to pay any tip on my take out dish. So I separated them at the beginning. Our service was smart. Great place for dim sum and other entrees too. Went here for a Sunday brunch. Good thing we got there right when it opened because it gets pretty long wait when we left (around 12:30). We got a ton of different dishes and all were pretty darn good. The only thing I didn't like was their soup dumpling. The wrapper was just too thick and the soup didn't run when you bit into it. So it's basically just a dumpling and not the soup kind. The rest of the dishes, I would rank like this (from eat to pretty good): bamboo fish, siumai dumplings, bean curd pork, Peking duck, bubble Scallion pancake, egg tart, Mongolian beef. Good but a little over-hyped. Went yesterday with a friend. We had two apps: the scallion bubble pancake and dry fried cauliflower. We enjoyed both of them, especially the pancake. My friend ordered a pork belly dish; she said it was good but not outstanding. I don't eat meat so I ordered the pan fried noodles with vegetables. The serving appeared large, but it was a large serving of noodles and little vegetables. I would go back but would not order that again. We had to wait for a table since we did not have a reservation. They served us a glass of wine and a beer in the front area as we waited since there is no bar. Service was excellent. Everyone was very friendly, food came quickly and was piping hot. It did not disappoint. We got several items that were recommended from other Yelpers like the duck spring roll ( no pics as they disappeared too quickly), soup dumplings, bubble scallion pancake, braised pork belly with tea egg and golden mountain beef. All were delicious. We also got the numbing beef, it was definitely spicy and a bit on the dry side so I would skip that one next time. We also got a salt and pepper shrimp which was also excellent. Food is very inconsistent- the first time we ate there the food was incredibly good. The next 2 times were literally like being in a different restaurant?! We won't go back! It did come out one by one, whenever it was ready rather than all at once. We started with the scallion bubble pancake, I thought it was interesting but I probably wouldn't get it again. I enjoyed everything else a lot though! The pork belly was king of tangy which was interesting, but still pretty good. I loved the salt and pepper shrimp and the soup dumplings. I took my family to taste it today! When we entered, we found that there were many people in the restaurant. We were sent to one side of the hall, and two new guests came on both sides. However, after ordering, the waiter never came back. Because I was a small customer, the big customers next to me were served until they finished eating. Came for a Valentine's dinner on a weekday night, and it was quite busy. Thankfully we made a reservation so we got seated quickly, highly recommend making a reservation beforehand to skip the busy queue. The inside of the restaurant was decorated with Chinese New Year decorations and was well-lit. We ordered the scallion bubble pancake which came with a curry sauce. The pancake was hot and crispy - I recommend ordering this if you want a light appetizer before the rest of your meal. The pork soup dumplings were full of flavorful broth, and the dumpling skin was thin yet didn't break easily. The dumplings were delicious on their own and even better paired with the sauce! We wanted to order a vegetable so we went with spicy garlic eggplant. Not too spicy but very flavorful - would recommend ordering a side of rice to accompany this dish. The beef rice noodles took a while to come out but I loved the bounciness of the noodles and the beef was nice and tender. I wish the noodles came with bean sprouts and more scallions, but I still recommend this dish! There are a lot more dishes on the menu and I will definitely be returning to try more! read more

Parking: there's a good number of parking spots, but it can be quite filled during peak hours. This place has a lot of people, which means a lot of cars haha Seating: there's a lot of seats indoors, especially for large parties. They have the large round tables to seat like 10 people! Food: tbh I wasn't a huge fan of the food. It was more authentic Chinese food. The food had a lot of different kinds of spices and vegetables. My friends really liked some of the dishes, but personally, I'm not a huge fan. Bathroom: when you walk into the restaurant, the restrooms are on the right side. It had a simple bar and both bench seats and chair seating options. There were couple of big rooms for large reservations. We ordered pan fried chive with shrimp. This was honestly my favorite food. Steamed shrimp dumpling was nothing out of the ordinary. The two dumplings were stuck together and tore when I tried to separate them. The mapo tofu had a real kick and made my mouth numb. Beef and broccoli was really overly salty that I could have finished a whole bowl of rice with one piece of meat. We told the staff that this was not edible because of how salty it was. They took it off our check. The waitress recommended the half Peking duck instead. It was okay and not the best Peking duck I've had. A bit overrated in my opinion. Our main issue was the price did not match the quality and flavor of the food we received. A bit of blandness throughout every dish we ordered and also moderate portions. Considering the prices, we were not satisfied by the end of our meal nor inspired to come back. On the other hand, the ambience is great, very soft and warm atmosphere. Lots of natural light, and in a great location. They have private rooms for parties and lots of seating and parking. I regret only taking three pictures. The ten of us ordered 10 entrees, two Shanghainese bun dishes, and two noodle appetizers. The total with tax and tip was $443 for 14 items. Roughly $330 for the items pre-tax and -tip. I think the price was reasonable. The bun dishes (小笼包) 8.5/10. I thought the buns were good. The juices were the right amount and the texture of the dough was good. No mistakes and nothing amazing about the buns. The noodle appetizers: 9.5/10. The two appetizers, which I'm totally blanking out on the names, were really good! I only took away 0.5 because they weren't spicy enough! The 10 entrees in general: 7.5/10. I surveyed everyone at the table, and most of the responses were to give them either 4 or 3 stars on Yelp. The people that gave the four stars complimented on the speediness of the service. They also praised the two rotating waiters who brought their A-games. The consensus best dish was definitely the cumin lamb and fried cauliflower (not pictured). My friends that gave the 3 stars mostly said the dishes weren't too memorable. A couple of them said they cannot even recall the names of the dish (5-10 minutes after eating them). A couple of them said the restaurant is a hit-or-miss on some days and our experience was more of a miss or bleh than a hit. So when choosing between 3 and 4 stars, I honestly wished this app would give the 3.5 option. Been a while since I've wrote reviews; back in the blogging mode . (From November 2021) One of my aunts recommended this spot. We did a tasting here before we did our family gathering here. I wasn't aware this was a Peter Chang-type restaurant. Of course that means there's gonna be stuff here that will prove why Chinese cuisine is unlike any other. Every dish we had here was straight up . Most memorable items for me was the bubble scallion pancake, stir fry chicken, bean curd roll, sweet/sour ribs, meatball stew, and steamed branzino. Lots of flavor and tastiness from these dishes especially the bean curd roll and stir fry chicken which gets my stamp of approval. The meatball stew (lions head) was a nostalgic dish as it reminded me of my grandfather's and mother's traditional Chinese cooking. Oh the memories! Food comes out pretty quickly and there's all types of dishes to satisfy your Chinese cravings. Cold dishes such as the tofu skin salad are unique and they also have dim sum as well. Not to mention this is done in Fairfax county so you know the asian authenticness will shine through with every bite! It's likely this will be our family Chinese spot whenever we're back in NOVA. The flavor was really good, my only complaint is the beef was tiny little pieces and very little. It was like eating a big bowl of noodles. For the price there should have been more beef. Awesome dim sum! Relatively quick service. While they may not have as wide of a variety as other more traditional dim sum spot (with the push cart ladies), I feel their food is far more superior. And this is comparing to Marks Duck, HK Pearl, (old) China Garden, and (old) Fortune. They are more expensive, but I think it's worth it.
