Salt and pepper chicken over rice
    Samuel C.

Perfected taiwanese home cooking. Not your typical restaurant. Usually only one person works there so days and hours open can be unpredictable. Self service for drinks. She just reopened so there is no set menu. When she runs out of food, she will stop taking orders. Its best to eat in when ordering fried food because it gets soggy when ordering to go. The braised beef is very tender and flavorful. The chicken is nice and crispy. She doesn't accept tips. Great place for home cooking.

    Three Cup Chicken

I really enjoyed my meal at Mama Lee. I ordered the 3 Cup Chicken. The chicken was juicy, tender dark meat with an extremely pleasant exterior texture. You could tell the meat had been extremely crispy and then the crispy layer became saturated in the intense, flavorful sauce. The sauce is seasoned heavily, it a way that I really loved. Adding a pinch more salt to this dish would make it too salty. It was clearly expertly prepared and seasoned right up to the edge. It's very salty and sweet as well as tangy and these three flavors are held in perfect harmony. I believe this dish generally doesn't contain vegetables, but I was glad to have the pieces of mushroom and broccoli to break up the richness of the dish. Also, as a solo diner, I couldn't order a separate vegetable dish as this would be way too much food. The restaurant is quite small and I don't recommend coming with more than two people. Mama Lee seems to be running this operation entirely on her own, which is very impressive and you should expect wait times in accordance with that. The food is delicious and the service is friendly. This is the type of restaurant that feels like being invited into someone's home for a meal.

Delicious Taiwanese food in Bayside! We haven't been here for several years, but found out they were open again so we got take out. They make all of the classic dishes and provide a lot of ingredients. We got the Beef Noodle Soup, Braised Pork over rice and the 3 Cup Chicken to share with 3 people. They included rice and radish soup complimentary with our meal. Couldn't even finish it all, so full! They have a few tables to dine in as well. Want to go back to eat the food fresh at the restaurant again. The prices went up a bit from before. Definitely recommended!

We ordered pickup this time. The eggplant is 10/10. So delicious and not overly salty. The yam came as a surprise but works very well with the rest of the ingredients. The three cup chicken...is too innovative for me. The tofu skin is delicious, but the chicken is fried and it's sour. We called to ask if that's normal and were told that there is vinegar and ketchup in the marinade. I think it's a really weird choice. I really love sour stuff but I don't think that is a good combination.

Love Mama Lee's so much we were waiting for her to come back to this location! She never disappoints and you can tell everything is made with love. She runs the place and cooking all on her own. She is very sweet and will not take tip lol. The place is small so don't expect to go with a huge party. The popcorn chicken and pork chop are fried well and the popcorn chicken is a bit sweet (not my fav but my family loves). I love the beef noodle soup it is a rich in flavor broth and the beef is so tender.

Mama lee has reopened in Bayside! Walking into Mama Lee feels less like stepping into a restaurant and more like walking into someone's home with a loving and generous mother. Mama lee truly radiates warmth and treats you like family, checks in to make sure you're good, and somehow makes the entire place feel cozy and personal. The food is just as comforting with generous portions, tender meats, perfectly cooked vegetables, and while it is salted a bit more heavily, everything is cooked to perfection. Everything tastes intentional, seasoned with heart as much as with salt. It is something I think about often after leaving, we will definitely be back! Highly recommended!! TLDR; feels like home, food is amazing, a bit on the heavier side but cooked perfectly

If you are expecting to be waited on and servers to keep your water glass filled, table cloths and fancy silverware, then you have gone to the wrong place. Mama Lee is all about home style cooking and serve yourself. Choose your cup and choice of tea or Poland spring water. A box of tissue and hand sanitizer at every table. We ordered pork chop, lions head, braised beef and cabbage with tofu rolls. We were comped with fish fillets, chicken soup and drinks. Everything was great and tasty. Something grandma would make if I still had one. The kids even loved the veggies. Ordered too much so took most of it home. Having it for dinner and still just as good! Thank you Mama Lee with your charm and generosity and just plain good cooking with lots of love that shows!

Mama Lee is back!!! Super yummy food with a healthy dose of cozy family friendly hospitality. Thank you.

So happy Mama Lee is open again in Bayside! We've missed her food and hospitality. Cozy simple dining area is clean and tidy. Thank you for this neighborhood gem.

    Lion's Head Meatball

Recently learned about Mama Lee from an Instagram foodie page, and it's worth taking a trip to this fantastic Taiwanese restaurant. The staff was extremely friendly, and the portions were beyond generous. I went with a friend and shared the Lion's Head Meatballs and the 3 Cups Chicken, and these two dishes were PLENTIFUL. The restaurant, although simple, with four tables and a self-serve tea/water station, excels in its taste and customer service. I will happily go there again and hope that anyone on the fence takes the plunge into a palette-pleasing experience.

I love Mama Lee because it's the most home-y environment that reminds me of the local Taiwanese shops I used to go to. The owner (Mama Lee) is so caring and treats her customers like she is inviting us into her home. Aside from that, the food is very authentic. I've tried many dishes and I recommend ordering more of the Chinese dishes that have a pleasant spice kick to it.

Okay this is a very belated review. I ordered pickup on a Sunday... maybe a month or two ago? It was a rainy Sunday evening that I ordered 1 pork chop over rice and 2 lu ruo fan for my family. Apparently I was the last customer of the night and they took my order even though they were closing soon. Mama Lee gave us some extra pork chops for my family to share. It was a very kind warming gesture and I greatly appreciated it! For those who don't know, Mama Lee is primarily a "mom and pop" shop where she does majority of the cooking and sometimes manages the front. It is a small family owned business. I highly recommend good quality Taiwanese food not to mention that Asian Mom hospitality of making sure everyone is well fed! Oh, and also the food is great and the portions are generous! This is my second time visiting (first time being a few years ago). Support locally owned businesses!

Is Mama Lee still open? I've been calling almost every day for the past few weeks but no luck

They were closed but should be open now. My husband called and yes they are closed but should be opened this weekend. They were out of the country until recently. Keep calling as she does answer the phone. Great food!

Is Mama Lee still open at all? Been trying since November, but maybe I've just been extremely unlucky. (1/4/19)

Just called tonight and Mama Lee answered. She just returned from vacation and will be reopening for service starting Monday, January 13.

Is Mama Lee open today - 4/28? I tried calling several times but no one picked up the phone. Thanks

No they aren't, just stopped by to check..

    Has this restaurant permanently closed?

No they are closed 2 days of the week and she said since she has no help if she is too tired she will not open the store. So she told people to call before coming.

I like their food because it's simple, tasty, and comes out quickly. The Khong Rou Fan is comforting and flavorful, and the Niu Rou Mian is always a good choice when you want something warm and satisfying. The string beans were a nice light appetizer to start. It's kind of a semi-service place -- you order at the counter and clean up after yourself when you're done, so there's no need to leave a tip if you dine in. The cashier who took our order is always nice, friendly, and polite, which makes the experience pleasant. The place is also always clean, which I appreciate. The good- plenty of meat in Lou Rou Fan, the texture of stinky tofu, the no tipping but bus your own tray business model. Friendliness of staff behind the ordering counter. The so-so: not enough fragrance in stinky tofu, the slightly soggy/oily pork chop, and lack of fragrance in Taiwanese sausage. The somewhat expensive price( our lunch costing $56 total). Will probably revisit another time to see how other dishes taste and see what price point it will result in.

Let's start with the noodle. It is al dente and carry the soup really well. The braised beef made well too. The tenderness is just fine. However, I missed the big piece of meat instead of bite size chopped cube. It is easy to eat but could be more satisfying. The Shanghainese Pok Choy is a must in order to complete this dish authentically. However, it's overly chopped. I missed the couple halved Shanghainese Pok Choy placed nicely on the side. For the soup, the fave is fine and the balance of the sour and savory is just to the point. However, I wish I could have more pickled veggie that added more sourness to the soup. It would be much better to place a container of pickled veggie on each table for the customer to add it freely. That would be perfect. This place is cozy, clean and neat. Thanks for the ambiance. Whenever I come across Taiwanese beef noodle soup, I usually have to try it. Overall, it was pretty good, the broth was tasty and the meat was tender. They offer both beef and beef tendon noodle soup, which I always appreciate since not every place does. However, when my mother requested just beef tendon due to dental issues, we were told it couldn't be accommodated because the meat is pre-portioned. That was a bit surprising for such a small establishment, as I would have assumed it was ladled from a larger pot like many similar places. I ended up ordering the same bowl and giving my mom all the tendon while I kept the meat although I'll admit I would have preferred to keep the tendon for myself. My cousin ordered the spicy beef noodle soup, which she really enjoyed. I tried a taste as well, but it wasn't really my preference. The spice had more of a Sichuan-style profile, leaning toward that mala flavor that I don't personally enjoy. Aside from that, the soup was enjoyable, though not the best I've had, but certainly nowhere near the worst either. We also ordered stinky tofu, which unfortunately didn't have quite enough soy sauce (I could have asked for more, but didn't bother) and ended up tasting a bit under-seasoned. It also wasn't as pungent as one would hope. Service was minimal, with one server who I believe may also have been the owner. While everything came out correctly, there wasn't much flexibility with requests, which made the experience feel a bit rigid. Prices were also on the higher side for a small, off-the-beaten-path spot. Overall, it was a decent meal with some good flavors, but a few inconsistencies kept it from being a standout.

The popcorn chicken was very tasty, but what confused me was that it wasn't hot when it arrived. It felt like it had been sitting out for a bit. My guess is they prepared the chicken first and held it while waiting for the soup so both dishes could come out together. Overall, the flavors were very good. The pricing is on the higher side, especially compared to Flushing. That said, if you're looking for a quick bite and don't want to make the trip out there, this place definitely gets the job done.

Upon arriving home, I realized they gave me the wrong order. We called them, and they has also realized the error and offered to remake the order. We headed back to pick up the correct order. They give a decent portion, and the spiciness is always on point. Be warned that the Hot is like pure spicy! What I ordered: -Blood Rice Cakes (Mild): good chewy texture. It's mild in flavor, so might be better with a Medium spicy. -Turnip Cakes (Medium): nice soft interior, and a crisp exterior. Good turnip flavor, that is not overpowered by the spicy. The chicken held up well. -Sweet Potato Fries with Honey Mustard: Good soft texture and sweet potato flavor. I am happy that they have this location, since it is much easier to stop by, and there is seating if I choose to eat in.

Sometimes the food is outstanding and sometimes it's good. I think it depends on the chef who is working that day. But it's always delicious and authentic Taiwanese food is pretty hard to find in NYC. Service can be slow. Usually, there are 1-2 servers working at a time. When we've gone, there is usually one server taking orders, bringing out food, handling calls, taking takeout orders, etc. So if you need something, I recommend calling the server and asking for everything you need. But I think the food far outweighs anything else at Tihu.

Not going back for sure ! I think they changed the owner or management . We have been coming here…read moreat least once a month , but last time we just had a bad experience . Food menu changed, it is Taiwanese? or spicy sichuan ? Or north eastern Chinese food ? Overall food is so oily and greasy ! Waiter recommended us huge pot of chicken even though we had over 14 dishes already , we have 8 people, 4 which are kids. And chicken pot with rice wine still Has strong alcohol smell! Kids can't eat , and we are so stuffed ! My understanding is the waiter wants a bigger bill. Anyway ! Never going back again ! Just be careful when you go there . Especially the short guy with glasses . He is gona make you over order ! This is not a neighbor business ! I'm looking forward for it to change to a different establishment and I know it's gona happen really quick
