We also ordered the pork + veggie wontons with spicy peanut sauce, and the chicken stir-fried udon. The soup dumplings are super fresh and packaged with flavor. The wontons are also solid if you want something a little richer. I've had better dumplings in the city, but still a very solid option. The passion fruit ice tea is fantastic and not too sweet. We were very impressed by how efficient the check in process was. The was a large line when we arrived, but it moved quickly and we were able to get seating within 20 minutes. The service wasn't too bad but it can be a long wait time if you come during peak lunchtime and dinner time hours. We wanted to compare the XLB to Din Tai Fung.. I haven't been to Nan Xiang in 13 years... They completely renovated the place... nicer. Just as when we were gonna pit our names on the waiting list, the host appeared and told us to go upstairs. We sat near the area where the dumplings were made. We ordered the Lucky 6 so we can sample different flavors but we still got an order of pork soup dumplings as well. Also ordered the shrimp wonton soup. I noticed they had passion fruit tea and omg you should definitely get it. It was so good. Grapefruit peach.. just okay in comparison.. Our wonton soup came first which is enough for 3 ppl if you just want a bowl to try. It had lil tiny shrimps in it ...not used to that but the flavor of the soup was light and the wontons were good. Skin was thin, not dense at all. Then our XLB came. I really liked the sampler. I tried the Scallop, chicken, pork and Luffa Gourd. L had the truffle and crab.. we were able to taste the flavors. They're light but very distinct. We don't eat too much sodium or processed food in our diets so we were able to distinguish each one. I actually liked the Scallop and chicken ones. The gourd one was really sweet but I could definitely taste the melon flavor. Chicken was savory and a touch better than the pork XLB...the scallop one was very unique. Light but very yummy. L said the crab one actually had more flavor than other restaurants in Chinatown. And we both prefer these to the ones at Din Tai Fung. Price isn't an issue but taste wise this has a ton of soup, more flavor. DTF tastes almost like a frozen XLB cuz it's so small and doesn't have any soup! Spent the day exploring Chinatown in flushing and tried this place based on a yelp search. It was on the upper floor of of a strip mall and when we walked in we were able to get seated right away. The restaurant was clean and the service was very good. The soup dumplings were very tasty although some of them broke as we took them out of the steamer. Very tasty nevertheless and the pan fried buns were delicious. We also had the fried Chinese chive box which was like an empanada filled with egg and loads of scallions. I could eat a bunch of these for breakfast in a regular basis. The Shanghai Siu Mai was not my favorite, but I'm glad I tried it. It was essentially a fried rice in a dumpling wrapper. Came for lunch on a Saturday after visiting Tangram mall which is only a block away. First time here but took about 15 minutes to get seated for a table of three. Tried the soup dumplings of course which were really good and their stir fried noodles with pork, also very good. I'd pass on the mixed berry tea next time as that was a bit too sweet fory liking, but overall a good experience. We got our food pretty quickly. Visited Nan Xiang on a busy Saturday early afternoon. Once you enter, you can scan the QR code to enter your name and phone number and they will assign you a number. Luckily, there was only a short wait for our party of two at around 12pm...but I suspect the wait can be much longer later in the afternoon or during peak dinner times. Once your number is called, you go up some stairs to the eating/tabled area. There are tables and chairs for 2, 4 and more guests throughout the large space. The pace of the restaurant is very fast...as soon as you are seated, you are given tea and your waiter comes over right away to take any order you are ready to give. Its helpful to ask for a menu while you are waiting for a table so you know what to order when asked. We had some soup dumplings as well as a (large) soup. Everything was very good and out in about 15 minutes...very fast. The soup dumplings were great...but as expected are filled with piping hot broth so be careful when eating. They have some other appetizers and dishes available. There are also some drink options including cold teas, soft drinks and beer. Overall a great experience...despite visiting on a busy Saturday, we were in and out in about 40-45 minutes. Street parking can be tough in the area but there are a few garages around...one of the more reasonable options is the garage at the Skyview shops which currently charge about $6 for up to three (3) hours and is a short 5 minute walk away. read more

Stopped by Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao in Flushing this past weekend and had a much better experience than the first time I came here about 7 years ago. We ordered a mix of their signature dishes: pork soup dumplings ($8.95), crab & pork soup dumplings ($9.95), and black truffle soup dumplings ($12.95). All of them came out piping hot with delicate skins and rich, flavorful broth inside. Nan xiang is obviously known for their Shanghainese soup dumplings, but when I heard that their Taiwanese braised beef noodle soup was legit, I just had to try. To my disappointment, the broth just wasn't as spiced and flavorful as I had hoped. The braised beef was certainly tender and the noodles were plentiful. I wished the noodles were a little more al dente and not soft/overcooked. Luckily each table had a mini jar of hot chili peppers for us to spice up this dish. The stars of the meal were obviously the soup dumplings, which had perfectly thin wrappers and flavorful filling / broth. I definitely prefer these over other soup dumplings restaurants, but Shanghai You Garden does have a great deal for a free round of soup dumplings that I always go for. read more

Xiao long bao are large and the dough is perfect thickness and texture! This is where I learned I had eaten soup dumplings the wrong way the entire time. You're supposed to bite into the twisted tip, and suck out the soup from the top so that it doesn't spill haha. This continues to be my favorite Shanghainese restaurant in Flushing. Went here with my daughter this weekend and ordered a lot of dishes. The table they gave us was just for 2 people and was so tiny that all the plates did not fit the table. Ordered the abalone soup dumplings and they cracked when I tried to pick them up so the soup ended up spilling everywhere. It was still very good though. I thought they had rice but they did not have any so I ended up getting the Shanghai stir fried udon and chicken fried udon noodles. It was a lot in each dish! The fried udon was very sweet, thick, and soft! Loved it so much! The place was very crowded and mostly families and large groups went there. The first floor had a koi tank that was very lovely. My daughter couldn't keep her eyes off the koi. There were different colors of koi that were so beautiful. The first floor also had a large tree with trunks of leaves making the first floor very beautiful to hang out while waiting for a table. Melon green tea was also a nice refreshing touch and good chewy jelly at the bottom without being too sweet. They didn't rush us out even with the line of people, so good service from that perspective, and refilled tea on a timely basis. Bathrooms crowded, though, and the restaurant seating is second level, so take the stairs or go around the outside of the mall to see if they have an elevator at the hotel or similar to get to the second floor entry if you are handicapped. I threw some of the dumpling sauce on top so we could at least eat it. Really a shame because the portion and preparation are both fine but there is just no flavor. The hot and sour soup is a 3/5. Good. Average. Nothing to write home about. Fits the bill if you want this. The pan fried pork dumplings are also a 3/5. I felt like the inside was WAY greasier than I bargained for and these dripped all over the place when I tried biting in. They are cooked well and the flavor is not bad. The one thing I couldn't get past is how sweet the dough is. I felt like I was eating a dessert. Maybe this is just how they are made here but the sweet sesame flavor in the dough was so overpowering I felt like I was eating a meatball in a dessert dough. Not bad and the flavors worked together well but the sweetness was too much for me. Overall I'm still going to give them a four because of how solid the soup dumplings are. My recommendation is to focus on what they do best and just get lots of their soup dumplings. The outer edges are crisp, but with each bite you get fresh steaming meat and a good amount of soup. When we went there is a long queue, but you put your number in the kiosk and the table turnaround is relatively quick. We waited maybe around half an hour and this was at 8pm. Inside is clean, spacious, and the ordering process is very easy and with fast service. Prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get too, so all in all I would definitely recommend this spot to try! read more
