Evidently this is an Anderson institution. It's been around a while and it's a local favorite. It's comfort food at its best at a moderate price with nice portions. The hubby had eaten here years ago and it was my first time. We got there at 10:30. The server asked if we were there for breakfast or lunch. We decided to wait for lunch. Good thing we came early because at 11 the place started getting packed. Every plate price includes homemade biscuits or cornbread and your choice of iced tea, coffee or soft drink. If you don't choose the daily lunch special you can choose MEAT & THREE (Choose one meat and three sides.) or 4 VEGGIE PLATE (Choose four sides.) Servers were awesome. The restaurant had a cafeteria feel. If you have a hankering for some good ole Southern food - this is the place.

Mama Penn's has been a beloved eating place in Anderson SC for decades. Bringing friends and families together after church for many years. I can remember hundreds of occasions meeting here for lunch after church when I was little. *However, now closed on Sundays. I wouldn't dream of saying anything too negative about this restaurant even if it were rightly warranted. I haven't eaten here since the late 1980's as a small child. They have moved buildings and expanded many many times over the years due to their increasing popularity within the community for good, wholesome home cooking. My mother was so excited to take me here for lunch today, partly I believe, because it's nostalgic for her and she also still frequents the restaurant often as she still lives in the area. We arrived around 4pm to a quiet, un-crowded atmosphere and was seated right away. I ordered the lean ham with mac and cheese, banana pudding and pinto beans. My mother ordered the fried chicken. A soft drink, tea or coffee is included with your meal as well as a basket of biscuits and/or corn bread. The meal was very very filling. They have homemade banana pudding on the menu. I LOVE homemade banana pudding - I LOVE IT! I used to eat tubs of it when I was young so I was very excited that HOMEMADE banana pudding was on the menu and it's even considered a side dish, so I order two sides of it. It would've probably been very good if it were chilled and thick and plated in a different manor. It was served plopped in a little plastic saucer- not very chilled or creamy- thin in texture and the scant vanilla wafers were hidden under the plopped scoop. The consistency and appearance wasn't very appealing however the great news is it could've been eaten with a straw if that was a requirement for you. All meals are served in drab plastic bowls and sectioned plates; very cafeteria like.... old fashioned cafeteria where everyone eats dinner at 4pm. That isn't necessarily bad, unless that's not your style. I did notice quite an array of diners ranging from young folk to middle aged to civil war veterans. The fresh brewed ice tea was good. They serve pepsi products which are gross- I'm a coke fanatic. The employees and wait staff are right out of a Steel Magnolias spin-off. Very polite and respectful. "Yes Ma'am- " Yes Sir" which I adore and appreciate as manners are a lost art in society today. All in all a good, solid meal served up with kindness and the sincerity of a grandmother's love. A wonderfully wholesome restaurant vibe with a nostalgic, small town ambience and prices to match. Two hearty, home cooked meals complete with drinks and plenty of leftovers was $23...That is unheard of today.

Rice and mashed potatoes with gravy, ham, and macaroni and cheese.

Overall the food is good but cashiers need training in customer service when they get the call in to go orders wrong.

When it comes to cuisines, as a generational born and raised southerner, I'm always going to be…read moreextra critical when it comes to good ol' southern cooking. It's the anniversary of my mom's passing and Easter weekend so a particularly tough time and I was feeling for some home cooked cozy cookin but not up for doing it myself. As we are out of state and can't be home with family this weekend, we went searching on UberEats to hit that spot, knowing I was going to end up with something like Cracker Barrel or iHop, neither of which sounded good but, let's be real, I'm emotionally eating right now. However, a newly listed Sunday's popped up in the delivery options. The menu was a bit limited but scored points for authenticity . My hubby got the ribs, collards, and mac-n-cheese. I got the fried pork chop, rice & gravy, green beans & fried okra. Both came with a roll and we (of course) ordered sweet tea, something we rarely do anymore, only for special occasions. So here's where I get extra critical of my southern food. This is home cookin' and just what the doctor ordered. I didn't want fancy, I didn't want frilly, I needed true comfort food and that's what I found here. Could I suggest some tweaks? Sure, the rice and gravy didn't have much flavor, could use a little s&p in the gravy. The pork chops were a tad salty as well as the green beans but both had great flavor! The fried okra is, well fried okra, but at least it's not breaded in corn meal. Too many restaurants try to perfect perfection and over correct. Hubby's ribs were good, collards were good but we didn't have pepper sauce to add that pop of vinegar since we ordered delivery. His Mac n cheese (and this is gonna hurt, was a bit dry) but lately I haven't been feeling for Mac n cheese and haven't been a huge fan of the baked Mac n cheese trend lately anyway. I always feel it's dry so this is not a knock to the restaurant. Was every item perfection? No. Would I order again? In a heartbeat! This is home cooking. It's not pretentious. It's no doubt made with love and it reminded me of sitting down at my grandma's dinner table for supper. I needed a real comfort meal and that's what I got, warmed my heart. Oh and the sweet tea! My hubby and I have been opting for healthier menu items for several years now and I've even lost my taste for southern sweet tea as it's now too sweet even for me, again, born and raised on southern sweet tea. We ordered an unsweet tea to dilute it knowing I wanted the comfort of sweet tea but I probably couldn't handle so much sugar. Well, no need. It's rare to find a restaurant that gets it sweet enough without making the tea thick like syrup, true southerners know what I'm talking about. Sunday's sweet tea hits that perfect line where it's sweet enough but not thick and the tea flavor still comes through. No need to dilute with unsweet tea, it's perfect! I knocked a star, mostly due to the imbalance of heavily salted pork chops and green beans with the lack of flavor on the rice and gravy. I think a little balance there, share the spices lol would really make my meal top notch, but again, if my grandma or momma had cooked this meal I'd have no complaints. The only reason I'm even pointing this out is to offer a fair review on Yelp, otherwise I wouldn't say a word and eat with a smile on my face and an overstuffed belly.

Seeing lots of people sitting out under the pavilion (even in 90 degree weather) helped me realize the food must be good! The front porch was accommodating to the ones who were waiting to be seated. The hostess on the front porch asked how many were in our party, and then took us inside to seat us. Entering inside reminded me of my great grandparents home, quaintness and community all wrapped into one room filled with tables filled by family and friends enjoying a meal together. The menu was not overwhelming and it did not take long to get a visual of the items as they passed by to other surrounding tables. The servers were friendly and offered all kinds of good advice for the guests. The food was amazing-good wholesome stuff. You would think your grandma was in the kitchen cooking because it is fresh and includes good deep flavors. The stuffed french toast was 2 slices of butter enriched Texas toast with a large serving of strawberries and cream cheese filling squished in the middle. The palmetto burger had just as pimento cheese as it did burger. With layers of crisp lettuce and a slice of tomato, get your mouth ready! The Orleans po-boy was huge- lots of shrimp goodness on a sub roll...another large serving....so come hungry. To finish it off we shared the pecan pie paired with their buttermilk lemon ice cream (yes you read that right).....delicious!!!!! We will be back and remember the cash next time . Another trip today and another great meal, today we did breakfast and boy was it amazing-Will's smothered sausage and potatoes was a deep bowl of goodness, the monte cristo was delicious but after eating a ham ball and a Apple fritter allowed me to only eat half of the sandwich so I have leftovers for later.
