"And I've got swinging doors, a jukebox and a bar stool And…read moremy new home has a flashing neon sign Stop by and see me any time you want to 'Cause I'm always here at home till closing time" (Merle Haggard) Shu Express just announced it was permanently closed. Shu had an interesting market niche. It concentrated its menu on authentic Szechuan fare that might not have been mainstream enough to support its rent in the Walmart Plaza and in the Farmington Valley's demographics. The space will reopen as a Wokcraft, the latest version of An Asian restaurant at this location.

Did you ever cook rice and forget to salt it before you cooked it?…read more I went to Shu Express today, as I was craving some Sichuan cuisine, that had a little kick to it. So as I pulled into the Walmart-Big Y Plaza in Avon. I parked almost right in front of the little restaurant just to the left of Five Guys and the haircut place. After hearing how delicious lunch specials were, I decided to get one, and the owner/order taker informed me that because this is a holiday no lunch specials. I was ready to walk out. Then, after looking at the prices, I was double ready to walk out. But because of the trooper that I am, I ordered the Yangzhou fried rice. The order arrived, and it just didn't look right; but that's OK; I'm a trooper. The fried rice was missing corn and scallions, a staple to this Szechuan dish. As I dug in, it hit me immediately. There was no flavor. The rice had zip for flavor. The shrimp were not seasoned. The diced pork looked old, the beans sprouts looked OK, the peas looked fresh, and the mushrooms were warm, , but not cooked. This dish lacked flavor. It was almost like it tasted like water. I brought the dish back and asked if there was some type of sauce that could put on this dish, and the owner got pissed at me. Copped a real attitude. He gave me three little soy sauce packets and sent me on my way. How this restaurant earned 4 1/2 to 5 stars is beyond me. Yes, parking was great, yes, the place was spotless, but the food tasted like a dieters choice that you would order a Chinese restaurant like steamed broccoli with white rice. Flavorless and disappointing. Plus it wasn't cheap at $16 with a soda. Will I be back to this location to retry it? Nope With so many new locations popping up in Avon on Route 44, I'll spend my money elsewhere, trying new things. I'm just really disappointed in this place and the owner. Perhaps he should take a refresher course on customer service, and allow lunch specials on holidays. This place was not busy at all and I was there at lunchtime. I just don't see this place lasting.

Unfortunately Meadow is on a downward slope. Nothing wrong with it but nothing great either. The…read moresushi is OK but you won't be surprised by anything spectacular. Presentation is kind of plain, no art to it. The kitchen food is fine, better than store front takeout but still it is just OK. This used to be my goto Asian restaurant and I had many awesome meals here. Kind of coasting these days. Still a good meal but I think the fact they still do mot of there business as take out as taken away from the art of presentation and going the little bit of extra step to make a good dining experience.

Well, I finally made it there & he was right. We taste tested the Christmas Roll, the Lobster Maki, the Mango Tuna Maki & Spring Rolls. (Summer Rolls are not fried, made w/ rice paper & have meat. The Spring Rolls are eggroll wraps that are deep fried & filled with vegetables & mushrooms.) I did not try them, but I was told they were worth it, so maybe I will go back & taste test the two & give you more detail... and yes, I will be going back. All of the rolls were delicious, but my favorite was the Lobster Roll followed by the Christmas Roll. The Mango Roll was good, but I felt like it was missing something. The texture was good & it was sweet, but it wasn't until the last bite that I figured out what was off. The last piece had a larger piece of eel in it, where the rest was primarily Avocado which dulled it out. It was attractive, but the ingredients were not distributed evenly. If it had been, I bet it would have been much better. Who knew.. I'll give you all an update when I return, but in the meantime, give it a try. I don't think you will be disappointed.
