Nope. Won't be back. I love Thai food and have wanted to try this place for a long time but since we usually have someone with us that wants more traditional American food when we visit the area so we hadn't made it there yet. We came to the area our own this time so thought we'd finally give it a try. I was undecided between the Pad Thai which I almost always get the first visit somewhere and the drunken noodles. It's kind of my gauge to how good the place is because I figure if the can't get this dish right I can't expect the more complex ones to be. We ordered the Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles and the summer rolls. I'll start with the summer rolls. We typically see them with shrimp and the menu didn't say anything otherwise. There was both shrimp and chicken in them, and they were quite large and loosely wrapped. 2 for $8 was steep though considering the chicken was tough and the shrimp was strong tasting. I couldn't make myself eat them. My husband managed to eat most of one. They came with what was obviously a jarred sweet and sour sauce -another disappointment as peanut sauce is so much better and what I was kind of expecting as that is usually the norm. The drunken noodles had a nice initial flavor but the heat was more than expected for medium. My husband and I always get medium for Thai dishes and typically they are just right or a little light in heat for us. This one they had been a bit generous with the heat so much so that it was almost hard to eat. It said there were a variety of veggies but it really only had green and red peppers. There was a decent amount of chicken in the dish. There may have been some green onion but only a couple of pieces, it felt like it was enough so they could say it was included even though you had to hunt to find them. Last to the Pad Thai, my typical initial gauge for a new to us Thai place. There was a generous amount of noodles, but were on the verge of undercooked. It couldn't figure out the flavor, but they were quite sour compared to any I've had before and I'll have to say it didn't do it for me. I would say they were almost eating wha I would call sweet and sour noodles if I was to give them a name. There was no richness or depth to the flavor at all. Again the items in the noodles were sparse at best. Very little chicken in this one, a crumble of egg, and I think I saw like 4 bean sprouts.. not acceptable for $15. They did have the required peanuts on the top though. Oh, and a slice of lemon, something else I'd not seen served before with Thai food. I had high hopes at this being a great place to visit when we are in the area since we love Grand Haven and I love Thai food but this ain't it. Bummer. So sad. read more

I'm guessing that most of the reviewers have never had Thai food anywhere other than here. This place was awful. Worst Pad Thai and Green Curry we have ever had. The crab rangoons and Tom Kha soup were edible, and that is the best I can say about either. Avoid the Thai tea, it's a sugary mess. We ordered ordered breaded chicken (like what you get in sweet & sour chicken) for our 8 year old--they brought out a plate of it with 9 pieces and charged $12.99 for it. $68 for crap food. Momma ties has awesome food. My only complaint is they do not know how to cook the vegetables. For some reason they're always raw hardly cooked. They would be a five star all day long, but I can only give a three star because of the raw vegetables. Sweet and sour shrimp was okay, the sauce served on the side looked like it came out of a can. The Tom yum soup was watery and lacked the authentic Tom yum taste. The first time we ate here -- 2-3 years ago -- we really didn't care for it, but for whatever reason we eventually decided to try it again and decided we must have just ordered wrong the first time because the food has been great ever since! We've been back several times and haven't been disappointed again. Some of the best egg drop soup I've ever had and a bowl of it is MASSIVE. The place doesn't have much of an interior (inside a strip mall off the highway) and for whatever reason the water always tastes odd (makes for fine tea though, which I recommend) -- but otherwise great! I didn't even know this place was here until a friend said "hey, let's do thai" and told me about Mama's Thai Cafe. Tucked away in the corner of a strip mall behind some other buildings, this place is one of those that you have to know it's there.. or follow your map app to get there. Arrived about 7pm on a Wednesday night. Decent sized place and there was one other table of people when we got there. When we left, they were just as empty, although I did see some people come in and grab some to go orders. I ordered hot tea and was asked if I wanted jasmine or green. I chose green, and it came out with a tea pot and a couple of small cups. We both ordered our meals - I did the tofu pad thai, which came with a side of soup, either egg drop or hot and sour. My hot and sour soup came out moments later and although good, it tasted like it had been sitting for awhile. It didn't have a burnt taste to it, but it almost did. Still, it was good and I ate it. As I finished the soup, my meal came out. A tad smaller portion that I was expecting, but I still wasn't able to finish it all, so my eyes were bigger than my stomach when it came out, but it all worked out in the end. They didn't ask (and I didn't remember) to tell them that I wanted medium spice, so it came out without any spice to it. There were two people working in the front of the house and for a period of time, we were the only ones eating in, so service was super fast. Tonight was our second visit to Mama's Thai. The first time we went Mary Jane took excellent care of us. She was very personable and gave great recommendations. We each had a cup of soup - I had the hot & sour and he had the egg drop. Both were delicious! We had the crab rangoons and shared the chicken drunken noodles and really enjoyed all of it! We liked Mama Thai's so much we went back within a couple weeks! Tonight we were taken care of by Miller and he was also wonderful! He talked to us about the things we were ordering. For instance when Jeff ordered Thai iced tea and Miller asked if he'd had it before - he had not and Miller informed us that it's really sweet. Glad he did! Not at all what Jeff wanted. He also explained some of the noodle dishes a little more, helping make a decision. Tonight we had the potstickers, which we yummy! They were pan fried and had a thinner dough than we're used to and they crisped up nicely. We also both had the Mama's Pho. I wanted chicken pho, unfortunately that wasn't an option. It was good, but beef isn't really my thing. I ate some of the sliced beef but did not care for the meatballs. Jeff liked it all though. The broth and noodles were exactly what I was looking for and wanted. On a side note and not really related, Mary Jane was working tonight as well and did an such a great job dealing with an angry customer. From what we overheard, the dissatisfaction didn't seem entirely related to her entree. Mary Jane was polite, professional and handled the exchange much better than the upset woman did. read more

Very good Thai and Asian food. Service is always efficient and friendly. Don't underestimate the level of spiciness and unless you really want a dish extremely hot don't ask for more heat than the standard level. Great place for lunch on a schedule because orders get taken and served quickly. If you like Thai food do yourself a favor and try one of the noodle or Curry dish I increased this to 5 stars because they have proven their consistent, high level of food quality and service over a long period. read more

This is probably the worst Thai food I've ever had. First, the egg drop soup had no egg texture or taste whatsoever. It was basically just chicken soup with a tiny glob or two of cooked egg whites found within. It should be called "chicken drop soup." Next, I had Thom Ka soup, which would have been decent, but it was way too thin and watery compared to probably any other Thai restaurant I've been to. Next, the chicken pieces in the entrees seemed rubbery, like they had been nuked in the microwave oven one too many times. West Michigan is pretty much a desert for oriental food and Moma's Thai is an oasis. We eat here multiple times on our summer holiday away from the Texas summers. The pad Thai is sweet but delicious and the spicy dishes are lively but won't have you reaching for a loaf of bread. Highly recommend. read more

I can't believe this place is, in all reality, located inside a beach town strip mall. It deserves it's own building and reputation. I admit I was recommending Mama's to others asking about good Thai on the Lakeshore, but had never visited myself. WOW! I admit that I am easy on waitstaff, but Jonathan was amazingly attentive. He had the knowledge of the food like this was a five-star restaurant. I think I scared him when my response to the food taste was, "Look at my face!" I like mine native spicy and I got what I requested. I've had Thai in seven states, including two gastro hotspots (Denver and San Diego). This is the best I've had anywhere. I think people go looking for Pad Thai and think Noodles & Co. You can go full authentic or middle of the road. This Paid Thai ... is PAD THAI. I hate coconut, but I love Malay and Thai. We had dinner here about two weeks ago. The food was okay, but the service was terrible. It is possible we had a trainee. In terms of the food, the kids, really liked the Pad Se'ew ($10). The Sesame Chicken ($10) had lots of crispy breading - the flavor was okay - we ordered mild. The Peanut Butter chicken ($10) was good for the first piece or so, but then was too sweet. The worst calcination of experiences! First, I order my dish and it comes out dry as a bone. Second, the waitress wanted to charge me $3 for a small cup of extra sauce. I decline and she goes and vents to her BOH staff. Told them I was dumb for not knowing that the rice would absorb the sauce. I have been eating here since they opened, a couple times a month at least (I may have an addiction..). Food and service have always been top notch. Never a bad meal whether dining in or taking out. Highly recommend the lettuce wraps (pot stickers too), general chicken, pad mee krob, and gang keaw waan. If you eat in and get soup, the hot and sour is my personal favorite. My one warning: BEWARE THE THAI SPICY LEVEL!! It's painful, you will sweat, possibly die, and only the Thai iced tea can even remotely relieve the burn. read more

We found this little hole in the strip mall on Yelp, and were pleasantly surprised. Spartan atmosphere, but comfortable. Walked in and the girl behind the counter called out "Please sit anywhere!" (Polite informality, which I like.) The waiter arrived quickly and got our beverages. The food was plentiful and reasonably priced. In the area for a sporting event, we were starving and honestly I was craving a big bowl of pho. Yelped the area and found that this Thai restaurant serves pho, so we went. It was after lunch hours so the place was empty. My kid wanted crab rangoon and the waitress said he can do 1/2 order if it was too much, so that was great recommendation. Ordered the pho with extra noodles (small upcharge). The broth was surprisingly good and flavorful, noodles were a little soft but no big deal. The meat slices were a little thick for pho, but they tasted good and the meatballs were really good. I was missing the other meat toppings for usual combination pho, but I get that it's not a pho restaurant. All in all, we came out stuffed and didn't have to drive out of our way for pho. My kid said he really liked the pho and the rangoons. So that's win right there. Next time I will try the Thai dish(es). read more
