Sze Chuan String Beans
Jane L.

Worked up an appetite from swim lessons this afternoon and had a hunkering for those addicting Szechuan String Beans. I scooped up my girlfriend and popped in for lunch. We were seated at a booth. Didn't even need to glance at the menu. I just hit repeat on my solid favorites: Crab Rangoon, Mushu Pork and Szechuan String Beans. Our attentive and friendly server Justin, made sure to bring our waters and sauces before food arrived. Major bonuses points for that. He was also kind enough to bring out chopsticks. Crab Rangoons were served within 5 minutes and seemed on the larger side today. Not complaining just observant. Love the dipping sauce that accompanied it. Szechuan String Beans were on point per usual. I can honestly just eat the whole plate of those solo if they weren't so greasy. Mushu Pork was good, I didn't really care for the pancakes to wrap today so I just gobbled it up with steam rice. Surprisingly, we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. Which was nice. My girlfriend pointed out how spacious it is and is considering hosting her mother in-laws birthday here in the future.

Our family has made Christmas Eve dinner at Mandarin House a tradition for 20 years, but this is the last. The staff seemed completely overwhelmed -- from the very unhelpful hostess to the frazzled servers to the weak mai tais to the super bland food. Don't know yet where we'll end up next year for Christmas Eve, but we'll be starting a new tradition somewhere else.

Sad Salt & Pepper Chicken this time

Note to self: love the hot & sour soup, pass on the Singapore style curry noodles, and bummed this time the salt & pepper chicken was mostly just crumbs and hard to chew. Last time, the chicken was tender and delicious.

Everything was delicious! The orange chicken was great! The service was fast and friendly. The place was crowded. It's expected when you have great Chinese food! Some of my pictures didn't come out the best but here are a few.

Bathroom sink made from a stainless steel wok

A blast from the past. Love the decor. Service was great, food was very good. There was a charming detail that I will share in photos. They took a stainless steel wok and made it into a sink in the restroom. The faucet is a pot filler. I love the whimsy. Somebody was thinking!

When in doubt, get drunk off the lava bowls and order as many full ducks as possible. Nice little throw back Chinese place in birdrock.

Ask the Community - Mandarin House

Do they properly prepare their Peking Duck?

Do they use MSG?

Yes. You can ask for no MSG when ordering.

Does this place offer garlic fried rice?

I don't believe so, to the best of my knowledge they only offer fried rice with no specific options. Although given who they are, they might take your specific request? 🤔🤨

If they are open again, is their phone the same? I've been trying to make a reservation but the phone just rings - many different times of the days, times of week. What's up?…

I've been wondering that too. Their web page said something about Nov 1 but I don't get any answer on the phone either. I live near by so I'll go and take a look tomorrow.… Read more

The paper menu is too overwhelming with no photos. They serve Shanghainese cuisine. It's great that they offer fresh made dumplings, original dishes and their specialty dishes. We ordered one from each section. Got fried rice, chow mein, ribs, egg plant, Shanghai grilled pork buns, XLB, and pork dumplings. Side of rice is $1. The egg plant would be my favorite dish. They offer three options, we got the one with mushrooms. First time no wait time. The second time we added our name to the tablet. They told us parties of 6 automatically taps on 18% but when I got the tab, that wasn't the case. Parking is hard to come by in this plaza. First two hours free. There's a paid lot across the street for $4 an hour. Or free street parking.

Chow Mein 100/10: We usually order 2 servings because it's THAT good. The portion sizes are huge, and it's always the dish we recommend to anyone we bring here. Garlic String Beans 10/10: Sometimes it can be lacking flavor, but this time it was perfectly garlicky and savory. Definitely a must-order. Pork Chops 10/10: Super flavorful and pairs so well with either rice or noodles. The staff is always kind, service is quick, and overall this place is definitely on my list for good Chinese food!

Located in the same Convoy plaza as Yun Tea House, the parking here is absolutely horrible, and we…read morehad to wait about 10 minutes to be seated--but the food easily earns 5 stars! They have a super easy online ordering system right at the table which makes things convenient. We ordered the spicy lamb biang biang noodles and the non-spicy beef pulled noodles, and both had the perfect chew and incredible flavor. We also ordered the garlic green beans, but they came out so late that we were already completely full from the noodles, so we took them to go. Thank god we did, because they turned out to be pretty salty on their own and really needed to be paired with white rice at home. Overall, an amazing spot for authentic noodles! Absolutely love this place and will be back.

We came right before the dinner rush and I can definitely see why this place got packed so quickly…read more It isn't huge inside but there is ample seating, we were sat right away and the menu was fully online. Something I didn't love though, you order and pay through the online menu. Considering you leave a tip I don't fully understand how it works when we did this whole process ourselves. I also noticed other tables getting plates and bowls which we had to ask for. Overall, I felt the servers weren't too friendly either and seemed to rush through our table despite them standing around not seeming too busy. The food was excellent though! The soup had a great spice to it and super flavorful. The beef and onion was so juicy and addictive, the green beans were good too and had a slight kick to them.
