Miso was cold, sashimi was good aside from the tuna, cucumber salad and edamame was fine, California roll was not how we like it as it was mixed with a lot of mayo. Service was great. They had the game on tv. They had Diet Coke & grenadine so they get a point for that.

This spot holds a special place in our hearts as it was our first date night!! During college we went here often and always had the best time. This was the first place I ever had sushi - the OB roll so good!! We've visited twice with our kids and I was surprised to find that it's a very family friendly location, the server was great with our kids. There was something for everyone and the sushi seemed very fresh. Everything came out quickly and the veggie sushi rolls were phenomenal. My husband had one of the chicken dinner entrees and loved it. It came with so many sides - miso soup, California roll etc. We all shared the sumi salad and Edemame which were both great. We'll be back for sure!

Found sea shells? Or glass in my salmon avocado roll. Cut the roof of my mouth and now I am bleeding. Front desk lady was so nice and accommodating but other than that the fish was very fishy and not good at all.

This place was a present supprise. The vegiterian sushi felt fresh and crisp with good flavor combos and the staff was super friendly and quick. A long time ago I had a Mexican sushi fusion place that left a bad taste in my mouth so I was hesitant to get something similar at this place but on recomendation I did and it was great. The Pico de gio, crisp veggies worked well without feeling out of place. It was a big roll so it was pretty much impossible to do it in one bite but that is not that big an issue. The parking was surprisingly not too bad and free juat a block away. Overall a good spot to grab a bite. There weren't a tone of veggie options but the ones we got were good.

Decided to check this sushi spot based on the reviews and it was a good experience! Definitely AYCE menu and at a great price! Close to the pier and other establishments. Easy parking and friendly staff!

Chose DoorDash for this specific order but honestly, I was surprised how much we liked it here. I was a bit skeptical from other reviews, but for the price it was great. I'll be back to try in person.

Good spot for quick sushi and good dinner. It's pretty decent too! Staff was very helpful and sat us quickly. The food also comes out fast so we were able to eat at a good pace. I love the varied of sushi you can pick from. Decently priced too.

After driving by this spot for years, I finally gave it a go after a night out and was not disappointed! The veggie tempura (especially the asparagus) was sooooo good. We loved all of our rolls especially the toro. I would probably pass on the miso soup next time as it wasn't as flavorful as I'd expect and it got cold quick. Would definitely recommend this spot especially for the late nighters.

I'll get right to it and the first thing that I absolutely hate is there was Zero prices on the menu. I included photos of two different menus which we'll see there was no prices. Apparently they were supposed to give us a piece of paper to make our Sushi selections on and that included the prices but we never got one of those and we did not even know about that piece of paper until after eating at the restaurant. My friend was not happy that she ordered two rules that were $19 each. And mine were about $14 each. She definitely would have ordered what I ordered if she had seen the prices. The service was also lacking. The hostess was great and she seemed very stressed I heard her say to one of the sushi chefs that two people called out. But then the other server and the hostess who was also serving occasionally we're both just running around and it seemed chaotic which was very disrupting to the guests. I used to come here all the time and now I rarely come here and I can see why. It is street parking only and there are meters out front. So if you don't want to pay for parking go to a side street.

GOOD SUSHI IN LA JOLLA (4.3 stars)…read more - FOOD: pretty good; very fresh fish - PRICE: fair - SERVICE: excellent - AMBIANCE: quaint sushi restaurant (which I like; nice and quiet and chill) I knew something about the execution was familiar. I didn't know it until after eating there and reading a review that this is the sister location of So Cal Sushi (in Normal Heights) and after comparing the menus it made sense! What stood out to me when I knew nothing about this restaurant was that spicy tuna is in majority of their speciality rolls and after tasting it I had thought 'this seems familiar' - sometimes spicy tuna (in anything) can be overdone, played out, or not really cared for. Same thought when I first ate at the sister restaurant in Normal Heights when they first opened years ago - too much of it. But overall execution of the meal was good. :: ORDER :: MISO SOUP ($3.95) - served with wakame, negi, and tofu. average/typical. KURODAI ($9.25) - they have rotation fish list and saw an offering of Kurodai and had to try it. First of all, my favorite is Nodoguro but they didn't have that and was told closest to that was Kurodai. Honestly, I thought differently - didn't really come close to Nodoguro but Kurodai is also a nice cut of fish. The texture was somewhat firm and the taste was light and clean in flavor with a little subtle ending taste of faint sweetness. The fish was extremely fresh and you can taste it immediately. HIGHLY RECOMMEND CITRUS BLISS ROLL ($21.95) - spicy tuna, krab, and cucumber. Topped with salmon, avocado, spicy mayo, crunchies, and unagi sauce. I loved how they make the rolls - not too much rice nor dense packing, very tender and soft roll, easy to consume and eat more without feeling full, and the perfect amount of cut rolls per serving. You can taste the spicy, little bit of creamy, and a good amount of citrus... and if you dunk the roll in soy sauce you get the salty. It is a good roll if you like spicy and citrus - for me I like citrus more than spicy. The roll was good I ate everything, BUT I do feel there could be some improvements. I know people love spicy but when it comes to raw fish - that needs to shine in the sushi. yes tuna is basic but overkilling the flavor to make it spicy isn't for everyone (as it's in nearly every speciality roll). I would recommend lowering the spicy in the tuna because it already has spicy mayo included + it allows the customer to control their spicy level. The sriracha takes over the taste and when eating sushi the spicy for me should come from the wasabi (not soaking good quality fish in a sriracha bath). I wish they also offered their rolls with regular tuna instead of spicy tuna. I will def be back! Overall great place. Until the next bite...

This location has been a variety of restaurants over the years that don't seem to last. Cherryfish is pretty inside. Happy hour is offered at the bar or a sort of strange long skinny table in the middle. We sat at the bar which is way too high for the bar chairs. You literally feel like a child trying to sit at the grown up table. So odd. We were brought menus but then pretty much forgotten as the staff chatted and waited for the dinner rush. Eventually someone came over to take our order and we ordered the HH wine and a couple of appetizers. The food was brought out by the food runner without any plates, silverware or napkins. I had to bug the bartender/bar back for those. Then when the sushi roll came out I had to again bother them for chopsticks, soy sauce, dishes. He gave us one soy sauce dish to share, I guess. The food was ok, the roll was mostly vegetables with small pieces of fish on top. For a restaurant of this price point, I wouldn't return to try the full menu. The service just wasn't there, I don't want to feel like a bother to get basic things. Sad, because I wanted to like this place.

We've practically built date nights around Himitsu ever since. While reservations are a must, they're absolutely worth planning ahead for. One of the things we love most is that every visit becomes a chance to try something new. We're adventurous eaters, so nothing on the menu is off-limits, and we've never left disappointed. On one memorable visit, we ordered the Daily Bento Box, the Tasha Roll, and the Himitsu Sumaki Roll. While the Sumaki Roll leaned more subtle in flavor, the quality of the fish spoke for itself. The Bento Box was a collection of beautifully prepared bites, fresh salads, and perfectly cooked fish that showcased the kitchen's attention to detail. Oddly enough, one of the biggest standouts that day was the rice. It had a wonderful texture, a natural off-white color, and tasted remarkably fresh--as though it came from a small producer who truly cares about quality. Whether that's true or not, I can't say, but it's those little details that make Himitsu feel special. The food is consistently exceptional, but the service deserves just as much praise. The staff is warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about what they do. You can feel that this isn't just a job--it's a craft they take pride in sharing with every guest. Most recently, I brought my sisters here while they were visiting me in San Diego for a much-needed sister date. We ordered the Karaage Rice Bowl, the Himitsu Bowl, and the chef's recommended sushi (three pieces each). We were so excited to dig in that we forgot to take a picture until after we'd already eaten one piece--that probably tells you everything you need to know. The sushi was, without exaggeration, phenomenal. To quote one of my sisters: "Seriously... the best sushi I have ever had... ever." High praise from someone who's eaten plenty of sushi, and honestly, I couldn't disagree. After years of visits, Himitsu continues to deliver the same outstanding quality, creativity, and hospitality. Restaurants this consistently excellent are incredibly rare. Himitsu is an absolute gem, and every visit reminds us why we keep coming back. We already can't wait for our next culinary adventure.

The drinks arrived after the appetizer. She said the bartender was pretty slammed, but when we looked over, they seemed to be just talking to each other. Anyway the food arrived. We had to call her back because we had no utensils. That took another ten minutes. We had muscles, but nothing to put the shells in, so I just piled them on the table which then of course started this pool of sauce around them, and the table got quite messy. All in all, having the music so loud quite frankly I think I might have hearing loss, and the service being so terrible I couldn't wait to get out of there. Our bill was $200. This is one of the OG sushi spots in San Diego, and I've been coming here on and off for decades…read more It had been quite a few years since my last visit, though. With so many new sushi restaurants opening around town, it's a little out of the way for us, and honestly, I had almost forgotten about it. I'm so glad we decided to come back because it's every bit as good as I remembered. I made a reservation for the sushi bar, which is always my favorite place to sit at a traditional sushi restaurant. Instead of ordering my usual rolls, I decided to splurge on the Chef's Choice nigiri. I also asked the chef to serve each piece one at a time rather than bringing everything out at once. I love taking my time, enjoying each bite, and watching the chefs work, which is another reason I prefer sitting at the counter. The Chef's Choice was absolutely worth it. Every piece was incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared. My favorite was the aged toro, which had been aged for three months. It had such a rich, buttery flavor and completely melted in my mouth. My husband ordered a few specialty rolls, and he was very happy with both the quality and the generous portions. I also upgraded my regular miso soup to the clam miso soup, and I'm so glad I did. The broth was delicate and flavorful without being overly salty, and the clams added a wonderful sweetness. Even though I was already pretty full, I couldn't resist ordering three pieces of tempura after seeing them come out for another customer. I rarely order tempura in the U.S. because it's often heavily battered, when authentic Japanese tempura should be light, crisp, and delicate. If you've ever been to a dedicated tempura restaurant in Japan, you know exactly what I mean. This tempura was surprisingly close to what you'd find in Japan--light, airy, and perfectly crispy without feeling greasy. For dessert, we shared the green tea Basque cheesecake. It leaned a little on the dry side, but I still really enjoyed it because the matcha flavor was rich, bold, and not overly sweet. We also had a chance to chat with Akira-san behind the sushi bar, which made the evening even more enjoyable. The hospitality and attention to detail really reminded me why I've always loved this place. With so many trendy and expensive sushi restaurants in San Diego these days, this restaurant continues to stand the test of time. The quality of the fish is outstanding, the atmosphere is authentic, and I honestly think the prices are very reasonable for what you get. It's a classic for a reason, and I'll definitely be making the drive back more often.

Some highlights: * The A5 Wagyu Tataki was delicious and one of my favorite dishes of the night. * The Uni Pasta was good, honestly some of the best uni pasta I've ever had. Rich and flavorful, but not heavy. * The Bluefin Tuna Belly, Hamachi, Hamachi Belly, Unigyu, Salmon, and Salmon Belly sushi were all fresh. * The Hon-Maguro Toro Tataki literally melted in my mouth. The toro itself was delicious, although I thought the ponzu sauce was a bit overpowering and would have preferred less of it so the fish could shine. The only item that didn't quite work for me was the Sweet Shrimp Sushi. The shrimp itself was good, but the lemon/cream topping overpowered the natural sweetness and felt unnecessary. I also wish the sushi pieces were a little bigger for the price haha. Parking can be a bit challenging since the lot is small and the spaces are tight, but there is street parking nearby. I'd come back and would recommend it to anyone looking for sushi in La Jolla. Yum!
