    Lemon chicken
    Margaret A.

Located in the Vons shopping center. This is a must visit stop after you've finished your errands for the day. Or if your just looking for a great lunch/dinner place. The food is impeccable and possesses that distinct wok flavor I've come to love. Recently stopped by here for a delicious lunch! Was not sure what to order so I chose from the Chef's suggestions area on the menu. Lemon chicken with fried rice! Yummy! The vegetables I 'borrowed' from Soo. The staff here are always very kind and efficient. I look forward to my next meal here. The only thing I'd change (if I could grant wishes): I'd give them a larger area to rent/lease so they could seat more people.

Chicken Lo mein lunch special: all delicious.

Great food, reasonable prices, love supporting small businesses. We came at lunch, and even though a small cafe, we were served quickly. We had the chicken lo mein and shrimp in lobster sauce lunch specials. The lo mein was flavorful with noodles, bean sprouts, cabbage, and tender chicken and it was a large serving. Everything tasted fresh and cooked to order. My husband loved his shrimp dish. If you sit in the right spot you can see "pop" (in the mom and pop cafe) cooking the meals over high heat in well seasoned wok pans. Great spot!!

Initial Service was OK. however after food was brought to table she vanished. No condiments on table. Sweet and Sour Pork was over cooked and tough, meat was dried out. It looked like a previously poasted, dried our then dippen batter to deep fry. See Photos

We have been going to the Shanghai Café for many years! Some of our favorite dishes are Shanghai chow mein, potstickers, dumplings in hot sauce, fried rice, and walnut shrimp.

Great food, great service. Served piping hot. Very reasonably priced. Ordered hot and sour soup...excellent. Good flavor, a little bit. Great price. Ordered the pu pu platter for two. Super hot, great variety, amazing flavors. Ordered sizzling three ingredients and kung pao three ingredients. Wow! Fresh vegetables, super hot (temperature), flavors that you'll crave for more! Been coming here for decades and has been consistently great every time. PS - this is a mom and pop shop, simple, clean, friendly.

Didn't know what to expect at this place, needed to run an errand in the neighborhood and didn't see many customers but went in anyway. We ordered a few items and I asked to not have any MSG added to my meal which they were able to oblige. Loved the simple dishes of beef & broccoli, and also paper wrapped chicken. Haven't had that in many years. The fried rice with like 11 different ingredients in it wasn't bad at all. Service was attentive and the place was relatively clean. For sure will be back when in the area.

What a bargain for lunch! I was in the mood for lo mein and came upon this restaurant in my search in the area. I didn't know how much their lunch special were until I sat down and looked at their menu. Wow! You cannot beat $11 for lunch these days and the food was served on a huge platter! I almost laughed when the waitress brought it out to the table. This is a small restaurant with a few small patio tables in front. It was a weekday and it wasn't busy. The cashier/waitress was really friendly and nice. She had a ready smile for everyone who came in. I wanted shrimp lo mein for lunch but only chicken or pork lo mein were on the lunch menu. I paid $2 more for shrimp and there were a lot in my dish. It was really good. The side salad was plain and just mainly iceberg lettuce but the egg roll was good.

Stopped in here for the first time tonight and thought it was delicious! The woman working was very kind. We were seated and had our order taken quickly and the food was flowing out shortly after. We ordered the cream cheese wontons (crispy and delicious), the beef egg rolls (also crispy and delicious), the hot and spicy dumplings (the sauce was very tasty), xiao long bao (good!), the bbq pork (good!), and the sweet and pungent chicken (crisp white meat in a fun sweet and spicy sauce). We loved everything we ate and it all came out hot and fresh, at reasonable prices for the serving sizes. We'll definitely be coming back!

Great service, great price. Went for the lunch special which was under $12 and it came with an entree, rice, salad, wonton, and an egg roll. Delish!! Highly recommend. We got the hot and spicy chicken and the broccoli beef. The flavor was delicious and the meat was nice and tender. Highly recommend especially for the price. It's a cute and quaint little place next to Vons perfect for great Chinese food.

We also ordered the garlic green beans, but they came out so late that we were already completely full from the noodles, so we took them to go. Thank god we did, because they turned out to be pretty salty on their own and really needed to be paired with white rice at home. Overall, an amazing spot for authentic noodles! Beef noodle soup - excellent flavor overall, including a strong broth and a nice, soft texture to the noodles. Out of the countless Chinese restaurants I've visited for beef noodle soup, this makes its way into the top three. 5/5 Lamb skewers - wayyyyy too dry. This is certainly not their specialty, and asking for extra cumin to sprinkle on the lamb did not redeem the firmness. I struggled to slide the meat off the skewer and ended up just eating it while still on the stick. 1.5/5 Fish fillet - so good. Easy to eat texture-wise. Caution -- a bit saltier than it looks. The bell peppers in particular were seasoned spectacularly. 4.5/5 Dry fried green beans - a delicious option for vegetables to add to the table. Most people will enjoy this one in my opinion. A bit more crunch than I expected, which is not a bad thing. 4/5 Double cooked pork - I've never seen it cooked this way, and am not a fan. I'm used to a more oily version of this dish. It contained a bunch of dried and crunchy... yams? Potatoes? Overall, the dish was mainly crunch with no flavor, and contained a relatively small amount of pork. 1/5

TL;DR It's really good. Go here…read more -------------- I came here after a friend recommended it when I told them I was coming down to San Diego for a day trip during my spring break from school in Orange County. I was born and raised in LA, so I've had a lot of Chinese food growing up, and I wasn't expecting to be this surprised--but I really was. I ordered the black bean eggplant and the salt and pepper chicken wings. The wings are what they're known for, but I have to start with the eggplant because it completely caught me off guard. It wasn't mushy at all--crispy on the outside, perfectly cooked on the inside, and coated in sauce without losing its texture. Every bite had depth and balance, not just saltiness. I actually meant to start with the wings, but the eggplant was so good I ended up eating half of it before even getting to them. By that point I was already getting full, but I still made sure to finish the wings--and I'm honestly excited to take the rest of the eggplant home as leftovers. By the time I got to the wings, I understood why they're popular--crispy, flavorful, and super satisfying--but what stood out to me was how both dishes complemented each other. One rich and layered, the other crisp and bright. I never got tired of eating, which honestly says a lot. I even told the staff how much I enjoyed the food and they thought I was joking, but I meant every word in saying I thought it was comparable, if not better then the food I've had in Chinatown in LA. Really glad I came here and the next time I have a chance to come back down to SD I definitely will come back here and that's not negotiable for me

This place is NOT worth the high rating it has. We ordered the Fried Green Beans, they were cooked in oil that was obviously not to temperature. Too greasy for consumption. To make it worse? They were drowned in salt! The Crispy Beef was nothing but thick dough with no beef inside. To add insult to injury it was BURNED so badly that all you could smell was burnt dough and taste burned dough. Hardly any sauce on it as well. The Shrimp Fried Rice should have just been plain white rice for how bland it was. The Vegetable Chow Mein literally was just a container of salt. Slim noodles and salt, disgusting! We spent so much money and all of this is going right into the garbage. Stay away from this hole! It should be shut down for trying to poison people.
