My second favorite food spot at UCSD. The food is reliably decent. However, I do think it's a little pricy given that the target audience is students.

It's been a while since I last visited Fan-Fan. The menu here has changed, and it feels a bit like Panda Express, probably to cater to foreign tastes. At noon, the place is crowded with people waiting in line--it almost feels like a Chinese canteen for international students. You grab a plate, choose your favorite dishes, and pay by weight. They also have bubble tea you can order. My meal cost 23, which isn't exactly cheap but is acceptable. The bubble tea was nothing special, so you can skip it. The food was okay, but I still prefer the old Fan-Fan, which served more authentic Chinese dishes.

I came here with my friend really late at night. I was really surprised because there was a really long line. The staff here were super nice because they explained to me what tasted good. I ended ordering the taro milk tea. It tasted good. (I've definitely had better taro, but it did the job) The price was reasonable - what you would normally pay for a boba drink in San Diego.

dawg i paid god damn $21 for my plate which is absolutely heinous. like wtf i barely got anything. panda express is a fraction of the price for better portions. mfs here finessing the rich transfers fosho. but the food was just whatever. literally panda express quality for double the price. n they charge by ounce here too man. they gotta lower that price dawg. that shi not cut out for their college life

Fan Fan is a copy-cat of Panda Express, but far better seasoned in my opinion. I've come here a couple of times since I work on campus, it's a very convenient option when I'm too tired the night before to meal prep my lunch. Pretty sure Fan Fan's target audience is Chinese International students who would use to go to Panda, and they sure hit that target all right. Super cheap meal (2 sides is $10.76 after tax), very filling, and pretty good.

Fan-Fan is another recently opened eatery in the Sixth College area of UCSD. I would consider this place as the campus version of Panda Express (PE). Their setup and offerings are similar to that of the ubiquitous national chain. The business is affiliated with the Taste of Hunan in Scripps Ranch which means a major difference is that some of the dishes contain more spiciness than those of PE. The inside of the suite was very spacious and modern. Customers can easily spread out across the multiple tables and countertops available for seating. Ten entrees are rotated on the menu and presented in trays under a hot food display area. The variety is better than PE with lobster tail featured as a signature appetizer. How many students can afford to order that regularly though? Three sides, packaged snacks, Asian-style refreshments (pre-bottled and custom made), and crispy egg custard buns rounded out the menu. For my meal, I started with the other listed appetizer which was the Xiao Long Bao. The soup dumplings came as six pieces and were not steaming hot inside the takeout container. That lessened the quality of the product. A trio of mix & match combos was available. I chose the option with three entrees and one side. Those were the stir-fried beef with broccoli, orange shrimp, and kung pao chicken with vegetarian fried rice as the side. The price was similar to what you would pay at PE for three entrees and one side. The serving portions appeared to be slightly less though. The taste and quality of the entrees were on the same level as the large chain. Overall, I rated my dining experience at Fan-Fan with three stars.

Authentic and cheap (relative to other places on campus) Price seems reasonable given the amount of food

    Taro Bliss with Boba!
    Tina N.

I love going here for boba on campus since it's a really convenient spot. Happy hour starts at 2 PM and lasts until 5 PM. I got the taro bliss with boba. The boba was very nicely sweetened and chewy but the drink itself was a little more artificial than I would've liked since there was still taro powder at the bottom. The service was fast as well. There's a lot of seating inside but sometimes it gets crowded really quickly.

We came to visit the UCSD campus and while walking by sixth college, we started to get a little hungry. I was enticed by the posted fried chicken and wedges special for $4.99, which I thought would be a nice snack while perusing the grounds. We ordered it online as instructed and quickly picked up the order. When I first saw the closed container, I thought, that's a lot of popcorn chicken. On opening the lid, I was surprised to see a fried turkey-sized leg and thigh piece sitting amidst a few potato wedges. I realized that this was not a handheld walking snack, but a sit down fork and knife adventure. Unfortunately the establishment doesn't provide knives, only chopsticks, forks, and spoons. We tried various combinations of eating tools to relocate chicken pieces to our mouths, but efforts proved futile. After about ten minutes using double forks to attempt to separate bite sized pieces from the carcass, we gave up and packed it up for a later meal. 5 stars for price and portion size. -1 star for failure to provide proper eating equipment and false advertisement.

Great service and on the campus of UCSD but not worth it. Paying $33 dollars for a box of Chinese food? I would have returned if it I could.

Great mix of western and traditional dishes done really well! Fast, no nonsense service. Definite regular for me. These kinds of shops are all over the San Gabriel valley/Diamond Bar/Rowland Heights areas but this is rare here in San Diego. Usually Chinese restaurants cater to Americanized tastes or traditional Chinese flavors but there's a middle ground in small cafes like this. Heavy wok char flavor, balance between intense spices, aromatics, and flavor balance that's a bit more Chinese (think less salty, less sweet than your local Americanized Chinese family restaurant) The service is simple and no nonsense. They are short on staff but do reasonably well. Ordering is possible online QR code so can be fast and carefree. Decor is super simple, but clean (if it feels like a boba shop it's because it was before changing hands) Service 5/10 Ambience: NA Everything is cooked very well. Veggies come out bright and crisp, traditional dishes don't lack the aromatics and spices that I want. For instance, the lamb had fruity pepper notes, and pronounced garlic, cumin, and coriander. On the other hand, Americanized dishes like sweet and sour pork are fried perfectly and have pungent tart and syrupy sweetness. However, again I'll say probably not as sweet or as tangy as other places; it's a subtlety that I really appreciate. Taste 9/10 Altogether you'll be paying ~$20 per dish after tip/tax but I have never left without leftovers. Feels like home :) giving a 4/5 only because of service but I'm hopeful they work that out. Definite recommend Value 8/10

They're currently undergoing a major renovation, so the main restaurant area is closed, but they have a temporary dining area open next door. It's super basic in terms of ambiance, but don't let that fool you -- the food totally delivered. What We Ate (or...what I remember ) Our friend took charge of ordering (which I always love -- especially at places I'm unfamiliar with), and we shared several dishes, all served family-style. I forgot to take photos -- and now I can't remember all the names -- but here are a few standouts: * Fried rice -- simple but packed with flavor, not greasy at all * Bok choy stir-fried with mushrooms -- light, fresh, and perfectly cooked. * Walnut shrimp -- sweet, crispy, and creamy, with that classic honey glaze * Spicy fish hot pot -- this was the star! A bubbling bowl of tender white fish in a spicy broth filled with chilies, aromatics, and flavor. Definitely one for spice lovers! If you're a fan of bold, spicy, and authentic flavors -- this place is worth the trip. I genuinely didn't know what to expect, but every dish we tried was flavorful, balanced, and comforting. The current setup is definitely not fancy -- it's more of a "hole-in-the-wall" experience while they renovate -- but if you care more about flavor than decor, you'll be happy here. It's a bit of a drive from where we live, but I'd 100% come back again -- especially to bring my mom, who also loves spicy Chinese food!

That kind of service keeps us coming back. Our recent weekend visit was a completely different experience. We were seated right away, but the meal stretched to nearly three hours due to slow, inconsistent service. Our waitress was polite but minimal, then disappeared on break without notice. Another server stepped in briefly--friendly and attentive--but we never saw him again It was clear he was covering too many tables. From there, it was a lot of waiting--empty glasses, plates sitting until we asked for boxes, and a long delay just to get the bill. When our original waitress returned, there was no acknowledgment or explanation. We also asked for the blinds to be lowered, and instead of handling it directly, it was simply passed off to the hostess, which added to the overall disconnect. Prices have also increased significantly (easily 3x from when we first started coming), and with no lunch specials or smaller portions, it makes the experience harder to justify when service doesn't match. The food is still good, but weekends just don't deliver the same experience. Weekday lunch: yes. Weekend: not worth it.

While the map said La Jolla - it was far enough removed from all the major beach traffic. Packed up the whole family and jetted out to what would hopefully be a new Thai spot. Even leaving guests said its as amazing, sadly though things didn't quite worked out like we wanted. The location is wonderful, it's the quaint little shop. Each of the tables had plenty of space from each other, which gave a very private feeling. The outside looked ideal for eating, but there appeared to be a storm coming in. We looked over the menus and I was a touched confused, they had the standard curries: Green, Yellow, Red but Panang was by itself and served with Stew Beef... I asked if I could get it with Chicken, and the staff was very accommodating. My wife went with Green, and we got the kids a Red Curry and Satay Chicken. Once the food had arrived I became very confused, while there appeared to be a ton of spice on my Panang it was super bland. What made things even stranger were the wide range of temperatures. The Curry itself was lukewarm, and the chicken itself felt hot enough but still gave me pause with each bite. By the time I finished my food, I was wondering if I was going to have problems later on.The Green Curry was in a similar setup, very bland and kinda cold in places. The only one that was good was the Red Curry and Satay Chicken my kids loved it. With any Thai restaurant visit you gotta get some Fried Banana and Coconut Ice Cream. So we ordered that - while the food arrived in a timely fashion the dessert didn't. It literally took almost 20mins to get the dessert. During which time I was able to pay and get us packed up to leave. The dessert finally did show and everyone loved it. I'm not sure I would go back here again for a round 2. While the atmosphere is really nice, tables have enough privacy and it felt very quaint. The food seems to be all over the place, worse is it was very bland - I wanted some spice Here's hoping that it was just a fluke but 2 out of 3 Curries being bland and random temperatures seems concerning.
